BRADENTON HERALD
Bradenton com
The New Look Bradenton Herald and Bradenton.com
by Bob Turner, President & Publisher, Bradenton Herald
On May 18th, the Bradenton Herald and
Bradenton.com launched a new look.
Why change? Because our readers, have
changed so much. How they want to get the
news has never been more diversified. After
tracking our readers here and across the
country in other McClatchy markets, we’ve
found our print readers want a cleaner,
more organized look. They either want a
quick summary of the news with a cup of
coffee, or an in-depth look when they can
take the time to explore. Online, most come
to the Herald via mobile devices, looking for
a quick update on their cell phone or iPad,
or on desktop during a break at work.
Readers also are enjoying the news, sports
and features videos being produced each
day by our reporters and photographers,
so we’re devoting more resources to that
visual reporting.
Our strategy: to meet our readers’ needs
for news with our award-winning journalism,
with more analysis and perspective in print,
and more videos, photos and easy-to-scan
breaking news on Bradenton.com.
For several months, we have experimented
in print with occasionally packaging our
strong local news in the A section. This
new design now emphasizes every day
what sets us apart from other media: our
dedicated, award-winning local reporting.
The Herald’s front page is now easier to
navigate, with our top stories and a digest
to help guide you quickly inside. Local
and Business pages are now inside the A
section every day, keeping you updated on
everything happening in Manatee County.
The new look is more colorful, attractive and
easier to read.
Opinion and Letters pages will also be in the
A section. We’ll continue to offer national and
international coverage, emphasizing stories
that have particular impact on Florida and
Tampa Bay. And our Sports and Features
coverage will continue with our great team
of reporters and editors. On Wednesdays,
you’ll find Sports and Taste in the same B
section, with all the same content.
We’re introducing new In-Depth coverage in
print on Page 3A Wednesdays and an entire
section Sundays, and on Bradenton.com 24-7.
It features longer pieces and deep reports
with more background and perspective. Our
Here is what isn’t changing: our deep
commitment to keeping readers informed
and engaged, celebrating our diverse
community, entertaining you and shining a
light to enact needed change and make a
difference.
Since the majority of our digital readers
come to us primarily through a smartphone
or tablet, we worked to make our story pages
look more engaging on mobile devices.
It’s what we’ve been doing since the first
editions of the Bradenton Herald were
printed in 1922. With the new changes,
we’re reinforcing our commitment to
readers as the most trusted source of news
and information for decades to come.
We welcome your feedback on these
changes. Please visit the “Feedback” link
at new.bradenton.com and tell us what you
think.
As always, thank you for reading the
Bradenton Herald.

Hiring a Roofer – What Every Consumer Should Know
Hiring a roofing contractor can be risky if you don’t take steps to make sure you are getting
the right roofer for the job. A little homework ahead of time may translate into better
roof-work, and a quality job at a better value for homeowners. Always get at least three
proposals and compare the specifications to insure that the bids are alike.
Is my contractor licensed and insured?
This is one of the most important questions you can ask to protect you and your home or
business. With a little time and research, you can be assured that your contractor meets the
requirements for doing business in Florida. At a minimum, check the following:
a) Verify the contractor’s license – myfloridalicense.com/dbpr or call 850-487-1395
b) Verify Worker’s Compensation Coverage – myfloridacfo.com/division/wc
c) Verify Liability Insurance – Ask your contractor for a current “Certificate of Liability
Insurance” and contact the carrier to insure that coverage continues to be in place.
Never pay for all repairs in advance (a deposit should be no more than 10% of the total
contract price); and pay by check or credit card; make the check out to the company not the
person; don't pay cash to a contractor or a sales person.
Before making your final payment, obtain a “Release of Lien” from the contractor and
from any suppliers and sub-contractors that may have been involved in your job. Become
familiar with Florida’s Lien Law. Be sure to get the contract and warranties in writing.
Add and initial any changes to the contract and make sure it includes information regarding
completion dates, materials, clean-up, etc. For a more comprehensive list of questions to
ask your licensed roofer, go to the FRSA’s web-site at floridaroof.com/replacing-your-roof.

Manatee Chamber Wins Future of the Region
Award for Community Preparedness
The Manatee Chamber of Commerce recently won second place for "Community Preparedness" during the Tampa Bay Regional Planning
Council’s Future of the Region Awards (FOR) ceremony. The FOR awards program provides honor and recognition for notable achievement
in the public and private sector for resource planning and management. The Community Preparedness category awards the efforts of
organizations and municipalities across the Tampa Bay region for their efforts in ensuring our community recovers from hurricanes, floods
and other disasters.
The Chamber has worked diligently in building resiliency in the
business community through educating and informing our members
of the resources and opportunities available to help prepare and
recover from any type of disaster whether natural or man-made.
Through a year-long public relations campaign, the Chamber
partnered with local emergency officials not only by providing our
members with valuable information, but by participating in various
disaster trainings and exercises and acting as the main link between
businesses and Manatee County’s Emergency Support Function
18 (ESF-18) during times of Emergency Operations Center
activation. Also, in 2014, the Manatee Chamber of Commerce was
designated a NOAA Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador, the first
Chamber of Commerce in the nation to receive this designation.
Our Chamber has been committed to disaster preparedness and
recovery for many years. Jahna Allen, Chamber V.P. of Community
Development, has taken our efforts to a new level so that our
Chamber is an even better resource for businesses,” said Jacki
Dezelski, Executive Vice President at the Chamber. “We applaud
the many businesses that take important preparedness steps
every year to enhance community-wide efforts.”

Manatee Tops the List of
Chambers in Tampa Bay
Region
Chamber Friends
Are Here to Help!
Brian
Carter
The Manatee Chamber has once again been recognized as the largest Chamber in the
Tampa Bay Region according to a list published in June by the Tampa Bay Business
Journal. The Manatee Chamber had 2,151 businesses and organization as members when
the Journal conducted its research.
“We are so proud that the Manatee Chamber is once again at the top of the list because
it speaks directly to the strength of local businesses,” said Bob Bartz, President of the
Manatee Chamber. “Our members invest in the Chamber for many different reasons. This
distinction is a testament to the impact and influence of the Manatee Chamber, which starts
with our role and responsibility as the voice of the business community.”
“The list of accomplishments the Manatee Chamber has achieved reflects our high level of
leadership, business engagement, and culture of collaboration. Investment in the Manatee
Chamber delivers a substantial return,” said Trudy Moon of Air & Energy and the 2016
Chairman of the Board of the Manatee Chamber. “The Manatee Chamber is very responsive
to our members’ needs and we see our community’s quality of life as directly connected to
business success – and vice versa.”
Bartz added, “The Manatee Chamber supports local businesses while effectively working to
make Manatee County the best place to live, work, play and own a business.” The Manatee
Chamber of Commerce also holds the distinction as the only four-time winner of the Florida

We also salute the community members and fellow
businesses that continue to support youth agriculture.
We’re proud to carry on the tradition of supporting
agriculture and hunger-relief efforts in the
communities where our employees live and work.

Hurricane Season Has Begun!
With the arrival of Tropical Storm Colin last month, many businesses and residents received
a wake-up call to the coming hurricane season. With nearly 12 inches of rain falling in
some areas of the region, power disruptions and transportation delays possibly resulted in
decreases in productivity, not to mention minor damages.
Hurricane season officially began June 1 and will run through November 30. Although
we’ve had fewer storms the past few years, mainly due to the effects of El Niño, forecasters
warn that our area is overdue for a major storm. In fact, Florida has not had a hurricane
make landfall since Wilma in 2005. Although El Niño has played a role in the absences of
storms, some forecasters suggest La Niña is going to take over which will increase the
likelihood of more storms during the 2016 Hurricane season.
Get a Plan NOW!
How quickly your company is back in business
following a disaster, such as a hurricane, will depend on emergency planning done today.
If you have not created your disaster/hurricane preparedness plan yet, now is the time.
The following critical components should be included in your preparedness plan:
•
Resource Management: Identify the Resources needed for responding to
emergencies, business operations continuity and communications during
and after a storm.
•
Emergency Response Plan: Create plans to protect people and property.
•
Crisis Communications Plan: Create procedures to communicate with
employees, stakeholders, and customers before, during and after a storm.
•
Business Continuity Plan: Steps and procedures that include strategies to
overcome disruption of business operations. This plan should also include
protection and recovery of information technology (computers, servers,
software, etc.).
•
Employee Assistance and Support: Identify the needs of employees and
families following an incident. Encourage employees to develop a family
preparedness plan also.
Once you have your plan created, ensure your employees are familiar with their role in
the plan and conduct regularly scheduled education and training sessions. For more
information, including sample preparedness plans, visit fema.gov/preparedness-checkliststoolkits. A disaster preparedness course is also available online through Manatee County’s
Emergency Management Department at mymanatee.org.
The Manatee Chamber of Commerce wants to make sure you and your business are
prepared for and any disaster – we want you back in business as soon as possible to
ensure our community’s quality of life.

OUR COVER FEATURE
Port Manatee – A Diverse Global Gateway
Port Manatee is one of Florida’s largest and fastest-growing deepwater seaports, moving approximately 8 million tons of bulk, breakbulk,
container and project cargo each year including fresh produce, forestry products, citrus juice products, fertilizer, steel, aluminum,
automobiles, cement aggregate and more.
Located at the entrance to Tampa Bay, Port Manatee
is also one of the closest U.S. deepwater seaports
to the expanding Panama Canal and offers superior
intermodal connectivity, competitive rates and a
prime location with nearly 5,000 acres of largely
undeveloped land ripe for development adjacent to
the port - a valuable resource in the world of usually
land-deficient seaports.
Port Manatee is an important economic engine for
Manatee County as it generates more than $2.3
billion in annual economic impact for the local
community, while supporting more than 24,000 jobs,
without levying ad-valorem taxes.
Modern cargo handling facilities, powerful cranes,
state-of-the-art warehousing for bulk and refrigerated
cargoes, ten deepwater berths, convenient
connectivity to the CSX mainline and direct
uncongested access to the interstate are just few of
the tremendous assets Port Manatee offers current and potential customers.
Port Manatee is one of Manatee County’s leading economic engines, continuously focused on development and job creation. Big
businesses are increasingly being drawn to the port and its surrounding land, offering hundreds of new jobs in maritime and related
industrial sectors.
As a dependent special district, Port Manatee is governed by the seven members of the Manatee County Port Authority. Serving dual roles
as port authority members and county commissioners provides a unique understanding of the port’s impact on the region.
Port Manatee will be offering complimentary bus tours for the public throughout the Ship-Shape Showcase event on August 4. In addition,
Port Manatee’s open tram tour season begins mid-October and runs through May, Mondays and Wednesdays. Please visit the Port
Manatee website at portmanatee.com for tram tour reservations or call 941-722-6621.

Chamber Reaches More Than 3,500
Students with Project T.E.A.C.H.
A very special thank you to more than 145 volunteers who participated
in Project T.E.A.C.H. on the morning of Friday, May 20. Our volunteers
gathered at Freedom Village Retirement Community for a breakfast
orientation sponsored by Manatee Education Foundation. After the
orientation, the volunteers headed to their assigned fourth grade classes
all over Manatee County where they spent an hour with a classroom full of
future entrepreneurs and business owners.
The volunteers shared their business backgrounds and perspectives with the fourth graders. Students then
thought about what business they would like to be in by drawing their own business cards. Dreams and
ideas of the students ranged from astronauts to zoo keepers and many things in between. Without the help
of our sponsor, Manatee Education Foundation, and the support of Tropicana, Freedom Village, and Palm
Printing, this year’s program would not have been such a success. For more information about Project
T.E.A.C.H. and other workforce education initiatives, please contact Jahna Allen at 941-748-4842, ext. 172.

JUNE BUSINESS AFTER HOURS
The Humane Society of Manatee County has operated a no-kill facility since
its founding in 1970. Humane Society of Manatee County is committed to
leading Manatee County in fostering compassion and respect for all animals
through care, education and collaboration.
The philosophy of the Humane Society of Manatee County is that the
treatment of animals is a reflection of our community, and our four core
programs serving the animals continue to grow. The leadership of our
organization is proud of the high quality, high volume spay/neuter clinic, TNR
(Trap/Neuter/Return) program, shelter adoption and retention services and
Pet Safety Net. The Humane Society actively collaborates with other animal
welfare organizations within the community to reduce euthanasia of animals
as a means of population control.
Our community outreach efforts are being expanded as these partnerships
are essential to achieving our goals. We are committed to providing the
highest quality medical care and related services for all of the animals in
Manatee County, including those animals in families facing economic
challenges.
Over the past six years, we have added to our animal shelter a high-volume
spay/neuter clinic, a pet food bank, a trap-neuter-return program for feral
cats, preventative veterinary care services, and a grant-funded community
outreach coordinator. In September 2015, the doors opened to our new
Pet Health Center, a 10,000 square foot, repurposed building to serve not
only our shelter animals and the public, but also pet owners that may not
otherwise be able to afford veterinary care for their pets. We have identified
this as a great need in Manatee County as many lower income pet owners
find this to be a literal life-or-death situation for their family pet.
We welcome you to tour our facility, to see our mission in action and how we
save lives four paws at a time.

Chamber Launches Job Shadow Pilot with
Two High Schools
A ‘complete success’ describes the Chamber’s Job Shadow Pilot that was held May 5 at Manatee Memorial Hospital. Thanks to the
generosity of CEO Kevin DiLallo and Manatee Memorial Foundation Executive Director, Vernon DeSear, twenty high school students from
Bayshore and Southeast High Schools were welcomed with open arms to visit more than ten departments within the hospital. As one
student commented, “I never knew these jobs were available at a hospital. You normally think of just nurses and doctors but there are so
many other jobs such as security officers, IT, finance, office workers, and cooks.”
Job shadowing is designed to
increase career awareness for
students by allowing them to “walk
in the shadow” of a company's
employees. The Chamber will be
collaborating to expand the job
shadow program for the 2016-2017
school year.
Almost any workplace is a potential
job-shadowing site. For more
information on how you can host a
student, please contact Jahna at
941-748-4842, ext. 172 or email
[email protected].
Job Shadow students visit the Emergency Room at Manatee Memorial Hospital
Kevin DiLallo, CEO, and AnnaLuisa Huffman, Director of Volunteer
Services, talk to students about Manatee Memorial Hospital and the
benefits of a career at a health care facility.

MAY COFFEE CLUB
At the Manatee YMCA, we believe that being healthy means more than
simply being physically active. We are more than a gym, we’re a cause.
The Y is committed to strengthening our community through youth
development, healthy living, and social responsibility.
You know the faces of need in Manatee County as well as we do: children
in need of educational support, teens in need of positive role models,
and families in need of a place where they can grow in spirit, mind and
body. The Y is committed to meeting these needs and others through
programs such as child care, aquatics, group exercise classes, fitness,
camp and youth sports. We see every interaction with young people as
an opportunity for learning and development—all grounded in the Y’s
core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. And with our
doors open to all, we bring together people from all backgrounds, and
support those who need us most. We take on the most urgent needs
in our community and inspire a spirit of service in return. Our members,
volunteers, supporters and staff demonstrate the power of what we can
achieve.
The Y has the long standing track record and on-the-ground presence
necessary to address the county’s most pressing social issues related
to youth, health and community life. With a mission to put Christian
principles into practice, we work side-by-side with our neighbors to
make sure everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the
opportunity to learn, grow and thrive.

Why I Love the Chamber...
“Bank of America has been proud to be a member of the Manatee Chamber. As a member
of the Team and Small Business Banker supporting this County I am proud to call home,
I am excited about the opportunities the Chamber has provided to meet businesses that
can benefit from our respective services. The spirit within the Chamber to support each
other is second to none and I look forward to looking at ways to support the Chamber and
members.
As a Small Business Banker, members have utilized Bank of America to help them
find solutions to improving cash flow including support with lending solutions such as:
purchasing or refinancing commercial buildings, purchasing equipment, and business
credit cards. Being part of the Chamber and supporting my fellow members is a privilege.
