Billy Mitchell, noted amateur player from
Roswell, won his first Yamaha Georgia Senior Open contested at the Chattahoochee
Golf Course in Gainesville. Mitchell fired a
second round of four-under par 68 for a
two-day total of 7-under par 137 and defeated mini-tour professional John L. Smith
from Statesboro in a playoff.
Mitchell started the day tied for fourth
place after a first round of three-under par
69, and got off to a torrid start by making
birdies on five of his first ten holes to get
to 8-under for the championship and a
three shot lead. A double bogey on the 13th
hole brought him back to 6-under and his
lead was down to one stroke. He then
proceeded to bounce back with a birdie the
par four 14th hole and carded four straight
pars to finish at 7-under. He then waited
for the final groups to finish their rounds.
Smith, who caddies on the PGA Tour, was
one of the first round co-leaders, and shot
a final round of 3-under par 69 to equal
Mitchell in the clubhouse. The duo returned to the 18th hole and a routine twoputt par was all Mitchell needed to defeat
Smith who was unable to get up and
down. For his efforts, Smith claimed the
Low Professional honors and a check for
$2,200.

Mitchell also took home Low Amateur
honors for the second straight year.
Defending champion, PGA Life Member
James Mason from Dillard, finished tied in
9th place at 3-under par 141. Three-time
past champion Craig Stevens from Brookstone Golf & Country Club in Acworth
finished alone in third place at 6-under par
138. Rounding out the top five were PGA
head professional Stephen Keppler at Marietta Country Club and noted amateur Don
Marsh of Johns Creek who both finished at
5-under par 139.
Introduced for the first time in this championship was a Super Seniors Division, with
amateur Dave Nichols of Roswell taking
home first place with an even par score of
144 for the championship.

Albertson Elected Georgia PGA President
Brian Albertson, PGA Head Professional at
Coosa Country Club in Rome was elected the
24th president of the Georgia Section, PGA of
America on Monday, March 21, 2016 at the
Georgia PGA Annual Meeting held at the Alpharetta Marriott on Windward Parkway.
Albertson, a native of Alpharetta, is a graduate
of Madison County High School and the University of Georgia in 1991. He furthered his
education by earning his MBA degree in 2011
from Shorter University. He was elected to
PGA membership in 1994. He has been head
professional at Coosa Country Club since
December of 1998. His wife Kristin and their
two children reside in Rome.
Known as “B.A.”, to his many friends and
members of Coosa Country Club, Albertson
had been a long time contributor to the
game. He has served two separate terms as
the president of the Georgia PGA Foundation
(formerly the Georgia Junior Golf Foundation), and has hosted a tournament for the
American Junior Golf Association for many
years. He is the founder of the Coosa Junior
Golf Academy in conjunction with Darlington
School and works tirelessly teaching and promoting the game.
Albertson was mentored under the watchful
eye of PGA of America and Georgia Golf Hall
of Fame member Ed Hoard, who was in expert in the rules of golf and a past president of
the Georgia PGA. The affable die-hard Bulldog fan worked at Athens Country Club for
12 years while in school and after graduation
before accepting his new position at Coosa
Country Club.
Brandon Stooksbury, PGA Director of Instruction at the Idle Hour Club in Macon was
elected as Secretary of the Georgia Section. Stooksbury has been on the board of
directors for the last two years and is the cochairman of the education committee. He is a
native of Tennessee and is a best-selling author of his book The Wedge Book published in
2015. He resides in Macon with wife Lara and
their young daughter Ainsley and another
child expected in the fall of 2016.
John Godwin, PGA Professional at US Kids
Golf based in Norcross was elected as the
next Vice President of the Georgia Section. Godwin has been on the executive committee for the past two years as the Secretary. Godwin will also serve as the President
of the Georgia PGA Foundation. Godwin a
renowned expert in junior golf was recognized in 2005 as the recipient of the PGA of
America Junior Golf Leader Award. He resides on his farm in Pine Mountain, GA.
Mark Mongell, PGA Director of Golf at Cherokee Town & Country Club in Sandy Springs,
moves into the honorary president position. Mongell has served on the executive
committee for the past six years, and was
recognized as the Georgia PGA Professional
of the Year in 2015. He has also been recognized as an expert in retailing. Mongell was
the recipient of the 2010 PGA of America
Merchandiser of the Year Award (Private Category) for his advancements in merchandising
and promotion.
Additionally, two At-Large Directors were
elected to the board of directors. Jeff Dunovant, PGA Director of Instruction at The
First Tee at East Lake in Atlanta and Shawn
Koch, PGA Director of Instruction at Country
Club of the South in Johns Creek. Both will
serve a three-year term. The board of directors filled the final year Stooksbury’s term
with Rashad Wilson, PGA Assistant Professional from Reynolds Lake Oconee in Greensboro.
The Club Car Senior-Junior Championship presented by PGA
Tour has returned to our Section tournament schedule this
year! We’ll be heading to Ansley Golf Club’s Downtown
Course on Monday, May 2nd for a 10:30 a.m. shotgun start.
Teams shall consist of one player age 50+ and one player 49 or
younger as of May 2, 2016. It is open to Georgia PGA Members (except Class F, IN and A-3's) and registered apprentices
in good standing with the Georgia PGA. Click here for a list

2016 Yamaha Atlanta Open & Pro-Am
This year’s Yamaha Atlanta Open presented by Bollé/Bushnell
and supported by Chase54/Camelbak will be held at St. Ives
Country Club in Duluth, GA on Monday and Tuesday, June 1314, 2016.
There are no qualifiers for the Yamaha Atlanta Open, entries
will be taken on a first-come, first-serve basis and all registrants
must meet the eligibility requirements.
Now in its third year, the Rivermont Championship presented
by Ste. Michelle Wine Estates will be held at Rivermont Golf &
Country Club on Monday, May 9, 2016. Both rounds will be
shotgun starts in this 36-hole event. The entry fee is $175.

The 2016 Club Car Pro-Assistant Championship presented by
Mobile Pro Shop/Under Armour will be held at The Georgia
Club in Stratham, GA on Tuesday, May 31st. Be sure to register your team by the deadline of Friday, May 27th at 10A.M.
This is a 27-hole four-ball stroke play event open to Georgia
PGA Head Golf Professionals and Directors of Golf (classes
MP, A-1, A-2, A-4, A-7, A-13, and A-14) and the assistant professional at their facility (classes A-6, A-8 or registered apprentice). All team members must be from the same club and in
good standing with the Georgia PGA. An A-6, A-8 or registered apprentice may only be on one team.

Drive, Chip & Putt Instruction Playbook
Play in the Pediatric Brain Tumor
Foundation Charity Pro-Am
Georgia PGA Professionals are
still needed to play in the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation
Charity Pro-Am on Tuesday,
May 3rd at the Chateau Elan
Golf Club. There is a $110 appearance fee, which will be paid
to each participating Georgia PGA
golf professional. The tournament
committee will assign a professional to each amateur team, unless a professional brings his or
her own team to play with.
The Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation will once again benefit
from this golf tournament in
which 100% of the proceeds go
directly towards the battle of this
disease. This is the nineteenth
year that the Georgia PGA will be
involved with this tournament.
Format: Stroke play competition
for Professionals with a professional purse for the low three
scores on each course.
The breakdown will be as follows:
1. $500
2. $250
3. $125
Scramble format for Amateurs.
Tournament rules will be provided on the day of the event.

The Georgia PGA Junior Championship being held at Jennings Mill Country Club in Watkinsville, GA is coming
up quick on June 6-7. The Boys and
Girls Overall champion will earn a
spot into the 41st Junior PGA Championship sponsored by Under Armour
and Genesis Networks on August 912, 2016 at Wannamoisett Country

The Good, the Bad & the Ugly
The title of this article, borrowed from the 1966 epic western film starring Clint Eastwood, refers to three situations that occurred during
the 2016 Masters Tournament. The Good refers to the hole-in-one by Louis Oosthuizen during the final round. The Bad refers to a twostroke penalty incurred by Zach Johnson during the second round. The Ugly refers to Billy Horschel’s ball being moved by the wind during
the third round.
The Good: The following four photographs (courtesy of CBS Sports) illustrate what happened to the balls of Louis Oosthuizen and J.B.
Holmes on the 16th green during the final round. The first photograph shows J.B. Holmes’ ball at rest within a couple of feet from the hole as
Oosthuizen’s ball is curving down the slope towards the hole. The second photograph shows the position of the two balls just after
Oosthuizen’s ball collided with Holmes’ ball. The third photograph shows Oosthuizen’s ball disappearing into the hole with Holmes’ ball
rolling just past the hole, and the fourth photograph shows Holmes’ ball at rest below the hole.
Rule 19-5 [Ball in Motion Deflected or Stopped by Another Ball] states, “If a player’s ball in motion after a stroke is deflected … by a ball in play
and at rest, the player must play his ball as it lies.” Thus, Oosthuizen scored a hole-in-one because his deflected ball ended up in the hole. As
for Holmes, Rule 18-5 [Ball at Rest Moved by Another Ball] states, “If a ball in play and at rest is moved by another ball in motion after a stroke,
the moved ball must be replaced.” Thus, Holmes had to replace his ball on the spot where it originally came to rest; he then putted it into the
hole for a birdie.
The Bad: 2007 Masters champion, Zach Johnson, missed the cut by one stroke due to a two-stroke penalty that
he incurred during the second round. With his ball resting in Rae’s Creek short of the 13 th green, Johnson’s
wedge barely touched the water as he was making his backswing. Rule 13-4 [Ball in Hazard; Prohibited Actions]
states, in part, “… before making a stroke at a ball that is in a hazard (whether a bunker or a water hazard) … the
player must not … [t]ouch the ground in a hazard or water in the water hazard with his hand or a club ….” The
penalty for a breach of this Rule in stroke play is two strokes.
When applying this Rule, it is important to remember that the backswing is not part of the stroke. The
Definition of “Stroke” states, in part, “A stroke is the forward movement of the club made with the intention of
striking at and moving the ball ….” [Emphasis added]
The Ugly: During the third round, Billy Horschel cleared the pond fronting the green on the par-5 15th hole with
his second shot, ending up left of the green. His subsequent chip came to rest about 13 feet from the hole.
After he marked, lifted and replaced his ball, and while surveying his putt for a birdie, a gust of wind caused the
ball to start rolling off the green and into the water hazard. As shown in the adjacent photograph courtesy of
CBS Sports, Horschel watched in amazement as his ball rolled by and must have been thinking that the “Golf
Gods” owed him one for such cruel and unusual punishment.
According to Rule 18-1 [Ball at Rest Moved by Outside Agency], if a ball at rest is moved by an outside agency,
there is no penalty and the ball must be replaced. Unfortunately, for Horschel, wind is not an outside agency!
See Decision 18-1/12 [Ball Replaced and at Rest Is Thereafter Moved by Wind] which indicates that a ball moved
by wind must be played from its new position. With his ball now in the water hazard, Horschel used one of the
options available under Rule 26-1 [Relief for Ball in Water Hazard], namely playing a ball as nearly as possible at
the spot from which the original ball was last played, i.e., chipping again from left of the green. He chipped close to the hole and, one putt
later, walked off the green with a bogey 6 when, just a few minutes before, he was looking to make birdie on the hole!
