Catholic from Head to Toe: The Headship of the Pope and the Washing of Feet, Part II
Last week we looked at the Headship of the Pope on how he governs and teaches the Church of Christ
entrusted to his care. How does this all relate to the foot washing for our Holy Thursday Mass?
First, I’ll offer some personal experience. Obviously, the foot washing is not the sacrament of Holy
Orders. Most parishes simply had twelve guys up there, picked from the parish crowd. But doesn’t
that speak to our Twelve Apostles? To us, they were simply twelve guys; but to Christ, they were his
chosen Twelve. To us, we read the bible and see their faults and failings and sins; but by God’s grace,
excepting Judas, they are saints. These are the men who walked with our Lord along the dirty paths of
this world and picked up that dirt themselves and they would only learn humility by watching their Master get down on
his knees and wash them clean. There was a dirty, grimy, smelly quality to washing men’s feet on Holy Thursday that
pushed me to be humble. I’ll miss that.
Women’s feet are different. The scientists will tell you that. Give the scientists the tiniest nail clipping and they will be
able to tell you whether it belonged to a man or a woman. Women’s feet are different. The stores will tell you that. It is a
world of fashion and high heels and pedicures that I cannot begin to understand; but it certainly is a world of beauty I
appreciate. Many women who have already participated in the foot washing have pointed out how honored they have felt
to be part of this ritual action. That is a good and beautiful thing. I prefer that their husbands wash their feet rather than
myself as pastor. I will wash their sins away in the Precious Blood of our Lord in Confession. I am grateful that he
washes mine away almost every week. All women, as well as all men, will continued to be honored and blessed by our
Lord. He will become their brother in Baptism. He will feed each one with his Body and Blood in Holy Communion;
because at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, his saving sacrifice of the Cross will be made present for each one of them.
There is no greater honor. There is no greater love.
So again, how does this all relate to the foot washing for our Holy Thursday Mass? Now it may include women. That is
one option. Women are not required; to use men alone would still be another option. In fact, the ritual action is an option
itself and not an essential part of the Mass. It may be performed if a pastoral reason suggests it. Since there are
legitimate options, Catholics can certainly make their preference known to their priest pastors and then be prepared for
whatever option is chosen. If one parish does not include the option you desire, you will easily find a neighboring parish
that does. Let us thank God for the gift of our freedom and not complain about people who exercise it properly.
As for me, I will most likely omit the foot washing on Holy Thursday at St. Matthew. I hate to see people spend so much
valuable time and energy arguing about what to do during Mass. Then we never get around to doing what Christ asked
of us outside of Mass. This is what unfolded on the night before he died (John 13:12-15).
So when he had washed their feet and put his garments back on and reclined at table again, he said to them, “Do you
realize what I have done for you? You call me ‘teacher’ and ‘master,’ and rightly so, for indeed I am. If I, therefore, the
master and teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another’s feet. I have given you a model to follow, so
that as I have done for you, you should also do.”

(for Catholic High School Students)
Any student registered in St. Matthew Parish,
planning to attend a Catholic high school in the fall
of this year, is eligible to apply for these scholarships
sponsored by the Council of Catholic Women (CCW).
Applications can be obtained in the parish office or at the
school office and must be returned by Monday, April 4th to
either location. A financial application sent to
“FACTS” (ONLINE only) (requires tax information), the
forms for parents and students, and an application form are
parts of the application. Directions on completing the forms are
included with the application. This is to inform you so you can
begin the process immediately. If the student is currently in
high school or a public school, a letter of recommendation from
the principal or DRE needs to be included.
Be sure that all forms are for the 2016 application. For more
information, please call Mary Ellen at 630-893-0758. Over the
years, six students from St. Matthew Parish have been chosen
to receive this scholarship. In addition, one student from St.
Matthew will receive a stipend (the Mary Lou Johnson CCW
Scholarship) based on the submitted application forms.

Most people cannot go on a pilgrimage to Fatima or
Lourdes, so Mary becomes a pilgrim and makes a visit to
your home. Next week members of the Legion of Mary
will be in the narthex after all Masses so you can sign up

Love is Kind -1 Cor:4
As St. Paul reminded the members of the early
Church in Corinth, we too are reminded that love is
shown in simple acts of kindness and service to
others. Recently the students of St. Matthew Parish
School supported the Village of Glendale Heights
Valentines for Vets program. Working with their faith
families, students created over 300 valentines to be
shared with brave men and women of our community
who serve in the Armed Forces. Students were
honored when Mayor Linda Jackson joined them and
accepted their beautiful works of art for our veterans.
Along with the Valentines for Vets service project,
students also collected change along with warm winter
hats, gloves, and scarves to be distributed by the
DuPage County PADS program during Catholic
Schools Week.

collection was a grand success. Thank you.
Woman of the Year — It’s time again to
consider a St. Matthew CCW member for this
honor. The CCW member must be a due paying
active member. There will be a box in the
narthex on the ministry table. Please place your
suggestion in the box. This is not a contest. We ask for your
suggestions. This is a diocesan wide event. The woman
selected will be honored at a Mass and luncheon celebrated
at the Cathedral. The box will be on the ministry table
through February.

JESÚS Y EL DEMONIO
Como nos recuerda el Evangelio de hoy, el
demonio tentó a Jesús con citas de la Sagrada Escritura:
haz un milagro que te convenga. Véndete. Deslumbra a
tus oyentes; el pueblo es ingenuo y novelero. Camina por
estas sendas fáciles. El tentador trata de llevar a Jesús por
la senda fácil pero resbalosa, ofreciéndole las soluciones
fáciles pero falsas que siempre están a la mano. El
demonio sabe lo que es bueno, pero no tiene la capacidad
de hacer lo que es bueno, y menos aún de ser bueno. El
demonio es la personificación del Mal, e intuye en Jesús
la presencia más fuerte, y más genuinamente atractiva, de
la santidad.
El Evangelio de este domingo nos muestra al Mal
expuesto y desenmascarado. Satanás sabe que se le ha
acabado el juego. Hoy Jesús comienza a deshacer su
tejido de mentiras, y a sanar a las almas, y al mundo
entero. Y en este tiempo de Cuaresma, la Iglesia nos
invita a participar en esta labor de renovación, de nueva
creación, y a dejar que Cristo nos sane.

Año Jubilar de la Misericordia

Primer Domingo de Cuaresma
El Miércoles de Ceniza el Papa Francisco comisionó a “Misioneros de la Misericordia”, sacerdotes confesores que fueron
enviados alrededor del mundo como “signos vivos de la prontitud del Padre para dar la bienvenida a quienes buscan el perdón
de Dios”. En cierta manera, el Papa Francisco desafía a todos nosotros a convertirnos en “misioneros de la misericordia” al
vivir
esta Cuaresma del Año Jubilar de la Misericordia con “mayor intensidad, como momento fuerte para celebrar y experimentar
la
misericordia de Dios” (Misericordiae Vultus, 17). El Papa Francisco nos propone hacer nuestras las palabras del profeta
Miqueas: “No persistirá en su ira para siempre, porque se complace en la misericordia. Volverá a compadecerse de nosotros,
sepultará nuestras culpas” (Miqueas 7:18–19). Ya que nosotros mismos hemos experimentado la misericordia de Dios en el
perdón incondicional de nuestros pecados, que tan entusiasmados debemos estar para invitar a todos los demás para conocer de
Dios la paz de la misericordia inmensa; más aún por experiencia, a través de nuestro alcance de bondad y cuidado compasivo,
algo del amor incondicional de Dios por ellos.
