COMPRESSION PACKINGS
Compression Packings
Attacking Costs from Both Ends
Drew Marine’s compression packings are designed to
minimize wear and damage to pumps and valves, thus
reducing your maintenance and replacement costs. Made
for maximum packing life, inventory lasts longer and outlays
for packing materials are also reduced.
nTop-Quality Yarns
The fibers in our packings are selected for superior
resistance to temperature, pressure and chemicals. They
are naturally resilient, providing an even sealing load for
excellent sealability.
nUnique Lubrication Technology
Applied with enhanced yarn processing systems, lubricants
penetrate every fiber for even distribution throughout the
body of the packings. The result is faster break-in for the
packing, and longer life.
nAdvanced Construction Systems
Strands of fiber run through the body of the packing in
AMERLOCK2 braid construction. In addition to preventing
unraveling in service, this proprietary method provides
maximum core integrity and resilience for easy packing
removal and adjustment. For better start-up and run-in
times, we use special yarn coating systems for lower
torque values and improved sealability – and hightemperature braid coats.

FITTING THE PACKINGS
Fitting the Packing
Ensuring a leak-tight packing with long-lasting service life first
requires selecting the correct packing for the application. It is
equally important to pack the stuffing box (gland) correctly before
the equipment is put back into service.

Figure 2
Right Angle Cut (90°)
Top View
Angle Cut (45°)
Figure 3

Wrong
1.Remove the gland follower.
2.Remove the worn packing using a packing extractor.
3.Clean the inside of the stuffing box and the shaft or spindle.
4.Inspect the worn packing, the surface condition of the shaft or
spindle, the alignment and the play in the bearings.
5. If the shaft surface is rough, irregular or damaged in any way,
or the shaft is running eccentrically because of worn bearings, make the necessary repairs before re-packing.
6. Check the packing section required by the formula:
Packing Section = Inner Diameter of Stuffing Box –
Outer Diameter of Shaft
2
To cut the rings:
1. Keep the packing clean. Use only as much as necessary to
cut each ring. Work on a clean surface.
2. Wind the packing one turn around the shaft or around a mandrel
of the same diameter (fig. 1). Cut through the overlap at 90° for
pump shaft or 45° for valve stem application to make the first
ring, ensuring clean cut (fig. 2). It is advisable to leave a small
clearance at the cut when assembling packings that stretch
appreciably under compression, or when packing certain
inadequately cooled stuffing boxes. This clearance will vary
with shaft diameter.
Approx. clearance (mm)
Up to 30
0.5
1. Slide the first ring to the bottom of the box using a tool of
suitable size and the gland follower. Press firmly into position.
2. Take the second ring. For vertical shafts or spindles, set the
butt joint at 90° clockwise from the first and press into position
on the first ring. Continue with each subsequent ring, making
sure that each is bedded down before adding the next. For
horizontal shafts or spindles, set butts alternately at 10 o’clock
and 2 o’clock positions.
3. When all rings are in the box, refit the gland follower
fingertight, which should now show 2/3 of its length
available for further adjustment.
For pumps–running in:
Right
To clean and prepare the gland for re-packing:
Shaft diameter (mm)
To fit the rings:
1. Start pump and allow an appreciable leak for up to 30
minutes if possible.
2. Tighten gland bolts 1/2 turn and wait for a minute or two,
checking to detect any overheating. On a hot fluid, the box
temperature should not rise more than 40°C (104°F) above
the fluid temperature. If there is any sign of overheating, back
off the bolts and wait before readjusting. Continue this process
until the leak is reduced to about 10 drops per minute.
3. Leave for a few hours, then adjust to a point where leakage
is minimized. Note: Time and care spent at this stage will be
amply repaid with long packing life.
For valves:
1. Bring gland follower down, and check continuously for free
spindle movement.
2. When spindle movement is restricted by the gland pressure,
back off the loading to free the spindle.
3. The valve is now ready to put into service.

3. Each successive ring can be cut in the same manner, or use
the first ring as a pattern. Be sure the packing is cut at the
correct angle to give an accurate closed butt joint in the ring
when fitted (fig. 3).

SHEET JOINTING PRODUCTS
Sheet Jointing Products for
Confidence and Choice
Dependable sealing from reliable, durable gaskets is crucial in
protecting the crew, the marine environment, and shipboard
equipment from the potential hazards associated with leaking pipes
and pump casings. Drew Marine’s sheet jointings are designed to
provide this reliability, with a selection that allows you to choose
what works best for your vessel.
AMERINE™ CFR JOINTING
Constructed using the most current technologies and materials,
our three AMERINE jointing products cover the full range of typical
shipboard gasketing applications. Substituting man-made fibers,
selected for their health and safety benefits, each is manufactured
in the same manner as compressed asbestos, which was the longtime industry standard. Our products have the same compressibility
and density. However, they also have more advanced properties,
including greater recoverability, and none of the hazards associated
with asbestos.
For certain general-service applications, some operators prefer
jointings made from familiar materials that have been traditionally
used. Look to Drew Marine to deliver cost-effective, conventional
jointings featuring the best-quality materials for each construction.

Selection and Installation
In selecting gasketing material for a flanged connection, there
are many variables that must be considered to ensure a proper
seal. In addition to the basic requirements for temperature,
pressure, fluid characteristics and application, these variables
include: the metallurgy of the flange, amount of bolt stretch,
the flange surface finish, and any additives in the fluid. Leakage
allowance is another important factor in view of increasingly strict
regulatory limits that now measure leakage in parts per million.
For satisfactory performance, remember:
• Gasket performance generally decreases as the material
thickness increases.
• Thicker materials also require increasing compressive loads.
• Proper bolting sequences must be followed to keep
compressive loads uniform.
• Applications near the upper end of a jointing’s temperature
and pressure working range may require a different
material. Our technical support staff can help you determine
the best product for those cases.
The primary factors influencing gasketing selection
are usually considered in the following order:
1.Temperature of the fluid at the gasketing joint
The number of suitable products decreases substantially as
temperatures rise above 95°C, with only a select few able
to handle temperatures approaching 540°C. A step-up to a
superior material is recommended when system operating
temperatures are near a particular gasket material’s maximum continuous operating temperature limit. Applications
with cryogenic temperatures also require careful gasketing
selection.
2.Application
The type of flange and bolts in the application determine the
compressive load available to seal the gasket. Use the gasket
dimensions to calculate the surface area being compressed.
Then use the number, size and grade of the bolts to calculate
the total available compressed load. This data has been
calculated and is available upon request for standard ANSI
raised face flanges. However, compressive stress available
on non-standard flanges must be individually calculated. Call
one of our representatives if you would like assistance.

3.Fluids
A relatively small number of fluids account for most of the
service requirements encountered in the marine industry. In
addition to the primary operating fluid, be sure to consider any
fluids used for system flushes and cleaning. We can assist
with identifying chemical compatibilities for all of our jointing
materials.
4.Internal pressure of the fluid at the gasketed joint
If severe and frequent pressure changes are involved, give
us the details so we can advise on alternative products.
Installation Procedures to Ensure a Satisfactory Joint:
• Center the gasket on the flange—especially critical for
raised face flanges.
• Check for satisfactory surface finish and flatness.
• Tighten bolts to compress gasket evenly by going from side
to side around the joint.
• Ensure correct initial loading by using a torque wrench and
well-lubricated fasteners with hardened flat washers.
• Tighten all bolts in one-third increments, according to proper
bolting patterns (see above figure).
• Re-torque 12 to 24 hours after start-up, whenever possible.
• Observe all applicable safety standards, including lockout/
tagout procedure.
• Never use liquid or metallic-based anti-stick or
lubricating compounds with the gaskets to limit risk of
premature failure.
