We’ve been nestled in the heart of the Wild Coast for many years
now, so we can tell you plenty about all the treasures you and your
family will discover here. There are the expected things, of course
– charming bungalows that feel like home, our sumptuous variety
of freshly prepared home-cooked food, and more outdoor activities
than you’ll find time for.

rusks as you watch the morning mist brushing the water’s surface.
Falling asleep with an old paperback on your chest and salt in your
hair. Seeing a Fish Eagle swoop low over the estuary, or hearing

indigenous flora, on a green hillside providing more view than
most eyes can take in. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself

beyond, while birds forage and sing in the bushes around you.

Of course, you may want to be out much of every day. You could
spend the whole time dozing by our riverside pool, or hanging out
at Basil’s Bar, where darts, snooker and tall stories will make you
feel like a regular in no time. In our lofted hillside spa we’re lucky
enough to have dedicated, professional therapists, if you want
your city stress to be massaged away – to the soundtrack of
nothing but breakers and bird calls. Or you might find relaxation in
other ways; in the gym, on the courts or on a long amble down
our pristine beach; as rich in shore life as most coastlines
used to be. For parents in need of a break, our
dedicated caregivers are always on hand, so
leave the little ones with us and feel free to
relive your early days of romance.

BRING A HEALTHY APPETITE
All meals are fully inclusive. And what’s more, we’re not shy with
our portions - the bigger the better.
Kick off the day with an unhurried River Breakfast as you loosely
plan out another day filled with the magical sights and sounds of
the Wild Coast. Later on, sample our lunch and dinner menus,
which offer versatile meat dishes, fish so fresh it melts in your
mouth and crackingly good salads and veggies.
Oh, and feel free to make requests. Like everything else, our menu
is always flexible and our chefs are more than happy to try and
meet your individual needs.

If you’re celebrating something special (what is it about the Wild Coast
that makes so many people decide to “pop the question”?), you
can always reserve the riverside gazebo for a private get-together.
It’s perched on stilts above the clear, calm waters of our river.
Or try something more “uptown”, by requesting a private evening
in the Green Door Wine Cellar, where only you, your party and a
personal waiter will disturb the peaceful atmosphere as you tell tall
tales over a selection of the finest wines from our platinum awardwinning wine list.
At Umngazi, relaxed dining experiences will form the heart of your
very special coastal getaway. If you find yourself settling into your
chair and losing all track of the time, then we’ll know our chefs
are doing their job. It’s second nature for our visitors to sit
around the tables long after another unforgettable day to
recount stories of fun, adventure and exhilaration.

SEE YOU SOON
FLY. Board our comfortable 14-seater aircraft at Durban’s
Virginia Airport. At Port St Johns’ airstrip you’ll be greeted
by our friendly hosts and a cool refresher. S.A. Airlink also offers daily
flights from Johannesburg’s O.R. Tambo International Airport, direct to
Mthatha. Transfer arrangements to Umngazi can be made for you.
OR DRIVE. From the Cape, take the N2 North to Mthatha. Once there,
take the Port St Johns turn-off; it’s hard to miss. Drive for 90km
through lush valleys and gentle hills until you see the Umngazi sign.
From KwaZulu-Natal, head south past Port Edward to Bizana and
then to Port St Johns. From Gauteng or the Free State, continue past
Kokstad and turn left 15km later onto the R61 towards Port St Johns.
