WELCOME TO PROVINCETOWN
Welcome to Provincetown, on the outermost edge of Cape Cod, where
you will find a place like no other: the first landing place of the pilgrims;
a Portuguese fishing village; America’s oldest and largest art colony; a
jazz, disco and drag show mecca; a safe-haven for creatives, innovators,
adventurers and outsiders; and now a site where inspired, inventive and
independent film is developed, fostered and presented to the world.
From June 17th to June 21st, the Provincetown Film Society will present its
17th annual showcase of the best in American and International independent film with more than 87 feature-length and short films and dozens of
parties, panel discussions and events. The defining honor of the Festival
is its “Filmmaker on the Edge Award,” honoring outstanding achievement,
innovation, and vision in filmmaking and given to a film artist whose
admirable body of work pushes the boundaries of the medium.
The Provincetown Film Society (PFS) which began as the Provincetown International Film Festival in 1999 is a non-profit arts organization dedicated
to making Provincetown – with its unique combination of art institutions,
culture, history and natural beauty – the global destination for creative
exploration in film.

CEO EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
The first film festival event I ever attended was a 1979 screening of
“The Marriage of Maria Braun” directed by Rainer Fassbinder. The
film would earn international acclaim for its young director at the
time. For me, it provided a first glimpse into the postwar milieu in
which my German mother came of age. Since then, I have never
doubted the core relevance of film festivals as a means to connect
us with stories outside of the mainstream that either mirror our own
experiences or transport us into the unique experiences of others.
The alchemy required in assembling a cohesive program of more
than 87 feature-length and short films that speak to our very own
diverse community, is nothing short of a miracle orchestrated by
founding Artistic Director Connie White, Director of Programming
Andrew Peterson, Senior Programmer Lisa Viola and a welcome new
addition to the team, Shorts Programmer Mike Plante.
Other miracle workers include a dedicated festival staff and team
of volunteers led by Festival Manager Beth Caldarello and Deputy
Director Kelly Gilpatrick; our steadfast Board of Directors, and our
esteemed advisory board led by John Waters. Finally, we are deeply
indebted to all of our sponsors and supporters whose contributions — large and small — are a testament to the unifying force that
festivals and the stories they represent bring to building community,
and enriching our lives.

Provincetown International Film Festival 2015
ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
The first movie I saw in Provincetown was Blade Runner, during the
summer of 1982. Fresh out of college, a bunch of us chipped in to
rent a summer cottage in Truro, and we lived for the summer nights
in Provincetown and the summer days on the outer cape beaches. At
that time, there were three independent cinemas in town, and it was
better than Disneyland.
Now, in 2015, independent film not only survives -- it thrives in
Provincetown. The successes of the Provincetown Film Society, and
its Film Festival, Film Institute, and Waters Edge Cinema are built
on this town’s rock-solid artistic legacy. Almost 100 years after
Eugene O’Neill rolled onto Commercial Street with his “trunk full of
plays,” this year’s festival spotlights another local hero, the pioneering Abstract Expressionist Robert Motherwell, featured in the new
documentary PEGGY GUGGENHEIM – ART ADDICT. Just as Motherwell
shook up the art scene in the 1940s and 50s, today’s cinema simply
wouldn’t be the same without groundbreaking indie-film warrior
John Waters, who joins us each year to introduce his favorite films
and filmmakers.
The 17th PIFF film line-up is as adventurous, relevant, challenging
and delicious as ever, giving filmgoers a fully-realized selection of
what we all want – passionate, accomplished works of art that
make us think and laugh and cry. Join us in welcoming the many
filmmakers who arrive this week, as they too discover Provincetown,
an undisputedly fertile ground for the cutting-edge, that attracts the
most creative and daring among us.

The Provincetown International Film Festival is not just a preeminent set of
summer indie film screenings each year. It also includes a slew of extras
that we call PIFFplus — like a keynote speech by the incomparable Lucy
Walker, book signings from John Waters and Larry Kramer, a talk with

to honor the extraordinary commitment of SAGE INN AND LOUNGE owners

to the Provincetown Film Society. It’s

year-round support for many of our
programs and that they supply the film
festival with valuable in-kind lodging and
sublime major event hosting (the yearly

significantly contributed to our campaign
for the Waters Edge Cinema and its

This year WOMR hosts the ever-popular
PIFF Breakfast With.... panels. We match
festival filmmakers and esteemed guests

and topics that are sure to excite and

about the links between non-fiction

Making this independent nonfiction film
has been a long process, as the work is
not a conventional “doc,” but more of a
memoir/essay. After years of work, she’s
ready to bring in an editor, and is looking

do for conversations about loss and
impermanence what Paris is Burning did
for conversations about gender, race,

Schlesinger’s (1926-2003) outstanding work as a director over the past

outstanding achievement, innovation, and vision continues to push the boundaries

A recent review of one of Goldthwait’s films began by asking, “Is it time to start
taking Bobcat Goldthwait seriously as a director?” This may sound like the start of
a joke you’d hear in his stand-up act, but the question is real and the answer is a
resounding yes. With brutal and funny writing, Goldthwait’s films are subversive—
with big laughs sitting atop thoughtful, interesting ideas. In SLEEPING DOGS LIE
(originally titled, plaintively, STAY), he explored the question of how much honesty a
relationship can withstand. And in World’s Greatest Dad, Robin Williams’ title character learns that the things you want most may not be the things that make you happy.
How did this happen? Goldthwait began his career doing stand-up comedy as a
teenager in Syracuse, New York. His unique comedic voice soon propelled him
to national attention and led to acting. But through it all, Goldthwait knew that
directing was his calling—and critics and festivals agree. From Toronto to Sundance,
Sydney to Edinburgh, his darkly funny and brave films have been hailed, as not only
funny and smart, but brilliant, astonishing, and profound.

(1924–2001). Bestowed in partnership with the Hubley family, it’s presented
to a film artist whose career highlights a global vision, aesthetic harmony,
and bold and intelligent artistic choices. Past honorees include Mira Nair, Ed
Lachman and Debra Winger.
Blessed with beauty, brains and exquisite comedic timing, JENNIFER
COOLIDGE makes every film she’s in better. Her talent shines in a range of
characters, from her breakthrough role as Stifler’s mom in American Pie, to
the goofy and lovelorn manicurist Paulette in Legally Blonde, to the golddigging dog owner in Christopher Guest’s BEST IN SHOW. Jennifer Coolidge

on, I AM MICHAEL is a work of art that challenges our preconceptions and is

interview with Rolling Stone reporter David Lipsky, who accompanies him on
the last five days of his book tour. A tenuous yet intense relationship develops
between journalist and his fiercely private subject, a generational hero whose
writing was an inspiration to Dave Eggers, Jonathan Franzen, and Elizabeth
Wurtzel, to name a few. The two men bob and weave around each other,
sharing laughs and also revealing hidden frailties—but in their reluctance,
it’s never clear just how truthful they are being with each other.
Jesse Eisenberg as Lipsky and Jason Segal as Wallace both reveal great
depths of emotion in their performances. The film—“a vibrant, intelligent
conversation piece,” per IONCINEMA’s Nicholas Bell—is based on Lipsky’s critically acclaimed memoir about the unforgettable encounter, written following
Wallace’s suicide in 2008 at the age of 46 (Wallace had suffered from severe
depression for more than 20 years). Lipsky’s discovery of Wallace’s death
opens the movie, and gives their relationship the gravitas it deserves.

Britni West’s directorial debut, which

Festival, casts a sweetly comic and
tender spell.
Mackenzie, a troubled but daring
teenage girl, is sent by her struggling mother to live with her uncle in
Juneau, Alaska. Although her uncle
seems like a supportive caretaker and
friend, the relationship soon takes a
troubling turn and Mackenzie is forced
to run. Trying to make her way back
to Seattle alone to find her absent
mother, Mackenzie only winds up
deeper in the Alaskan interior.
Stylistically daring, West employs a
mostly non-professional cast (with
the exception of indie favorite Alex
Karpovsky) to explore the relationship between the grand beauty of Big
Sky country and the small town lives
of the people in the her hometown of
Kalispell, Montana.

Forty years ago, when JAWS first
horrified beachgoers with bonecrunching hints of a great white
shark attack, who knew that great
whites would actually make the
Outer Cape their regular summer
haunt? No matter: What turned
Spielberg’s proto-summer juggernaut
into a smashing success wasn’t just
the screams it elicited every time
John Williams’s creepy string riff
chummed in: it was also the expertly
crafted Hitchcockian suspense that
Spielberg wove into Peter Benchley’s
story, the hilarious chest-thumping
between Richard Dreyfuss’s whitecollar marine biologist and Robert
Shaw’s blue-collar, salt-soaked
Quint, and the reluctant heroics of
Roy Scheider’s police chief. JAWS is
simply one helluva good yarn, from
its opening deadly skinny-dip to its
explosive climax. It never gets old.
Marshall and his wife, Tippi Hedren,
began to raise lions in 1971 in Sherman Oaks, California, in the hopes
of making this feature, which was
finally completed ten years later.
It’s about a family who visits their
scientist dad (Marshall) in Africa
only to discover that his house has
been invaded by giant cats—and
dad likes it. The movie’s re-release
was launched at the SXSW Festival
earlier this year, and now the growls
and scratches are coming closer!
Marshall’s sons play themselves
onscreen and Hedren’s daughter,
Melanie Griffith, is on hand as well.
The cast reportedly did all its own
stunts, and suffered quite a few
injuries, yet no animals (other than
Homo sapiens) were harmed during
the production.
KILLER JOE
Directed by William Friedkin

If Friedkin, the ’70s phenom who directed The French Connection and The
Exorcist was trying to prove that he’d never lost his mojo, then this hyper-violent,
proudly sleazy Texas noir — the story of a family of lowlifes who hires a hit man
to kill their estranged, biological mother for the insurance money — certainly
does the trick. KILLER JOE is one dark psychodrama, and Matthew McConaughey, as the twisted Dallas police detective who’s freelancing as an assassin,
is something to behold. Indeed, everyone in the film is an outrageously atrocious
human being: the drug-dealer son (Emile Hirsch) who comes up with the plan
to murder mom, his dim-witted dad (Thomas Haden Church), his cuckoo sister
(Juno Temple), and his lurid stepmom (Gina Gershon), all of whom have dibs in
the payoff.

The screenplay is by Steppenwolf Theatre stalwart Tracy Letts, who adapted his
play — Letts and Friedkin previously adapted Letts’s theatrical paranoia party,
Bug. “The film depicts a world that is holding onto habitability by its fingernails,”
wrote Roger Ebert in his review. “It left me speechless.” What better choice for
shared screening with John Waters, that master of pushing the envelope.

AT THE DOOR:
Screening venue doors open 30 minutes prior to each
screening, and lines enter in the following order:
(1) Executive Producer & Producer Passes; (2) Ticketholding Festival/Filmmaker/Sponsor/Industry Passes;
(3) General Admission Tickets. Seating is only guaranteed up until FIFTEEN MINUTES before scheduled start
time. (If you have a Pass, but don’t have a Ticket, join the
Rush Line for a chance to get in!)
SOLD OUT? NOPE – RUSH LINE!
We only sell a limited number of General Admission
Tickets to each show, in anticipation of Executive
Producer and Producer Pass holders who may come.
Fifteen minutes prior to each screening, available seats
are counted, and Rush Tickets are sold/admitted based
on seating availability. Your odds at getting in can be
based upon event popularity, venue capacity, and/or
your place in line. No guarantees—but there’s always a
good chance! Rush Lines begin to form as early as one
hour prior to the scheduled screening.
MERCHANDISE
Take a bit of the festival home with you to remember
year-round! You will find film festival souvenirs for sale
at the Festival Shop located at the Whaler’s Wharf and
Fire House No. 3 (254 Commercial St) including T-shirts,
posters, hats and more. Coming soon…Merchandise will
