A
few years ago, after hearing how much our
volunteers enjoy spending time with their
Littles, I contemplated becoming a Big
Sister again. As a mother of four children and six
grandchildren, I was experiencing the empty nest with
the exit of our youngest son to college.
With a very busy life as the executive of this non-profit I wasn’t sure there
would be enough time to fit in one more responsibility. But what is more
important than changing the life of one child? With those words foremost in
my mind, I called our staff to sign on as a Community-Based Big Sister and
met Brittany.
As a high school student Brittany needed community service hours, so
she became a volunteer greeter on Saturday mornings at Mote Marine
Laboratory. I enjoyed listening to her greeting ‘Welcome to Mote Marine
Laboratory, have you been to the Laboratory before?’ as I arrived to drive us
off to a lunch and hear about the morning’s activities. The All Faith’s Food
Bank “Bowls of Hope” became our next volunteer effort. The creativity
and laughter we shared making bowls turned into another Saturday
spent“Giving Hunger the Blues.” We came to know each other better through
those service hours.
Through a driving rain storm we toured University of Central Florida and
Santa Fe State College, evaluating colleges to determine which one would
be the best fit for Brittany. She’s discovered that both schools will help her
realize her hopes and dreams.
I can’t imagine what my weekends were like before Brittany. We laugh, we
text, we volunteer and we learn from each other. She has enriched my life
and fit into my family. Just last weekend my youngest son returned from
college for a visit, and we went out to our favorite restaurant. Afterwards, he
remarked, “Mom, you talk to Brittany just like you do with me. I can tell you
care.” It’s true. I do. And I know my Little Sister is on her way to
being a Big Success!

2012 Big Brother and Big Sister of the Year
“The wisdom Sara gives me
helps me in life.”
When I’m dealing with big problems, she’s always been there,” Cassie says. “For the
past nine years, she’s been my best friend.” Sara feels the same way, stating “being with
Cassie over the years has meant everything to me. I’ve got as much as I’ve given, and it’s
been a wonderful experience for me to feel I can still do some good at my age of 81 and
still make a positive change to a young person’s life.”
Sara embodies the mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters by providing Cassie with a strong
relationship that continues to change Cassie’s life for the better, forever.

Harmon has taken Tim under his wing for the past eight years. Tim was a young
boy when Harmon entered his life as his Big Brother, and eight years later the bond
continues and only grows stronger between the two.
Harmon has been a “father figure” in Tim’s life. “Before him, my life was going in the
wrong direction. When we get together, we talk about a lot of things. He helps me to
think about choices and how they could affect my life. I know that Harmon and I will
keep in contact for a long time,” says Tim.
