Thanks to you, our foundation has had one of its best years ever and hundreds of thousands of children will benefit in the years ahead. 2014/15 bc children’s hospital foundation annual report At BC Children’s Hospital, evidence of the impact our donors have on health care in British Columbia is hard to miss. The Teck Acute Care Centre, the heart of the new BC Children’s Hospital, is rising from the ground. Construction is well underway on the third storey and, on the first, the Ledcor Children’s Emergency and the Lee Family Diagnostics and Imaging Area are now defined by concrete walls. During our $200-million Campaign for BC Children, we promised the transformation of care. Today, that transformation – of the BC Children’s site and in the delivery of care – is well underway. Thanks to lead benefactor Save-On-Foods and other donors, Child Health BC, an initiative of BC Children’s Hospital, is enhancing the delivery of specialized care across the province. With the addition of new telehealth sites in the past year, Child Health BC now has 11 active telehealth sites and another six in development – providing new opportunities for regional caregivers and patient families to connect remotely, but directly, with BC Children’s Hospital’s subspecialists. And at the hospital, clinical teams have been 3 working closely with planning and construction teams to ensure that, when the Teck Acute Care Centre opens in 2017, their young patients will benefit from both a new facility and significant enhancements in the practice of medicine. The transformation of Children’s Hospital, enhancements in care, and benefits to young people and families from BC, the Yukon, and beyond, epitomize the impact of philanthropy on pediatric health care. One action leads to another. People are inspired, enabled, empowered and, ultimately, they are connected to each other and positive change through the power of giving. In our 2014-15 fiscal year, the generosity of 119,000 people allowed us to provide $57.3 million in grants and contributions to the hospital, Sunny Hill, Child and Adolescent Mental Health and the Child & Family Research Institute. In the pages that follow, you will read about the incredible difference your philanthropy is making in the health and well-being of children. Further information on the year’s finances and use of funds is available on pages 31 to 35. Today we are focused on ensuring our efforts and your support lead to lasting and positive improvements in care. To that end, we are working more closely than ever before with our colleagues in the hospital, the research institute, Sunny Hill and Child and Adolescent Mental Health to safeguard the quality of care our children receive today while ensuring future generations will benefit fully from the best in medical care and the power of research. The connection between your support and long-term well-being of our youngest generation is reflected in the patient and donor stories in this annual report. Your generosity today ensures a healthier future for all of our children. With gratitude, Teri Nicholas, msw, rsw president & ceo David Podmore, o.b.c. chair, board of directors 4 5 6 2014/15 bc children’s hospital foundation annual report 7 Since the completion of the $200-million Campaign for BC Children in November 2013, the early stages of construction of the Teck Acute Care Centre, the heart of the new hospital, have transformed the BC Children’s Hospital site. Contributions from more than 80,000 donors from across BC and the Yukon made this massive and transformational project possible. In March 2014, Affinity Partnerships – the consortium chosen to manage the hospital construction project – revealed detailed, floor-by-floor designs for the eight-storey building. The plans reflected input from caregivers, hospital administrators, patients and their families. The layout shows thoughtful and family-centred features aimed at enhancing care for children. This includes spacious private patient rooms, healing gardens and operating rooms that will facilitate minimally invasive treatments. Between May and December 2014, construction crews demolished parts 8 of the 75-year-old Shaughnessy Building to make way for the Teck Acute Care Centre. The site also welcomed three cranes – Craniac, Apollo and George, named by children from across BC – to lift steel beams and other building materials into place. During a two-week period in March 2015, hospital staff walked through life-sized mockups of various clinical rooms – fitted with real medical equipment, patient beds, light switches, fixtures and more – to test the space and configuration of these features. The mockups allowed clinical users to test the design and evaluate the real-life model against their expectations. This process demonstrates the hospital’s ongoing commitment to building the best possible centre for children and families, and to ensuring our care providers can do their best work in the new facility. Child Health BC 2014/15 bc children’s hospital foundation annual report Meanwhile Child Health BC, a province-wide network supported by the campaign, including $20 million from lead benefactor Save-On-Foods, continued with its mandate to facilitate access to specialized care for children across the province. The Telehealth program, to which TELUS is the lead donor with a $5-million gift, extended its reach to 11 BC communities such as Williams Lake, Vernon, Kelowna and Nanaimo, allowing children and families living in or near those communities to meet with BC Children’s specialists via video-conference. At these virtual visits, BC Children’s specialists assess patients’ conditions as they would during an in-person appointment while a local caregiver assists the patient and family at these times. This latest expansion in telehealth benefits children who require surgery and usually must make four trips to BC Children’s Hospital. Now, in many instances patients and families need to make just one trip – for the actual surgery – to the hospital. The pre- and post-operative visits can be done via telehealth, saving these families significant costs and stress associated with travelling to BC Children’s in Vancouver. Child Health BC is considering expanding telehealth to other communities and adding new subspecialty services to benefit even more children and families in BC and the Yukon. In the past year, Child Health BC also launched the hip surveillance program for children with cerebral palsy (CP), the first of its kind in Canada. Due to their motor impairment, children with CP are at an increased risk of hip displacement – a painful outcome that can be prevented with proper and timely monitoring. Child Health BC is pleased to have recruited Dr. Kishore Mulpuri, a BC Children’s orthopedic surgeon, as the program’s medical lead and Stacey Miller, a BC Children’s Hospital physiotherapist, as the program coordinator. The program aims to coordinate health-care providers around the province and educate them on the importance of monitoring children for signs of hip displacement and to provide standards and guidelines for assessments. Ultimately, the program aims to reduce the number of children with CP who have to undergo complex hip surgery. 9 10 Campaign Leadership Donors BC Children’s Hospital Foundation is honoured to acknowledge the following donors who have generously contributed $1 million or more to the Campaign for BC Children. These outstanding donors accounted for $129.8 million of the $200 million raised through the campaign. In all, more than 80,000 individuals, businesses and community groups gave to help build a new hospital for BC’s kids. During visits to BC Children’s Hospital with their son and daughter, Brian and Andrea Hill felt no different. But the moment that hospital caregivers held their daughter before a cleft palate procedure, and seeing the expert care that their son received during a five-day stay to treat a respiratory virus, the Hills were overcome by a sense of calm and trust. “We always trusted the surgeons and staff but the compassion and subtlety they had when they were distracting [our daughter] before her surgery, was really touching for us. They had made it an art,” says Andrea. For the Hills, the personal grew into the universal; giving to BC Children’s Hospital became a defining principle in their lives. As leadership donors to the hospital, the Hills stress the importance of any gift, no matter how big or small, to child health in BC. “Having the best children’s hospital possible is an important part of making our province and city a better place. It’s better for people who live here, it’s better for children who need this facility. We feel that as a family we have an obligation to do our part to ensure it gets the funding it needs.” 12 Andrea Hill Gloria Yip, oncology patient Oncologist Dr. Rod Rassekh 13 continued from page 7 14 2014/15 bc children’s hospital foundation annual report 15 Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children is a one-of-a-kind provincial resource for children and youth with developmental and rehabilitation needs. Children cared for by Sunny Hill’s team live with a wide range of conditions that affect their everyday functions and abilities. These can range from acquired brain injury, autism and cerebral palsy, to prenatal exposure to substances and hearing and vision loss that accompanies complex medical or developmental challenges. The centre’s teams of health professionals offer assessment, diagnosis, consultation and intervention to meet the specific needs of each child. In 2014, Sunny Hill’s caregivers served 2,300 children in outpatient programs, received more than 1,760 visits from children, treated 145 children on an inpatient basis and provided more than 1,760 outreach visits across BC, complementing the resources available in each child’s community. 16 That same year, Sunny Hill was the site of a significant autism spectrum disorder (ASD) survey project led by Dr. Nancy Lanphear. The study explored procedures and standards in ASD diagnoses from 150 centres in six World Health Organization regions that provide these diagnostic services. Sunny Hill was also the site of a clinical project that explored the use of iPads to improve standardized tests, and low-tech virtual reality and robotic devices to help children and youth function and participate fully in their family and social lives. Donors provided $55,000 in funding to help further the goals of this important project. All of Sunny Hill’s staff and caregivers are dedicated to the centre’s shared principle—that it is “the right of every child and family to be full and active participants in their home and community life.” 2014/15 bc children’s hospital foundation annual report A few decades ago, the notion that children could routinely survive cancer, let alone receive treatment at home, seemed far-fetched. Today, thanks to advances in research and more effective therapies, it’s a reality for many patients at BC Children’s Hospital. As part of the hospital’s commitment to familycentred care, our caregivers treat children on an outpatient basis as often as possible, giving patients the opportunity to return home on the same day as their appointment and letting them sleep in their own beds at night. Studies have shown that spending time at home and with loved ones has a positive impact on children’s recovery and wellness. At BC Children’s, outpatient clinics are available for children who need treatment in neurology, oncology, dentistry, cardiology, orthopedics and mental health, among many other areas. In 2014, 187,830 visits were made to the hospital’s 45 outpatient clinics, most of which are found in its Ambulatory Care Building. Of these visits, 7,503 were made by children to our Oncology Outpatient Clinic. At any given time, about 700 children are in active inpatient treatment for cancer or blood disorders at the hospital; hundreds more receive outpatient and/or follow-up care for these conditions. Even with today’s superior treatments, many childhood cancer survivors face the risk of developing serious side effects after treatment. These patients must visit the hospital for regular monitoring so that they remain healthy for years to come. Donor support helps to fund the research and innovation needed to further improve treatments and survival rates. 17 For Jake and Judy Kerr, the environment that surrounds children as they heal is as important as treatment itself. So when the couple gave to BC Children’s Hospital, they did so with a mind to promoting a healing environment – one that surrounds critically ill and injured children and their families with warmth, comfort and peaceful distractions, and offers some calm away from daily anxieties. Personal experience with the hospital has also helped to motivate the Kerrs in their generosity. Jake and Judy’s children and grandchildren have benefited first-hand from the exceptional care and services of caregivers at the hospital. These experiences have further fuelled the couple’s generosity and have reaffirmed to them the importance of giving children and caregivers an environment that inspires them. 18 Jake and Judy Kerr Hans Gabriel Rana, cardiology patient Diane Hart, Director, Patient and Family Centred Care 19 continued from page 15 20 2014/15 bc children’s hospital foundation annual report 21 At BC Children’s Hospital, medical staff are best able to look after children when they have access to advanced equipment and technologies that help them to deliver precise and safe care. Interventional radiology, which involves image-guided procedures, is becoming more and more common for diagnosing and treating childhood conditions such as brain and lung tumours. Where a traditional surgical procedure might have required large incisions, interventional radiologists use thin catheters inserted through tiny holes in a child’s body to capture images that help them navigate to, and treat affected areas. This method can shorten recovery times dramatically. In 2014, $161,800 in donations helped to fund the purchase of a replacement 22 C-arm unit. This mobile imaging unit provides fluoroscopic imaging in the operating rooms to assist surgeons during complex procedures. This imaging provides safer and more efficient care to patients. Donors also gave $380,611 for stateof-the-art ultrasound equipment. New units provide reliable service and better meet the demand for imaging. In the Teck Acute Care Centre, the heart of the new BC Children’s Hospital, caregivers will be able to treat children in hybrid care suites— a blend of operating and interventional radiology rooms, where an anesthetist, radiologist and surgeon can work steps from each other, allowing for even more streamlined and timely care. Medical research takes time. While it may take years to uncover the cause of an illness, a research discovery has the potential to change the lives of countless children in BC and around the world. Each year, donors like you fund the work of more than 200 researchers and scientists at BC Children’s Hospital’s research institute, one of the few institutes in the world dedicated to child and family health. Our researchers come from every corner of the world, attracted by the high calibre of talent, research and the stable research infrastructure—thanks to donor dollars. Making the most of mobile phones 2014/15 bc children’s hospital foundation annual report In 2014, Dr. Mark Ansermino and his team in the hospital’s Child & Family Research Institute (CFRI) developed the new mobile app RRate. The app measures the respiratory rate in children in an average of 9.9 seconds, about six times faster than the standard manual method. Traditionally, the World Health Organization recommends measuring respiratory rate by counting a patient’s breath for 60 seconds using a stop watch. This app is a big step toward better diagnoses for children with respiratory illnesses such as pneumonia, the leading cause of death in childhood worldwide. It is particularly useful for health-care professionals working in low-resource areas, since it allows them to make faster and more accurate measurements, make better decisions and improve the outcomes of their patients. 23 Childhood leukemia discovery Last year, our researchers made great strides in the area of childhood cancer research. Dr. James Lim and his team discovered how a group of cell adhesion proteins called integrins promote the ability of leukemia cells to survive chemotherapy. In 15 per cent of leukemia cases, cell adhesion via integrins can cause the leukemia to return and become drug-resistant after treatment is complete. Dr. Lim is hopeful that by identifying these proteins, we will have a new target for cancer-fighting drugs—improving the odds for children fighting leukemia in BC and beyond. Hope for children with inflammatory bowel disease Every year at BC Children’s Hospital, about 100 children are diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), an umbrella term for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. The painful and potentially embarrassing effects of IBD have a particularly traumatic effect on children, who often grow up confined to their homes, unable to play sports or participate in other childhood activities. CFRI scientist Dr. Bruce Vallance, in collaboration with US colleagues, has found that the cells lining the gut make inflammasomes, groups of proteins that work together to trigger an immune response. This finding refutes a common belief that the cells lining the gut aren’t able to make these proteins. Dr. Vallance and his team suspect that many people with IBD develop the disease because their intestinal cells don’t properly activate inflammasomes, making them more susceptible to chronic bacterial infections. It’s also possible that inflammasomes help repair damage to the intestinal walls, and that this healing function is impaired in people with IBD. With a better understanding of how inflammasomes are involved in IBD, Dr. Vallance hopes that more targeted therapies can be developed to treat this currently incurable disease. 24 concerns. BC Children’s Hospital meets this growing need for mental health care by conducting assessments, providing outpatient services and running inpatient programs. Resources such as the Kelty Mental Health Resource Centre and the popular website, mindcheck.ca, provide mental health information, resources, and support to children, youth and families across the province. Mindcheck.ca is an attractive, interactive website focused on early intervention. It’s designed to help young people become aware of changes in their thoughts, feelings and behaviours that may indicate possible emerging mental health challenges, and to take action to prevent them from becoming more serious. The site has a wide reach. In 2014, mindcheck.ca received 98,792 visits and the resources available on the website (self-help guides and apps, worksheets, self-assessments and games) were downloaded 3,169 times for the benefit of young people in 168 countries. 2014/15 bc children’s hospital foundation annual report For many children, childhood and adolescence can be intense and difficult to navigate. Young people, already coping with developing brains and personalities, often find themselves manoeuvring through challenges related to relationships, family dynamics and, in some cases, trauma. These pressures can take a toll on mental health, leading to anxiety issues, compulsions, substance use problems and depression. For those children living with severe mental illness, many life changes and triggers could lead to distress. Each year, BC Children’s Hospital, the province’s only pediatric acute-care hospital, meets the needs of children and adolescents with existing and emerging mental health problems. In 2014 alone, the hospital’s Mental Health Outpatient Program received 14,236 visits. That same year, 1,063 children and youth visited the Emergency Department with mental health 25 John and Dana Montalbano’s visits to BC Children’s Hospital always left them impressed with the ways in which caregivers deliver compassionate care to every young patient. The Montalbanos see the rising demand for longterm respiratory care, and recognize that BC Children’s Hospital has to be able to continue to meet that demand with world-class treatment for children with breathing challenges. Thanks to donors like the Montalbanos, who made a gift of $1 million to the Campaign for BC Children, the new Teck Acute Care Centre will be home to a new inpatient unit for children with respiratory conditions. The new facility will give patients and families access to specialized care in an environment designed to meet their unique needs. “Outside of the well-being of one’s family, there’s nothing more satisfying than to give philanthropically,” says Dana Montalbano. John Montalbano sees child health as an excellent cause, particularly for those who want to start giving back to the community. “For those yet to do so, we strongly encourage individuals, families and organizations to consider their first steps into philanthropy with BC Children’s Hospital,” he says. Undesignated donations to BC Children’s Hospital go to the Excellence in Child Health Fund, which ensures the most urgent health needs of BC’s children are met with the support of research into childhood diseases, medical equipment purchases and upgrades, and staff and family education programs. In 2014-15, $1,855,000 from the fund was used to acquire medical equipment, giving caregivers at BC Children’s and Sunny Hill Health Centre the tools they need to provide the best possible care to sick and injured children. Of this total, $69,700 went toward the purchase of a GE Aisys Carestation anesthesia machine, which provides life-sustaining ventilation and anesthesia to small patients during surgery. Nearly $450,000 from the Excellence in Child Health Fund supported researchers and clinicians working to improve treatments and find a cure for children’s cancers and blood disorders. In 2014, donors provided $707,000 toward research into the specific acute care needs of children with medical challenges related to their faces, skulls, blood vessels and more that require surgical intervention. This work encourages technological innovation and aids training and education of junior researchers. Thanks to donors’ support, children in BC and the Yukon have access to health-care services that rank among the best in the world. 30 The majority of this increase came from investment income, which grew by $5.26 million year over year. Unrestricted revenue, primarily from annual fundraising programs, was up slightly, as was revenue from our two lotteries, which support research programs at BC Children’s Hospital. Restricted revenue, primarily from major gifts, dropped by $4 million to $28.6 million as anticipated in our first full post-campaign fiscal year. 2014/15 bc children’s hospital foundation annual report Solid investment performance coupled with continued strength in both annual and major gift fundraising moved BC Children’s Hospital Foundation’s total consolidated revenues to a new high in the 2014-15 fiscal year, ended March 31, 2015. Total consolidated revenues, including lotteries and investments, were a remarkable $96.2 million in 2014-15, a new record for the foundation and up from $92.2 million in the year prior. 31 ” At a Glance ” $1.2 million raised $18,036,788 RAISED $1.1 million raised TOP THREE MIRACLE WEEKEND INDUSTRY SECTOR SUPPORTERS: 32 $8m $7m $6m $5m $4m $3m $2m $1m 0 $6.3 M $2.1 M $1.5 M retail & wholesale division banks division mining for miracles In June 2014 we announced Miracle Weekend revenue of $18,036,788, marking the second consecutive year with Miracle Weekend revenue of over $18 million. Bequest in Your Will A bequest is a direction in your will that a certain sum of money, a particular asset, or a portion of the estate is to be given to British Columbia’s Children’s Hospital Foundation (our legal name). A bequest made to the foundation generates a tax credit that offsets the tax otherwise payable on up to 100 per cent of your net income in the year of death. Unused credits can be carried back one year. These credits may result in significant income tax savings and increase your net estate. Life Insurance You can make BC Children’s Hospital Foundation the beneficiary of an existing or new life insurance policy. Giving life insurance is a way of making a significant gift without depleting your estate. At the end of your lifetime, the policy proceeds will be paid by the insurance company directly to BC Children’s Hospital Foundation. Depending on how the policy is structured, you may receive a tax benefit during your lifetime or your estate will receive the benefit. 70 Publicly Traded Securities Donating securities is an effective way to give. If you own publicly traded securities that have increased in value and you decide to sell them, 50 per cent of the capital gain is taxable. However, if you donate these securities “in kind” to BC Children’s Hospital Foundation, no tax is payable on the capital gain. The resulting tax credit from the donation of the securities will reduce taxes payable on other income. Making a gift of publicly traded securities is easy to do. Please contact us for a transfer form to facilitate the process. RRSP/RRIF You can name BC Children’s Hospital Foundation as the direct beneficiary of the proceeds of your RRSP or RRIF, or you can make a gift of the proceeds from your RRSP or RRIF to BC Children’s Hospital Foundation in your will. The resulting tax credit may be used to offset the tax payable on the redemption of the proceeds of the retirement plan. Pledges Our pledge program offers you a convenient method of making contributions. The program allows you to spread your contribution over three to five years, usually commencing the year the pledge is made. You will receive full recognition for the value of your contribution as soon as the commitment is made. BC Children’s Hospital Foundation is a registered Canadian charity and issues tax receipts for all donations.
