OUR LOCAL BEST
LACHLAN BROWN SHINES AT ADELAIDE CUP
By Jen Halman
Although Fernando Bale was the main attraction at the 2015
Adelaide Cup another great story is local boy Lachlan Brown,
who at only 21 months of age placed second in the Final.
The young gun is named after father Lochinvar Marlow and
mother Liza Brown. Lochie is trained by Barossa native
Paula Hearnden. Paula had been living on Kangaroo Island
but returned to Angaston three years ago to take over the
“Long Gully” greyhounds after her father passed away. Paula
became involved in the sport through her father who trained as
a hobby for ten years.
Going into the Cup heats Lachlan Brown had only raced 5
times which included an Angle Park Maiden placing over
the 515m and then 4 wins in succession over the 400m
at Gawler. He came out in the heats at headquarters on
October 1st and ran a flying 29.83 when he was able to
lead throughout. The win gave him a spot in the Cup Final
where he was gallant in defeat behind superstar Fernando
Bale, running a personal best time of 29.77. With seven starts
resulting in five wins and two placings we can’t wait to see what
the future holds for Lochie.
Lachlan Brown and Paula Hearnden heading to the
boxes at the Adelaide Cup Final
Paula is also excited about some Long Gully Libby pups she is currently breaking in who she hopes will develop
nicely on the track in the coming months. She loves seeing a young pup come through and show its potential
and she has certainly seen that with Lachlan Brown. Paula’s training routine involves continuing to do what her
dad taught her: keep them fit and healthy. In regards to the recent negativity surrounding our industry, she tries to
ignore the news. She knows she does the right thing and believes the majority of the participants do. Like all of
us, Paula hopes greyhound racing will come out the other side a bigger and better industry.

FERNANDO BALE
BECOMES WORLD’S
FIRST MILLION DOLLAR
GREYHOUND
By Shaun Mathieson
Last Friday night at Angle Park history was made when champion sprinter Fernando Bale became the first
greyhound to break through the $1 million dollar mark in prizemoney when he blew away a strong Group 1
Adelaide Cup field leaving them lamenting in his wake.
With history in the making there was an air of confidence as the superstar made his way to the boxes in front
of a large vocal crowd on a beautiful night in Adelaide. The Dailly camp seemed to absorb the pressure and
take it in their stride even with owner Paul Wheeler making the trip to the festival state. He was on hand to
witness one of the most brilliant performances seen on the Angle Park circuit with Fernando Bale running a
brilliant 29.20 in winning by over 5 lengths.
Again, he wasn’t super out of the boxes however his drive to the first turn saw him race to the front and from
there he waved goodbye to the chasing pack. The large crowd was in awe of the champion, clapping mid
race as he extended his lead. Lachlan Brown for SA did a terrific job to keep close to the champ but faded
a little in the run to the line. At only his 7th career start he held on gamely for local trainer Paula Hearnden
giving her one of the biggest thrills she has had in greyhound racing. Kayda Shae battled on well for Kelly
Bravo to run another Group placing in finishing third but there was no stopping Fernando Bale.
His winning time ranks him in the top 5 greyhounds that have competed at Angle Park and took his
prizemoney to $1,006,110 which sits him atop the tree in prizemoney won anywhere in the world. Adelaide
saw one of the all-time greats last Friday create history in Fernando Bale and for that we thank the Dailly
camp and owner Paul Wheeler and wish them every bit of success in the future.

UPDATE

SLIPPING TRACK
The slipping track has been in operation for several
weeks now and GRSA staff have received many
positive comments regarding the presentation of the
track. Usage has been solid, with 32 trainers now
having registered for after-hours access with GRSA
administration.
The maintenance team is continuing to monitor the
issue of small stones appearing on the track, however it
does not appear to be a major issue. Over the coming
week a water tap will be positioned immediately outside
the main access gate for greyhounds after they have
been exercised on the track.
A number of improvements are being investigated
including:
• A second access gate near the greyhound empty yard
• A hand operated lure system (the AGRC are exploring
options)
• Additional sand to reduce the gradient of the dip in the
middle of the track
The new empty yard came into operation on Adelaide
Cup night and will now be used for all other race
meetings and trial sessions.
ANGLE PARK KENNEL HOUSE
Planning is underway for the final stage of the Angle
Park kennel house refurbishment. Over the past few
months the kennel house has received a minor facelift
with replacement of the roof, repair and painting of the
walls and installation of LED lighting.
The final stage will involve the removal of carpet in the
control area and recoating of the entire floor in an epoxy
non-slip coating. This will be followed by new stainless
steel kennel cages throughout. It is anticipated that the
project will commence in late November and will require
the transfer of Angle Park race meetings to other venues
to allow a window of 5-6 days to undertake the work.
GRSA is also continuing to investigate a solution
to ensure cold water is delivered to the greyhound
10 Kennel Capers edition031
wash bays on hot race days. A solution is proving to
be difficult to identify at a reasonable cost, however
management is committed to installing a solution within
the next few weeks.
MOUNT GAMBIER IRRIGATION SYSTEM
The Mount Gambier Club has commenced installation
of an automated track irrigation system and associated
water storage infrastructure. The system will be based
on similar systems around the country and will improve
the Club’s ability to maintain moisture levels in the track,
particularly over the warmer summer months.
In addition to the irrigation system, representatives of
the Angle Park maintenance team will visit the Club to
provide advice and onsite training on track preparation
and use of the new watering system. This training is
expected to occur at some point in November and aims
to ensure the best quality appearance, consistency and
safety of the racing surface.
MCQUEEN’S TAVERN GENERAL
FRONTAGE
Participants may have noticed landscaping works
undertaken at the front of McQueen’s Tavern to improve
the overall appearance of the venue. Garden beds have
been created and some established trees have been
planted, and whilst the impact of these improvements
will not be noticeable in the short term, they will
dramatically improve the aesthetics of the venue in the
long term.
ADELAIDE CUP
A final note of congratulations to the GRSA maintenance
team on how Angle Park was presented on Adelaide
Cup night. A lot of hard work has gone on behind the
scenes by the entire team to get the venue looking so
sharp, ably led by new Head of Industry Maintenance
Terry Winder. A special mention to David Rundle who
once again presented a safe and consistent racing
surface throughout the Derby, Oaks and Cup series’.

HOT WEATHER POLICY
A reminder to trainers with the hot weather coming to
make sure they are aware of the updated conditions
relating to the Hot Weather Policy:
actual temperature ultimately exceeds 40˚C, a decision
about the cancellation or abandonment of the meeting
will rest with the Integrity and Standards Manager and the
Steward in Charge who will take into account the advice
of the on-course Veterinarian.
TAB MEETINGS – Forecast Exceeds 40˚C
NON-TAB MEETINGS – Forecast Exceeds 40˚C
Consideration will always be given to changing meetings
to more suitable timeslots. If it is not possible to facilitate
such a transfer within a reasonable timeframe, Day and
Twilight meetings for which the projected temperature
exceeds 40˚C at 8:00am on the morning of the scheduled
event will automatically be cancelled at that time. On
the basis of an extreme hot weather forecast, a decision
may be made prior to that time to cancel at the absolute
discretion of the Integrity and Standards Manager.
Where the projected temperature exceeds 40˚C at
5:00pm on the Friday preceding the affected event,
it will automatically be cancelled at that time. On the
basis of an extreme hot weather forecast, a decision
may be made prior to that time to cancel at the absolute
discretion of the Integrity and Standards Manager.
Night meetings on these days will continue as scheduled
but may be called off, delayed, cancelled or abandoned
at the discretion of the Integrity and Standards Manager
and the Steward in Charge who will take into account the
advice of the on-course Veterinarian.
COURSING MEETINGS – Forecast Exceeds 30˚C
In noting that Coursing involves multiple runs on the same
day, when the projected temperature exceeds 30˚C at
5:00pm on the Friday preceding the affected event, it will
automatically be cancelled at that time. On the basis of a
sufficiently hot weather forecast, a decision may be made
prior to that time to cancel at the absolute discretion of
the Integrity and Standards Manager.

meeting proceeds in accordance with this policy, but the

SCRATCHING WITHOUT PENALTY
ALL greyhounds nominated by the one trainer to be
scratched from meeting:
Trainers who have greyhounds engaged for racing on
projected hot weather days – especially if they do not
have air-conditioned transport facilities – may apply to
scratch all of their runners without penalty. The following
conditions apply:
• The forecast for the venue’s regional centre must be
38˚C or higher at the time of scratching
• Applications to scratch all nominated greyhounds
from the same trainer under this policy must be made
prior to the official scratching time. If a greyhound is
withdrawn after that time the normal 10 day penalty
will apply.
• Trainers cannot scratch their greyhounds selectively
– all runners for that trainer must be withdrawn
(excludes greyhounds on GRSA’s official Heat Stress
Register)
• The temperature will be sourced from Weatherzone
– www.weatherzone.com.au – and will link venues to
regional centres in accordance with the following:
GRSA VENUE
CORRESPONDING
REGIONAL CENTRE
This policy will be applied regardless of whether the
meeting in question is a Day, Twilight or Night meeting.
It will also be considered a breach of this policy for
a greyhound listed on the register to trial when the
forecasted temperature is 38 degrees or higher for the
corresponding regional centre on that day other than for
morning trial sessions.
CANCELLATION OF RACE MEETING OR TRIAL
SESSION
GRSA will make every endeavour to announce any
cancellation or rescheduling of a race meeting by 8:00am
that morning via the industry text service and any other
vehicles that it deems appropriate. Radio TAB will be
advised of any relevant information.
Trials may be cancelled at any time up until 4 hours prior
to the scheduled commencement of the trial session. As
with race meetings, the cancellation of a trial session will
be notified by industry text and any other appropriate
vehicles.

confirming that the greyhound suffers from heat stress
when racing or trialling in hot weather must be provided
by the greyhound’s trainer. That certification must be
received by GRSA in advance of the close of nominations
for a given meeting for it to be eligible for selective
scratching from that or any subsequent meetings due to
hot weather.
Any greyhound on the register which is nominated
for a meeting in relation to which the maximum
predicted temperature is 38 degrees or higher for the
corresponding regional centre as at the official scratching
time will automatically be scratched from the meeting by
GRSA. Under such circumstances, no penalty will be
applied to the greyhound as a result of that scratching.

GREYHOUND PRODUCTS
23rd of September 2015
Important Notice: Voluntary Recall of Sprinter Gold® Results Plus™
Attention: Australian Greyhound Trainers and Owners
As you may be aware, there are new Racing Rules defining a limit to the level of cobalt in
the urine of racing greyhounds. We wish to notify all greyhound trainers that Sprinter
Gold® Results Plus™ contains cobalt, as this supplement is a comprehensive vitamin and
trace-mineral formulation for racing greyhounds.
Sprinter Gold® Greyhound Products has not received indication that supplementation of
Results Plus™ would exceed the new limit for cobalt excretion in greyhounds, but there is
uncertainty about the maximum level of oral cobalt dosage under the latest regulations.
Therefore, as many trainers have expressed concerns about supplements containing cobalt,
we have decided to recall Sprinter Gold® Results Plus.
We ask you to cease using the supplement and contact us on Freecall 1800 112 227 to
arrange return of any size pack of Results Plus™ for a full refund at the recommended retail
price of your specific pack size. We will accept all full or partly used packs of Results
Plus™ during this recall period. Please do not give the recalled Results Plus™ to your
greyhounds.
We are formulating a new supplement without cobalt to replace the recalled Results Plus™
and you may request a sample pack of this new product as a replacement. All other Sprinter
Gold products for racing greyhounds do not contain cobalt and are not affected by this recall.

A FAMILY
NEWS
Passion
By Jen Halman
16 Kennel Capers edition031
C
ameron Butcher purchased his first pup from Howard
Ashton in 1964 after he saw greyhounds race at
Waterloo Corner earlier that year. He got his second
greyhound, a 12 month old, after paying 25 pound
to a lad who was getting married and short on funds.
Pivotoff was his name and with little experience won his first race.
Cameron’s father became hooked and started breeding after
purchasing Pivotoff’s Mother. One of her offspring, Mistoff, was
Greyhound of the Year and Trevor Butcher named Trainer of the
Year. Then came Tatachilla, a good dog in his time.
Cameron and his wife Yvonne purchased a farm at Hope Forest
in 1970 and continued to help Trevor and rear pups. They moved
to Meningie in 1988 and no longer had time for greyhounds, but in
2009 decided to get a pup. They had few winners in Mr Menance
and Alana Blues and they then purchased two pups from Alan
McCulloch’s Litttle Looper Line. Hope’s Up was produced, their best
dog to date. Cam and Yvonne have had good dogs from the line.
Worm Burner and She’s A Looper are currently showing something
special and have great hopes.
The Butchers free run their dogs in a 30 acre paddock daily and
hand slip between races. They don’t use a walking machine as
the dogs seem to do well free running. Life is hectic on the farm
at times with cattle, sheep and general farm management, but
Cameron is always seen on the quad bike am and pm keeping an
eye on the dogs while they are exercising.
Karen and Sean lived in a shed on their
block - they built kennels before they built
their house!
Daughter-in-law Karen Butcher became interested when Cameron
and Yvonne got involved again in 2009. Karen and husband
Sean sold their house in Coromandel Valley and bought five
acres in Strathalbyn in January 2011 so that they could get into
greyhounds more seriously. Cameron bought Karen and Sean
their very first puppy and shortly after they bought themselves a
second pup. They increased to owning six dogs and had some
success, but none of them were champions. In 2013, due to family
commitments and time constraints, Cameron started training
Karen’s dogs and took on Sidney’s Shadow as an 18 month old
who went on to be very successful and won SA Bred Greyhound
of the Year for 2014. She has been Karen’s best dog so far. She
has retired now and is part of the family as a pet, but they plan to
breed from her soon. Karen is currently in the process of getting her
breeders licence.
Although Karen is not currently training any dogs, they own six
pups that Cameron and Yvonne have bred themselves, and two of
them are from the same Dam as Sidney’s Shadow. The Butcher’s
are all excited to see how they progress.
It has been a hard year in the media for racing. The Butcher’s
don’t think live baiting has any place in the sport and feel those
that choose to use live bait deserve to have the full force of the law
come down on them (and be banned for life).
Karen’s eleven year old daughter wrote a persuasive writing
piece for a school assignment on ‘Keep Greyhound Racing Alive’
(see page 26), so the sport is definitely something the family is
passionate about.
“The Four Corners story made me feel sick
to my stomach. And then the aftermath
was frustrating because you have the public
who, before they saw this story, had no
knowledge of greyhound racing as a sport,
but all of a sudden are being vocal about
banning racing. They think that because
a handful of trainers interstate were doing
the wrong thing, that all trainers must be
involved. When in actual fact, they have no
clue about the industry and how trainers
actually care for their dogs.”

opportunity to recover some of their expenditure and the
breeder greater opportunity to receive breeder bonuses.
The catalogue has been released and it’s now just waiting
in anticipation for our greyhound Auction to begin on
Sunday 25th October with around 87 lots to be sold.
The Main race series stakes ($16,000, $5,000, $2,500,
unpl $500). Auction Nominator bonuses for main race
($3,500, $2,500, $1,500).
Vendors will be arriving between 8.30am and 9.30am to
be checked in. Viewing will begin at 10.30am with the
Auction due to start at 12.00pm.
Greyhounds purchased through the auction that are not
SA Bred will be allowed the same grading exemptions
in regards to Grade 6 and Juvenile races as locally
bred greyhounds. The extra conditions for Interstate
greyhounds only refer to a grading advantage and have
no bearing on the SA Bred pool of money.
The AGRC have organised a barbeque (Vietnam Veterans)
from around 10.30am for vendors and purchasers with
the GRSA office also open around this time. There will
be Rearers and Trainers on hand to assist those people
requiring a little extra assistance with their purchase and we
thank the AGRC committee for working hard to get these
people on hand.
Ray Fewings will be the Auctioneer on the day.
There is a requirement for anyone wishing to bid on a
greyhound, including buybacks, that they are registered
before the Auction begins on Sunday 25th October.
RUFF STATE CONTINUES TO WIN FROM
THE 2014 AUCTION SERIES
Our first Auction was conducted last year in 8 years
and already the Ken Gill trained Ruff State is showing
plenty of ability. He is out of Elite State x Lektra Snap
and was bought through the sale for $2,800. He has
already repaid his connections by winning 5 of his 7 starts
including 2 placings and prizemoney of $3,630. We wish
them continued success in the future.
In an added bonus Ray Borda from Macro Meats has
sponsored the auction and has provided 19 x $250
vouchers to entice bidders to the auction and to be used
on the purchase price (buy backs are excluded from
this promotion). There will be 9 drawn tonight with the
remaining 10 drawn on Thursday 22nd October.
LOWER GRADE FEATURE EVENTS
By registering for the Auction this will also put you in the
draw for the vouchers.
The next series will be in November with a Grade 6 series
over 515m held on Thursday 5th and 12th November.
Auction on the Day and Race conditions–

WEDNESDAYS ON SKY 1 IN
OCTOBER
In October our Angle Park Wednesday
meetings will be broadcast on Sky
Racing 1. This was the same as last
season and should continue at least
until January.
GREYHOUND OF THE
MONTH – SEPTEMBER
Greyhound of the Month for September
was the Cameron Butcher trained
Worm Burner who had a terrific month
of racing winning 4 of his 5 starts
highlighted by his heat and final win of
the Classic 2015 Prelude (1) series, he
just edged out Springvale Clint who was
undefeated in his 6 starts for the month.
The son of Oaks Road and Little Looper
started the month off in brilliant fashion
with a sizzling 29.93 win in Grade 6
company before being unplaced in a
heat of the Group 3 SA Derby.
At his next start he again impressed with a slick 29.80
win at headquarters before starting a short priced
favourite for the 2015 Classic Prelude (1) series. In the
heats he just arrived in time to take the prize and again in
the final he was able to overcome trouble and win by the
shortest of margins in a solid 30.02.
The MichaelKris Real Estate Gawler Gold Cup carnival
will also be run over three meetings. The carnival will
kick off on Friday 23rd October with $1,025 heats of the
Gawler Sprint Classic for open 400m greyhounds and
$1,070 heats of the Gawler Stayers Cup for open 643m
greyhounds. Both finals worth $6,875 will be run on
Gawler Gold Cup night (1st November).
At the end of the month Worm Burner won 7 races from
his 9 lifetime starts and prizemoney over $8,000.
Nominations for these events close on Monday 19th
October with GRSA at 9am
RUN OF THE MONTH – SEPTEMBER
On Tuesday 27th October the $2,450 heats for the Group
3 MichaelKris Real Estate Gawler Gold Cup will be run
over the 531m. The meeting will be run as a day meeting
with normal Tuesday times.
The Run of the Month for September was won by She’s A
Looper for trainer Cameron Butcher.
On the 21st September at Angle Park, She’s A Looper
was having her 2nd lifetime start in the final of a Maiden
series over the 515m. The daughter of Oaks Road and
Little Looper began nicely to find the front in a handy
4.52 lead time however from there she carved out brilliant
sectionals running 16.91 to the back and then home in
12.71 running a sizzling 29.62 in winning by 13 lengths.
2015 NOVEMBER GAWLER GOLD CUP
The February edition of the Gawler Gold Cup was run
with Gun McBain taking out the Group 3 feature due to
the redevelopment of the new facility. For the second time
this year the Gawler Cup will be run with a new major
sponsor in MichaelKris Real Estate. It is great for the club
to not only have them on board for their Group 3 series
but also permanent signage on the semaphore board.
Nominations for these events close on Thursday 22nd
October with GRSA at 9am
The Group 3 final will be run on Sunday twilight 1st
November worth $36,000 in prizemoney with the winner
to receive $25,000. Including the Gawler Sprint Classic
and Gawler Stayers Cup there will be a Consolation for
the Gawler Gold Cup worth $3,580 and the Kingsford
Hotel Grade 6 over 531m. We will also have the SA
Country Cup run on this night with greyhounds that have
qualified at Port Augusta, Mt Gambier, Strathalbyn and
Gawler Prov2 worth $7,375.
Nominations for this meeting close on Wednesday 28th
October with GRSA at 9am
Bookmaker Peter Damarell will be oncourse for both the
heat and final night providing his service for the patrons in
attendance.

The GOTBA will present their Annual Awards at Angle
Park on Thursday 5th November. To be presented will be
the SA Coursing Greyhound of the Year (Heliski for trainer
Rolland Parry) and the Coursing Trainer of the Year (Ray
Fewings). Also featuring on the night will be a Free For All
event for greyhounds which competed at Virginia during
2015. This race will be graded on circle form. The race
is supported by the GOTBA and carries prizemoney of
$4,415.
Nominations close with GRSA at 9.00am on Monday 2nd
November
ANGLE PARK SLIPPING TRACK
Works are completed on the Angle Park slipping track
and participant access has been permitted. A newly
defined empty out area is ready at the southern end of
the trainer’s car park to be used by trainers during race
days and trial sessions, and for participants frequenting
the slipping track.
It is hoped that the slipping track will assist metropolitan
trainers for many years to come and provide a
replacement for previously available public slipping tracks
around inner Adelaide. GRSA will continue to focus on
providing easily accessible and well maintained training
and trialling infrastructure for participants.
With access to the Slipping Track being restricted the
side access gate to the Trainers Car Park will be locked
outside of normal business hours which will mean no
access to the out of hours nominations box.
PORT AUGUSTA ON MELBOURNE
CUP DAY
The Port Augusta Greyhound Racing Club will again have
a Non TAB meeting on Melbourne Cup Day Tuesday
3rd November. This is a great day for the Port Augusta
Club as they get terrific numbers to their meeting on the
first Tuesday in November. The meeting will feature a
Melbourne Cup Best 8 Feature over the 447m.
The next Port Augusta meeting will be held on Saturday
24th October which sees a $1,025 Heat of the Country
Cup over 512m
The racing program starts at 1.00pm at Chinnery Park,
Port Augusta West.

TOP GUN FIELD ANNOUNCED
Newly-crowned million-dollar chaser Fernando Bale
headlines a star-studded group of greyhounds who will
line up in the $215,000 Group 1 Sky Racing Topgun over
525 metres at The Meadows on October 24.
The Andrea Dailly-trained star will start a short-priced
favourite to win his eighth Group 1 race of the year
and second at The Meadows after another devastating
display to take out the Adelaide Cup last week. To
showcase the quality of this year’s Group 1 Sky Racing
Topgun, the eight finalists have combined for a total of
over $2.8 million in prizemoney.
The box draws for the Group 1 Sky Racing Topgun and
the Group 2 Sky Racing Stayers Topgun will be held at
The Meadows this Saturday night (October 17)!
• Once a greyhound has qualified from a Qualifying
Heat, it is not eligible to compete at another
track in this series, unless there are insufficient
nominations to fill the field.
• Once qualified for the Country Cup Final the
greyhound will be ineligible for the Gawler Gold
Cup series, Gawler Sprint Classic and Gawler
Stayers Cup as these finals will be run on the
same night as the County Cup.

CHANGE IN PAPERWORK FOR
PRIZEMONEY
From 1st November 2015 the paperwork for directing
prizemoney will change. In the past the paperwork
refers to the owner directing where which account the
prizemoney goes. GRSA has had no option but to direct
all greyhounds owned by that person into their specific
account. From 1st November the paperwork will refer
to the greyhound so this will provide flexibility for each
owner to have different conditions (if required) for each
greyhound.
For example if an owner has 10 dogs with prizemoney all
going into the same account under the same conditions
then they only need to fill out one form naming all 10
greyhounds however if there are 10 different agreements
for these greyhounds then they will need to complete 10
different forms for each dog.
As previously advised it is up to the owner of the
greyhound to ensure prizemoney paperwork has been
lodged prior to the greyhound racing to ensure payment
is made correctly.
**All existing prizemoney accounts remain the same
unless directed by the owners and updated account
information is provided**
ANNUAL GRADING REVIEW MEETING
IN NOVEMBER
On November 6th GRSA will be conducting the Grading
Review Panel meeting. This review is conducted annually
and aims to provide a comprehensive and formalised
process with objectives being an improved grading
system, enhanced review of rules and policies, reduced
grading complaints and increased participant satisfaction
with the system.
The current panel will be asked to contribute to the review
at the meeting.
The panel is as follows –
Shaun Mathieson – Racing Manager GRSA
Matt Corby – CEO GRSA
Greg Barber – Grader GRSA
Dr. Chris Doyle – GRSA Board Industry Representative
Petar Jovanovic – Public Trainer
Neil Mann – Public Trainer
Anthony McLean – Public Trainer
John Vivian – Public Trainer
Vaun Gray – Involved in Wagering
Kim Johnstone – Public Trainer
Gavin Harris - Public Trainer
Prior to this meeting, agenda items will be sought by way
of industry consultation.
This will be by way of consultation sessions at meetings,
dealing specifically with grading items and also
correspondence from participants. Based on all the
information collected an agenda will be formulated in
late October and sent to the Grading Review Panel to be
discussed at the review.
INDUSTRY MEETINGS TO BE

HERE COMES HOT WEATHER-BE PREPARED
by Jane McNicholl
AS WE LOOK FORWARD TO WARM WEATHER, summer
barbeques and long evenings it is time to think about
caring for greyhounds in the heat. Now is the time to plan
for coping with very hot days to ensure your greyhounds
are not put at risk of heat stress or heat illness.
Dogs are particularly vulnerable to heat illness and
50% of affected dogs die. Heat illness may occur if a
dog’s temperature exceeds 41.5°C and the dog is not
immediately cooled. The average temperature recorded
in greyhounds, following hard exercise is 41°C, so
greyhounds are at high risk of heat illness. If a dog’s
temperature remains at or above 41.5°C for even short
periods, serious damage may occur: vital organs such as
the heart, liver and the lining of the intestine break down.
When such tissues are damaged, a dog will suffer from
internal haemmhorage and toxaemia and death will occur
24 to 48 hours later. It is important to realize that dogs may
not show effects of heat illness at the time of heat stress
but they may die later.
Following are strategies and suggestions to ensure the
health and welfare of dogs during summer.
KENNELS
1. Paint exteriors with heat reflective paints and install
insulation, at least under the roof, this will reduce the
heat load. In small kennels foam panels, batts or foil
can be readily installed by a handyman, just ensure
they are out of dog reach ! In large sheds, spray on
treatments may be an easier option.
2. Install an evaporative cooler or air conditioner if the
shed is fully enclosed. If lucky enough to have cheap
water, a soaker hose along the roof will reduce heat
gain and the effects can be enhanced with fans in the
shed.
DOGS
1. Ensure dogs have plenty of cool water all day. If a dog
is inclined to paddle, provide two water containers,
one fixed at dog head height to the fence and one
large, heavy one at ground level. Freeze water in large
blocks to leave in containers.
2. In yards, ensure drink water containers are shaded
all day, water soon heats up in the sun. Shade cloth
should be erected if trees do not provide shade
and sprinklers or soaker hoses can be used to cool
areas. Shells or troughs to paddle or lie in are also
appreciated by most dogs.
3. Large, dark coloured (black, blue and brindle) dogs
are more susceptible to heat than are small or light
coloured (fawn and mostly white) dogs so take
particular care of dark coloured dogs.
27 Kennel Capers edition031
EXERCISE
1. Aim to complete all exercise by 10am.
2. Do not gallop or trial dogs if the temperature is over
30°C, dogs start to feel the effects of heat when the
temperature reaches 30°C.
3. After strenuous exercise, the average greyhound’s
temperature is 41°C which is the equivalent of a
serious fever, it is essential to cool dogs down.
4. Hose dogs all over with water after exercise, scrape
off excess water and repeat hosing if the dog is
panting heavily. Cooling jackets may be applied.
5. Do not place hot, wet dogs in closed trailers:
temperature and humidity will rise to dangerous levels
very quickly.
TRANSPORT
1. Air conditioned vans provide the best option for
transporting dogs and are being used by many
trainers but they may not be practical for everyone.
2. Trailers should be constructed of insulated material
and provide plenty of ventilation through side vents
and roof spinners.
3. Front and rear vents should be opened any time a
trailer is parked but should not be open when the
vehicle is moving as they suck carbon monoxide
laden exhaust fumes into the trailer.
4. Cooling jackets may help keep dogs cool but some
brands only retain moisture for an hour, after which
they will cause dogs to heat up. Use of cooling
jackets will also increase the levels of humidity in a
trailer, which may increase the risk of heat illness.
RACING
1. Consider weather forecasts when planning
nominations and take into consideration the time of
day when transport will occur and if any dogs are
particularly susceptible to heat stress eg large, dark or
excitable dogs.
2. Be prepared to travel early or late to avoid the hottest
time of day, racetrack kennels are opened early on
hot days.
3. Take advantage of fans and cooling jackets to keep
dogs cool prior to racing and use cooling baths to
cool dogs after racing.
4. Leave dogs in cooled kennels for at least 30 minutes
after racing.
