Nursing.
Purpose
This conference will provide participants with ways to integrate interprofessional collaboration in healthcare research,
network with colleagues, and engage in interprofessional dialogue around basic, clinical, educational and translational
research studies and findings.
Target Audience
Healthcare professionals to include Nurses, Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Respiratory Therapists,
Social Workers, Dietitians, Physicians, Registered Pharmacists, Academic Faculty, Educators, Students and those
interested in healthcare research.
Objectives
At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:

Discuss trends in funding for health related research.
Discuss the research goals of NIH and Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute.
Discuss the premise of translational research and how it impacts health care.
Review translational, innovative and transformational health research partnerships.
Define the following research strategies and understand their intent: basic science, translational, comparative
effectiveness, implementation science, and quality improvement.
Identify select delivery system priorities for Comparative Effectiveness Research.
Articulate the goals and objectives of Patient Centered Outcome Research, and its relevance to nursing
education, research, and practice.
Discuss research studies being conducted that impact healthcare.
Define immersive technology, Multi-User Virtual Environment, Second Life and virtual simulation.
Explain the characteristics and concepts of using MUVE to support learning and practicing to support nursing
education and nursing best practice.
Discuss interdisciplinary healthcare genetics and genomic research.

Faculty
Windsor Westbrook Sherrill, PhD, MBA, MHA, is a professor of public health sciences at Clemson University. Dr.
Sherrill also serves as Chief Science Officer at the Greenville Health System and interim Associate Vice President for
health research at Clemson University.
Matthew F. Hudson, PhD, MPH, is the Comparative Effective Research Director at the Greenville Health System in
Greenville, South Carolina.
Susan Bethel, MSN, RN, NE-BC, is the Manager of Nursing Scholarship and Research at the Greenville Health
System in Greenville, South Carolina.
Annette Drake, RN, BSN, MSM, is a Nurse Educator in the Nursing Staff Development Department at AnMed

Dietitians: 5 hours of CPE for registered dietitians.
Licensed Nurses: Upstate AHEC is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the South Carolina
Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on
Accreditation.
This CE activity is approved for 5 contact hours for licensed nurses.
Occupational Therapists: This program has been approved for 6 contact hours of continuing education for
Occupational Therapists. SC AHEC has presumptive approval as a provider of continuing education for
Occupational Therapists by the SC Board of Examiners for Occupational Therapy.
Physical Therapists: This program has been approved for 6 contact hours of continuing education by SC AHEC under
its accreditation by the SC Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation Board of Examiners for Physical Therapy.
Respiratory Care Practitioners: 5 clock hours will be awarded by Upstate AHEC, an approved provider of continuing
education for respiratory care practitioners by the SC Board of Medical Examiners.
Social Workers: This program has been approved for 5 clock hours of non-social work continuing education by
Upstate AHEC, as part of the SC AHEC system, under its accreditation by the SC Board of Social Work Examiners.
Others: This program is approved for 0.5 CEUs (5 clock hours) by Upstate AHEC and meets SC AHEC Best
Practice Standards.
Successful completion of the program requires attendance for at least 90 percent of the course and a completed
evaluation by the participant.
