Morrison a rock icon
Once you hop aboard the Tropical Breeze-Port
Richey Casino and head out into the Gulf of
Mexico, a good time awaits.
Check out 1980, the year Ronald Reagan won the
Republican nomination, Led Zeppelin broke up,
Iron Maiden makes it big and there was ABSCAM.
Sir Loin Charles writes about Jim Morrison of the
Doors, a man who called Florida home and an icon
many future rockers would emulate.

It’s almost here… football season, the
best time of the entire year. Being from
Michigan, my blood begins to turn blue
(Go Blue!).
Boomerz Magazine will be hosting a
football party Sept. 3 at Fiddlers Green
in Trinity. We have hired the Black
Honkeys band. The event will benefit a local charity.
The fun starts at 5 p.m. with prizes, drink specials,
etc. Who knows, but maybe some sports figures
might show. Michigan plays Utah on national TV
at 8:30 p.m. The game will be shown at Fiddlers
Green. Tell your football friends I guarantee an awesome time.
And speaking of time, Boomerz magazine was
hugely welcomed with our new, second publication
in Pasco County. It took only a few weeks and most
copies were gone. Now that’s a great start. If your
business would like to have Boomerz delivered for
free consumer pickup, give us a call. It’s free and
will bring walk-in traffic to your business establishment each month. People always remember where
they go when they pick up something new.
Well, folks, it’s time to say “see you next month.”
Enjoy reading the only magazine that “reaches the
Woodstock generation.”
May our great God bless our country, state and,
most important, you and your family.

Everyone wants a bargain. Right? Well,
here is one for you right in Port Richey.
Whether you are looking for a serene day
on the quiet waters of the Pithlascotee
River; watching for dolphins or sea turtles
in the Gulf; savoring a Reuben, a quarterpound Coney Island hot dog, chicken
Caesar salad and more; enjoying the fiery
glow of the setting sun; dancing or singing
karaoke along with a live DJ — or if you
just love gambling — come to the Tropical
Breeze Port Richey Casino, right next door
to Hooters on the west side of U.S. 19 just
north of the river.
Tropical Breeze is a family-owned-andoperated business. Their company through
the years has been named Pair-A-Dice, Paradise, SunCruz, Port Richey Casinos and
now Tropical Breeze. The business is still
owned by Alex Kolokithas and run with
the help of his daughter Stacy Falcone, her
husband Mark, son in-law Bryan Gilchrist
and Assistant CEO Beth Fifer, who have all
been with the company since its beginning 20 years ago. Not only that, but many
of the employees have also been with the
company since the beginning, Fifer said.
Alex, his wife, Mollie, and their three
children were the creators and founders of
SunCruz Port Richey Casino.
“My mom, Mollie, who just passed
away this year, was the mastermind,
though,” said Stacy.
Alex is a Greek American, and Mollie was a Louisiana girl. They eventually
came to own three casinos.
In 1992, Mollie had an idea of opening
a casino day-cruise named Mr. Lucky that
sailed out of Tarpon Springs; it was the first
in the area. Mark commented that is where
he got lucky because it was there that he met
his wife, Stacy. The casino grew rapidly,
so in 1995 they opened two others, one in
Crystal River and one in Port Richey. “Because the industry and economy changed,
we now only operate the one,” said Stacy.
The concept of shuttling patrons from
the dock to the casino 9 miles from the
coast to international waters was also
Mollie’s idea, said Fifer.
“We are the only casino doing this now.
We have a unique situation. The water
is shallow and very calm and because of
this, people don’t even get seasick.”
The casino itself features 80 slot
machines, Craps, Black Jack, Roulette,
Three-Card Poker, and Let-it-Ride — all
live table games. There are also several
penny and nickel machines, along with

50-cent, $1 and $2 machines, and several
video poker machines that also feature
Keno, a popular game.
The Tropical Breeze itself departs the
dock at 11 a.m. There is entertainment as
well as games played on the ride out till
it reaches international waters; the real
games begin when the casino opens. The
3:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. cruises depart via
the water shuttle. If you go on the 7 p.m.
cruise, on the way back from international
waters there is dancing, live karaoke and a
singer/entertainer.
“We have raffles and giveaways of items
like laptop computers, televisions, barbecue
grills and casino cash to be used for gambling,” said Fifer. “It’s a lot of fun, and we
also have jackpots of $5,000 to $10,000,”
said Fifer. Photos of the jackpot winners and
prize winners are posted on Facebook.
The casino is a 90-foot, three-story
high, diesel-powered vessel that holds 149
people. The main bar is on the first level
with all the slots; table games are on the
second, and the third is an open-air deck
with entertainment. The bar is a fullservice bar with a 16-ounce can of beer,
wine or well-drinks costing only $3, while
top-shelf liquor is $6.25 and call drinks
are $5.25. The menu features reasonably
priced gourmet deli-type sandwiches.
“Our goal,” said Stacy, “is to give our
customers a safe, comfortable gambling
experience that is less expensive and
local. We are a community-oriented business, active members of the West Pasco
Chamber of Commerce and supportive
of our local businesses by buying here
whenever we can.”
Fifer added, “Anyone over 18 is eligible
to gamble, but you have to be 21 to drink.”
Fifer also noted that Mondays are
reserved for hosting private parties and
fundraisers, and it is a good idea to arrive
at the dock 30 minutes prior to boarding
as space is limited. Handicapped parking
is available, as well.
Tickets may be purchased in advance
at the office located at 6520 Ridge Road,
Port Richey. Gift certificates are available
and a big item for Christmas. Not only can
the ticket be purchased, but also gift certificates can be purchased and given as a
gift for casino cash to be used on the boat.
They will even mail them to the recipient
with the appropriate occasion card.
The monthly calendar of events is at
www.portricheycasino.com/events.
Look on the Website for news of the
upcoming “blow-out” event as they celebrate their 20th anniversary in October.
An ATM is available on the boat, as well.

SIR
‘LOIN’
CHARLES
H
e was one of the most iconic
and influential frontmen in rock
music history, and one of pop
culture’s most rebellious icons.
He was James Douglas “Jim” Morrison
(Dec. 8, 1943 – July 3, 1971), a singer,
songwriter and poet best remembered as the
lead singer of The Doors.
Born in Melbourne, he was the son of
a future admiral in the U.S. Navy. His two
siblings were born in New Mexico and
California, but Morrison was born within
hours’ drive of his dad’s grandparents in
Clearwater — where he lived while studying at what is now St. Petersburg College.
He was well known for improvising spoken word poetry passages while the band
played live. Morrison was ranked number
47 on Rolling Stone’s list of the “100 Greatest Singers of All Time,” and number 22
on Classic Rock Magazine’s “50 Greatest
Singers In Rock.” Ray Manzarek said that
Morrison “embodied hippie counterculture
rebellion...” Morrison was sometimes referred to by other monikers, such as “Lizard
King” and “King of Orgasmic Rock.”
Morrison was, and continues to be, one
of the most popular and influential singersongwriters in rock history. To this day
Morrison is widely regarded as the prototypical rock-star: surly, sexy, scandalous,
and mysterious. In 2011, a Rolling Stone
readers’ pick placed Jim Morrison in fifth
place of the magazine’s “Best Lead Singers
of All Time.” Iggy and the Stooges are said
to have formed after lead singer Iggy Pop
was inspired by Morrison while attending a
Doors concert in Ann Arbor, Mich. One of
Pop’s most popular songs, “The Passenger,”
is said to be based on one of Morrison’s
poems. After Morrison’s death, Pop was
considered as a replacement lead singer for
the Doors; the surviving Doors gave him
some of Morrison’s belongings and hired
him as a vocalist for a series of shows.
Morrison developed an alcohol dependency. He died at the age of 27 in Paris,
probably of an accidental heroin overdose.
No autopsy was performed, and the exact
cause of Morrison’s death is still disputed.
Morrison’s grave is located at Père Lachaise
cemetery in eastern Paris.
Morrison read widely and voraciously
— being particularly inspired by the writings of philosophers and poets. He read
Plutarch’s “Lives of the Noble Greeks and
Romans.” He was influenced by Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Charles Baudelaire, Molière, Franz
Kafka, Honoré de Balzac and Jean Cocteau,
along with most of the French existentialist
philosophers. His senior-year English teacher said, “Jim read as much and probably
more than any student in class, but everything he read was so offbeat I had another
teacher (who was going to the Library of
Congress) check to see if the books Jim was
reporting on actually existed. I suspected he
was making them up, as they were English
books on sixteenth- and seventeenth-century demonology. I’d never heard of them,
but they existed, and I’m convinced from
the paper he wrote that he read them, and
the Library of Congress would’ve been the
only source.”
Morrison went to live with his paternal
grandparents in Clearwater, Florida, where
he attended classes at St. Petersburg Junior

perform live and record on albums, the
most notable being “Moonlight Drive” and
“Hello, I Love You.” According to Jakobs,
he lived on canned beans and LSD for several months. Morrison and fellow UCLA
student Ray Manzarek were the first two
members of the Doors, forming the group
during that summer. They had met months
earlier as cinematography students. The
now-legendary story claims that Manzarek
was lying on the beach at Venice one day,
where he accidentally encountered Morrison. He was impressed with Morrison’s
poetic lyrics, claiming that they were “rock
group” material. Subsequently, drummer
John Densmore and guitarist Robby Krieger joined. Krieger auditioned at Densmore’s
recommendation and was then added to the
lineup.
The Doors took their name from the
title of Aldous Huxley’s book The Doors
of Perception (a reference to the unlocking
of doors of perception through psychedelic
drug use). Huxley’s own title was a quotation from William Blake’s The Marriage
of Heaven and Hell, in which Blake wrote:
“If the doors of perception were cleansed
everything would appear to man as it is,
infinite.” Although Morrison was known as
the lyricist of the group, Krieger also made
significant lyrical contributions, writing or
co-writing some of
the group’s biggest
hits, including
“Light My Fire,”
“Love Me Two
Times,” “Love
• “Light My Fire,”
Her Madly” and
1967
“Touch Me.” On
the other hand,
• “Hello, I Love

Storm,” 1971

for his own lyrics,
with the other band
members contributing chords and rhythm.
Morrison did not play an instrument live
(except for maracas and tambourine for
most shows, and harmonica on a few occasions) or in the studio (excluding maracas,
tambourine, handclaps, and whistling).
However, he did play the grand piano on
“Orange County Suite” and a Moog synthesizer on “Strange Days.”
The Doors achieved national recognition
after signing with Elektra Records in 1967.
The single “Light My Fire” spent three
weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100
chart in July/August 1967.
By the release of their second album,
“Strange Days,” the Doors had become
one of the most popular rock bands in the
United States. Their blend of blues and
dark rock tinged with psychedelia included
a number of original songs and distinctive
cover versions.
In late 1967 at an infamous concert in
New Haven, Conn., he became the first
rock singer ever to get arrested on stage, an
incident that further added to his mystique
and emphasized his rebellious image.
During a March 1, 1969 concert at the
Dinner Key Auditorium in Miami, Morrison attempted to spark a riot in the audience. He failed, but a warrant for his arrest
was issued by the Dade County Police
department three days later for indecent exposure. Consequently, many of the Doors’
scheduled concerts were canceled. In
September 1970, Morrison was convicted
of indecent exposure and profanity.
In 2007, Gov. Charlie Crist suggested
the possibility of a posthumous pardon for
Morrison, which was done Dec. 9, 2010.

College. In 1962, he transferred to Florida

school recruitment film.While attending
FSU, Morrison was arrested in Tallahassee after pulling a prank while drunk at a
football game.
In January 1964, Morrison moved to Los
Angeles to attend the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). At UCLA,
Morrison enrolled in Jack Hirschman’s
class on Antonin Artaud in the Comparative Literature program within the UCLA
English Department. Morrison completed
his undergraduate degree at UCLA’s film
school within the Theater Arts department
of the College of Fine Arts in 1965. He
made several short films while attending
UCLA.
In the summer of 1965, Morrison led a
bohemian lifestyle in Venice Beach. Living on the rooftop of a building inhabited

There’s tones of country-club and Key West
— a resort vibe that’s affordable, in Tarpon Springs
By DEBORAH BOSTOCK-KELLEY
Boomerz Magazine
M
obile-home communities
have moved to a higher
standard and better quality of living to meet the
demands of seniors.
Today’s 55-plus mobile-home communities are wonderfully welcoming for active community residents and snowbirds.
“Mobile home communities are back
on the rise for baby boomers,” said Kim
Lake, regional manager. “They miss the
feeling of community, the neighborhood
picnics and the 4th of July barbeques and
community garage sales. They can find
this in our mobile home communities.
They grew up in suburbia and they want
to go back to that.”
Located minutes from shopping,
beaches, and the historic Sponge Docks,
Sun Valley Estates, 39248 U.S. Highway
19 N, and The Meadows, 505 Anclote
Blvd., feature over 500 mobile homes
in 5-star-rated “green” communities that
offer a peek into a nostalgic lifestyle of
years past.
For seniors not willing to pay a fortune
for housing in their “golden years,” this is
an affordable alternative to house, apartment, and condo living. More and more
seniors are discovering the hot trend of
community living as an attractive alternative when considering where they will
retire.
“You can purchase a home for under
$89,000 and it’s yours to use whenever
you want to,” said Lake. “Some of them

even rent them out to get a little on the
return when they’re not using it.”
Mobile home living provides an
affordable vacation property for “snowbirds” who want to trade their frigid
winters for Tarpon Springs’ beautiful
tropical climate.
For animal lovers, the Key Westthemed Sun Valley and country-clubesque
The Meadows allows for small pets, nonaggressive breeds.
These residents, made up of permanent
and seasonal residents, appreciate quality, affordable social suburbia living in a
community that is both beautiful, wellmaintained, and filled with activities to
keep them active and healthy.
“We have no association fee and no
amenities fee,” said Lorraine DeMarco,
community sales manager. “Your lawn is
cut and trash is picked up.”
Activities range from breakfasts,
picnics, barbeques, dinners and dancing
in the clubhouse to crafts, karaoke, bingo,
and cards in the community library to a
community yard sale and spring craft show.
There’s also shuffle board and a heated
pool, as well as a fitness room where residents are encouraged to work out.
“When people think of 55 plus, they
often think of senior housing or assisted
living,” said Lake. “Our signature properties are definitely not that. We encourage
healthy active living for all of our seniors.”

Valley on the back cover for contact and
location information.

BOOMER TV PERSONALITY
J
JOHN WILSON
ohn Wilson knows he has lived a
blessed life.
Earlier this year, he retired from
the main anchor position at WTVT
(Fox 13) in Tampa and handed over the
reins to his son, Mark, who is now the
anchorman at 6 and 11 p.m. on the top TV
station in the Tampa Bay area — something that makes him very proud.
John’s beginnings were in Big Stone
Gap, Va. As a high school student, the
owner of a new local radio station asked
young John if he would help him with
some church programming. He asked if
John would go to the various churches and
set up live Sunday-morning broadcasts,
putting up the microphone and connecting
the remote amplifier to the telephone wires.
He did that at churches for a while, and
asked, “could I set up one more microphone so I could introduce the preacher
and close out the service?” The owner said
yes…so John’s on-air career began.
He says it opened a new world for
him, both being on the air and going to
churches, including the ones where they
had snake handlers.
He then asked if he could announce the
local parade on the air. There he learned to

be descriptive on radio, and to talk for an
hour with no script and little information.
He says that was a great training ground.
He made various tests to improve his
craft. John would be in the car and would
describe everything he saw in great detail
out loud as if he were on the air — cows,
fences, everything. John also would go
into the bathroom and read the newspaper
out loud and try to make the stories more
descriptive.
He worked on his his vocabulary and
decided he needed comparisons. He needed
to know how long is a football field, how
to describe a distance in that measure, describing shapes verbally. He was working
in radio more at that point and decided to
aim for television. He wrote to the absolute top person in television at that time,

the great Edward R. Murrow of CBS, and
asked what courses to take for TV news.
Murrow wrote him back, and wrote something that mystified John at first. Murrow
said first learn something about life. Then
take courses in arts, humanities, history and
politics. Journalism will come.
Turned out to be very good advice. He
was going to college and graduated from
what turned into William and Mary. He

took a lot of theatre courses, after a professor said “if you are going to be successful
in broadcasting you will have to work on
your speech.”
He had gotten rid of a lot of the backwoods, Big Stone Gap accent, but needed
a bit more work. In theater and singing,
he thrived, and learned to love that area of
performing.
At this point, the Vietnam era was
beginning and a friend at a broadcasting
station asked John what he would do about
the draft. He said, “I guess if I’m drafted
I’ll go.” His friend asked, why not get into
army broadcasting? His friend called a
friend who had just been promoted to general at the Armed Forces Radio and Television Service and put John on the phone.
The general gave John a number and said
when you get to basic training, call this
number and let us know where you are. He
did, and orders came that he was to go to
Panama to the Armed Forces Broadcasting
unit there.
His captain took one look and said
nobody gets orders until basic training
is over….this is bull excrement. John
wondered what on earth he had gotten into.

Boulevard friendly for breakfast, lunch
‘Old school’ approach means totally homemade
I
n business since March 2014, Sam
Papadimitriou, owner of Boulevard
Family Restaurant, said he and his
wife, Marie Helene, are doing pretty
well at their breakfast-and-lunch-only
restaurant.
Why? Because, he said, “Customers really love our family-friendly atmosphere.
We take pride in our service, using the
best ingredients, serving large portions
at competitive prices, as well as our food
presentation, always served with a side of
fruit.”
Located at 7507 Little Road, directly
across from the government center on
Little Road in Minoans Plaza, New Port
Richey, Boulevard Family Restaurant is
one of several restaurants that Papadimitriou and his wife have owned. The others
were sold. Originally from Montreal, Papadimitriou is of Greek descent; his wife
is French. They moved to Florida in the
1990s when they owned several Miami
Subs in the Ocala, Orlando and Jacksonville areas but moved to this area because
they always loved Tampa and its great
family-friendly city.
Open from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., Mon.Sun., one of their breakfast specialties is
the California Benedict with crisp bacon,
fresh cut avocado, two over-easy eggs
served on an English muffin topped with
their special Hollandaise sauce and a side
of their signature breakfast spicy potatoes.
Sam said it’s a toss-up over whether that
is a favorite or if it is the Banana Waffle
Tower, featuring light Belgian waffles
stacked and stuffed with sliced banana,
walnuts, freshly sliced strawberries, fluffy
cream cheese and vanilla nutmeg stuffing,
and topped with whipped cream, nuts and
confectioners sugar.
For lunch they serve a variety of American and Greek homemade favorites, from
Reubens to gyros, gourmet salads like the
Greek traditional salad and the chef salad
which are best sellers. The Italian sub, on
a toasted bun is also a hit, stacked with
capicola, Swiss American cheese, salami,
ham, lettuce and tomato.
“Everything we do is old-school,” said
Papadimitriou, “from salads to dressings
and dips. They are all made in-house.”
That includes American and Greek homemade soups and entrees, like the meat loaf
volcano, old-fashioned liver and onions,
chicken and lemon potatoes, roasted
pulled pork—and the list goes on.
The Papadimitrious serve breakfast and
lunch because of family considerations,
meaning their two sons, ages 8 and 10.
Closing early allows him and his wife to
focus on their children’s education and activities. Being open from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.,

Rescue keeps horses off the table
Thoroughbreds
who don’t make

chance to survive
By DENISE ZAHN

Inc. Horse Recue. Equestrian

Inc. Horse Rescue.
Why? Because Glenda Smith, a former
tennis professional, and founder of Equestrian Inc. Horse Rescue, has for the last 30
years been saving horses that would likely
have ended up on dining room tables. Now
she needs your help.
Back in the 1980s Smith, who loved
animals but especially horses, rescued 42
Arabians, brothers and sisters that had been
tied to trees and left in the Ocala National
Forest. That’s how she got started. Retired
from tennis, she has for all these years devoted her time to rescuing horses, primarily
thoroughbreds from assured death.
“Today’s situation is far worse for
horses than it was back then,” she said.
“Today, hundreds of thousands of horses
are shipped to Mexico, Japan and some
European countries that eat horse meat—
and the people are getting cancer because
the horses have been pumped with drugs
making the meat tainted.”
Just like when there are too many cats
and dogs, when horses are overbred, there
are no homes for them all. “People need to
stop breeding horses,” said Smith. “Only
one-tenth of one percent of horses bred
ever make it to the Winner’s Circle,” said
Smith. Have you ever wondered what
happened to the others? Unless they are
rescued, often they become food. This is a
side of the racing and show industry that
most people don’t see. It is common for
thoroughbreds to spend 23 hours a day in a
stall, only going out for one hour of training. “Some are pampered,” she said, but
not the majority.
“What we try to do is make a difference
for the ones we can save,” said Smith. At
Equestrian Inc. Horse Rescue “horses get
to go out and be horses, like they were
when they were yearlings,” she said. The
property totals 15 acres, which includes
the stable, shelters, woods, riding lesson
arena and a pond. “The horses love to
swim, and it’s one of the best therapies for
them,” said Smith. By law, the maximum
number of horses they can care for at one
time is 30, two per acre, but over time they
have cared for hundreds of horses. Mini

to their passion, the horses, said Smith.
Many of them end up adopting horses, as
well, for their children or grandchildren.
One such volunteer plays the harp, and the
horses gather around the soothing sound.
Teens volunteer for their Bright Futures
service and first time juvenile offenders
(non-animal abuse related) learn what it
means to be responsible.
It’s hard work, said Smith. “The heat is
brutal and the rain doesn’t help, but the horses need care 24/7. There are no holidays.”

‘Hachi’ a story of one dog’s faithfulness
Special to Boomerz Magazine
Based on a true
story, Richard
Gere plays the
part of Professor
Parker Wilson,
who bonds with
a pooch named
“Hachiko.”
Boomerz media
“Hachi: A Dog’s Tale” is a 2009 drama
based on the true story of a faithful Akita
Inu, the titular Hachikō. The subject is a remake of the 1987 Japanese language film,
Hachikō Monogatari, literally “The Tale of
Hachiko.” It stars Richard Gere, Joan Allen
and Sarah Roemer.
The movie premiered at the Seattle International Film Festival on June 13, 2009,
and its first theatrical release was in Japan
on Aug. 8 of that year. Sony Pictures Entertainment decided not to release the movie
in American, and the film opened in Britain
in 2010, then opened in over 25 countries
in 2009 and 2010. Total foreign box office
was $46.7 million as of January 2011.
A puppy is sent from Japan to the United States, but escapes when his cage falls at
an American train station. Professor Parker
Wilson finds the dog and takes it home
with the intention of returning the animal
to its owner. His wife, Cate Parker, does
not want them to keep the puppy. Later that
night, Parker learns that the dog is an Akita.
Parker attempts to play fetch with Hachi,
but Hachi refuses. Cate receives a call from
someone wishing to adopt the puppy, but
having seen how close her husband is with
Hachi, she declines.
Parker continues to be mystified by
Hachi’s refusal to do dog-like activities like

chase and fetch. The dog followed Parker
every day to the train station for work, and
waits to greet him. One day Parker gets
ready to leave and Hachi refuses to join him.
When Parker does leave, Hachi chases him
while holding his ball. Parker is surprised
but pleased that Hachi is finally willing to
play fetch. Not wishing to be late, Parker
catches his train despite Hachi’s barking.
Later that day, Parker is teaching, still holding Hachi’s ball, when he suddenly dies.
At the train station, Hachi waits patiently.
He remains, lying in the snow, for several
hours, until Parker’s son-in-law, Michael,
comes to collect him. The next day, Hachi
returns to the station and waits. As time
passes, Cate sells the house and Hachi is
sent to live with her daughter Andy (Sarah
Roemer), Michael, and their baby Ronnie.
However, at the first opportunity, Hachi escapes and finds his way back to the station,
where he sits at his usual spot. For the next
ten years, Hachi waits for his owner.

And here’s to many more!
On March 28, 2015, Hulk Hogan
inducted my brother into the WWE Hall

because he’s so great at speaking. It
was much better than I could have
imagined.
I won’t try to mitigate it. I only

The American Legend
Ford
On April 17, 1964, the production Ford Mustang debuted at the New York World’s Fair on its way to more than 400,000 sales in the first year and 1 million in the first

F
ord’s Mustang was originally
based on the platform of the
second-generation Falcon, a
compact car. While the Falcon
was a pretty boring, utilitarian car, the
Mustang drove its way into America’s
folklore.
For instance:
• “Mustang Sally,” recorded by Wilson
Pickett in 1966, is about a man who buys
a Mustang for his ungrateful girlfriend. It
was described by one cultural historian as
“free advertising for the Ford Motor Co.”
• Steve McQueen drove a Highland Green
1968 Ford Mustang GT in the famous
chase scene in the 1968 film “Bullitt.” A
1971 Mustang Mach 1 was featured in
the 1971 James Bond film, “Diamonds

The Mustang created the “pony car” class
of American automobiles — sports-car like

for inspiring the Toyota Celica and Mercury

The Mustang was brought out five
months before the normal start of the
1965 production year. While the earliest
versions are referred to as 1964½ models,
they’re VIN coded and titled as 1965s,
though there are minor design changes
that differentiate the true 1965 cars from
the 1964½. Production began in Dearborn,
Mich., on March 9, 1964; the new car was
introduced to the public on April 17, 1964,
at the New York World’s Fair.
A stylist who was a fan of the World
War II P-51 Mustang fighter plane is cred-
ited by Ford to have suggested the name.
The Mustang name could not be used in
Germany because it was owned by a truck
manufacturer, so Mustang was sold in Germany as the “T-5” until December 1978.
To cut down the development cost and
achieve a suggested retail price of $2,368,
the Mustang was based heavily on familiar
yet simple components, many of which were
already in production for other Ford models.
Many (if not most) of the interior, chassis,
suspension, and drivetrain components were
derived from those used on Ford’s Falcon
and Fairlane.
Original sales forecasts projected less
than 100,000 units for the first year. This
mark was surpassed in three months from
rollout. Another 318,000 would be sold
during the model year — a record — and
in its first 18 months, more than 1 million
were built!

(NAPS) — Good news: Stroke has
dropped from the nation’s fourth-leading
cause of death to No. 5, according to
new federal statistics.
The decline in stroke deaths may be
due in part to improvements in treatment
and prevention, explains Ralph Sacco,
M.D., chairman of Neurology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. “There are more stroke centers now
operating in the U.S. and the acute care
of stroke is improving.”
“The fact that the death rate is declining from this terrible and devastating
disease is gratifying news,” says American Heart Association/American Stroke
Association President Elliott Antman,
M.D., professor of medicine and associate dean for Clinical/Translational
Research at Harvard Medical School and
a senior physician in the Cardiovascular
Division of the Brigham and Women’s
Hospital in Boston. “Still, far too many
people are dying from stroke and too
many people are suffering greatly from
this disease.”
Stroke remains a leading cause of
disability in the U.S. “Stroke is more
disabling than it is fatal,” says Dr. Sacco.
“Getting medical attention at the first
sign of a stroke gives the patient the best
chance for recovery.”
What You Can Do
While the death rate declined, the

Eclectic blend sure to surprise
at Antiques and Uniques
By DEBORAH BOSTOCK-KELLEY

Kym Eggers is scrambling to make
lemonade, brew coffee, pop popcorn, and
bake fresh cookies for her customers – all
before the first inquisitive customer walks
in the door.
People have said they’ve driven by her
place on U.S. Alternate 19 hundreds of
times and finally curiosity got the better of
them. They stopped to explore the pale yellow house with a vintage car, huge metal
roosters, fountains and many other colorful
metal art pieces adorning the front yard.
A stunned “Wow” has been the typical
response.
“People have no idea we’re this big.
I loved this house for years,” explained
Eggers, owner of Antiques and Uniques.
“When I saw a for rent sign go up, I knew
I wanted it.”
Fast forward five years of creativity,
hard work and dedication and Egger’s
vision for an eclectic blend of dealer’s
wares, consignment offerings, and every
type of artwork has made Antiques and
Uniques in Palm Harbor the go-place for
all things…Literally all things!
Open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day, with
more than 40 dealers and consigners you
are sure to find the perfect interior or
exterior décor.
Everything from soaps, instruments,
tools, candles, furniture, nautical, salvage, primitives, clothing or jewelry
are throughout the many filled rooms of
Antiques and Uniques in Palm Harbor.
In June 2014, after becoming independent from the Ozona location, Eggers and
Dave Stearns, owner of Tarpon Home
and Garden, collaborated together and
transformed the half-acre back lot into an
artist’s wonderland.
A canopy of trees, lights, plants, birdbaths, and a huge tiki bar are joined by
one-of-a kind handmade repurposed metal
artwork, including a giant “pig” or “bull”
grill that billows smoke from their nose
when grilling.
“Every 5 weeks or so, Dave goes to
Mexico and sends a new collection. “We
post on Facebook when the FedEx container arrives and people are here before
the container is even fully unpacked,”
Eggers said. “Tarpon Home & Garden has
really put us on the map.”
Eggers also keeps busy with many
types of special events from Cornhole
competitions, painting classes, American
doll sewing and repair classes to plans for
a vintage hot rod show, doggie adoption
day, and Halloween haunted house benefiting a local charity.
On the last Sunday of every month,
Antiques and Uniques hosts Palm Harbor’s only flea market. Vendors are invited
to come out and set up a 10-foot-square
space in their newly enclosed lot.
There is no fee for the summer, and in
September, they will go back to the last
Saturday and Sunday of every month.

WILSON
From Page 13
But when basic training ended, he was
off to Panama and to a television operation there, where got his start in television
news. He says he owes the army a great
deal, for giving him his TV basic training
and for teaching him a lot about life and the
military.
After the Army, John went back where
his radio job was being held for him in
Richmond, but since the company that
owned the radio station also had a TV
station, he asked if he could switch to TV.
They said yes and he started at their Norfolk station.
He also married his lovely wife, Mary
Kay, at the same time. He was the evening
and late night anchor and news director.
He ended up on the NBC network quite
often as Norfolk was a Navy town, the war
was heating up and there were quite a few
stories of interest there.
NBC asked him to come up and talk
to their vice president and head of the
network’s Cleveland station, WKYC. They
said they were impressed with him and
gave him an audition, which came out well.
They said they wanted him in New York on
the network, but NBC had a training program in which John would work two years
in Cleveland, two years in Boston and then
New York. It looked pretty wonderful, but
John asked about having to move his wife
and three boys all over the country. He decided against it, and accepted an offer from
a station in St. Louis.
His family thrived there and things were
going well but the station was a bit shaky.
Some ownership changes and odd things
started happening and in 1980, he got a
call from Bud Faulder, the news director of
WTSP (channel 10) in St. Petersburg. John
and his family have been Florida residents
ever since.
Things went very well at WTSP under
Faulder’s influence. They became the first
area station to have a helicopter, “Sky 10,”
and did very well in the ratings, but Faulder
eventually left and a new news director
came in and didn’t like Cheryl Brown,
John’s co-host.
They started doing odd things such as
introducing John to a new co-host without
telling his present one, and things were getting a bit crazy. At that point, the legendary
Clarence McKee had taken over as general
manager of WTVT. They thought highly of
John’s work and Clarence gave John a call
one day and invited him across the bay.
John said he had a noncompete agreement in his contract, and actually shouldn’t
even be talking to McKee. McKee asked
John if he was married, to which he said
yes. McKee said, OK, I’ll talk to her and
she can talk to you. So McKee would pull
his big Cadillac into John’s driveway and
talk all afternoon to his wife, Mary Kay,
and set up how things were going to work.
John moved over to WTVT, where he
had a wonderful career spanning 17 years,
capped off with his son, Mark, coming
to work at the same station. John said he
would have retired five years ago, but it
was so much fun working with Mark and
following him on the air that he stayed longer than he thought he would. Since coming off the daily anchor position, he has
not had a moment to contemplate anything
resembling retirement. John has had some
interest from other stations, and doesn’t
have much interest in that but is interested
in possibly teaching , perhaps at the Poynter Institute for Media Studies and possibly
some work at one of the PBS stations.
He doesn’t think he is totally through
with television at this point. He is writing
some memoirs and is getting his entire
extended family of 14 together for a cruise
to Alaska.
He says he’s blessed and thanks God
for his family and three wonderful sons —
Patrick is a movie and TV star, Paul owns
an advertising agency in St. Petersburg, and
his movie career is taking off too. And of
course, Mark followed in Dad’s footsteps
and can be seen weeknights on WTVT with
co-anchor Kelly Ring on the top newscasts at 6 and 11. John says television has
changed so much in his half century plus in
the industry.
Cable television and social media have
given people so many ways to get information, but people seem to be dumbed down.
A complaint John hears is that there is too
much information. People want to know
what’s important but they are unable to
deal with the inundation of news coming at
them in all forms and at all levels of quality. He remembers when there were three
networks and the news was on at one time
and people seemed better informed then,
in many cases, than they do now. He notes
a dumbing down of the news, with poor
grammar and people with a lack of experience and education in some of the anchor
and reporting positions around the nation.
John and his wife, and sometimes the
boys, often perform at concerts and events
such as the Clearwater Independence Day
celebration and the late George Steinbrenner’s Christmas concerts for underprivileged children. He has been heavily
involved in the community for his entire
career wherever he has been.
Roger P. Schulman can be heard weekdays on “The Answer,” WGUL AM 860
in Tampa. He is news director at Salem
Radio in Tampa and does the news between
6 a.m. and noon each day.

amattina. That’s not exactly a
name you’d associate with an
Irish pub and eatery, but Italian
descent owner Vince Lamattina
said the Irish part comes from having wife
and co-owner Kelly Kerr of Irish heritage,
along with many Irish friends. When it
came time to open a new restaurant—an
Irish Pub was the way to go. They decided they wanted to create an authentic
Irish atmosphere where patrons could not
only get a great meal at a fair price but enjoy the perfect pint of Guinness and some
good old-fashioned Irish hospitality.
The Lamattinas started in the restaurant
business at the age of 15 back in their
homeland of Montreal, Canada. After
immigrating to Florida 12 years ago “to
live the dream in the Florida sun,” the
Lamattinas opened their first restaurant in
Palm Harbor, J.C. Cravers Bar and Grill,
which they sold prior to opening Fiddlers
Green Irish Pub and Eatery in Trinity two
years ago.
The Lamattinas always said that an
Irish pub and eatery is a fun place to go.
“We do live music on weekends with
some of the best bands in Tampa Bay
in a big, fun atmosphere.” Local bands
booked almost monthly include top acts
like the Black Honkeys, the Greg Billings
Band, Stormbringer, Soul Circus Cowboys and the Bearded Brothers.
“Weekends are always a fabulous time
and not to be missed,” said the Lammatina.
Lamattina, with more than 20 years’
experience in the restaurant business,
started out in the kitchen. He said that
what keeps customers coming back is
their vast menu of favorites, including
burgers and wings and the Irish pub fare
like fresh Atlantic cod fish and chips,
Shepherds’ Pie in Guinness gravy and
their Bangers and Mash, which is Irish
sausage served with mashed potatoes
and Guiness gravy topped with sautéed
onions—all made from scratch.
“We are always evolving and growing, which is the key to our success” said
Lamattina, “and we have received support

accidental career start.
Her goal is to become a senior executive unit leader, which is the top of the
top, she said, and she believes that Avon
offers a wonderful opportunity whether
you want to go in just as a sales rep. or
in the leadership area. The investment
is a mere $15, you
don’t need have
inventory on hand,
Avon offers online
training, you don’t
have to buy into the
company, you set
your own hours, earn
free vacations—and
Satterfield
if you don’t like it,
you haven’t invested
much nor do you have a garage full of
product, she said. Plus, said Satterfield,
there is no ceiling on how much you can
earn if you take the leadership track.
Avon is a 129 year-old business started
buy a man who gave away perfume with
every book sale he made. Eventually,
he gave up selling books and started a
company called The California Perfume
Company, which eventually became Avon.
That man was David McConnell, and he
offered women something that was rare in
the 19th century, a chance to run her own
business and become financially independent.
Satterfield said that beyond financial
incentives, Avon offers trips and incentives each year. The leader will help set
goals that are easily accomplished, as
well.
“Holidays are great and so are the
products,” she said. “The skin care is
phenomenal. The company spends five
or six years in research prior to releasing
any product.” She also noted there is a
money back guarantee if you don’t like
the product, but they are top of the line.
Seventeen years after she started, Satterfield still challenges herself to be better. “Ninety-five percent of what I do is
customer service. It is rewarding in many
ways, financially and personally. I say if
it feels good, do it.”

leadership track, can take the first step by

A
look at one man’s story may
inspire many people, veterans or not, to help others
overcome difficulties such as
blindness.
Consider the case of retired First Sgt.
Danny Wallace. He enlisted in the Army
as an infantryman, completing one-stop
training that included basic airborne
school at Fort Benning, Ga.
He served for a total of 20 years as a
rifleman, radio transmitter operator, team
leader, squad leader, ranger instructor,
platoon sergeant, company executive officer, and company first sergeant.
During a tour in Iraq, Wallace’s life
changed forever. Two weeks before
Christmas, a car bomb attack in Tal Afar
left him totally blind. After multiple
surgeries-to attach both retinas, replace
the cornea in his right eye, and stitch
severe wounds to his face and neck-he
was still blind in one eye but had limited
vision in the other.
Wallace remained on active duty for
two years after his injury. Upon retiring,
he struggled with the transition to civilian life. “I felt distant and unwilling to
participate in any veterans organization,”
he recalled.
Finding Help
This isolation lasted about eight years.
Then, he attended the Central Blind Rehabilitation Center at Edward Hines, Jr.
VA Hospital just outside Chicago.
There, he found out about the Blinded
Veterans Association, or BVA. Soon after
that, BVA invited him to participate in its
Operation Peer Support initiative. It connects combat-blinded veterans of World
War II, Korea and Vietnam with the
newly blinded who have been wounded
in Iraq or Afghanistan. Operation Peer
NAPS
Danny Wallace, a blinded veteran, learned how to help others like himself enjoy productive and fulfilling lives.
Support activities also provide informational seminars that touch on topics
such as education, rehabilitation through
sports and recreation, technology, and
career development.
It helped Wallace rediscover purpose
in his life and the experience had a ripple
effect as he now serves as a BVA peer
mentor for newly blinded veterans such
as Mark Wilson, who lost his sight as a
result of a gunshot wound to his face.
Wilson’s mother says that meeting Wallace through BVA has literally “transformed” her son.
Over the past two years, Wallace’s
eyesight has begun to decline even further. Nevertheless, he remains driven to
serve. And he is once again a Sergeant,
this time for BVA. “Early in 2014, I
had the privilege to be selected as the
Sergeant-at-Arms for the Blinded Veterans Association,” he explained. “Words
cannot express how grateful I am. Now it
is my turn to help other veterans feel that
they belong as well.”
What BVA And Operation Peer
Support Are All About
Founded in 1945 by a group of
combat-blinded veterans of World War II,
BVA was and is the only veterans service
organization exclusively dedicated to
serving America’s blind and visually
impaired veterans. Membership is not a

requirement to get help nor does vision
loss have to have occurred during military service.
The organization also represents the
interests of blinded veterans before the
legislative and executive branches of
government and encourages them to
participate in VA blind rehabilitation programs and VA national sports events.
BVA counsels blinded veterans and
links them with benefits, services and job
opportunities. It also advocates for blinded veterans in the VA claims process.

by my D.O., but he couldn’t do it for
almost 2 months. I needed somewhere
