community and we are thankful to
the Adam family and members of

Brillance in the Lone Star State
A great challenge awaits competitors in the 39th Junior PGA Championship
O
pened in 2005 and designed
by world-class golf course
architect Robert Trent
Jones Jr., Miramont Country
Club is a true Texas gem.
Located in Bryan, about 90
minutes from Houston, Miramont is
regarded as one of the elite private
facilities in Texas. Currently, it holds
the 13th spot in the Golf Digest “BestIn-State Rankings” for Texas and
was a Golfweek “Top 100 Residential
Course” in 2010. Yet, Miramont’s aura
goes well beyond its awards.
Holding true to his philosophy of
incorporating golf into the character
of the site, Jones was able to transform a plot of rolling, central Texas
land into a challenging and stunning
layout. A par 71 playing 7,174 yards
from the back tees, Miramont offers
plenty of means to make good scores
with numerous hole and tee placements. Like many of Jones’s designs,
there are numerous risk/reward
opportunities that could provide a
much-needed birdie or a painful double bogey.
Take the dramatic eighth hole,
for instance. This par 4 is a classic,
bold design that will undoubtedly
tempt the field in the 39th Junior
PGA Championship to take a chance
at a great reward. Measuring only
325 yards, the hole features a marshy
area that runs along the left side of
the fairway, providing plenty of challenges for the risk-takers. Those who
choose to take a more conservative
route deal with narrow fairway landing areas and treacherous bunkers.
The eighth requires skillful execution
and will prove to be a hole filled with
drama throughout the Championship.
The ninth is a long par 4,
measuring 490 yards from the back
tees. It’s built for bold decision
making because while the landing
area is generous, bunkers and the
winding creek from the eighth hole
come into play if a tee shot is wayward, making par a tough score.
However, with a second shot into a
receptive green, there will be opportunities for eagles and birdies.
Although eight and nine are two
of the highlights, each hole at Miramont offers unique challenges that
will surely test the competitors.
As host to the 2014 and 2015
Junior PGA Championship, Miramont
Country Club will surely be a
memorable venue for one of the
premier events in junior golf.
Located in Bryan,
about 90 minutes
from Houston,
Miramont is regarded
as one of the elite
private facilities in
Texas.

Last-hole heroics lift McDaniel, Lee to Junior PGA titles
B
oth Tyler McDaniel of Manchester, Ky., and Amy Lee of Brea,
Calif., captured titles in thrilling
fashion at the 38th Junior PGA
Championship presented by Under
Armour and Hotel Fitness.
McDaniel and Lee each made
Championship-clinching putts on the
72nd hole at Trump National Golf
Club-Washington, D.C., to capture the
Jack Nicklaus Trophy in the boys’
division and the Patty Berg
Trophy in the girls’ division,
respectively.
McDaniel shot 2-under-par
69 in the final round for a
10-under-par 274 total to win by
one stroke over Sam Burns of
Shreveport, La.
Lee, who was three shots
back with three holes to play
in the final round, made a dramatic 15-foot par putt on the

18th hole to shoot 69 and win by a single stroke. Abbey Carlson of Lake Mary,
Fla., the 54-hole co-leader, finished
second at 280.
McDaniel, who finished eighth in the
2012 Junior PGA Championship, was
overwhelmed by the victory.
“This means a lot to me after not
quite getting the job done last year in
this event,” said McDaniel. “This is my
first big-time, national win and it feels
so good right now.”
Lee, who tied the female competitive course record with 67
in the third round to put herself
in position to win, was equally
thrilled with the victory.
“I’m excited and happy right
now,” said Lee. “This is the biggest accomplishment I have had
yet in golf and I feel honored
to win this Championship. I’m a
fighter and I knew I could do it.”

Junior PGA Champions
> > > THE HISTORY OF THE JUNIOR PGA CHAMPIONSHIP
Showcasing Tomorrow’s Stars
One of golf’s major championships for juniors, the Junior PGA Championship
is where the best in the world get their start.
2001 PGA Champion David Toms won the Junior PGA Championship in 1984.
B
eginning in 1976 at Walt
Disney World Resort in
Orlando, Fla., the Junior PGA
Championship has been a
popular stop on the national junior
circuit for many of today’s PGA and
LPGA touring professionals.
The Junior PGA Championship
moved to Callaway Gardens in
Georgia in 1978, and two years later
was contested at PGA National Resort
in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., which
would eventually host 19
Championships over the next two
decades.
The Championship also visited
Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis,
Mo., in 1988 and Pinehurst (N.C.)
Lexi Thompson, this year’s Kraft Nabisco Champion on the LPGA
Tour, won the Junior PGA Championship twice.
With his win at the 2008 Masters,
Trevor Immelman became just the
second boys’ division champion
to also win a major championship.
Resort & Country Club in 1993.
Among the great players and
achievements in the Junior PGA
Championship are:
• In 1990, Vicki Goetze of Hull,
Ga., became the first participant to
win three Junior PGA Championships
(1987, ‘89, ‘90).
• In 2002, former Junior PGA
Champion Ty Tryon of Orlando, Fla.,
became the youngest player (age
17) to earn a PGA Tour fully exempt
playing card.
• In 2005, former Junior PGA
Champion Sean O’Hair (1998) and former PGA Junior Series winner (1996)
became the first ever to achieve PGA
Tour Rookie of the Year honors. There
have been four LPGA Rookie of the
Year honors to come from the Junior
PGA Girls Champion or runner-up
positions: 1985, Penny Hammel (1978
Champion); 1991, Brandi Burton (1988
Champion); 2000, Dorothy Delasin
(1998 runner-up); and 2002, Beth
Bauer (1997 Champion).
• David Toms, who won the 1984
Junior PGA Championship, also captured the 2001 PGA Championship
at The Atlanta Athletic Club in
Duluth, Ga.
• Also, with her victory at the 2008
U.S. Women’s Open, In-Bee Park of
Henderson, Nev., and South Korea,
became the third girls’ division winner
of the Junior PGA Championship to
also earn a major championship. Park
joined a select group that included
Cristie Kerr of Scottsdale, Ariz., winner
of the 1995 Junior PGA Championship
and the 2007 U.S. Women’s Open;
and Grace Park of Scottsdale, winner
of the 1996 Junior PGA Championship
and the 2004 Kraft Nabisco Championship.
• In 2007, 12-year-old Lexi
Thompson of Coral Springs, Fla.,
became the youngest champion in the
history of the storied Championship.
• With his win at the 2008
Masters, Trevor Immelman became
just the second boys’ division
champion to also win a major
championship. In addition, Immelman
(1996, from South Africa) became the
second to achieve PGA Tour Rookie
of the Year honors.
• Thompson captured her second
Junior PGA Championship, cruising to
a 12-stroke triumph, one stroke off the
all-time record, set by Debbie Hall in
1977. The 14-year-old Thompson, who

2012 Junior Ryder Cup
Summary
P
owered by a strong singles
performance, the United States
captured its third consecutive
Junior Ryder Cup, 14 1/2 – 9 1/2, at
Olympia Fields Country Club in suburban Chicago. The U.S. Team, which
opened its final session with a twopoint advantage, won seven of the 12
singles matches and halved another.
The United States battled to a 7-5
lead after the first day of foursomes
and mixed four-balls, then sprinted
out in singles on the second and final
day by winning four of its first five
matches.
U.S. Captain and PGA Past President Roger Warren was overwhelmed
by the entire experience of serving as
the United States Captain and came
away impressed with the performance
of both teams.
“We are really fortunate to have
won, because these teams are so
evenly matched and each have such
a wealth of talent,” said Warren. “We
came because we wanted to compete and win. But in the end it was
all about friendships and goodwill
between the teams that made this a
truly special experience.”
U.S. players Karen Chung, Esther
Lee and Casie Cathrea won all three
of their matches.
“It’s exciting to know that I was
able to close out my first Junior
Ryder Cup with three points and
winning all three matches,” said
Cathrea. “This whole experience has
been incredible.”
Junior Ryder Cup
An international
showcase of golf’s
next generation
O
rigins of the Junior Ryder Cup
can be traced back to Sept.
20, 1995, when a series of
exhibition matches were
conducted between Central New York
PGA Section-area juniors and 12 leading
European junior players. The Europeans,
age 15 and younger, included Sergio
Garcia. They toured three New York
courses and dominated all the matches.
No results were published. The inaugural
Junior Ryder Cup was contested prior
to the 1997 Ryder Cup in Sotogrande,
Spain. The U.S. won, 7-5. In 1999, Europe
returned to face the U.S. juniors, and
dominated in the Boston area.
This marked the first of three straight
outright Junior Ryder Cup victories for
the Europeans. In 2006, however, the
United States team was able to halve
the Junior Ryder Cup, 6-6, when the
matches were contested in Newport,
Wales.
In 2012, the United States captured
its third consecutive victory in the biennial event, at historic Olympia Fields (Ill.)
Country Club. In 2008, the U.S. won in
dominant fashion, 22-2, at The Club at
Olde Stone in Bowling Green, Ky., and
the Americans prevailed in 2010 after a
hard-fought match at Gleneagles Resort
in Scotland.

U.S. Captain: Brian Whitcomb,
PGA Past President (2007-08)
T
he 2014 Junior Ryder Cup
will feature a 12-player United
States team that will compete
against Europe at Blairgowrie
Golf Club Perthshire, Scotland.
The U.S. team, which is seeking its
fourth consecutive victory, will consist of six boys and six girls who are
United States citizens and are in the
high school graduating class of 2015,
or younger.
Those earning an exemption to
compete at Blairgowrie Golf Club include: the top two boys’ and top two
girls’ finishers from the 39th Junior
PGA Championship; the 2014 U.S.
Junior Amateur Champion; and the
2014 U.S. Girls’ Junior Champion. If
any of these individuals has graduated
from high school and is therefore not
eligible to participate, that exemption
will become a captains’ pick.
In addition, the leading boy and
girl in the 2014 Junior Ryder Cup final
point standings, which will be determined following the 39th Junior PGA
Championship on Aug. 1, will earn an
automatic berth on the team.

selected to complete the team will be
selected by PGA Past President and

Brian Whitcomb, and announced on
Aug. 12.
The 2014 Junior Ryder Cup will
continue to present the expanded
Ryder Cup format of foursomes,
mixed four-ball and singles competition. The matches will mark the ninth
formal connection between the PGA
of America and Ryder Cup Ltd., which
biennially stage the Ryder Cup.
A “friendship match” between the
United States and European Junior
Ryder Cup Teams will be staged on
Sept. 24, at Gleneagles in Perthshire,
Scotland, host site of the 40th Ryder
Cup.
