MetroPCS Orange Bowl Basketball Classic
The 21st annual MetroPCS Orange Bowl
Basketball Classic will feature one of the most
competitive fields ever as two teams who made
it to the final four in their respective college
basketball post-season tournaments will
face opponents from major conferences. The
Florida Gators, the number one overall seed in
the 2014 NCAA Men’s Division I Tournament,
will take on the Demon Deacons of Wake
Forest out of the highly competitive Atlantic
Coast Conference (ACC). The Florida State
Seminoles, a number one seed in the 2014
National Invitational Tournament (NIT), will
face in-state opponent the University of
South Florida Bulls from the American Athletic
Conference (AAC).
The 2014 MetroPCS Orange Bowl Basketball
Classic will be held on Saturday, December
20 at BB&T Center in Sunrise, FL. This will
mark the 10th consecutive year the Classic will
be held at BB&T Center. Game times will be
announced at a later date.
The Florida Gators will be making their 16th
appearance in the Classic and have a 13-2
record all-time. Last season, UF set a schoolrecord 30 game winning streak. The SEC

Walk/Run at Markham Park in Sunrise, FL Credit: Make-A-Wish Southern Florida
The Orange Bowl supports numerous South Florida organizations
and strives to provide unique opportunities for those in need.
The Orange Bowl proudly served as sponsor for Make-A-Wish
Southern Florida’s 5th Annual Walk For Wishes® 5k Walk/Run
on Saturday February 8, 2014 at Markham Park in Sunrise, FL.
The goal of the event was to raise funds to help grant the wishes of
children with life-threatening medical conditions.
More than 1,300 people participated this year, which is about 1000
more people than last year. The event raised more than $170,000.
With those contributions, Make-A-Wish generated enough funds to
grant the heartfelt wishes of 34 children in our local community.
“It’s an honor and a privilege to be involved with Make-A-Wish
Southern Florida,” said Eric Poms, CEO of the Orange Bowl. “It’s
a great cause and changes lives. That’s what we’re all about, giving
back to the community. “We have hosted Wish Kids at the past
two Discover Orange Bowls and the 2013 Discover BCS National
Championship and it’s rewarding to be able to bring a little joy into
their lives at such a challenging time.”
Besides sponsoring Walk For Wishes®, most Orange Bowl staff
members participated in the 5k Walk/Run, provided snacks and
beverages as well as prizes for participants and their families.
The Orange Bowl partnered with Sunshine Health, a subsidiary
of Centene Corporation, at the City of Fort Lauderdale Orange
Bowl Downtown Countdown on New Year’s Eve to create a special
graffiti wall with messages of hope and compassion for Make-AWish Southern Florida. The graffiti wall was presented to them at
the event.

A Courageous Comeback
San José State’s Anthony Larceval Defies Odds to Get Back on the Field
and New Year’s. It hurts.”
Larceval lost 40 pounds and needed outpatient speech, physical,
occupational and recreational therapy to recover. Although the
San José State medical staff said he would miss the 2013 season,
Anthony defied the prognosis and was back with the team at the
start of preseason camp in August.
“My mother definitely didn’t want me to come back and play,”
Larceval said. “My dad was pushing me to move on. All the time I
was thinking of my three younger brothers and that was motivation
to come back and do everything and my teammates wearing my
name and number in the Military Bowl. Seeing their reactions
when I came back on field was tremendous.”
On Dec. 14, 2012, Larceval was admitted to the hospital and diagnosed with viral
meningoencephalitis. After slipping into unconsciousness, he didn’t awake until
Jan. 5, 2013.
San José State’s Anthony Larceval was named the winner of the
2013 Discover Orange Bowl-FWAA Courage Award.
Larceval becomes the second player from San José State to win the
Courage Award after Neil Parry (2003), now a graduate assistant
defensive coach on the Spartans football team.
Larceval was honored on the field during the 2014 Discover Orange
Bowl on Jan. 3. He received his trophy at the AvMed Coaches
Luncheon presented by Deloitte on Jan. 2.
During the Spartans’ 6-6 2013 season, Larceval made nine tackles
(six unassisted) and had one quarterback hurry. He is a child
development major who wants to become a teacher and/or a coach.
Parry, who suffered a compound fracture during a 2000 game that
led to a partial amputation of his right leg, became the first player
to come back and play college football with a prosthetic leg in
2003.
See Page 10
The 6-2, 284-pound defensive tackle from Spring Valley, California.,
was named second team All-Western Athletic Conference in 2012,
but he never made it to the team’s bowl practices. On Dec. 14,
2012, he was admitted to the hospital and diagnosed with viral
meningoencephalitis, a virus that infects and causes swelling in the
brain.
After slipping into unconsciousness, he didn’t awake until Jan. 5,
2013 and completely missed San José State’s 29-20 Military Bowl
victory over Bowling Green on Dec. 27, 2012.
“I think back a lot on it,” Larceval said. “I went a month without
knowing any part of my life.I essentially lost a month. I reflect on it,
knowing I missed the Military Bowl, Christmas, my dad’s birthday
Larceval was recognized as the recipient of the Courage Award winner at the

Comeback

“After all he had gone through, he is one of the first coaches,
persons around San José State to come to me and put his arm
around me and let me know he was there for me in every way,”
Larceval said. “When he told me to never give up, that was big
encouragement. It was the only thing I could control.”
“To see where Anthony was and to see what he went through,
nobody thought he was going to be able to come back and play
football again. When he got out of the hospital, comes into the
(football) office, to see the shape he was in, to be able to get back
on to the field is one thing, but to be productive is another,” Parry
said. “Anthony is a great young man and put a lot of work into
coming back this year. He did a heck of a job just to get back to a
normal life and to get back to being a Division I football player is
another. It’s very fitting for Anthony to receive this award.”
A select group of writers from the FWAA vote on the winner each
year. The requirements for nomination include displaying courage
on or off the field, including overcoming an injury or physical
handicap, preventing a disaster or living through hardship.
“Anthony’s story was quite unusual and moving,” said FWAA
Executive Director Steve Richardson. “We had numerous good
stories of players and others who personified what this award is all
about. His was certainly compelling.”
Previous winners of the FWAA’s Courage Award are Clemson
wide receiver Daniel Rodriguez (2012), Michigan State offensive
lineman Arthur Ray Jr. (2011), Rutgers defensive tackle Eric
LeGrand (2010), the University of Connecticut football team
(2009), Tulsa’s Wilson Holloway (2008), Navy’s Zerbin Singleton
(2007), Clemson’s Ray Ray McElrathbey (2006), the Tulane
football team (2005), Memphis’ Haracio Colen (2004), San José
State’s Neil Parry (2003) and Toledo’s William Bratton (2002).

Ives Estates Park
Continued from page 1
On January 6, 2009, the Orange Bowl cut the ribbon and unveiled the renovations at Moore Park in Miami, the site of the
Palm Festival, the predessor to the Orange Bowl.
The local community will also benefit from the project, as Ives
Estates Park will be able to attract a greater range of youth athletic
competitions and community activities.
This is the Orange Bowl’s third Legacy Gift to the South Florida
community. In January 2011, the Orange Bowl, in conjunction
with the City of Miami, cut the ribbon on Orange Bowl Field at
Moore Park, a much needed youth football stadium and facilities at
urban Miami’s inner city Moore Park. It was the culmination of a
legacy gift initiative the Orange Bowl spearheaded in recognition
of its 75th anniversary in 2008-09. Moore Park is the site of the
1933 and 1934 Palm Festivals, the predecessor of the Orange Bowl
Festival.
In 2013, the Orange Bowl, in conjunction with the City of Fort
Lauderdale cut the ribbon to unveil renovations to Joseph C. Carter
Park in Fort Lauderdale. Renovations at Carter Park included the
installation of a new synthetic turf football field, now called Orange
Bowl Field at Carter Park, an eight lane track, enhanced spectator
areas and new scoreboard.
Combined, the Orange Bowl Legacy Gift projects have provided
approximately $10 million worth of improvements toward the
beautification of the South Florida community and recreational park
activities for residents and their families.
On January 5, 2013, the Orange Bowl cut the ribbon and unveiled the renovations at Carter Park in Fort Lauderdale.

regular season and tournament champions went undefeated (21-0)
in the conference. They finished the regular season ranked number
one in the AP and USA Today Coaches Polls. Last season marked
the fourth consecutive year the Gators made it to the Elite Eight.
The Wake Forest Demon Deacons will make their first appearance
in the Classic but it will be the second for first year head coach
Danny Manning. He faced FSU in 2012 as head coach of the Tulsa
Hurricanes. The Seminoles came out on top with a 82-63 victory.
Wake Forest is coming off a 17-16 season which included big wins
over Duke, North Carolina and NIT Final Four team, Clemson.
A roster stacked with talented sophomores, Wake Forest’s young
team received plenty of experience against some of the nation’s
top teams this past season which should make for a great matchup
against a high-caliber Florida team in December.
Florida State is back to make its sixth appearance. They are
4-1 all-time in Classic. Last year, in the 20th annual MetroPCS
Orange Bowl Basketball Classic, they handed the University
of Massachusetts (#22) its first loss of the season in a closely
contested game, 60-55. Last season, Leonard Hamilton’s Seminoles
also had big wins over VCU (#10), Clemson and Pittsburgh. Their
resume helped them land an invitation and a number one seeding in
the NIT, where they made it to the national semi-final, falling just
one game short of the championship.
