FOSTER
CHILDREN
From the Executive Director
To our friends,
Who We
Help
Children in
hospitals
Children are so many things. Innocent. Impressionable.
Vulnerable. Above all, they are dependent upon others for
support and love to guide them through their childhoods.
Countless children face enormously difficult circumstances
every day, and no matter how resilient they may seem,
knowing that you care about them and are rooting for them
makes all the difference.
How do we show we care? In addition to our national and local
grant initiatives, we deliver the magical gift of play directly
to children who are in military families, foster care, children’s
hospitals, or suffering from the effects of poverty or natural
disasters. I’ve personally handed more toys than I can count
to children going through difficult times, and the looks on
their faces say it all—thank you for this really fun toy! But more
importantly, thank you for remembering me. Thank you for
giving me a chance to play and forget about my troubles for
a while.
It is thanks to the support of our caring community of donors
that we had a groundbreaking year in 2014, serving more
children than ever before through toys and grants!
I’m excited to share with you this 2014 Year In Review so you
can see for yourself the difference that you make for children
who need you most.

Exciting plans are already underway in 2015 to expand
our impact through our first-ever direct service program,
which will launch later this year. The new undertaking—
Prescription2Play—will deliver a revolutionary play program
directly to children’s hospitals to help children and families
cope, heal, bond, and create lasting memories during an often
frightening and unpredictable experience.
With your ongoing support, the Toy Industry Foundation will
continue to grow and serve more children across the nation
and around the world. Thank you for taking us to new heights!
With the utmost appreciation,

Delivering the Magic of Play
to Children in Need
All Year Long
For children facing some of life’s
toughest challenges day in and day
out, such as poverty, homelessness,
illness and medical treatments, and
more, our donors help make the
world brighter through play.

“The children seemed confused at first.
A new, free toy was too good to be
true. I’m so glad that we were able to
see them smile when they learned they
did not have to give it back. Those
moments were wonderful!”
–Sally Hedgpeth
Mother of Six
“Daniel got his bubbles last May and
here it is late August and he still grabs
the bottle and wand before anything
else. Who knew that such a simple
toy could bring so much joy to this
beautiful little boy!”

organizations out there who are willing
to donate toys to children and are not
looking for something in return.”

Thanking Military
Families for
Their Sacrifices
Our nation’s heroes come in all sizes,
which is clear in the sacrifices that the
children of our service men and women
make every day. Frequent moves and
long separations are common, and the
fear of losing a parent in battle is all
too real. Toy donations from across
the toy industry and special “day
of play” events with games, music,
entertainment, and more, give them
a respite and show our appreciation.
6
1.37 Million

by TIF in 2014 had a

“For the children to be able to go up to
the tables and select their very own toy
was very memorable. You truly get to
see where each child’s interests lie and
how empowered they felt in making
their own choice. Watching their faces
light up was something I will never
forget! They were all just thrilled!”

Reminding Foster
Children That They Are
Not Forgotten
Hundreds of thousands of children across the
U.S. are in the foster system at this very moment.
After being rescued from abuse or saved from
abandonment, these children are often caught in
the web of the family court system as they await
placement in a safe, loving, and permanent home.
Multiple foster home placements are common,
leaving these children with few adults to depend
on and very little to call their own. Toy donations
and TIF grant funding aim to change that and
give them a reason to smile, laugh, and play.
8
$175,000
in grant funds from TIF to CASA to
fund toy distributions and training
for one-on-one volunteer advocates
for foster children.
"Unfortunately, many foster children do
not get new toys that are just for them.
They often get the used leftovers or
have to share. Foster children are just
as special and important as my very
own children and it was amazing to
see the pure joy on their faces as they
received new toys to call their very
own. Thank you to the Toy Industry
Foundation for making this day so
amazing!"
-Shelly Hart
Program Director
CASA of Northwest Arkansas
TIF NATIONAL PARTNER:

reported that toy donations gave
the children something to hope for
"Too often the children we serve leave
their home with just a few things in a
bag. Having toys of their own helps
to bring a sense of normalcy and
belonging."

Local Grant Impact:
Investing in Communities
By funding three community organizations in
2014, we expanded their capacity to improve the
quality of programming for children in need in
their neighborhoods.
10
$27,500
in grant funding allowed all 3 grantees
to improve their quality of programming
2014 Community Grantees:
Chai Lifeline
NewYork, NY
Hephzibah Children’s Association
Oak Park, IL
North Shore Child &
Family Guidance Association
Roslyn Heights, NY
“Receiving this generous grant will
allow the good work of the children's
center to continue. The children who
come to this respite are treated with
invaluable quality time, care, and love.
Reading to the children each day
allows for curiosity and imagination.
Each child goes home with a book.
The small window of time spent with
these children will hopefully make
their life a little easier and let their
imaginations soar to new heights.”
–Linda
Volunteer at North Shore

children whose parents
must attend court hearings
2/3 of
grantees

in their programs
“The grant from the Toy Industry
Foundation will help Hephzibah
expand Sibling Camp to include more
foster children who will benefit from
the opportunity to spend time with
their siblings and to enjoy a wide
range of outdoor activities that most
have never experienced, including zip
lining, boating, swimming in a lake,
and sitting around a camp fire telling
stories and having s’mores!”
-Deliah Butler
Co-Director of Hephzibah
Children’s Association’s Sibling Camp,
which brings together siblings who
have been separated within the foster
care system
