J.J. Sedelmaier Hosts Showing of “Jerry Beck’s - Worst Cartoons Ever!”
Herein lies a selection of some of the worst animated films ever made. In the early
days of TV animation in the 1950’s and 60’s, producers were looking for ways to cut
corners, and made cartoons as cheap as possible. How cheap? You’ll find out. You’ll
meet cartoon characters with moving human mouths, and others with no mouths at
all. You’ll be escorted through such travesties as Mighty Mister Titan (a heavy-handed,
limited-animation piece of cold war physical fitness propaganda); Pow Wow the Indian
Boy (we dare you to keep from humming the theme song), and The Mummynappers
(which isn’t really even animation at all, just silhouetted human beings prancing
around drawn backgrounds). Nobody sets out to make bad cartoons. These just
happen to come around when TV was in its infancy when producers had to churn out
animated films at such low budgets. In fact, you’ll see work of some of the greatest
animators ever, such as Hugh Harmon. Unfortunately, this is their worst work. So get
out some rancid popcorn and flat soda, and sit back and enjoy…The Worst Cartoons
Ever!

CSC: Adaptation Issues
Shakespeare, Jonah Hex, and Bande Dessinée Bradley Weber (Juniormadscientist.
com) examines various comics adaptations of King Lear while discussing ways to
make Shakespeare’s plays accessible and relevant to younger readers. Bradley
Schauer (University of Arizona) uses Jonah Hex to argue attempting to monetize
comics properties through films has ironically decreased the “presold” audience by
alienating niche fan bases. David Mitchell (School of the Art Institute of Chicago)
examines how Enki Bilal’s control of every element of Nikopol Trilogy allows him to
seamlessly integrate the unreal with the real, whereas in his film verion Immortal, he
willingly separates the real and unreal between live-action and CGI. Dan Carroll (Stick
Figure Hamlet) responds to the discussion of adapting theater, sequential art, and
cinema.
CSC: Interpreting Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind
Nicholas Theisen (University of Michigan) explores how Miyazaki Hayao’s Nausicaä
of the Valley of the Wind rewrites Homer’s Odyssey and Wu Cheng’en’s Monkey King

may be worse than a burden. Rebecca Sader (University of Texas-Dallas) examines
environmental ethics in Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind.
CSC: Otherness in America
Archie, We3, and the Post-Racial Nation Charles Coletta (Bowling Green State
University) places the recent political, cultural, and gender updating of Archie,
including the bleak “Life With Archie” imaginary stories, into a historical context.
Christopher Deis (DePaul University) examines race as a background “floating
signifier” in Captain America, The Walking Dead, and Fables and the challenge of
the language and ideology of colorblindness. David B. Olsen (Saint Louis University)
identifies the connection between contemporary theorizing of the animal and the way
in which images of animals have appeared to us throughout history using Albrecht
Dürer’s woodcut of a (partly imaginary) rhinoceros and Grant Morrison and Frank
Quitely’s We3 to illuminate how the animal is continually remade in our own image.
CSC: Representing Science and Medicine in Comics
MK Czerwiec (Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine) provides a detailed
summary of the growing field of “Graphic Medicine,” the inclusion of graphic narratives
as text and method in medical school humanities programs. David E. Beard (University

form for the evocation and inculcation of values—specifically, values about science.

interviews to explore the fascination with superheroes and the superhero complex in
physique athletes and steroid users. Courtney Schneider examines the treatment of
homosexuality to promote tolerance and acceptance as well as the current state of gay
characters in serialized media and their impact on the topic of sexuality
CSC: The Difficulty of Definition: Autobiographical Comics, Black Sci-Fi, Comics
in the Classroom
