cross cultural contact between Hawaiians and First Nations people. We are seeking familial
information on one, Fred Yamamoto or Fred Egawa who was said to have been born in
Lahaina, Maui. His parents are said to have come from Osaka, Japan. At age 12 Fred moved
to San Francisco where he learned how to box. His boxing career took him to the state of
Washington where he married a Lummi woman. With the help of Fred Egawaʻs grand
daughter, Chenoa, a performing artist of the Lummi nation, the KHB is preparing to compose

In past months we have lost good friends of this newsletter, the Kapalakiko I Ke Aloha
organization, the Kapalakiko Hawaiian Band, the San Francisco Bay area community at large,

Harrison Anduja is a 1956 graduate of Farrington High School and served with me as cheer
leaders of the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa Roaring Rainbows in1958. She now resides in

• Project Kuleana 2, Ka Na‘i Aupuni/Where AreThe Brothers?: Janie del Rosario, one of our
Hawaiian music students, sent this and I pass it on to all of you. Done by the same
production team that gave you Project Kuleana 1, Kaulana Nā Pua/All Hawai‘i Stand
Together, only three cultural practitioners from Project 1 appear on this video: Mike
Ka‘awa, Sonny Lim who appears with his two of his sisters; Nani and Lorna; and Kamakoa
Lindsey-Asing. It is nice to see my friends, Robert Cazimero, Lena Boy Naipo (of
Kahulanui), Ata Damasco, and Richard Ho‘opi‘i. Cool, too, to catch up with Kimo Bell who
was both Roland Cazimeroʻs and Brother Nolanʻs bassist. Kimo, one time engaged to
Lehua Kalima of Na Leo Pilimehana, used to live in the same building as Ryan Tangʻs
mama, Avis (across the street from Lanakila Church in Kaimukī-Kapahulu. I tell of a funny
anecdote of Kimo that involved the high cut shoes I used to wear. Itʻs always good to
hear Casey Olsenʻs steel guitar, and Sean Nāʻauao and his Mana‘o and Company. Because
of her politics and involvement with the Save Mauna Kea Movement, I am most intrigued
with Hāwane Rios, who I do not know. She turns out to be the daughter of an old
acquaintance, kumu hula Pua Case. Perhaps, Iʻll get to meet Hāwane some day/one day.
To me, the most touching moment comes at the end of the shoot with a warm salute to
Piggy Kaleohano, who with Bernard Kalua, Ku‘ulei Ahuna, Clayton Kua, and Abe Keala
formed the Blalahs of Keaukaha oh so many years ago. Piggy passed away last year.
Moon Kauakahiʻs haunting mele Kaleohano was written for Piggy and his ‘ohana. Linked
with this video is the shoot of "Where Are The Brothers". It certainly is a musical treat to
see Chucky Boy Chock, Ernie Cruz Jr., and bassist Sean Nāleimaile who takes a turn in
front of the camera. Just like Project Kuleana 1, Kaulana Nā Pua/All Hawai‘i Stand
Together, you gotta view this video. For me, I wish that these wonderfully performed
mele were put into itʻs historical/political context. Without any explanation of this
context, these remain wonderfully performed mele. Both Kaulana Nā Pua and Ka Na‘i
Aupuni are not merely mele just for musicians to perform; these lyrics calls for unity
among the Hawaiian people and support for the usurped Hawaiian nation.
• San Francisco Bay Area/Northern California Hawaiian music scene, Summer/Fall 2015:
The Hawaiian music scene has always had itʻs up and downs guided by the fluctuations of
the economy. There are venues that feature local to the area talent and others that
feature the “name” performers that are passing through. Some venues do both. *** In
the San Francisco Bay area, Paina Lounge (San Francisco) Noelaniʻs Bar & Lounge (San
Carlos); Da Kine Island Grill (San Jose); Park Chalet (San Francisco); Melomelo Kava Bar
(Berkeley); 4th Street Bowl Lounge (San Jose) who have weekly or regular Hawaiian

music programming. Other venues who feature occasional concerts usually by “name”
performers include: Freight and Salvage [Berkeley); Club Fox/Fox Theater (Redwood
City);Yoshiʻs (Oakland) The Cue (Concord); House of Hawaiian Music (San Lorenzo). ***
Things have really lit up on the Central Coast from Monterey to Santa Cruz with Pono
Hawaiian Grill (Santa Cruz) featuring both local and “name” talent on a weekly basis.
American Burger (Monterey) and Daddyʻs City Diner (Marina) also promotes Hawaiian
music. Don Quixoteʻs International Music Hall (Felton) and Kuumbwa Jazz Club (Santa
Cruz) occasionally features Hawaiian music sandwiched between other genres of music.
• “Letʻs Play Music” Part II, Kickstarter Campaign: Cyril Lani Pahinui and the Nā‘ālehu
Theater have started a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for their ”Letʻs Play Musicʻ
project that will feature the greats of Hawaiian music in an intimate setting straight from
the heart of Waimānalo. Thereʻs isnʻt much time left till the cutoff deadline which is
about 11 days from when you receive this newsletter. Any amount of donation will be

• U-Space, Los Angeles, CA: U-Space is a collaborative effort between Brad Ranola and
Cary Hitsman of Anacapa ʻUkulele, Jason Arimoto, Daniel Ho, and the Japanese American
Cultural Community Center (JACCC). U-Space is a coffee shop, a music school (with a
heavy emphasis on ʻUkulele), and a retail ʻUkulele store all in one location. U-Space is

• Kamaka ‘Ukulele: Chris Kamaka writes from Honolulu: In 1916, Samuel Kalali‘ili‘i Kamaka
formed his one-man shop “Kamaka ‘Ukulele and Guitar Works.” As 2016 approaches,

• Nate Defiesta, long time bassist for the Kapalakiko Hawaiian Band passed away at the Red
Hawk Casino in Placerville. while at a family celebration. Viewing was held at Lima Mortuary
in Santa Clara [466 North Winchester Boulevard, Santa Clara, CA 95050]. Thursday 13
August at 6pm. Mass was held on Friday,14 August, 10am at St. Justin [Catholic Church] in
Santa Clara [2655 Homestead Road, Santa Clara, CA 95051], followed by reception, at
noon.
• Our steelie, Bobby Black was injured in an horrendous auto accident on a musical tour with
the Western Swing band, Lost Weekend in Colorado. The accident occurred on the trip from
the Denver Airport to the Evergreen Jazz Festival. His spinal chord was broken and his wife
Sheila brought him back home to Manteca where he is recuperating and could use some
moral support. Drop him a line at 488 Bellchase Drive. Manteca, CA 95336. Doctors say it

will take 3 months for his spine to fuse back together. If this happens, Bobby vows to play
at out fundraiser in December. Iʻm pulling for him.
• Kapalakiko angels, Pudgie & Joanne Wong will close their music store, El Cerrito Music Works
on 31 October 2015 because Pudgie will undergo some heavy medical procedures.
• The KHBʻs head guitarist, Karen Gehrman has left on a yearʻs sabbatical on a round the
world trip with her family. Her KHB duties will be taken up by Tina Urata & Allan Goodman.
When push comes to shove, we can call on ex-KHBers Mikaele Waeger and Richard Sanico.
We are trying to diversify the talents of our musicians which makes them more valuable as
performers. Already Teresa Cooper & Lillian Fujimoto play ʻukulele, bass, and both hula.
Randee Chin plays ʻukulele, can dance, and is currently studying the steel guitar with Allan
Akaka. Lillian is also looking forward to the steel guitar and Tina Urata can double on the
ʻukulele and can hula. George Bobias, Jeanette Cordero & Loretta Hoffman are latent violin
players; Barb Plank is a latent guitarist and autoharpist and all can hula. Some of our long
departed members have expressed thoughts of returning to our performing ranks and we
are always open for new members to join the band. We especially covet ʻukulele players,
guitarists, stand up and electric bassists, autoharpists, mandolin players, Norteno or Cajun
accordionists, fiddlers, steelies and key boardists.
