2012 Football Outlook
What a difference a year makes.
When the Ragin’ Cajuns football team
opened up preseason camp in August
of 2011, there were many questions that
needed to be answered.
After all, Mark Hudspeth had taken over
as head coach in late December 2010 after
UL had posted a 3-9 record. The new coach
had little time to put together a staff, get
ready for national signing day and quickly
run spring practice.
But those questions were eventually
answered as Hudspeth guided the Cajuns
to a memorable campaign, including a 9-4
record, a third place finish in the Sun Belt and
the school’s first bowl bid in 41 years.
By the time that Brett Baer’s 50-yard field
goal snuck inside the left uprights as time expired to give UL a 32-30 win over San Diego
State in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl,
the Cajun Nation had come out of its hibernation and Hudspeth had clearly positioned
the UL football program among the leaders
of the Sun Belt Conference.
The big question heading into the 2012
season for Hudspeth is what the Cajuns can
do for an encore?
The Cajuns return 13 starters and 49
lettermen from the squad that “painted the
quarter red” last December, but more importantly, they return with a year in the system
and one more year of experience. They head
into the year knowing what is expected and
ready to go after the one goal that eluded
them last season. . . a Sun Belt title.
Senior Blaine Gautier was named the Louisiana
Offensive Player of the Year after setting school
records for yards passing (2,958), touchdowns
(23) and total offense (3,444) in 2011.
2
U n i v e r s i t y O F LOUI S IANA Add to the mix the return to the field of 19
players who redshirted last season and the
addition of another strong recruiting class,
and the 2012 Ragin’ Cajuns should feature a
deeper and more talented playing rotation.
The strength of the Cajuns will come on
offense where nine starters from the squad
that compiled more than 5,000 yards of
total offense, including the 2011 Louisiana
Offensive Player of the Year (Blaine Gautier),
the reigning Sun Belt Freshman of the Year
(Alonzo Harris), four offensive line starters
and receivers who combined to catch almost
200 passes for 2,600 yards.
The biggest loss for the offense is at tight
end where Ladarius Green, a first team AllSun Belt pick after catching 51 passes for 606
yards and eight touchdowns, has headed to
the NFL after earning his degree.
Although the defense will feature seven
new starters this fall, the overall depth and
athleticism of the unit has improved, leaving
the coaching staff confident coming out of
spring drills. Thirteen players are back from
the two-deep last season, including nine of
the 11 reserves, and when you factor in the
abilities of the freshmen from two strong
recruiting classes, the Cajuns have the ability
to improve again defensively this fall.
That is not to say that there aren’t areas of
concern, but the staff believes that the squad
will continue to develop and grow together
as the season progresses and the young
players gain additional playing experience.
The defense that takes the field on Dec. 1
at Florida Atlantic should have a different
look from the one that starts the year three
months earlier as the inexperienced freshmen and sophomores will have had the time
to grow up on the field.
The Ragin’ Cajuns will benefit in a number
of ways from the improved depth defensively. By rotating more players early in the
game, the coaching staff can keep the lineup
fresher and allow the staff to put its best 11
on the field during crunch time.
Special teams were a strength in 2011
and they should be even stronger this year
as every specialist returns.
Gautier To Lead Talented QB Group
The offense is centered around quarterback play and UL is in great hands. Senior
Blaine Gautier returns after a record-setting
season in 2011 while sophomore Terrance
Broadway returns after sitting out 2011 after
his transfer from Houston. The duo gives
the Cajuns a pair of quarterbacks to run the
high-octane attack.
Also on the roster are fifth-year senior
Brady Thomas and junior Riley Saunders,
along with incoming freshmen Brooks Haack

Sophomore Alonzo Harris rushed for 700 yards
and eight touchdowns in 2011, earning him Sun
Belt Freshman of the Year honors.
and Jalen Nixon, giving UL a deep and talented quarterback unit.
It took Gautier a little while to settle in as
the starting quarterback last fall, but once
he did, the offense took off. A starter 11 of
the 13 games, he attempted a total of just
nine passes in three of the first six contests.
Once settled in, Gautier averaged 306.0 yards
passing with 17 touchdowns in the last seven
games, including 470 yards and three scores
in the New Orleans Bowl win.
Gautier ended the year setting UL singleseason records for passing yards (2,958),
touchdowns (23), completion percentage
(.628), passing efficiency (153.60), total offense (3,444) and touchdowns responsible
for (26). He led the Sun Belt and ranked 16th
nationally in passing efficiency, throwing just
six interceptions in 344 pass attempts, and
became the only thrower in school history
to have more than one 400-yard game (419
vs. WKU, 470 vs. SDSU).
Broadway will be more than the quarterback in waiting this fall with Hudspeth
insisting that the sophomore will get snaps
in every game. He was rated as the fifth-best
dual threat quarterback in the nation as a
high school senior and made his on-field
debut at UL during the annual Red & White
Spring game, going 10-for-18 for 184 yards
and two scores in leading the White team to
a victory.
Improved Running Game A 2012 Goal
After UL ranked 88th in the country last
fall in rushing with an average of 125.2 yards
per game, Hudspeth made improving the
productivity of the running game a focal
point during spring drills. A trio of backs
– sophomore Alonzo Harris and redshirt
2012 Football
2012 FootbALL ouTLOOK
freshmen Torrey Pierce and Montrel Carter –
emerged from spring practice as the leading
candidates to share the playing time.
When you factor in redshirt freshman
Effrem Reed, who was unable to take part
in contact during spring practice because
of a shoulder injury, the Ragin’ Cajuns will
field one of the youngest backfields in the
country.
Despite the youth of the group, Hudspeth did not hesitate in moving Qyendarius
Griffin, who gained 210 yards with three
touchdowns last year to be the second most
productive running back, to linebacker.
Harris is the veteran of the backfield,
owning the best size at 6-1, 205 pounds. He
earned Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the
Year honors last fall after rushing 163 times
for 700 yards and eight touchdowns. He
rushed 33 times for a career-high 189 yards
and two touchdowns in the win at Middle
Tennessee, the third-highest total ever by a
UL true-freshman.
Carter checks in at 5-11, 180-pounds and
possesses a combination of running and
receiving skills that can help the Cajuns. He
was an all-state selection as a high school
senior after rushing for 1,529 yards and 15
touchdowns at Cecilia (La.) High.
Pierce showed off his running skills during the spring game, rushing for a game-high
56 yards on nine carries (6.2 ypc). The 5-9,
180-pound back averaged 12.2 yards per
carry during his high school career, playing
on a John Curtis High team that went 49-4
and won two state titles during his tenure.
Reed (5-8, 180 pounds) is the third of the
2011 redshirts in the mix this fall. He gained
1,926 yards and scored 32 touchdowns as a
high school senior to earn first team all-state
honors.
Playing in a young and relatively inexperienced backfield, senior Yobes Walker has
the experience that could help him work his
way into the rotation. The second leading
rusher on the squad in 2010 with 412 yards
on 116 carries, he struggled to find a place
for himself in the spread offense last year,
playing in seven games and carrying seven
times for 16 yards.
Other potential candidates in the backfield include sophomore Marcus Jackson and
redshirt freshman Joey Chapman.
Quantity & Quality At Receiver
The Cajuns couldn’t be in any better position at receiver, where not only do all three
starters from 2011 return, but they have
three other receivers who will push hard to
get on the field.
Seniors Javone Lawson and Harry Peoples
2012 Football
and junior Darryl Surgent each return as
starters after combining to make 149 catches
for 2,216 yards and 15 touchdowns last year,
making them the top returning trio in the
Sun Belt this season.
The trio will be joined by juniors Brad
Brown and Devin Figaro and sophomores
Jamal Robinson and James Butler to form a
deep and talented unit.
Lawson earned first team All-Sun Belt
honors last year making 63 catches for 1,092
yards and eight touchdowns, ranking him
fourth on the UL season list for catches and
yards and fifth in touchdowns. He had five
100-yard games receiving. He ended the
year by averaging 6.0 catches and 101.4
yards over the last eight games, including a
career-high nine catches for 193 yards and
two scores in the New Orleans Bowl.
Peoples joined the Cajuns last year from
Holmes C.C. and immediately made an
impact, finishing second on the team with
58 catches and 697 yards receiving. He had
two games of 10 or more catches, including career highs for catches (12) and yards
(176) against Florida Atlantic. Like Lawson,
he finished the season playing at his best,
making four or more catches in five of the
last six games.
Surgent is the most experienced of the
group, having played regularly as a reserve in
each of his first two seasons. He led the team
with 18.5 yards per catch in 2011, hauling in
28 passes for 518 yards. He was steady all
season, making at least two receptions in 10
games, owning career bests of four catches
(vs. Troy) and 109 yards (vs. North Texas).
Brown will be a player to watch after making 75 catches for 810 yards in two seasons at
Northwestern State, earning honorable mention all-league mention both years. A former
high school teammate of UL quarterback Terrance Broadway, Brown has the breakaway
speed needed to make an impact.
Robinson gained valuable experience
as a reserve last year, finishing with seven
catches for 77 yards while seeing action in
10 contests.
At 6-4, 205 pounds, Robinson is the
largest of the receivers. He showed strong
development during spring drills, making
three catches for 55 yards in the spring game,
a sign that he could take on a larger role this
fall.
The size of Figaro, who checks in at 6-3,
205 pounds, complements the other receivers well, giving the Cajuns another goodsized target over the middle. He sat out 2011
after playing his first two seasons at Tulane,
where he made 23 catches for 302 yards and
a pair of scores. A sampling of his potential
www.ragincajuns.com
impact at UL came in the spring game when
he made a game-high five catches for 47
yards and a touchdown.
Butler, who caught 14 passes for 210
yards as a freshman in 2010, returns after
missing the 2011 season with a knee injury
and could quickly make a place for himself
in the rotation.
Freshmen Brandon Calhoun, Trey Carter
and Adam Savoie will also compete to break
into the deep and talented unit.
Tight End Is A Position In Transition
The one area on offense that was still undecided at the completion of spring practice
is at tight end where first team All-Sun Belt
choice Ladarius Green (51 catches, 606 yards,
8 TDs) has headed to the San Diego Chargers,
taking with him an array of offensive skills
that will be hard to replace.
The Cajuns will head into fall camp with
a trio of candidates at the spot — juniors Ian
Thompson and Jacob Maxwell and sophomore Larry Pettis — each of whom provide
different skills to the position.
Thompson may be the best all-around of
the three, owning the blocking and receiving
skills that would allow him to be on the field
for every down and situation. He played in
every game last year with one start, catching
10 passes for 99 yards.
Maxwell is the superior blocker of the
three, a skill that helped him to see action
in all 13 games last season.
Pettis is the most-skilled receiver of
the group. He caught two passes as a
Senior Javone Lawson caught 63 passes for
1,092 yards in 2011 to become only the fifth
1,000-yard receiver in school history.

teams players last fall (11 tackles), he has all
of the tools to be a big playmaker once he
adjusts to playing again on the defensive
side of the ball.
Gibson (45 tackles), a fifth-year player
who has already earned his degree, takes
over as rover after starting 11 games at inside linebacker last season. He missed the
final two games with a broken ankle, but
came back to have a good showing in spring
practice.
Burrowes, a transfer from Mississippi
Gulf Coast C.C., started spring practice as a
safety but quickly moved to linebacker and
thrived. He capped off a strong spring camp
by making four tackles in the spring game,
earning him the spot behind Gibson on the
two-deep.
Tovell, a redshirt freshman, will begin
preseason camp as the starter at the bandit
spot, a position earned through his hard
work during the off-season. He showed the
ability he had to make plays at the position
when he finished with a game-high six tackles in the spring game.
Johnson came on strong as a true-freshman, starting in four of the 12 games that he
played, finishing with 22 tackles and a pair of
quarterback sacks. He should work his way
into the mix again this fall.
After being used predominantly on special teams a year ago, Nash is another individual who stood out during spring practice
and earned a spot in the playing rotation.
Mosby joined the team in January after
playing at Arizona Western J.C. last year. The
former Kentucky signee was ranked the No.
4 linebacker in Arizona last year.
Senior Brett Baer was a second team All-Sun Belt
choice as both a punter and kicker in 2011.
2012 Football
Anyama led the special team units with 16
tackles last year and with a year in the Cajuns
system under his belt, could be ready to step
forward and get some playing time.
Two Starters Return In The Secondary
The key to the Cajun defense in 2011 was
the secondary, and with the departure of
two starters, the unit will need to continue
to work hard to regain the cohesiveness that
UL enjoyed last year.
Gone are safety Lionel Stokes, who was
fourth on the team with 76 tackles, and
cornerback Dwight Bentley, a third round
selection by the Detroit Lions in the NFL Draft
after making 71 tackles last year.
Senior cornerbacks Melvin White and
Jemarlous Moten are expected to anchor the
secondary this year. They each started every
game a year ago and are two of the top three
returning tacklers.
Moten, the team’s defensive newcomer of
the year in 2011, makes the move from safety
to cornerback after finishing second on the
team with 80 tackles last year and sharing the
team lead with three interceptions, returning
two for touchdowns.
White, an honorable mention All-Sun
Belt pick in 2011, was seventh on the team
with 64 tackles and third with 8.5 tackles-forloss.
Depth at cornerback is present as sophomore Sean Thomas, who made 13 tackles
last season, and redshirt freshman Jevante
Watson, are slated to fill out the rotation.
The Cajuns will have first-time starters at
both safety spots in 2012 with sophomore
Darius Barksdale, a transfer from Jacksonville
State, and senior Rodney Gillis, who made
nine tackles in 11 games last year, serving as
the leading candidates to claim the starting
spots.
Sophomore Trevence Patt and redshirt
freshman Dexter Aucoin are the leading
candidates to serve as the primary reserves
though more depth can come from the incoming class of recruits.
Cajuns Should Excel On Special Teams
Games are won and lost on special teams
and the 2011 season showed that the UL special teams were some of the best around.
That should not change in 2012 as every
specialist is back.
Leading the charge will be senior Brett
Baer, who earned second team All-Sun Belt
honors as both a punter and kicker last
year.
Baer, who is on a pace to end his career
as the most accurate kicker in NCAA history,
was 18-for-20 in field goal attempts, includwww.ragincajuns.com

ing a career-long 50-yard kick as time expired
that gave the Cajuns a 32-30 win in the New
Orleans Bowl. He set a school record for
points by a kicker with 100 and will begin
2012 having made 11 straight field goal attempts, three short of the UL school record.
As a punter, Baer averaged 40.3 yards on
79 kicks, having 27 kicks downed inside the
20 with just five touchbacks.
Waiting in the wings is sophomore Carlos
Alvarez, who is more than ready to take over
any of the kicking chores if needed. He came
on late in 2011 to handle kickoffs, owning an
impressive 63.2 average on 15 kicks.
Sophomore Hunter Stover returns after
missing the final five games of 2012 with a
knee injury. Before being hurt, he kicked off
47 times for a team-best 60.3 yard average.
Baer will have familiar surroundings this
year as longsnapper Matt Rosenbalm and
holder Brady Thomas both return, giving UL
some continuity that should help to keep the
special team’s efficiency high.
One byproduct of UL’s strong receiving
corps is a plethora of solid punt and kick
returners. Seniors Javone Lawson and Darryl
