STEP 2 DESIGN PROCESS

We put together a mood board with various
design ideas and suggested materials. After the
client makes a design selection, a discussion
and design process is followed where if
necessary additional conceptual designs are
prepared until a nal concept is approved and
signed off by the client.

MANUFACTURE
STEP1 INITIAL CONTACT
The concept design is enlarged to full scale. The
mosaic tiles are cut and glued to a paper face.
The completed mosaic is cut into sections,
numbered and packed into referenced boxes.
The boxes are plastic wrapped and packaged for
freighting. The entire process is completed at
our studio in Pretoria.

The mosaic is supplied
paper faced, xed to paper
with a water-soluble glue. If
needed a breglass mesh
backing is added. The
mosaic comes cut into
interlocking puzzle type
pieces. Each piece is
numbered and referenced
on the back side with a
dimensioned reference
map included in every box.
Usually it is best to lay out
the mosaic dry before the
installation to check how
the pieces interlock. Do this
on a clean, dry surface and
carefully re-pack the
mosaic afterwards.
The surface where the
mosaic is to be installed
must be smoothly
plastered. The mosaic will
take the shape of the
surface.
We recommend using a
grey cementitious tile
adhesive mixed only with a
cement bonding liquid
when xing a mosaic to a
concrete pool.
Spread the adhesive onto
the surface where the
mosaic is to be installed.
Comb the adhesive with a
notched trowel to achieve
an even adhesive bed.
After removing the paper
oat the mosaic using a
trowel oat and some water
until all the tiles are level.
Using a blade or small tool
adjust the spacing between
the tiles so that the joint
lines are even throughout.
Straighten any lines that
distorted during oating.
Allow the adhesive to dry
for 48 hours without being
disturbed in any way.

SURFACE
PREPARATION
The surface must be clean
and free of dirt, grease,
etc. We recommend
painting cement surfaces
with a cement primer as it
greatly improves the
adhesion.
Support the mosaic sheet
on a masonite board.
Spread a thin layer of
adhesive onto the back side
of the mosaic. If the mosaic
has a mesh backing make
sure the adhesive presses
through the mosaic mesh.
Lay the mosaic sheet into
the wet tile adhesive. Lay
subsequent pieces the
same way.
Once the adhesive is dry it s
impossible to oat the
mosaic and correct any
gaps or distorted lines.
Clean the mosaic surface
from any cement .
Grout the mosaic with grey
cementitious grout mixed
only with cementitious
bonding liquid or epoxy
grout.
