Why is the Cobra Museum such a great venue? Because it has so much more to offer than meets the eye. Cobra has always stood for freedom, vitality and social engagement. That is clear throughout the museum, and also during events. About Cobra. On Monday 8 November 1948, six artists created a new group and a new movement. Tired of suffocating under rules and lazy convention, they yearned for freedom – the freedom to stretch their wings, do as they please. They quickly settled on a name: CoBrA. No, not the snake (that turned up later), but the first letters of their capital cities of origin: Copenhague, Bruxelles, Amsterdam (being in Paris, they spelled them in French). Now, many years later. Most of the Cobra artists are long gone, but their work remains. As does the power almost of Cobra. The name has become a brand: C©bra. As the multifaceted artist Lucebert put it, “This story is so good, it’s still not over.” And about the museum. The Cobra Museum opened on Wednesday 8 November 1995. Situated on the Sandbergplein, the building is airy and spacious, full of colour and light, accommodating to visitors and staff and to its own collection. And to contemporary art by artists working in the spirit of Cobra, the ones who favour freedom, space, emotion, innovation, uniqueness. Who are often socially engaged. Because that is how we retain our clear vision, retain freshness and vitality. The Cobra Museum as a venue The Cobra Museum for Modern Art More to offer than meets the eye. Architect Wim Quist designed a building that is modern and light. Spaces are generous, sunlight floods in, art adds colour and creates a sense of wellbeing. Events take place among works of art, not in a faceless meeting room. Whether you are planning a dinner for seven or a reception for seven hundred, this is the place. The building is relaxed and flexible; we are alert and flexible. The museum is beautifully situated on a large square at the heart of Amstelveen, fourth on the list of the Netherlands’ most pleasant cities to be in. Getting here is easy, parking is close by. And you can rely on us to provide everything you need, from cloakroom to Wi-Fi, from broadband internet to whisper-sensitive microphone. What’s more, we are eager to tell you everything you could possibly want to know about Cobra. Ordinariness is everywhere. But you want something special. And that is perfect, because so do we. We do our best to make special things happen. Together with you, we will select the best parts of the building for your event. We will provide a graceful welcome for your guests, ensure that your time frame stays firmly in place. Our staff are experienced, helpful, cordial. We see to that every single day. The Cobra Museum has a dedicated team of chefs, each of whom we have worked with for years. They compose menus in collaboration with you, working around seasonally available ingredients and special requirements. Our wine list is extensive, and we offer a selection of exquisite coffees, including hand-picked organic Redbeans and Arabica. You need not leave empty-handed either: our museum shop has a wonderful array of art and design items ranging from exhibition catalogues and original graphic works to unique, handmade jewellery. All in all, we have only one aim: to ensure that you return, and return again. For business, for pleasure. We were more than pleased with both the museum and its staff, whose flexibility ensured that everything was done according to our wishes. The venue is a spacious, open, light and inspiring location for any event. We enjoyed a wonderful evening, and will certainly return here often.” The boardroom is a beautiful space for a meeting, presentation or brainstorming session. The room has a fixed set-up with an oval table. Situated on the upper floor near the museum offices, this is an area of privacy and quiet. One of the room’s long walls features original works of art, while the other consists largely of windows with a view over the square’s Karel Appel fountain. The location is suitable for a wide range of activities. As an auction house, we appreciate the easy transition from exhibition space to auction hall - the space is completely transformed within a short space of time. Cobra Museum staff not only provide excellent service but also accommodate all of our requirements. In particular, I appreciate the in-house team and the fact that the museum is such an inspiring location for gatherings. In short, the Cobra Museum is a high-quality venue, with tailor-made service and plenty of options to choose from.” – Eva Kooijmans, General Manager of Gavelers Auctioneers Situated in the building’s western corner, the lecture hall offers a view of the museum entrance and the square. That helps them open their minds to the unexpected. And another bonus: parking is available immediately outside.” – Twan van de Kerkhof, director of European Leadership Platform The modern café and its outdoor terrace are open to the public during museum opening hours. Later, they undergo a festive transformation for evening receptions and dinners. The café is an excellent setting for an informational gathering or for a cultural intermezzo. Advantages Multifunctional Catering available Outside of the museum Available for Receptions Drinks Dinner Capacity Up to 80 Ground floor exhibition area “The ABU chose the Cobra Museum as a private venue for a particularly festive dinner in the Water room, with its view of the Karel Appel fountain and the pond. We were free to use all of the museum’s facilities, and obviously we also enjoyed our tour. The food was superb, and the ambiance was absolutely different from that at a restaurant. A winner!” – Tessa de Rooij-Hoogland, executive secretary for ABU “The Cobra Museum was an obvious choice for us: as advisors to the municipality of Amstelveen, the Russell legal firm was intensively involved in the museum’s development. The museum is located in the centre of town, with excellent parking options, and all staff were exceptionally cooperative. We felt absolutely at home. – Reinier W.L. Russell, Russell Advocaten Wim Quist’s design for the building makes it particularly suitable for gatherings in the exhibition spaces. The two rooms – the Patio and the Water Room – are separated by Tajiri’s Zen Garden, which was designed especially for the Cobra Museum.
