SAFE PLACE AND RAPE CRISIS CENTER
FALL 2015
S a v i n g L i v e s To d a y a n d To m o r r o w
Your spark can become a flame and
change everything. – E. D. Nixon
It only takes a spark to ignite a flame.
What originally began, almost 40 years
ago, as a small group of strong, intelligent
and compassionate women, with a desire
to help women - and their children - to
overcome the devastation of assault and
abuse, has grown into the only statecertified center for domestic and sexual
violence in Sarasota and DeSoto Counties.
Last year alone, SPARCC provided
outreach advocacy and crisis counseling
services to 1,497 individuals; sheltered 187
adults and 117 children for a total of 6,503
nights; responded to 4,068 hotline callers;
and provided education to over 4,500
students, in order to prevent this type of
violence in the future.
This SPARCC began with the leadership
of a few visionaries who identified a
need and ignited with the strength of
its community supporters, employees,
volunteers and donors, like you. And, for
that, we thank you. It is through your
generosity of time, talent and treasure
that these services are made possible.
Together we have fanned the flame.
Now, it is our sincere desire to turn up the
heat and spark further change. Our goal is to
gather the energy of a multitude of supporters.
An insurmountable assembly with the capacity
and capability to create an explosion of
transformation in our community. A society
that will change everything.
SPARCC’s mission is to stop domestic
and sexual violence in our community,
but we cannot do this alone. We need
you… and we need you to invite
everyone you know.We need you to talk
about SPARCC with your family, your
friends and your neighbors. Most people
aren’t aware that 1 in 4 women will be
affected by domestic or sexual violence
in her lifetime. Or, sadly, that someone
they know or love is being affected.
This is personal; and now is the time for
everyone to get involved.
You are SPARCC’s most valuable asset.
Your voice is our strength. Did you
know that the #1 reason people don’t
get involved is because they aren’t
asked? Did you know that an invitation
to get involved is 90% more effective
when it comes from a friend or a
loved one? Or that 1 in 4 peer-to-peer
requests resulted in donations when
only 1 in 1,250 had the same result from
a fundraising organization?
Yes, you are very powerful and we are
very grateful to have you. You ignite
SPARCC. Please join us as we turn up
the heat to end domestic and sexual
violence. Invite others to stand with
SPARCC. Let them know that together,
we are saving lives today and tomorrow.
It’s time to get involved.

Survivor Story
I tell my story to share strength and courage. I want people to know
that everyone has the power overcome terrible relationships and
situations.
Once upon a time, I met a man I believed was my prince charming.
He did everything to make me happy. He drove me to and from
work, was amazing with my sons and ultimately swept me off my
feet. I believed we would be a beautiful family.
Unfortunately, time passed and he slowly became very controlling.
He began to tell me how I could spend my money and my time
and intentionally made me late for work. I was late so often that I
was suspended. He said if I went back, he wouldn’t drive me or help
babysit. I felt stuck and ended up quitting.
Then one day, we got into a huge argument and woke up my children.
He told us to leave. As I gathered my boys and looked for my purse,
he pushed me to the ground. He grabbed my throat… and I saw my
sons watching it all. I had no car, no phone and no help. My youngest
son asked if he would be hurt like mommy. My heart broke. This
wasn’t the first time I had been knocked down or choked. I wanted
it to be the last.
We had to get out and we had nowhere to go. After hours of walking,
waiting and thinking we returned and I waited for him to go to work.
I applied for a SafeLink phone so we could sneak off in secrecy and I
created a plan for my family to escape. Soon, he knew something was

up but I continued on. I had a friend come with a truck to collect my
family and our things. This made my boyfriend lose his temper. He
told her to leave, said I wasn’t going anywhere.
As she left, I whispered we would try again when he went to work.
The time came and I called her. Everything seemed to be going
according to plan…until he showed up. (It turned out his mother saw
us and called him.) He threw a fit, yelling and taking my things out
of the truck, refusing to let me take anything. I didn’t know whether
to stay and fight, or leave everything we owned behind.
Well, I left.
I only had a few toys and some clothes so I contacted SPARCC
because I knew I needed safety and support. My advocate was so
motivating. She inspired a source of power I had forgotten I owned.
She helped me to realize I did have a beautiful family and that I was
in charge of our future. She was right. Since then, my life has changed
dramatically for the better. I started school, finished my first course
with a 96% and will be a CPA by March 2016! My boys are safe and
healthy.
It was the amazing people at SPARCC who empowered me. I
am more driven than ever because of my advocate’s overwhelming
confidence and now I can be a powerful example for my sons.
Because of SPARCC, this horrible situation has set me on the road
to greatness. They’ve helped me to rewrite my story… and begin my
happily ever after!

Help us grow tomorrow, by planning your gift today:
Join SPARCC’s Legacy Society.
A planned gift or bequest is more than a
charitable donation. It is a way to ensure a
stream of support for the future and allow
SPARCC to focus on ending domestic and
sexual violence. Your impact and
“Don’t judge each day by the harvest
you reap, but by the seeds you plant.”
commitment to our mission will live on
by including SPARCC as a beneficiary in
your will, retirement plan, IRA, living trust
or life insurance policy. All options ensure
one thing: SPARCC and the survivors we
serve will be surrounded by a community of
ongoing support.
The benefits to planned giving allow
both the donor and organization to feel
confident that the gift is making the
biggest impact possible. Planned giving is
also financially safe and savvy. When you
include a charitable bequest in your estate
plan, you have access to the assets during
your lifetime, ensuring the funds are there
if you need them to provide for unexpected
events. A charitable gift made through your
will, trust, or IRA may reduce assessed estate
taxes or even avoid taxation completely. In
addition, failing to plan means that state
law will direct property to be distributed
under a one-size-fits-all statutory formula.
A planned gift ensures that your finances,
assets, and possessions go to the people and
organization you care about.
We understand that Legacy decisions
take time and consideration. We invite
you to take a closer look at SPARCC and
our planned giving options. Your legacy
makes an incredible difference in the lives
of many and favorably impacts all the
work we do to stop domestic and sexual
violence. If you have any questions or want
more information, please contact Mary
Ellen Mancini, Director of Development
at (941) 365-0208 ext 106. If SPARCC is
already included in your estate plans, please
let us know so we can acknowledge you as
a SPARCC Legacy Society member and
recognize your everlasting support.
We will all be remembered for something.
Build your legacy now. No gift is too big or
too small, but every gift makes a difference.
Together we are saving lives today and
tomorrow.
Men of Courage
All around the world valuable “male
involvement projects” are being developed
and new programs are being implemented
for engaging men as partners for violence
prevention and healthy families. Well-known
and respected men, like former NFL head
coach, Tony Dungy and acclaimed actor,
Patrick Stewart, are talking a stand against
the silence surrounding domestic and sexual
violence. As a leader in this movement,
SPARCC too is proud to announce, that
for over one year, male involvement projects
have been incorporated into the services we
provide in our communities. Yes, collectively
we are encouraging and creating a society of
“No More.”
SPARCC’s Male Engagement Program
aligns with the organization’s goal of
being actively engaged in promoting social
1199_SPARCC_Newsletter_Fall2015.indd 4
change through community awareness and
education, and is designed to mobilize young
men and prevent sexual and dating violence.
Our program has engaged over 500 middle
and high school students and provided young
men in our communities an opportunity to
build individualized definitions of masculinity
and healthy relationships. In the first year
this program reached male youth with a
frequency of 3 to 5 times, for multi-session
presentations. SPARCC’s Male Engagement
Coordinator, Aaron Bellamy, has also done
extensive outreach with area coaches and will
expand to include these sports teams this fall.
By engaging young men in Sarasota and
DeSoto Counties with support and resources,
SPARCC is providing invaluable education
and encouragement to foster healthy
relationships, gender equality and respect. Part
2015 Men of Courage Breakfast in Arcadia
of SPARCC’s Male Engagement program
also includes the annual Men of Courage
breakfast — an event to reach everyday men
who are not sure how to help but refuse to
remain silent in the face of violence.
While most men are not violent in their
relationships, we believe that even one man
is one too many. This is why SPARCC is
committed to ending violence through
innovative prevention work engaging boys
and men. Watch for more exciting updates
on these programs and ways to get involved!
