The future is bright for Port
Manatee. Not only is the port
one of Florida’s largest and
fastest growing seaports, it also
has room to grow. Nearly 5,000
acres of largely undeveloped
land adjacent to the port are ripe
for development - a valuable
resource in the world of usually
land deficient sea ports.

Manatee Tops List of
Chambers in Tampa Bay
Region
The Manatee Chamber of Commerce has once again been recognized as the largest
Chamber in the Tampa Bay Region according to a list published on June 12, 2015 by the
Tampa Bay Business Journal. The Manatee Chamber, which is 5-Star Accredited from
the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, had 2,134 businesses and organizations as members
when the Journal conducted its research.
“This distinction is a testament to our more than 2,100 members and their investment.
We are honored that the Manatee Chamber is once again at the top of the list because
it speaks directly to the strength of local businesses,” said Bob Bartz, president of the
Manatee Chamber of Commerce. “The impact and influence of the Manatee Chamber
starts with our role and responsibility as the voice of the business and organizations in
our community.”
The Manatee Chamber’s membership number of 2,134 is followed by the Greater
Sarasota Chamber’s 1,620 members, the Lakeland Chamber’s 1,500 members, and the
Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce’s 1,200 members.
“The list of accolades the Manatee Chamber has earned reflects top notch leadership
coupled with a culture of collaboration. These distinctions should give businesses
confidence that their investment in the Manatee Chamber delivers a substantial return.
The Manatee Chamber operates under sound business practices, is very responsive
to its members’ needs and sees the community’s quality of life directly connected to
business success,” said Jonathan Fleece of Blalock Walters, PA, the 2015 Chairman of
the Board of the Manatee Chamber.
Bartz added, “Our membership’s priorities lead to a responsive, aggressive Chamber
program of work. Dedicated business leaders and our talented staff are a combination
that allows the Manatee Chamber to support local businesses while effectively working
to make Manatee County the best place to live, work, play and run a business.”
The Manatee Chamber of Commerce has also received past recognition as a National
Chamber of the Year award winner and holds the distinction as the only three-time winner
of the Florida Chamber of the Year award.

Looking
for Love?
Be Careful
Where You
Look!
Dating scams are unfortunately very
prevalent in the Internet age of online
romance and victims are losing millions of
dollars, and even their identities, to these scammers.
The scammers target individuals on dating websites and pretend that they are interested
in meeting up and having a relationship. Weeks or months go by and the scammer's
demeanor suddenly changes. Victims may fall for their dream date's story of an emergency
or personal situation that they are unable to afford and feel compelled to send the scammer
money. Reasons generally range from a stolen wallet, hospital bills, to funeral expenses
for a loved one. Scammers may even claim to want to travel to their date's location but
state that they are short on cash.
Check out 10 ways you can spot a romance scammer and 5 Tips to Avoid Online Dating
Scams from AARP’s web-site at AARP.org.
Have You
Checked Your
Credit Report
Recently?
BBB Tip: Credit Reports
Check your credit report for errors or potential
fraud once each year. You can order a free
copy of your credit report from each of the
three credit reporting agencies once every
12 months by visiting annualcreditreport.com.
This site is run jointly by the three credit reporting agencies (Equifax, Experian, and
TransUnion).
It’s a good idea to stagger your requests for a copy of your credit report, requesting it from
one bureau every four months. This will help you monitor your credit over the course of a
year and detect potential fraud early.
Many credit card companies will now help you keep a closer eye on your credit for free.
Check online or call your credit card company to see if they offer this service or check out
more information about your credit and how to improve your score at www.bbb.org.

Disaster Recovery &
Re-Entry
August and September are routinely the most active months for hurricane development
and as we enter these busy months, it’s important to pay attention to tropical activity in our
surrounding waters. By now, you should have your business continuity plan (BCP) in place
and are updating and reviewing the plan with your staff.
A vital component of your BCP is your re-entry procedure. Following a disaster, emergency
management officials have set guidelines as to when and how affected areas will be open
to residents and business owners and their employees. First and foremost, safety and
security are officials’ top priorities. Once the area has been opened, it is important you and
your employees have the appropriate re-entry credentials that will not only allow entrance
to your business, but will provide protection from individuals wanting to do harm.
Although every county is different, the Florida Division of Emergency Management has
identified three common forms of identification that should be presented by business
owners and employees to allow access to safe areas following a disaster.
®
Corporate Identification Card
Most businesses and organization have some type of employee identification card. The
following information should be included on the identification card to meet the suggested
re-entry guidelines:
• Photograph of Employee
• Name of Employee
• Company Name and Logo
• Issue and Expiration Dates
Letter of Authorization
ittsburgh irates
aseball
The letter of authorization should provide enough information for local authorities to verify
the business’ address and that the employee is a part of that business:
• Company Name and Address
• Employees Name, Title or Position
• Current Year
• Company Representative’s Name, Title and Signature on the Letter
Valid Driver’s License
SARASOTA
BRADENTON
Being the most common type of credential, the information on the business owner’s or
employee’s valid driver’s license must match the information included in the other types of
credentials presented.
For more information on re-entry procedures and credentials, please visit
http://www.floridadisaster.org/DEMbusiness.asp.

OUR COVER FEATURE
Port Manatee – Your Gateway to
International Trade
Port Manatee is a multi-purpose deepwater seaport located at the entrance to Tampa Bay in northern Manatee County, moving
approximately 8 million tons of bulk, breakbulk, container and project cargo each year. Cargo includes fresh produce, forestry products,
citrus juice products, fertilizer, steel, aluminum, automobiles, cement aggregate and more. Port Manatee is an important economic engine
for Manatee County as it generates more than $2.3 billion in annual economic impact for the local community, while supporting more than
24,000 jobs, without levying ad-valorem taxes.
The future is bright for Port
Manatee. Not only is the port
one of Florida’s largest and
fastest growing seaports, it also
has room to grow. Nearly 5,000
acres of largely undeveloped
land adjacent to the port are ripe
for development - a valuable
resource in the world of usually
land deficient sea ports.
Modern cargo handling facilities,
state-of-the-art warehousing for
bulk and refrigerated cargoes, ten
deep water berths, convenient
connectivity to the CSX mainline
and direct uncongested access
to the interstate are just few
of the tremendous assets Port
Manatee offers current and
potential customers.
As a dependent special district,
Port Manatee is governed by the
seven members of the Manatee
County Port authority. Serving
dual roles as port authority members and county commissioners provides a unique understanding of the port’s impact on the region.
Port Manatee will be offering complimentary bus tours for the public throughout the Ship-Shape Showcase event on August 6. In addition,
Port Manatee’s open tram tour season begins mid-October and runs through May, Mondays and Wednesdays. Please visit our website
www.portmanatee.com for tram tour reservations or call (941) 722 6621.

JULY BUSINESS AFTER HOURS
Peace River Electric Cooperative, a Touchstone Energy® affiliate
headquartered in Wauchula, Florida, provides electric service to almost
40,000 homes and businesses. PRECO maintains approximately 3,500
miles of power lines in Brevard, DeSoto, Hardee, Highlands, Hillsborough,
Indian River, Manatee, Osceola, Polk and Sarasota Counties.
In 1940, local residents banded together to bring electricity to the area by
forming their own electric co-op. Today, in 2015, PRECO celebrates its 75th
anniversary as a member-owned, not-for-profit organization.
PRECO offers an array of energy programs to its members, such as free
residential and commercial energy audits, “Safety City” (an electric safety
program for schools and civic clubs), TogetherWeSave.com interactive
energy-saving website, meter-base surge suppressors to protect appliances
and electronics from power surges and much more.
As a dedicated community partner, we believe in “giving back” to the areas
we serve. PRECO supports local schools and service organizations through
charitable donations, sponsors local students in the annual “Youth Tour
to Washington, DC” event and maintains a generous college scholarship
program, to name just a few.
Currently, PRECO is growing as the number of new urban subdivisions
increases steadily, especially in Manatee County. In the midst of adding new
electric accounts daily, we continue to provide quality electric service with
fewer employees than ever before due to the use of new technologies and
improvements in system operating efficiency.
At Peace River Electric Cooperative, our focus is on providing dependable
service to our members and value to our community.

Why I Love the Chamber
Manatee Chamber and small business is synonymous. No matter how small your business,
a chamber membership provides you enterprise-level value for your dollar. Many people
don't realize a large percentage of the membership is comprised of companies with 5 or
less. Manatee Chamber is an award winning chamber on many levels.
There are several avenues in which you and your business can become involved. These
committees can develop long-lasting relationships for you personally and your firm. In
addition, participation in committees helps the community and increases your business's
exposure.
Monthly networking events and annual events offer a multitude of exciting and stimulating
opportunities to grow your business.
