HIC 2016
12th International Conference on Hydroinformatics
“Smart Water for the Future”
Welcome Message
“Smart Water for the Future”
It is our great pleasure to invite you to 12th International Conference on Hydroinformatics (HIC 2016)
being held at Songdo ConvensiA in Incheon, Korea, from 21 August (SUN) to 26 August (FRI), 2016.
The conference has been the main gathering of Hydroinformatics communities in IAHR, IAHS
and IWA. As the utilization of ICT (Information and Communication Technology) for the efficiency
of water management has been issued highly for the last two decades, the Hydroinformatics
conference became a very popular event among hydrologist, water scientists, and engineers
working in emerging areas of water management.
The main theme of the conference is “Smart Water for the Future” focusing the fast evolving smart
instruments and techniques for water management. We expect many preeminent presentations
followed by in depth discussion, so that the participants will be able to catch the latest trend of
smart technologies and advanced aspects of Hydroinformatics.
We cordially welcome you all to this recognized international conference of HIC 2016, and hope
you will have great time in Korea.

Gyeongin Ara Waterway
A technical tour to Lake Sihwa Tidal Power Plant and the Gyeongin Ara Waterway is scheduled on 26 August
(FRI), 2016, 09:00-18:20. Lake Sihwa Tidal Power Plant is the world’s largest tidal power installation that uses the
difference in water levels between the sea and Lake Sihwa. Operated by K-water, the Power Plant has a total
power output capacity of 254 MW. The Power Plant is expected to reduce both the annual CO2 emission and oil
consumption of South Korea. The Gyeongin Ara Waterway is the first eco-friendly inland waterway that starts
at the Han River and meets the Yellow sea around Incheon airport. The waterway itself is 18 kilometers-long, 80
meters-wide, and 6.3 meters-deep. Along the waterway, park areas with 8 different landscapes are extended
for 15.6 kilometers. Tour fee is USD 60, including lunch.

Using a unique style of architecture, Tri-bowl has the shape of three bowls put
together. The structure looks like a cone hat put upside down and is the world’s
first structure to be built in an inverted-shell structure in which the breadth widens
from bottom to top. Tri-bowl stands for “sky(airport),” “ocean(port)” and “land(metro
transportation).” It also symbolizes Incheon Free Economic Zone comprised of the
international business districts of Cheongna(leisure), Yeongjong(distribution) and
Songdo(business). Tri-bowl is also a space for performances and exhibitions that
can be viewed after making reservations. In 2010, Tri-bowl received the Architecture
Culture Grand Prize of the Year at the Korean Architecture Awards. The night view at
the structure is especially beautiful, luring many visitors.

can see the city’s mudflats, the magnificent bridge and the Yellow Sea sunset all in
one glance. Three containers stand on degrees of 10, 30, and 50, respectively, to face
the Yellow Sea, Incheon Bridge and skies to the west. In 2010, Ocean Scope received
the Red Dot Design Grand Award for Buildings and Structures. The image of Incheon
Bridge, the longest in Korea, is beautiful as it vividly changes with 3D LED lighting
after sunset.
