Glendora Named as a finalist for
“Most Business Friendly City” Award
Scouts Volunteer in Glendora
It’s no secret that Glendora over the years has benefited from
the hard work and dedication of many Girls and Boy Scout troops
throughout the city. Ian Tauer is another great example of the
amazing volunteerism that scouts in Glendora put into their community. Ian is a 6 grade student at St. Dorothy and like many in
his troop 491 he is working toward completing another merit
badge. Boy Scouts have several merit badges they must earn
before reaching the rank of Eagle Scout. They have the opportunity to investigate around 120 different areas of knowledge and
skills. Merit badges are important because they play a major role
in the scouting advancement program, developing leadership
skills, while learning and giving back to the community. The City
of Glendora truly benefits while youth learn and experience important life skills.
Ian is working on his Citizenship in the Community Merit Badge and he selected the
Community Services Department’s Adopt-a-Park Program to gain knowledge and volunteers
to promote the program.
In order to complete and earn the Citizenship in the Community Merit Badge Ian must
complete a lengthy 8 step process, which includes interviews with government officials,
attending City Council meetings and doing charitable volunteer work.
Other Scout troops have also dedicated time to various projects in the Adopt- a-Park program. The Girl Scout Troop 6154 adopted the project of painting the City Centennial logo
for the Scout Hut. They presented the logo to the Community Services Commission on July
19, 2012.
Foothill Church Youth Group painted the backstops at Lobb Field and refurbished the barbeques in Finkbiner Park. Girl Scout Troop 8894 has adopted Willow Springs Park doing
clean-up in the park on an ongoing basis; and the Meacham Family has adopted the WrenMeacham Trail Head and Parking lot doing ongoing clean-up and maintenance at that site.
Lastly, Cub Scout Pack 457 has just been approved for the adoption of South Hills Park,
doing clean-up on a quarterly basis.

write. We provide free, one-to-one tutoring for English-speaking adults who want to
improve their reading, writing or spelling skills. If you would like to give another person

The Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation
announced their finalists for the 2012 Business Friendly City Competition
for cities in Los Angeles County, with populations under 60,000. In August
Glendora, along with the cities of Commerce, Duarte, El Segundo and La
Mirada, was named among the contenders for the prestigious award.
The Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation
(LAEDC) is known as the region’s premier economic development leadership organization. LAEDC is a private, non-profit organization established in 1981 with the mission to attract, retain and grow business and jobs
for the Los Angeles region. Since 1996 the LAEDC has helped to retain
or attract over 178,000 jobs with an estimated labor income, including
wages and benefits, of $10.8 billion.
The finalists for the “business-friendly” award program were selected
based on the following criteria:
• Demonstrated commitment to economic development as a priority
• Excellence in programs and services designed to facilitate
business entry, expansion, and retention
• Economic development activity over the past three years
• Competitive business tax rates and fee structures
• Availability of economic incentives
• Effective communication with and about business clients
“We are honored to have been named a finalist, which highlights the
many activities and policies we believe have helped foster a vibrant commercial base within Glendora”, said Glendora City Manager Chris Jeffers.
“With the recognition by LAEDC, it validates the effort of so many individuals from our Council, the BID, Glendora Chamber of Commerce, front
line staff and the many small business operators that have decided to call
Glendora home.”
LAEDC will announce the overall winner at its 17th Annual Eddy
Awards on Thursday, November 8th. The Eddy Awards have become the
most important economic development award program in the state of
California.

Opera Talks Return to the
Glendora Public Library
Glendora’s library community volunteers, the Glendora Public Library and the Glendora Public
Library Friends Foundation are pleased to partner with the LA Opera to present a series of Opera
Talks – interactive presentations led by members of LA Opera’s Speaker’s Bureau, a team of trained
volunteer experts. Each Opera Talk will be an insightful talk that will address the history, literature,
philosophy and fine arts within the context of opera.
The first “Opera Talk” will be Saturday, November 10 at 2:00 pm in the Bidwell Forum. It will
highlight the classic and beloved opera Madam Butterfly by Giacomo Puccini and conducted by
Grant Gershon. This opera is about a love that knows no boundaries and goes horribly wrong in a
fateful meeting of East and West. What begins as an idyllic liaison in an enchanting land of cherry
blossoms turns into the heartbreaking tragedy of an abandoned bride forced to make an excruciating decision.
The second “Opera Talk” will be Saturday, March 16 at 2:00 pm in the Bidwell Forum. It will
highlight the Flying Dutchman by Richard Wagner and conducted by James Conlon. The legend of
the ghostly ship condemned to wander the oceans forever has fascinated opera lovers-and more
recently movie lovers-for hundreds of years. An enthralling score, illuminated by striking stage
imagery, power and a thrilling journey into an unsettling, mythic world where a tormented spirit
seeks true love as his redemption.
The third “Opera Talk” will be Saturday, May 4 at 2:00 pm in the Bidwell Forum. It will focus
on the Behind the Scenes at the Opera. Opera is not just magnificent music, dance and theater with
astounding sets on a beautiful stage; opera can sweep you away to foreign lands, take you back in
time, dazzle you with pageantry and bring history to life. It is literature, social studies, cultural
diversity, multiple languages and most of all, it is exciting! We will explore the world of opera,
behind the curtain.
This program is made possible by Glendora’s community members who volunteered to coordinate these Opera Talks, the Glendora Public Library and the Glendora Public Library Friends
Foundation.

Memorial to
Break Ground
It’s official—the memorial construction is underway.
After rejecting two shipments of granite due to imperfections and tiny cracks, an acceptable shipment was finally
received so that engravers could begin their work, according to officials of the Glendora War Memorial Committee.
Started in early 2009, a group of community members
came together to develop a single and inclusive memorial
that would recognize all service men and women from
Glendora who gave the ultimate sacrifice – their life – to the
service of a grateful nation. To kick off the effort, the City
Council donated the land for the monument along with
funds to improve walkways in and around the location
where it would be built.
The goal of the Memorial Committee was simple—to
raise nearly $140,000 in donations or volunteer work to
make this a true community effort—and over the course of
three years the fundraising has proven to be just that.
Most donations have been small monetary in nature. Yet,
according to the Committee, the stories behind those donations have reflected a much larger desire to recognize our
Glendora Heroes. “We have received many memorable
contributions during this time. There are stories of a 10year old taking Christmas money given by his grandparents
to donate to the memorial fund; the Pennies for Patriots
program where school kids from GUSD collected pennies;
the 3rd grade class of Foothill Christian School sponsored
a fundraising event; and the support given by Project
Glendora Yellow Ribbon Committee by taking the fundraising task under their wing and staffing booths at almost
every city event seeking donations from the attending public”, said City Manager Chris Jeffers. “This has been a
remarkable display of involvement, which has been difficult in such a trying economic time; yet the community has
been so wonderful in staying motivated to achieve this
goal.”
Construction is scheduled to begin in early October,
starting with trenching and underground electrical work.
The total construction period is approximately 3 ? months.
“The time is extended because we are using a number of
volunteers with construction trade, and working around
their varying schedules”, said Public Works Director Dave
Davies. “The length of time is secondary to involving the
public in this very special project. The Committee felt the
few extra weeks were well worth making this a real community effort.”
Officials are looking at a late January or early February
dedication of the monument. “This will be a time of bringing the community together to thank everyone involved for
their participation, and allowing them to pay tribute and
show gratitude to its fallen heroes.” said Jeffers.

the Stars & Stripes ($1,500 -$4,999), Old Glory ($5,000 $7,499) or Patriot ($7,500 and over). Or you can buy a
brick for $200 and have your name or name of a loved one

The Christmas Savings Card can also be printed from an email being sent to more than 60,000 subscribers.

Billen owned his first business, a convenience store in
Oregon, at age 21. Smoke Stop’s specialty of tobacco products is much easier to manage, he says, than the wide variety
of items stocking convenience store shelves. “The inventory
here makes the pace much easier,” he said. It allows more
time to build relationships with his customers, many of
whom are enjoying hookahs, the socializing experience of
smoking flavored tobaccos through water pipes. Gleaming
wood-and-glass cases displaying a wide variety of hookahs
line one wall of the store. “There are a lot of people using
hookahs in this area. They enjoy the fruit-flavored tobaccos
and experiment by mixing different flavors,” he said.
Brother Ricky Billen works at the store, too. “In our family, that’s how we stick together,” Dally Billen said with a
smile.

Parking Facility Improvement
The Community Services and Public Works Departments have been working
cooperatively towards the rehabilitation and improvement of the current parking
lot at the corners of Cullen and Mt. View Avenues. Many refer to this parking lot
as the Episcopal churches parking lot; however, it is a city owned facility that will
be renovated to make it more friendly and accessible for all users.
The project will include repaving, lighting improvements, bus shelters and new
landscaping. The purpose of this renovation is to use the area as the designated
Metrolink shuttle parking lot to free up additional parking spaces adjacent to the
La Fetra Senior Center. Although the parking lot is currently used as the designated area for participants of senior trips and excursions, the renovated lot with its
additional lighting features will make it safer for the patrons.
The project is anticipated to begin in the Fall of 2012. Funding for this project
comes from the use of AQMD, AB2766 subvention funds and there is no impact
to the general fund.

saw an opportunity to open her own shop – Muse, located at 107 W. Foothill Blvd.

extensions, highlights, Brazilian Blowout, perms, chemical relaxation, color correction, updos and more.
During those 18 years, Singh-Shoemaker explained, “I had worked for so many
other people that I’ve learned what I wanted to do. I felt their businesses could be
so much more, and my clientele pushed me to go out on my own with those ideas.

“I get the decor and he changes the paintings out often to keep it fresh,” she explained. In fact, SinghShoemaker has hosted an art night from Salamon, who invited his clients to learn about the salon. The networking resulted in new Muse customers and new patrons for Salamon.

“Trick or Treat in the Library” Children come dressed in costume to Storytime
and afterward they will go trick-or-treating in the Library.
Join the Library and community partners in the months of September, October
and November in film showings, lectures and discussion groups inspired by this
tale of Japanese detention camp life during World War II.

“Teacher Education Program” All are welcome to attend this teacher education program bringing history to life. The Teacher Education Department will
explore how to use Farewell to Manzanar in the classroom for a variety of age
groups and explore supplementary materials to assist students in learning about the
internment camps. APU Library Special Collections will have a display of artifacts
and library materials relating to the internment of Japanese Americans.

“Super 7 Day Sale” Come to the library starting on Saturday morning and
browse the sale tables for bargains on Coffee Table & Art books.

“Japanese American National Museum” A bus trip to the Japanese American

“Cover to Cover” In-N-Out Burger’s Reading Incentive program for children

The Glendora Village annual Holiday Stroll will be held
Friday, November 16th. The evening features strolling carolers, old-fashioned carriage rides and a special visit by Santa
Claus arriving on a historic fire truck.

Everyone is invited to kick off their holiday celebrations at this
year’s event along Glendora Avenue between Foothill
Boulevard and Bennett Avenue. The evening begins at 6
p.m. when Glendora city officials light the Village’s Christmas
tree and introduce Santa Claus to young and old alike.
Holiday Stroll visitors will also get a chance to start their holiday shopping at Village shops while
enjoying singers form Azusa Pacific University who will perform carols throughout the Village.
The Holiday Stroll is presented by the Glendora Village Business Improvement District. For more
