Rombauer Wine Dinner - Landfall Ballroom 6 p.m.
Rombauer wines are consistently ranked high in the wine trade journals. Many of the finest restaurants
throughout the country include Rombauer wines on their list and feature them by the glass. Whether you
are a collector of fine wines or like to have wine with food, wine is something that truly should be enjoyed.
Rombauer Vineyards puts a lot of hard work and tender care into making drinkable wines. And because
wine is a simple product to enjoy, emphasis is given to taking the mystique out of enjoying fine wines.

GREEN’S CORNER
by Jeff Mack
We are glad to hear that the Champion greens on Nicklaus continue to receive favorable reviews from the CCL membership. Shorter day light lengths
and cooler night time temperatures have caused the growth of the Champion, just as any warm season turf type at this time of year, to slow dramatically.
This decrease in growth forces us to alter our weekly management practices. First, the need for weekly grooming, verticutiing, and topdressing of the turf to
keep it playing well is no longer needed until vigorous growth resumes next spring. Not to worry, the greens will continue to roll smooth with a quick pace
in the absence of these practices. We in fact will be very cautious as to not get the greens running like the “autobahn”. With a lack of leaf tissue growth, it is
difficult to slow them down if they get too fast. Secondly, it is wise to have a thick, healthy turf canopy as we approach the dormancy period. If you put the
turf to bed happy in the fall, it will wake up happy in the spring. Mowing heights will be slightly elevated as well. Having more leaf present will assist the
plant in carbohydrate storage.
As a reminder to the membership, the Dye greens are scheduled to be aerified at the very end of October. We will be utilizing the smaller .25” hollow tines
followed by light topdressing. Complete heal time should be no longer than 10 to 14 days assuming temperatures cooperate.
We are very proud regarding the performance of the Dye greens this past summer. Now that cooler weather has moved into our area, we are excited to
shift our management philosophy from focusing on survival to focusing on improved playability. An increase in the greens’ pace will be noticed rapidly, and
while an increase in surface firmness will also begin to become more apparent, it will be a bit slower transition compared to pace.
By the end of October, the par 3 tee boxes, driving range tees, and chipping areas will be overseeded for winter play. The exceptions to this will be the (3)
El Toro Zoysia tee boxes (black, white, + red) on #6 Ocean. Please keep in mind that the overseeded areas will be watered intensely for approximately (2)
weeks to encourage rapid seed germination and establishment.
This winter, we will be painting the Nicklaus greens, as well as all fairways, tees, and approaches that are not overseeded. With the recent advances in the
appearance of turf paints, their relatively low cost, and the negatives attached with overseeding, painting golf course turf is gaining traction as a practice to
provide attractive winter color on golf courses during the dormancy period.
For your safety, a non-slip material was recently installed to the bridge leading to #8 Ocean green. We hope that you notice an improvement when crossing
this bridge during damp/wet conditions.
Although some time has passed, we would still like to thank the CCL membership for their patience and understanding during the storm drainage repair
that took place on #9 Marsh approach, and golf course drainage repair to the right of #10 Dye green. Both drainage networks appear to now be functioning
normally.
Spring Dead Spot (SDS) is a disease that can attack Bermuda grass, including Champion, during the fall of the year; however, symptoms of injury are not
noticed until the following spring when the turf begins to break dormancy. If an area is left untreated, symptoms will typically intensify the following year.
We “map” out areas of the CCL fairways and approaches that are prone to this disease. That way, come October, we know exactly where to target our preventative fungicide applications to minimize the impacts of this pathogen without wasting material on areas where this disease has yet to become problematic.
Over the past month, we have been diligently adding 1” to 2” of cracked/manufactured sand, known as G-Angle, to the CCL greenside bunkers. We will
continue this process throughout the winter/spring until completed. This material is produced by running very coarse sand through a machine called a
“rock crusher”. The end result is a sand particle that has plenty of angularity. Plenty of angularity means that there are numerous sites for the individual
sand particles to lock together. As a result, this sand packs very well, but at the same time is relatively coarse, and allows water to infiltrate very rapidly. We
have spoken with numerous Clubs who have already utilized this sand. Results have been excellent whether being added to “cap” the existing bunker sand,
or used as a stand-alone.
We recently had a very worthwhile and informative visit from Pat O’ Brien with the USGA Green Section. He was very impressed with the CCL operation,
and at the same time left us with ideas to help us improve as we move forward. Part of the full day visit was spent with the CCL Green Committee in which
Pat conducted a power point presentation on “Painting Fairways”. This was followed by a tour of the new Champion greens. Besides conversation pertaining
to the greens, and painting, time was also spent discussing bunker maintenance, bunker sand, equipment, and various useful gadgets new to the turf industry.
As always, if you should have any questions, please feel free to stop me on the course, or make an appointment to see me in my office.
TIP OF THE MONTH by Greg Guman
Wow, the Greens are Great & Fast!
The new greens on the Nick are spectacular. They are true as can be and really fast. It is super important to be able to
control your distance and speed. The amount of tension in your hands, arms, shoulders and neck in your putting stroke
will make you or break you. Try to relax and soften every muscle you can. Tension and muscle contraction in your putting stroke will make the ball come off the putter like a fire cracker. “NOT GOOD, THE BALL IS GONE”. Practice trying
to be as soft as you can, hardly holding on to the putter and feeling like you are rolling the ball as lightly and as softly as
you possibly can, you will be amazed how true and great it will roll.
Soft Hands + Soft Golf Ball = Great Speed Control
Good luck and have fun on our PGA tour quality greens!

GOLF CLINICS
LGA NEWS & EVENTS
Beginner Ladies Clinic
Tuesday from 11 a.m. - 12 p.m.
October 1, 8, 15, 22, 29
No matter what far reaches of the US and beyond that we have lived in, I believe most of us would say our favorite
season of the year is fall. Fall in Wilmington is no exception. Cooler temperatures, and clear blue North Carolina skies
make for some of the best possible golf weather. As the 2013 golf season begins to wind down be sure to take advantage
of all that October has to offer here at the Country Club of Landfall.
We begin with the Pink Ribbon Golf Tournament on Thursday, October 3rd. CCL and the LGA have a long-standing
tradition of supporting the fight against breast cancer through the annual Pink Ribbon event and each year the Pink Ribbon committee strives to make the tournament bigger and better. As it should be, the emphasis is more on participation
than competition. I am hoping that many of you will be out to play.
Our most popular tournament of the LGA season, the Solheim Cup, is scheduled for October 17 and 18. This year’s
Pairings Party will take place two days in advance of the tournament, on October 15, so that the teams have ample time
to plan costumes and cart decorations. I am sworn to secrecy but know that this year’s Solheim Cup chairpersons have
some very special surprises in store. This is an LGA event you will not want to miss.
The Cape Fear Country Club / Porter’s Neck / Country Club of Landfall Ladies Invitational will take place at Cape
Fear Country Club on October 22nd. There are limited slots for each of the three clubs and all are likely filled by the time
you read this issue of the Breeze but don’t hesitate to call the Pro Shop and add your name to the list of interested players.
Last minute cancellations are to be expected and its always good to have a waiting list of interested players to turn to. If
you have never played at Cape Fear Country Club you are in for a great day and the annual Invitational is always a great
way to meet other lady golfers in the Wilmington area. Those acquaintances come in handy when you are in need of a
partner for upcoming Member/Guest tournaments.
Lastly, we still have several fun play days planned for the remainder of the season. The upcoming dates and games
are listed below.
As we look forward to the 2014 golf season please consider volunteering to serve on the LGA Board of Directors. We
would not exist without the active support and participation of you lovely volunteers. Having served the Board in many
capacities over the past several years I can vouch for the experience. The time commitment is small for the benefits
gained. Contact Sandy Crumrine, your 2013 LGA President for more information on the LGA Board positions available
in 2014. All it takes is “a little help from our friends!!”

MGA NEWS & EVENTS
Even though the fall season men’s tournaments are in full swing, the MGA is still the best play date for having a fun
day. With all of the interesting formats and mix of partners it never gets dull. Speaking of interesting formats, the “Red,
White and Blue” event right after Labor Day got rave reviews. It will surely be on the schedule next year. There are only
five or six more Wednesdays before the season ends on November 13. The competition for the “MGA CUP” remains very
close with the following men at the top of the list: Minson 29, Ill 32, Rendina 34, Phillips 41, Rose 45. Also, for the “Iron
Man” trophy the leaders are: Owens and Carrol 21, Johnson and Rose 20.

L9GA NEWS & EVENTS
Where has the year gone? Hard to believe it is already October and that the L9GA is winding down for the season.
September was a great month for the L9GA. On September 5th, we hosted the Porter’s Neck 9-Holer’s. We had a total
of 52 women between CCL & Porter’s Neck, and all had a wonderful time! After play, the staff at the Nicklaus Clubhouse treated everyone to a fantastic lunch where the winners were announced and prizes were handed out. A great
big “THANK YOU” goes out to our CCL Staff and everyone else who helped make this event such a huge success!!
With the cooler weather here, it is a great opportunity to get out and play some golf! Our new and faster greens are
being appreciated by all who play, I think we all can agree that it was definitely worth the wait! Let’s kick off this month
on Thursday, October 3rd with our Pink Ribbon Day at the Dye course starting at 9:00am. Sara Bush is planning some
very special surprises for Pink Ribbon Day so be sure to sign up early and to support the day with your pink proudly
showing! Right behind Pink Ribbon Day, on Sunday, October 6 will be another Couple Twilight with Dinner. Our last
Couples Twilight was held on August 25 and we had a beautiful Sunday afternoon to enjoy our sport with our partners.
Please be sure to sign up early as this event fills up very quickly. Our next opportunity to play will be on Thursday,
October 17th, with Team Match Play*. There will be no golf for the L9GA on Thursday, October the 10th or the 24th, as
the 10th is our Men’s Member/Guest and the 24th is the Landfall Tradition. To play on the 10th or 24th just call to set
your own tee time at one of the Pro shops or go online. Our last chance in October to play will be on Halloween, the
31st. We will be playing Monopoly Skins* at the Dye with an optional lunch. Please be sure to sign up online or just call
one of our Pro Shops to let them know to plan on you for golf and/or lunch! Our last event of 2013 golf for the L9GA
will be held on November 7th, at the Nicklaus, starting at 9 a.m. with a game of Captains Choice along with our End of
the Year Luncheon scheduled to follow play. We encourage all L9GA to attend this last round of golf and lunch. Last
but certainly not least, your L9GA 2013 Christmas Party will be held this year at the Landfall Clubhouse on Wednesday,
December 4th at 6:30 p.m. In our opinion, this is the best party of the whole year! Please be sure to register and mark
your calendar now so that you do not miss this special event. Being that the party is on December 4th, it is a great way
to kick off the Christmas season and a wonderful way to finish what has been an eventful and fun year with new and
old friends alike! See you on the course!

The beginning of this month is our Junior Club Championship. Can Gene
Middleton make it a 3-peat or will someone else stop him in his tracks? We
hope to have a good group of younger golfers making their first appearance in this event, and look forward to many battles for years to come.
This event is open to Full Members only, so be sure to sign up for this great

GROUP EXERCISE NEW CLASS
Starting October 1, the Thursday 10 a.m. class will become Power Pump. If you are a fan of body pump, this class is for
you. Crystal will take you through a total body intense strength training class. Be sure to check it out.
THE IMPORTANCE OF STRENGTH TRAINING!
When done properly Strength Training has far reaching affects on one’s life you might not realize.
One of the greatest benefits of Strength Training is the affect on one’s metabolism. Strength Training will increase
and elevate caloric expenditure, thus generating more loss of body fat. Muscle tissue burns as much as 15 times more
calories per day than does fat tissue — even when at rest! Nothing stokes your metabolism better than muscle. The aging process is also greatly affected by Strength Training. People assume that poor posture is a part of the aging process,
which is not always true. People who don’t Strength Train, experience muscle atrophy, and bone loss. These factors
greatly affect the one’s aging. Strength Training greatly slows the affects of aging, by building muscle mass and bone
density. Another factor is one’s sense of well being. I have found when people feel better, they are much happier to
carry on with daily activities. Clients report, even with Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis , when properly supervised not just
improves there outlook on life, but one’s overall physical performance of daily activities. These are just a few of many
benefits of Strength Training. Do u want to look better, feel better, and live a longer, healthier life? So what are you
waiting for? Get started now with a complete workout program that includes Strength Training.

CHANGE OF TRAFFIC FLOW IN LANDFALL PARKING LOT
We will be redirecting traffic entering the Landfall Clubhouse parking lot. This is being done as an appearance upgrade as you arrive at the Club and also
as a safety precaution.
Earlier in the year we cleaned up the appearance of the parking area through tree trimming and removal as well as changed the design of the front flower
beds and landscaping to better frame the clubhouse entry. The desire is to move entry and exit traffic to the driveway leading directly towards the clubhouse.
We would like our Members and Guests to first see our clubhouse and grounds rather than the service entrance to the club. The second desire is to prevent
a potentially dangerous situation. Many enter currently at a rather high rate of speed and with delivery trucks and employees leaving that area there have
been several close calls. This redirection can prevent an unfortunate accident.
Over the next several weeks and months you will see new signage reflecting the change as well as the installation of an entry bump at the service driveway.

It is not unusual for our Landfall Tradition to attract some of the nation’s top college teams and players. This year, that is true to the extreme. The 18team field will feature 9 of the top 25 currently ranked teams. In addition, the number one ranked player, Alabama’s Stephanie Meadow, and number five
ranked S. Ashlan Ramsey of Clemson along with 13 more of the top 50 ranked players will be taking on our Dye Course. So, if you enjoy watching some
of the best, and, no doubt, future stars of the LPGA, plan on coming out to watch the 2013 Landfall Tradition. Play begins each day at 8:30 AM October 25th
through the 27th. Our tournament has an exceptional reputation for strong community support, something the coaches and players really appreciate.
Please come and continue that tradition.

eligible to join. As we kick off this year we invite you to visit our new website, www.greatoaksclub.com for updated information on the club. Thank you
to Mary Vaughn for this new tool! In addition we would like to thank our outgoing president, Donna Gurley for a terrific year and welcome Clare Carr as
this year’s president. We look forward to a wonderful year.
This year’s Fall Festival will be Saturday, October 12. Please consider helping out with this fundraiser for various Great Oaks charities and projects. Sign up
with Suzanne Finkeldie at 509-9429. The Great Oaks Club also supports our Wilmington neighbors in need on a monthly basis by bringing non-perishable
food items to each meeting. Please give generously to the Little Red Wagon in the lobby to benefit The Good Shepherd Center and Mother Hubbard’s
Cupboard each month.
If you have not renewed your membership yet, NOW is the time. Please mail your $25 check to Cecile Blankenhorn at 2009 Seawind Lane. Please include
