PRESIDENT . . . . . . . . . . . . .
VICE PRESIDENT . . . . . . . .
SECRETARY . . . . . . . . . . . .
TREASURER . . . . . . . . . . . .
Hello everyone! A lot of great events have taken place in the past several weeks,
affecting several aspects of Club membership.
We took back our trophy for Best Club Display at the AutoRama car show. This
year’s event was spectacular as always, and the Club display looked great, showcased 6 immaculately prepared cars, and an energetic group of volunteers to
work the display and chat with show attendees. We even unveiled a new feature
this year, which was a great addition to our overall display.
Our first Tech Session was a tremendous success. The “tech” part involved replacing the clutch, flywheel, transmission fluid, cat-back exhaust, and various
smaller odds and ends on a member’s beautiful 1984 300ZX Anniversary Edition.
But the feeling of teamwork and having the opportunity to dirty one’s hands and
learn something…that was when I realized that Tech Sessions are officially back.
I can’t wait for the next one.
Our first Texas Tour of the year was a blast. Our trusty Secretary led a large
and varied Nissan caravan on fun, twisty roads on the way to Tioga, TX on a
beautiful Saturday morning. Ostensibly our goal was to eat a delicious barbecue
lunch at Clark’s, but as anyone who’s done a Texas Tour will tell you, it’s all about
the drive.

Matt’s car. This is a 1984 Nissan 300ZX. It is a rare
50th Anniversary Edition. Turbocharged 6 cylinder, 2
seats, classic 80s bodystyle. Plan for the day was to
replace Matt’s original clutch, flywheel, and cat-back
exhaust. He also had a bag full of smaller parts to replace as the opportunities arose.
Replacing a clutch means removing the transmission
first. Doing this requires removal of the driveshaft. It
was kinda tough removing the four bolts that attach
it to the differential input, but luckily we had enough tools to get the job done. With 4 people under the
car, removing the driveshaft was much easier than it could have been.
It was break time shortly after getting to this point. Removing
the transmission requires removal of the exhaust, driveshaft,
and partial disassembly of the car’s interior. My mad skillz with
car audio came in handy for taking apart the console so that
we could drop the entire transmission assembly, including the
shifter. That red thing is a transmission jack. Ed is all too familiar
with pulling transmissions out of Z cars, hence the specialized
jack. We drained the old transmission oil and filled it with a full
dose of Royal Purple before reassembly.
Paydirt. The round pie pan shaped thing is the pressure plate. It’s
what provides the clamping force when you let your clutch in, and allows torque to be transferred from the engine to the driveshaft. There
was quite a bit of oil inside the transmission bellhousing. Rear main
seal leak. We think we got it fixed. These parts all went back on. Left to
right: catalytic converter, downpipe, and heatshield. The heatshield
attaches to the underbody above the cat. Catalytic converters get extremely hot by design, hence the secondary heat shield.
The fourth wheel is still on the
car. One of the lugs was stuck
on. We broke tools and spent 20 minutes and still couldn’t budge that 4th wheel. That pile of garbage
is the original cat-back exhaust. That rusty bucket is the old muffler. When we got under the car we
discovered it wasn’t even attached to the exhaust, the joint had been totally rusted through. It took a
cutoff wheel and a saw to get this stuff off. Good thing Matt brought a new cat-back exhaust with him!
Amazingly, this was really the only rusty part of the car’s underbody. Getting the car this high was
necessary to have room to pull the transmission assembly backward without fouling on the shifter. Got
pretty familiar with the underside of this car, we were there for 10 hours.
New clutch parts. The small yellow box was for the new throwout bearing. New pressure plate. New
flywheel next to the new catback exhaust w/polished muffler. Car is mad loud but don’t worry it wasn’t
ricer-ish. The turbo actually helps quiet the exhaust a lot, but the car doesn’t have a separate resonator
so it’s a bit loud. Matt couldn’t be aggressive with it b/c the new clutch needs a couple hundred miles
of break-in. Looking forward to hearing the car get deep in the rpms. The sun was long gone by the time
we actually finished, but you could say this was the beginning of the end. A shame such a nicely painted
part will never see the light of day again.
