Big Brothers Big Sisters of the sun coast IMPACT “ Knowing that I am making a difference in my Little’s life is truly inspiring and —Michael Zeller humbling at the same time. ” “ I love being a Big Sister. It allows me the opportunity to help a child in need. I enjoy interacting and learning from Ariana. I know I am making a positive difference in her life and she brings me a lot of joy along the way. ” —Amina Huebner A Message from the CEO I think of why I am passionate about Big Brothers Big Sisters and why each child can achieve success. The mission is very personal to me. The lessons I learned growing up in a small, rural community continue with me today. Our community valued family with a broader meaning transcending birth to a community family of neighbors and friends. We gathered for food, fun and friendship, leaning on one another and learning lessons of caring and compassion. My parents shared many guiding principles but one had profound Our Vision is for all children to achieve success in life. impact—“there, but for the grace of God, go I.” As a child I learned to value the positive impact of excellence and to passionately care for those that needed a hand up. We traveled to experience plays and museums and visited the library every month with an armful of books to connect us to the outside world. We were loved and cared for by the adults in that small rural community and I have spent over thirty years with a passionate desire for every child to enjoy the same. Yes, this is personal to me to fulfill the mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters. Every year I am truly touched by the support shown by our communities that indeed help us change the lives of our children for the better, forever! I am reminded and in awe of our staff who spend countless hours listening, advising, assessing, supporting and matching youth in every community. They do an amazing job! Barry Wolfson, Board Chair My wife Donna and I, as a couple, mentor a young boy named Esteban. He, like many of our Littles, is a child with boundless energy, imagination and potential. He has also faced numerous challenges in his young life. But the three of us, along with Esteban’s family, see the benefits of our mentoring relationship in his development, as well as, in the measurable impact on his grades, social interactions and values. As the adults in this relationship, the impact on us is not necessarily revealed in a metric but in the awesome joy we feel in our hearts. As we work towards our goal of reaching even more children in need, we hope that we can count on your support. Joy Mahler CEO Our Mission is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever. “ As his Big Brother, I am there to support him on his journey to becoming a college graduate. I love being a Big Brother and feel that our time together has had a lasting impact on each of us. ” —Brandon Johnson BIG Impact Success Initiatives Decisions to Win An adult mentor from the community works one-to-one with a high school student in this focused, intensive course consisting of an 18-lesson workbook on personal decision-making. 100% Gateway to Success To support at-risk students as they transition from middle school to high school, a series of “Success” activities focus on academic support, self esteem, motivation and career awareness. 97% of the Gateway to Success students improved their academic performance Sports Buddies Mentors and children meet twice a month to participate in or attend a sporting event, and receive reduced price tickets to many events. 970 tickets were donated to the Sports Buddies program With 96% match participation of seniors completing the Decisions to Win program graduated from high school 90% of the students in the program improved their reading comprehension 96% of the youth in the program avoided acts of juvenile delinquency Reading Bigs Promotes a love of literature among children at risk of failing the FSA reading section, and improves comprehension by reading aloud, discussing books, and writing or drawing responses to the material.
