(MIKA (P) 158/12/2009 Newsletter Volume 11, Issue 4, 09 September 2010 Save the date Message from the Principal September 10 Hari Raya Puasa No School This Friday we are celebrating the festival of Eid or Hari Raya Puasa, a public holiday in Singapore. It falls on the first day of Syawal, the 10th month of the Islamic calendar Hijrah. It is an occasion to celebrate the end of a month-long fasting called Ramadan. Hari Raya is Malay for "grand day of rejoicing" and in Singapore, it is the most prominent of all Muslim festivals. On behalf of the school, we hope that our Muslim families enjoy their celebration and we will look forward to learning more about this celebration during our assemblies next week. September 15 School Photographs September 16 Grade 6 & 7 Excursion - Asian Civilisations Museum September 18 Cognita Principal’s CupGolf Tournament September 22 MYP Parent Workshop September 25 Family Picnic September 29 PYP Parent Workshop On Monday, we started our afterschool and lunchtime activity program which is always very popular with the students. Despite the rain we had a very successful week and I would like to thank Ms. Karen Voroney for all her work in preparing the program and allocating staff and students to activities. On Wednesday, we had the first of our series of Information Coffee afternoons which saw a large group of parents in attendance to discuss and learn more about our Learning Support department, its programs and the processes we have in place to cater for individual needs and differentiate student learning. It highlighted how important these sorts of sessions are in articulating the school’s vision and what we can do to shape it. I would like to thank Carrie Lupoli for her wonderful presentation and to the parents for engaging in such an important discussion. Thank you also to the PTA for their support in organizing these events and if you have any ideas about future topics you would like covered, I am sure they would like to hear from you. School Photo’s - Next week, September 15th, we will be taking our class and individual photo’s for the year – children will be required to wear their full school uniform including closed in shoes (no crocs or ballet slippers). We would also ask that children are neat & tidy in appearance which includes girls tying their hair back with hair ties. Please do not send children in their PE uniform on this day. A reminder to all our parents to observe the school’s parking lot speed limit of 10kph. Also, slow down as you pass the raised walkway. It is imperative that we observe these rules to keep our children safe! Have a great weekend everyone! The children made some beautiful decorations to help celebrate Hari Raya which were on display around the room during our assembly. Miss Christabel’s KG1 class gave a lovely rendition of the “Brown Bear, Brown Bear who do you see?” book. book What clever students to remember the order and all the animals in the book! book Starting next week we will be running additional and different small groups for children in the Early Years. These are fun small groups which give intense structured language, communication and social skills to children. I have been running these for many years and enjoy them as much as the children do. They are play based sessions which run for 20 minutes once per week. During the next few months all the children will be involved in these groups at some time. If you would like more information on this, please do not hesitate to contact me. Polite Notice –Can parents of children in the Early Years please take their snacks outside of the canteen between 11am and 1pm. Happy Holidays to all. Why should you know more about it? How is it connected to the American curriculum? What has it got to do with lifelong learning and global citizenship? We would like to invite you to the PYP Information Evening on September 29, 2010 at 7:30pm. The key idea we will inquire into is: The PYP is an international curriculum framework that promotes student-centered, relevant, significant, challenging and engaging teaching and learning. As the session will be organized in a workshop format we ask that you RSVP to our PYP Coordinator Miss Raquel at [email protected] to confirm a place. Upon receipt of your confirmation, we require your help! Assessing prior knowledge is all part of the learning cycle. To enable SAIS to facilitate parents understanding of the IB Primary Years Programme and how you can support your children’s learning at home, we will ask you to complete the survey so we can endeavor to include your inquiries in our introductory workshop. On Friday, there is no school because of the holiday. We wish all our Muslim families a Happy Hari Raya Puasa! Finally, I would like to congratulate the following children who received merit awards this week in the Elementary assembly. Great work! We are all really proud of you. Students prepared their presentations in science class this week and, upon reflection, they really know their stuff! I was especially impressed at how the students contextualized the significant concept in a way that was appropriate for younger students. I would like to thank the parents who took the time out of their schedules to attend the assembly and celebrate the grade 6’s learning. It really means a lot to the students and to our Middle School. Our Middle School PTA representative, Mrs. Laurie Lang and our Middle School room parent, Mrs. Julie Collado spent a great deal of time organizing a successful Middle School coffee and I was glad to see so many parents attending the session. We spent a great deal of time discussing different possibilities for events and celebrations and I’m excited to have such vibrant room parents for Middle School. I am also very thrilled about our music program led by Mr. Miller. He has all the Middle School students playing an instrument, but more so, the students are energized about music class. I was able to attend one of Mr. Miller’s grade 6 music classes and he had the students ‘breathing correctly’ in order to play their brass instruments. I was in awe at the buttery smooth sound that Mr. Miller was able to conduct out of the students! Students in the Middle School are looking forward to the Asian Civilisations Museum on Thursday, September 16th. Please remember that all students will need to bring a ‘nut-free’ packed lunch on this day. A reminder that after school activities (ASA) have started this week and middle school students have been busy playing chess, cheerleading and practicing taekwondo. A special thanks to Ms. Voroney for organizing such a great experience for all of our students. Studies indicate that middle school students that participate in extra-curricular activities generally do ‘better’ in all aspects of school life. Finally, a reminder that I will be leading an introductory Middle Years Program (MYP) session on September 22nd at 7:30 p.m. in the Multipurpose Hall. All parents from all grade levels are welcome to attend, however I ask that you RSVP before then to: [email protected]. As always, thanks for the support.
