along with Wheeler and

play out of the mess, while
back-up netminder Sheldon
Primeau was called upon for
mop-up duty.
Sadly, the Tikis couldn’t let it
go at that, as Doug Utting took
his first opportunity to drive
into Primeau, earning the
Brockville player some time in
the sin bin.
As Char-Lan’s head coach,
Chris Eamon, noted after the
final buzzer, this was the chippiest game his boys had played
in all season.
The Tikis took 95 minutes in
penalties overall, while the
Rebs got the all-important victory to keep the division standings tight.

team could find the hoop in
the first quarter.
The Spartans eventually capitalized on a few Crusader
defensive breakdowns while
holding Char-Lan to a single
free throw in the half for an 81 advantage.
After the break, the
Crusaders closed the gap to 85, but although they had many
quality shots, the girls simply
could not buy a basket when it
counted, ending up on the
wrong side of an 11-5 score
that allowed Seaway to move
on to the consolation final
against St. Joseph’s while ending the season for Char-Lan.
Smith’s three points led the
Char-Lan girls in offence.
Developing the talent
In other basketball news, Jim
Fourney, coach of Char-Lan’s
senior team that competed at
OFSAA again this year, will be
running a Grade 9-10 girls
exhibition travelling team
again this winter. Tryouts and
practices begin this week.
Hanz Schulz, coach of the
Char-Lan midget team, will be
running an elementary basketball league again this winter,
starting in February, for both
boys and girls..
The goal of both programs
based in Williamstown is to
develop local basketball talent.
– files from Hanz Schulz
Char-Lan had just one game
last week, noting the team has
been hampered by illness,
injury, and absences of late,
with a number of the players
hurt and/or sick.
As well, each game seems to
see the Rebs call upon an affiliate to round out the roster,
and it was no different last
Saturday, as Nelson Cecereu
and Tyler Filion joined the
ranks.
As for goal scoring, aside
from the Wheeler tally which
actually was the rookie’s second of the game, Rebels Justin
Villeneuve, Travis Locey, and
Troy Gove found the back of
the Brockville net.
Earning assists were Ryan
Herrington (2), Derrick
Villeneuve (2), Taylor Eamon (2),
Gove, Vince Quesnel, and
Theriault.
Primeau made three saves in
net to secure the win for
Chretien.
Clash of the grandsons
The general manager of
Char-Lan, John Chafee, may
have faced some split loyalties
in the game, as he got to watch
two grandsons square off on
opposite sides.
While Taylor Eamon skates
for the Rebels, Tanner Benton
is a Tiki, though Chafee joked
he asked the Char-Lan coach
to take advantage of last
change and try to keep the two
boys apart.
Benton got one assist and
took one minute penalty in the
game, while Eamon earned a
pair of helpers.

Commitment
One Rebel wasn’t even sure
if he would make it to the
game, but he did, reaching the
rink as Char-Lan skated in the
warm-up. Rookie blueliner
Jacob Dawson had been in
Oshawa earlier in the day competing at the provincial volleyball championship with his
high school teammates from
Holy Trinity, but rushed back
to Williamstown immediately
after the last match as he was
determined to suit up for the
Rebels.
Dawson wears #25 for CharLan and is seeing a regular
shift on defence in this his first
junior hockey campaign.

Complicating matters for the
Alexandria squad was the
absence of three big members
of the roster. Emilien Dupont
was unable to make the game,
while Eric Morter remains out
with an upper body injury. As
well, MacHabee missed the
contest due to work commitments.
While the coach admits a
number of others Glens played
hurt, he says he enjoys playing
in Westport’s smaller rink
where “you see who has character and who doesn’t.”
In those cozy confines, he
says, “Things happen quickly,”
calling the facility “a rink for
men, not boys.”
The Glens were assessed a
total of 57 minutes of penalties
to 51 for Westport, much of
that coming in the third
period.
These infractions were largely roughing calls.
The opening phrase featured
a donnybrook between
Alexandria’s Jared McDonald
and Taylor Gamble of
Westport.
Hugo Pouliot and Simpson
were the marksmen for the
Glens. Assists went to Curtis
Lapierre, Tyler O’Brien, and
Tousignant.
Two former Char-Lan players, Max Ming and Danny
Hincks, are part of the
Westport squad this season.
Hincks got his name on the
scoresheet with an assist and a
second-period minor penalty
for hooking.
Quann was in net for the
loss, facing 39 shots.
Busy week ahead
This will be a busy week for

The midget girls basketball
season ended for Char-Lan on
Monday with the Crusaders
battling in the consolation
round.
The girls met Tagwi in the
opener. The teams traded baskets early on, but then CharLan’s defence held the
Warriors for the balance of the
quarter as Char-Lan took a 6-2
lead.
In the second quarter, Tagwi
closed the gap to 12-10, while
in the third period, the
Warriors capitalized off the
halftime break to come out flying.
Tagwi held the Crusaders to
just a single point from the
foul line, while scoring seven
themselves to go up 17-13.
However, in the fourth quarter, it was Char-Lan’s turn to
regroup, as the girls adopted a
power line to totally shut
down the Tagwi offence while
scoring nine unanswered
points for a 22-17 win.
Top scorers for Char-Lan
were Emma Fraser with nine
points, and Michaela Smith
with seven.
In the next match, the
Crusaders met Seaway, a team

Char-Lan snapped a mini
two-game slump on Saturday
night, battling for a 5-3 win
against the visiting Brockville
Tikis.
And it was a wild ride to
boot, as the Rebs let a 3-1 lead
slip away only to see Ramsey
Wheeler’s short-handed tally
in the third set off a brouhaha
that involved everyone on the
ice, including both netminders,
and a player who joined the
fray from the Brockville bench.
It all started when CharLan’s Derrick Villeneuve was
assessed two minor penalties
with the game tied at 3-3.
The Tikis controlled the
attack as play resumed, only to
have Char-Lan clear the puck
the length of the ice.
Brockville goalie Ryan
Bishop skated out in an
attempt to clear the puck, but
Wheeler got there first, snapping the disc into the yawning
cage for the go-ahead marker
with 4:13 left on the game
clock.
Bishop was none too pleased,
going at the Rebel verbally at
first, before dropping the
gloves as chaos ensued.
With Char-Lan having only
four skaters on the ice, when
Tiki Brayden Krusch joined the
antics from the Brockville
bench, the Rebels were seriously outnumbered, a fact that
wasn’t lost on goalkeeper Alex
Chretien at the other end of
the ice as he made the decision
to skate 200 feet to join the
party.

Char-Lan settles for consolation win
BY SEAN BRAY
Sports Editor
It certainly wasn’t what the
Crusaders hoped for when
they qualified for the OFSAA
girls basketball tournament for
the fifth straight year, but an
early loss pushed Char-Lan
into the consolation pool
where the girls found some
solace in winning the consolation title.
The 2008 silver medallists at
OFSAA were coming off a loss
at this year’s EOSSAA final, but
kicked off their 2009 provincial
campaign in fine form with a
decisive 51-25 victory against
Runnymede
Collegiate
Institute.
However, in game two it was
a different story, as the sixthseeded Crusaders were upset
by Elmwood School, ranked
11th. Char-Lan trailed from the
early going of the opening
quarter, eventually losing 62-45
to be bounced from medal contention.
In the consolation pool, the
girls began with a 43-35 victory
over Mitchell District High
School, followed by a 39-34
win against #4 Rockway
Mennonite Collegiate, the
team Char-Lan lost to in last
year’s OFSAA gold medal final.
With that triumph, a form of
redemption, the Crusaders
moved on to the consolation
final against Nouvelle-Alliance.
Char-Lan got on the board
first when Krista Chaddock
capitalized with a pair from the
free throw line.
The Grade 10 student playing up at the senior level for
much of this season was a rock
all year at the line.
Having recently turned 15,
she “will be quite a player” in
the years ahead, notes the
team’s assistant coach, Bob
Blackadder, in reflecting on the
Crusaders’ performance at the
tournament.
Aside from her success foul
shooting, Chaddock was a
solid contributor in other ways
too, counting six assists in the
consolation final.
It was a “very exciting game,”
says Blackadder, with Les
Tornades tying it up at 33
points apiece with less than a
minute remaining.
In the overtime session,
Char-Lan’s Vicky Chaddock
stole the ball late, setting up
Elissa de Wit to put the
Crusaders up by three.
By the buzzer, the lead was
five, and Char-Lan was the
consolation champion.
For de Wit who will graduate
next June and looks forward to
a promising career of university basketball, that round-two
loss was a tough one to swallow, but as she points out, “The
way we see it, is that all teams
at OFSAA are very good; otherwise they wouldn’t be
there.”
She adds, “We played well,
but it was simple mistakes that
hurt us.” And she isn’t quite
ready to put away her basketball shoes for the season just
yet, as de Wit will suit up
through the winter for the
competitive
Gloucester
Wolverines.
Blackadder, in looking at de
Wit’s role with the Crusaders.
notes she “carries the burden”
for the team, though adds, all
players stepped up their game
for OFSAA.
The assistant coach also
pointed what he called “invisible” contributions players
make, aspects that don’t show
up on a scoresheet.

Hosting the provincial high school basketball
championship this year, Holy Trinity Catholic
Secondary School was looking for its senior girls
to ride a seventh seeding as long as they could.
With a bronze medal from 2008 still fresh in
their memories, the Falcons began well at home,
ringing off three straight wins to reach the semifinal round.
And just as happened last year, the girls fell
short, dropping a hard-fought 44-39 decision to
the É.S. Confédération Jaguars from Welland, a
team that would go on to claim OFSAA gold.
Boisterous HT supporters and strong performances from Katherine Lemoine (15 points) and
Angela Levac (10 points) just could not overcome the gutsy Jags who led from the outset.
So as the girls had done a year ago, the 2009
Falcons found themselves in the bronze medal
match, facing fifth-seeded Elliot Lake Secondary
School.
The Atoms, as they are called, held a fourpoint advantage after the first quarter, extending their lead to nine points by halftime.
It was 10 after three periods, but in the final
frame, the Falcons turned up the heat, clawing

HT Coach Dave McCabe called a timeout, and
as play resumed, the Falcons worked to kill the
clock. However, both teams ended up with
cracks at the basket, as the lead see-sawed back
and forth.
Lemoine fouled out, but her teammates continued to press the attack as HT was down by
just a single point. Both Levac sisters, Angela
and Natalie, had rushed the basket in the dying
seconds, but the Falcons could not drain one,
ending up falling 54-53 in a thriller.
Holy Trinity received the antique bronze
medal for a fourth-place finish, while Elliot Lake
earned bronze.
The OFSAA silver went to Rideau District

In their first ever trip to

On Monday, Char-Lan lost 4-1 to St. Joseph’s,
and Coach Sean O’Farrell says the Crusaders’
goalies stood on their heads, though the rest of
the team has plenty to work on before they host
the Panthers next Monday at 3:30 p.m.
Meanwhile, new Gaels Coach Andrew Falcioni
says his GD squad will focus on defence first
when the boys take to the ice in league play.

OFSA A BOYS VOLLEYBALL
after the first day of competition, with the tie-breaking formula placing the boys fourth
and in the consolation pool.
In the consolation quarterfinal, Holy Trinity topped
Acton DHS in straight sets,
winning 25-22 and 25-20.
However, their run was
stopped in the semis, when the
Falcons lost to Greenwood
(25-20, 26-24).
Kevin Aleinik, one of the key
members of the Falcons,
watched proceedings from the
bench as he continues to
recover from a broken ankle
suffered in football.
