We provide high-quality language services to businesses, government institutions and semi-public organizations. We also offer an extensive range of group language courses on an open enrolment basis for private individuals and corporate clients alike. UvA Talen’s translation department is a key player in the Dutch translation market. The language training centre is unique in the greater Amsterdam area on account of the extensive course selection and rapid learning curve. UvA Talen also offers copywriting and other general language services. UvA Talen was established in early 2008 following a merger between the universityaffiliated companies Uva Vertalers and The Language Academy. Prior to the merger, both parties already were leading in their respective sectors. Focusing primarily on translation services, UvA Vertalers also had established a solid reputation as a high-quality supplier of editing, correction and copywriting services. The Language Academy had been a trusted name in the field of language instruction for many years. In fact, the company offered the most extensive array of open enrolment-based group language courses in the greater Amsterdam area. All of these activities have now been brought together in one organization: UvA Talen, the University of Amsterdam’s independent academic language centre. 1 Our Clients UvA Talen has an extensive roster of clients in the Netherlands and abroad, including dozens of renowned companies and institutions. Many of our clients have been relying on our services for years. It would be impossible to list all of our valued and diverse clients here, but we would like to offer an impression of the organizations that choose to benefit from the service, speed and quality that UvA Talen offers: T H E A C A D E M I C BUSINESS CLIENTS · KLM/Air France · Hitachi Construction Machinery · Corus · IKEA Netherlands · Van Dale Lexicografie · Barclays Capital · ABN Amro · Randstad Uitzendbureau · Vedior · Deloitte · Shell Global Solutions · British American Tobacco · Nuon L A N G U A G E GOVERNMENT · The House of Representatives of the Netherlands · Department of State · Department of General Affairs · City of Amsterdam · City of Utrecht · Nationaal Archief · Directorate-General of Public Works and Water Management · Academy for Government Information and Communication C E N T R E 2 PR AND MARKETING · Pleon · Fleishman-Hillard · Lewis Communications · HS Publicity ART AND CULTURE · Royal Tropical Institute (KIT) Tropenmuseum · NEMO Science Centre · Hermitage Amsterdam · Nieuwe Kerk Amsterdam · Rijksmuseum · Keukenhof · Aboriginal Art Museum · FOAM · Van Gogh Museum · Gemeentemuseum Den Haag · Theater Instituut Nederland · Netherlands Institute for Cultural Heritage · Waanders Publishers · Stichting CPNB ICT AND TELECOMMUNICATIONS · KPN · MessageLabs · Freecom SCIENCE, RESEARCH AND EDUCATION · Energy research Centre of the Netherlands (ECN) · University of Amsterdam · Tilburg University · Hogeschool van Amsterdam, University of Applied Sciences · Erasmus University · The Academic Medical Center, Amsterdam · Erasmus Medical Centre · Conservatorium Amsterdam · Fugro Engineers · Koninklijke Bibliotheek · Netherlands Institute for War Documentation NON-PROFIT · Medecins sans Frontieres (MSF) · Greenpeace International · Netherlands Cancer Institute · Prince Claus Fund · Consument en Veiligheid · Netherlands Bar Association · Mama Cash Translations L A N G U A G E S E R V I C E S UvA Talen’s translation department is the University of Amsterdam’s independent text and translation agency. With its roots in the academic community, over the past 15 years this agency − until recently known as UvA Vertalers − has become a key player in virtually every sector of the translation market in the Netherlands. Our agency is the preferred supplier of high-quality translations for numerous companies and institutions in business and government. UvA Talen caters to the translation needs of a diverse range of organizations including the Dutch House of Representatives, IKEA Netherlands, Energy research Centre of the Netherlands (ECN), Hitachi Construction Machinery Europe and, naturally, the University of Amsterdam. UvA Talen primarily focuses on translations intended for the general public, such as websites, brochures and marketing texts. But we also translate product manuals, internal correspondence and reports. We have specialized translators to meet technical, medical and legal translation needs, too. An overview of our areas of expertise is listed on page 4. Editing Services The difference between an ordinary text and a great one often lies in the details. Our job is to make that difference. At UvA Talen, no text leaves our office without being carefully checked fi rst. All of our translations are reviewed by our staff of editors and corrected accordingly before we send them to our clients. In addition to checking our own translations, we also correct and polish many of our clients’ documents. For instance, we have helped a large number of researchers from the University of Amsterdam and other institutions prepare their English-language academic publications for print. Imagine: you know what you want to say and you have written your text, but you have some doubts regarding grammar and spelling. Should it be there, they’re or their? Or perhaps you have written a contribution for a conference. Your English is good, but you are not a native speaker. What was the rule about the tenses again: should it be I was or I have been? If you have a rough draft or a publication that is almost finished and you want to make sure that you have dotted all the i’s and crossed all the t’s, we are here to help. Our editors and proofreaders will be happy to review your text and apply the finishing touches. Plus, not only do we enjoy doing a thorough job, we can do so very quickly if necessary. The presses are ready to roll, your deadline is looming, but you still have some doubts about the correct word order or spelling? Send us your text and we will make sure that your hard work is not in vain. We can edit any type of text: from user manuals to corporate brochures and from newsletters to web content. For more information on what we can do for you, please contact us. 3 L A N G U A G E Copywriting Areas of Expertise UvA Talen is not an advertising agency. Copywriting might not be the fi rst thing that comes to mind when you see our name – however, many of our clients regularly ask us to write newsletters, press releases and marketing texts for them. And although it is true that we are not an advertising agency, we have come up with quite a few ads, too. UvA Talen is an all-round translation agency, which means that we can translate any type of business document. We offer copywriting services in Dutch as well as in a number of other languages, particularly German, English, Spanish and French. UvA Talen’s copywriters are not only fluent in the language of their audience, but they also understand its cultural nuances. A press release for the French market, for example, requires a significantly different approach than a similar version for Dutch or German readers. Some of our recent advertising texts covered a wide range of subjects including tourist destinations, flowers and cosmetic surgery. We have also produced reports on conferences, master classes and business events. Other assignments require us to combine writing and translation. For example, we translated and then fully re-wrote Dutch brochures and recruitment texts to tailor them to the US market. We organize language courses for private individuals as well as business and government organizations. We also offer an extensive array of open enrolment-based group courses for individuals and business clients. On the following pages you will find information about our range of language courses and the various options we have to offer businesses and individuals. UvA Talen can help you learn a language both quickly and thoroughly − on your own terms. Corporate/Individual Training Programmes One of our core activities is providing language courses customized to meet the needs of groups or individuals. For the business market, we provide courses that are tailored to fit the diverse backgrounds and specific needs of our clients. This often involves teaching small groups or individual participants. Examples include medical English courses for medical secretaries, writing reports in Dutch for a group of scientists, or private Spanish lessons for an entrepreneur interested in the Spanish-speaking market. We also offer courses on giving presentations as well as preparatory courses and workshops for internationally recognized tests such as TOEFL, IELTS and the five Cambridge ESOL Exams. UvA Talen also specializes in the development of language tests and exams, language evaluations and tests used in job application procedures. For example, we have been testing the language skills of KLM/Air France flight crew for many years, and for the University of Amsterdam we are responsible for testing and if necessary improving the staff’s English language skills. All of our courses are designed to meet the wishes and expectations of our clients. The opportunities are virtually unlimited. We can provide corporate and individual language instruction at UvA Talen in central Amsterdam, on site at your office or even in your home. Please contact our Corporate/Individual Training Programmes department for more information or to make an appointment to discuss the possibilities without any obligation. 5 L A N G U A G E T R A I N I N G P R O G R A M M E S Who Have Enjoyed UvA Talen’s Language Training Services? Our regularly scheduled series of language courses at various levels in ten different languages runs several times a year. Although a number of companies refer their employees to our open enrolment group courses, all of these courses are open to any individual who wishes to improve their language proficiency. Each year, over 1,000 participants come to UvA Talen to improve or acquire language skills. After completing a language course, many participants go ahead and enrol in the next level. To us, this clearly shows that our group language courses meet our participants’ high expectations. The best way to learn a language is to communicate, and our group courses offer plenty of opportunities to do so. We work in small groups with a minimum of four and a maximum of 12 participants, which allows our instructors to give participants the individual attention they deserve. The limited group size also promotes UvA Talen provides open-enrolment group courses for the following languages: Chinese Dutch English French Italian Portuguese Russian Spanish Swedish interaction between the participants. Students are encouraged to actively participate and to contribute to the lessons in order to bring out the best in themselves and their fellow classmates. Group language lessons are taught once or several times a week at set times and locations. In addition to classroom activities our instructors also assign a considerable amount of homework. The purpose of the language courses is to raise the participants’ proficiency level in a very short time, which requires real effort on the part of the participants. Spending a few hours each week on homework accelerates your learning curve and enables us to pay extra attention to conversation and role play during the lessons. We are able to present every aspect of the language in our thorough, results-oriented language courses. Open enrolment group lessons are an excellent way to learn the nuances of a foreign language. Naturally, you can also learn other languages at UvA Talen. Our courses are open to individuals and businesses, and can be fully tailored to your needs and wishes. We will be happy to discuss the many options available in order to meet your corporate or individual language training needs. 7 Our Instructors T H E We work with qualified instructors who have years of experience in adult education. In addition to their experience and expertise we also select our instructors according to their ability to cater to the needs of individual participants. Most of the instructors at UvA Talen are native speakers of the languages they teach. However, we sometimes choose to assign what we call ‘near-native’ instructors to teach certain classes, especially at the lower levels. After all, they have learned the language as a second language, too, which gives them unique insight into various pitfalls and tricks associated with learning the language. They know how to deal with these and are more familiar with the basic challenges inherent to learning a specific foreign language. The advantage to having a native speaker* for an instructor is obvious, especially for advanced students. These instructors know their language inside and out and are qualified to share their knowledge with others. A C A D E M I C *Our use of the term ‘native speaker’ is not intended to exclude anyone. L A N G U A G E Of course there are instructors who are not native speakers but possess the knowledge and skill to help others learn a language more effectively than many native speakers could. Our experience, however, is that qualified instructors teaching their native tongue are rarely equalled by non-native speakers. C E N T R E 8 Your Initial Level In order for a group course to be successful, it is essential for all participants to start at the same level. Therefore, with the exception of the absolute beginner levels, each language course includes a simple intake procedure. Once you have registered for a language course you will be given a personal login code to access an online evaluation test on a secure part of our website. You can complete this test at your convenience. The next step is a 15-minute interview with one of our instructors in order to evaluate your verbal proficiency level. This conversation is usually conducted over the phone, but arrangements can be made to schedule it at our office. When you register for one of our writing courses you will also receive a brief writing evaluation assignment. Once you have completed all of the intake evaluations we will determine the appropriate course level for you. International Standard All of our language courses are based on the European Framework of Reference, an internationally recognized standard for language levels developed by the Council of Europe. This gives you a concrete indication of the language level you can expect to achieve by the end of each course. The level is also printed on the certificate that you will receive upon satisfactory completion of the fi nal test. For more information on the European Framework of Reference, please see page 10. G R O U P How to Enrol You can enrol for a group language course either online or by post. To enrol online, go to our website www.uvatalen.nl and either click on the ‘Enrol now’ button or go to the ‘Group courses’ page and click on the ‘Enrol for a course!’ button in the right-hand box. You will be directed to the online registration site. You can also use the registration form on page 27. To request a registration form by mail or as a PDF file via e-mail, please write to [email protected] or call: +31 (0)20 – 525 4637. L A N G U A G E C O U R S E S Tuition Discounts UvA Talen offers attractive tuition discounts to loyal participants. If you wish to advance to the next level after completing a language course, or if you wish to enrol for another course, we offer a discount on your next course. We apply this discount scheme liberally, in some cases up to two years after your first language course. We also offer discounts to students in higher education, employees of the University of Amsterdam and members of the University’s alumni association AUV. For more information on the various discounts available, please refer to the Terms & Conditions of Enrolment on page 26. 9 International Standard: The European Framework of Reference All of our training programmes are linked to the European Framework of Reference, the internationally recognized standard for language levels developed by the Council of Europe. We also use this system for corporate and individual training programmes. This way our participants know exactly which level they will have reached by the end of their course. This level is also stated on the course certificate, which you will be awarded upon successful completion of our group language course final test. The course descriptions show which proficiency level you can reach with each course. The UvA Talen intake procedure is also based on the European Framework of Reference. During the months of July, August and September, we offer intensive courses for all proficiency levels. This course is intended for those who have little or no prior knowledge of the Dutch language. The focus is largely on real-life situations because most beginners initially require Dutch for everyday use. For example, participants learn how to introduce themselves to Dutch speakers, how to have short telephone conversations in Dutch and how to ask for items in stores and restaurants. Participants become acquainted with the basic rules of Dutch grammar and learn to read simple texts. Our experienced instructors conduct dynamic lessons, and the relatively small size of the group allows them to give participants individual attention, too. Each course concludes with a final test. Upon successful completion, you will receive a certificate allowing you to proceed to the next level. Dutch Beginners Intensive End level: A2.2 This popular course was developed specifically for those who wish to gain a basic understanding of the Dutch language in a very short time. UvA Talen offers an intensive four-week course every month. These courses require 2.5 hours of lessons and five hours of self-study every day. The combination of daily lessons and homework helps participants to hold simple but smooth conversations with Dutch speakers in a very short time. This course is designed for those who have little or no prior knowledge of the Dutch language. The focus is largely on real-life situations because most beginners initially require Dutch for everyday use. For example, participants learn how to introduce themselves to Dutch speakers, how to have short telephone conversations in Dutch and how to ask for items in stores and restaurants. Although the emphasis is on speaking and on reading simple texts, the instructor will also pay some attention to writing skills. Participants will learn to actively use approximately 1,000 words, and to passively understand an additional 2,000. Our experienced instructors conduct dynamic lessons, and the relatively small size of the group allows them to give participants sufficient individual attention, too. The course pays considerable attention to every essential aspect of the Dutch language: speaking, reading, listening and writing. Upon completion of the Intermediate I course, participants will be experienced enough to be considered independent users of the Dutch language at which level they can follow simple films or television programmes, and find it increasingly easy to deal with everyday situations in Dutch. The Intermediate II course enables participants to understand news broadcasts, as well as fairly detailed information on topics such as their native country. They are able to discuss things that interest them and make more sophisticated use of language and vocabulary. State Exam Preparatory Course (Staatsexamen II) End level: B2.2 / C1.1 Over the past few years, increasingly higher demands have been placed on Dutch language proficiency for immigrants who not speak Dutch as their native language. Passing the Staatsexamen (State Exam) NT2II is considered a widely-accepted proof of fluency in the Dutch language. This exam was originally designed as an entrance exam for Dutch universities and other institutions of higher learning, but today more and more employers are requiring new non-native employees to take it. Our special preparatory course for this important exam is completely geared towards the requirements placed on the participants. This course increases the participants’ likelihood of passing the exam; none of the participants who have taken the course have failed the State Exam. FORMAT GROUP SIZE T H E Upon completion of the Advanced I course, participants will begin to notice that they have a deeper understanding of Dutch language and culture, and are able to talk about subjects such as politics, current events and technological developments. During the months of July, August and September we offer an intensive version of almost all of our standard open enrolment group courses. Participants learn all of the skills applicable to the course level over a maximum period of four weeks. The summer programme was originally set up to accommodate students planning a summer holiday to a country where they did not speak the language. Consequently, the or ig inal emphasis was on the lang uages of the most popular European holiday destinations: French, Spanish and Italian. Thanks to the programme’s success, we have been able to expand the selection over the years, and we now also offer businessrelated courses, such as English@Work and Writing Papers in English. C O U R S E S The lessons are scheduled during the daytime, three to five days a week. The intensity of the lessons, the small groups and the personal coaching enable participants to significantly improve their language proficiency in just a few weeks. This is ideal not only for travellers but also for professionals who wish to take advantage of the summer holidays to improve their language skills. Furthermore, by offering the same programme three months in a row, the summer courses are also perfect for those who wish to boost their proficiency several levels within a short period of time. Upon completion of one course, participants can immediately proceed to the next level! We post our upcoming summer course schedule on our website each spring, but please feel free to contact us sooner if you would like more information. We advise you to register early for our summer courses. We receive hundreds of registrations each year and classes tend to fill up quickly. 25 Terms & Conditions of Enrolment If you wish to participate in an UvA Talen BV language course, please make sure that: 1. the registration form has been filled in completely and signed; 2. the method of payment is indicated on the registration form (direct debit, cash, bank transfer or invoice); 3. the course fee has been paid before the start of the course.
