Editor’s Message - by Dave Porter
Dear Members:
Some of you will no doubt have noticed my short message in the last issue of Weekly
Bluegrass Calendar on January 22. It announced that I was shutting down the calendar
for the foreseeable future due to issues regarding my day-job and retirement plans.
This will also be the last issue of ’Grass Clippings with me as editor for the same
reasons. In addition I have had to drop out of our band, ’Grass Under Fire.
Three years ago the competition in the industry within which my business operates
became so intense it was necessary for us to significantly cut back our administrative
staff hours and for me personally to return from a 0.8 position to a 1.6 position. Since
then it has been very difficult to keep all the cogs turning together. Without whining
too much hopefully, I will simply say that the loss of the best opportunity yet to get off the treadmill made me realize it
will not happen until I eliminate all distractions and devote full attention to getting it done.
I thank my fellow band members and the other board members of Valley’Grass for being so understanding. Thanks
also to Scott MacIntosh, former banjo player in ’Grass Under Fire for agreeing to return on guitar and vocals for the
next 6 to 8 months and to Kim Wallace who may take over the newsletter.
I hope to see everyone from time to time at concerts. Best wishes to all.
Presidents’ Message - by Donald Tarte
President’s Message
After much discussion and analyzing, the directors of the Club with feedback from
members decided to take a new approach to the Winter Concert Series, and changes
were made to the David Tinkoff Concert due to lack of attendance in previous years.
The new venue, the Greely Legion, provided an excellent venue with lots of parking,
excellent bands, and good food at a very reasonable price.
Even so there was a disappointingly sparse turnout. In my opinion, Valley Grass must
rethink this series. The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the David Tinkoff Award by Michael O’Reilly to Peter Dawson, a long overdue and much deserved
award to him.
Donald Tarte, not quite recently.
The next concert will be Sunday February 15th at the Legion. Music will be provided by the Monroe Sisters and Lynn
Hill Junction. Lynn Hill Junction is a newly formed band of local bluegrass musicians who I consider to be pioneers -Don Hill on resophonic guitar, his brother Doug on bass, Mike Holly and Lynn Thom on guitar, with Vic Chartrand on
banjo and mandolin.
On Monday, March 16, we return to the Police Association Hall with feature band Feller and Hill & the Bluegrass Buckaroos. They are an outstanding new band from Kentucky and Indiana who will provide an evening of entertainment you
won’t want to miss.

top sound engineers in bluegrass music. Chris Hill is an
expert at clog dancing. He has been named National
Champion clogger twice and his dancing has taken him to
the stage of Grand Ole Opry and to Japan.
Both men are multi-instrumentalists. On banjo in particular, Chris is equally comfortable playing Scruggs, Stanley
or Reno styles. Tom excels on guitar and mandolin.
(Extracted from the band’s website bio)
Formed in the tradition of such legendary duos as Flatt &
Scruggs and the Osborne Brothers, Tom Feller and Chris
Hill are also heavily influenced by classic country greats
Buck Owens and Ray Price. Feller’s solid expressive lead
vocals blend seamlessly with Hill’s razor-sharo tenor vocals, culminating in an exciting duo, Feller & Hill and the
Bluegrass Buckaroos.
Mark Poe, another competent multi-instrumentalist is the
3rd member of the band.
Tom Feller from southern Indiana and Chris Hill from
northern Kentucky were born across the Ohio River from
each other.
HELP WANTED—VALLEY ‘GRASS
ADVERTING MANAGER
This relatively recent combination of musicians has two
CDs out so far. Their song “Government Blues” recently
went to the top of the bluegrass charts and their recordings
crop up frequently on Sirius XM radio.
Between them the have performed with The Larry Stephenson Band, Rhonda Vincent & The Rage, Jerry Williamson
& Redwing, 3 Fox Drive, The James King Band, Karl
Shiflett and the Big Country Show, The Wildwood Valley
Boys and Paradise. They met during a joint stint with the
Wildwood Valley Boys, with each admiring the other’s
skills.
Both men have sideline skills in addition to their work as
bluegrass performers. Tom Feller is considered one of the
Correction:
Last month we reported that the only award won by
someone from the Valley’Grass region at Central Canadian Bluegrass Awards held at Deerhurst in November
was Steve Piticco, lead guitarist for Jan Purcell and Pine
Road.
In fact, the band “Sweet Grass” picked up the award for
“Most Promising Group.” Sorry Jimbob and other
band members.
The Board of Directors is looking for a volunteer interested in taking over the advertising of events in all the
local free listings available in newspapers, radio and
TV. A person who has knowledge of Facebook and /or
website updating would be especially beneficial. Promotion of events has never been done well enough because Board Members are so busy with other aspects
of events and other duites. It really needs a special person. This job may become a Board of Director position
at the next AGM.

In Memoriam
Each year we try to publish a list of Valley ‘Grass members or other individuals who have been involved in the
local bluegrass community as fans, musicians or builders
and who passed away during the previous year. A previous issue and two weekly calendars carried an announcement requesting submissions. This year we received
only one name:
Don Cook of the Spencerville area. Don & his wife took
it upon themselves to maintain the depleted gravel pit
south of Spencerville as a park and acted as our hosts at
the 2013 Annual General Meeting.

“Grasstowne” is now a 4-piece, 25% female band consisting of veterans Alan Bibey (mandolin) and Justin
Jenkins (banjo) and newcomers Gina Britton (bass)
and Jimmy Haley (guitar). They replace Kameron
Keller who is now with Junior Sisk and Shannon
Slaughter, now fronting “County Clare”. Gina will
continue to do selected dates with her other band,
“Sister Sadie”.
Jacob Eller has left Sierra Hull’s “Highway 111” to
join “The Church Sisters” citing “Sierra’s new direction” as the reason.
Sierra Hull’s new direction is apparently a solo CD
project featuring only her own songs accompanied by
only 2 instruments — her mandolin and the bass of
Ethan Jodiewicz. Bela Fleck is the producer.
Ray Gargiulo of Massapequa, NY (in the borough of
Queen’s) submitted the winning bid of $13,000 for the
custom made guitar by Dana Bourgeois modelled after
the famous Tony Rice/Clarence White Martin. The
money from the auction goes to Tony to help with his
medical bills.
Long overdue, the IBMA presented a special posthumous award to Debbie Delmore, daughter Alton Delmore on December 25th, the 106 anniversary of Alton’s
birth. The Delmore brothers (Alton and Rabon), part
of the first generation of bluegrassers, was a brother
duet from a poor family in Elkmat, Indiana. Rabon died
December 4th, 1952 at only 37. Alton die in 1964 at 55.
Between them they contributed 1200 songs to bluegrass

and country including: Blue Railroad Train, Beautiful
Brown Eyes, Brown’s Ferry Blues, Gonna Lay Down
My Old Guitar, Deep (or Big) River Blues, and You
Will Be Lonesome Too to name just a few. They were
named to the Alabama Country Music Hall of Fame,
The Alabama Music Hall of Fame, The Nashville Song
Writers Hall of Fame and the American Country Music
Hall of Fame. People and bands who have listed them
as having influenced their sound include: Bill Monroe,
Jim & Jesse McReynolds, The Everly Brothers, The
Beatles, The Beachboys, Simon & Garfunkel, Bob
Dylan, Flatt & Scruggs, Doc Watson, Willie Nelson
and Jimmie Rogers.
Power Bridge Pins Invented — These pins are installed in the holes where regular bridge pins go but are
permanently attached with bolts. Strings can then be
attached in seconds by sliding them through in the protruding part of the pin behind the bridge. On-stage, individual string changes are much quicker. Contact Big
Rock Engineering at www.f1pick.com.
For those following the 4-year cancer saga of dobroist,
Phil Leadbetter, apparently his oncologist has given
him a clean bill of health following his course of 6
chemo treatments.
Collings has introduced the “cheaper” Waterloo line of
guitars modelled after the economy guitars produced in
the great depression. The so-called economy is
achieved with simplicity in design, and minimal ornamentation without sacrificing wood quality. The only
model available so far is the WL-14 which sells for
$2100 US ($2625 Cdn).

Watch for a new CD sometime in the near future featuring 4 instrumental superstars —
Darol Anger (fiddle); Joe Walsh (Mandolin);
Grant Gordy (guitar) and Ethan Jodziewicz
(bass). They call themselves “Mr. Sun.”
Ellen Petersen who plays banjo in her family’s
bluegrass band tried out for American Idol and
easily made it through to the next level. Two
judges (Harry Connick and Keith Urban)
jumped up on stage with her after her song to do
an impromptu version of the Ballad of Jed
Clampett. A bluegrass winner on Idol? — Possible!
Bands wishing to gain a performance spot in
IBMA’s Bluegrass Ramble should apply now.
Up to 30 bands will be chosen to play in the
Wednesday/Thursday portion of the event at 5
downtown bars in Raleigh, NC. Bands are not
paid but winning a spot provides valuable perqs.
See Bluegrass Today on-line for details.
Dixie Hall, life and song-writing partner of
Tom T. Hall, a major Nashville figure died at
her home on January 16, 2015 at 80 years old.
She had written some 500 songs, many recorded
by bluegrass bands and was active in managing
Tom’s label, Blue Circle Records. She had
had a lengthy illness in 2014 due to a brain tumour. Numerous songs on the recent
“Daughters of Bluegrass” boxed set which featured more than 100 women singing and playing bluegrass were penned by Dixie. According
to Bluegrass Today, the long list of notables on
the CD who sang Dixie’s songs included Martha Adcock, Brooke Aldridge, Dale Anne
Bradley, Becky Buller, Melissa Sherman,
Tina Rigsby, Missy Raines, Kathy Kallick,
Lorraine Jordan, Debbie Gulley, Tina Adair,
Sierra Hull, Laurie Lewis, Fayssoux Starling
-McLean, Pam Tillis and Donna Ulisse.
Dixie was born in England, came to America in
1961 at 26 and stayed with Mother Maybelle
Carter’s help. She married Tom T. at 34 in
1969. She was the recipient of a Distinguished
Achievement Award from the IBMA.
Deering has introduced a 22-fret 6-nylon
stringed banjo that is tuned like a guitar. It has
a 6-bracket, 12-inch pot with an open back, and
a bridge plate between the bridge and head to
mellow the sound and a piezoelectric pickup for
optional plugged-in use. Deering also makes an
8-string mandolin banjo.

PETER DAWSON WINS 2015
DAVID TINKOFF AWARD
Veteran fiddler
Peter Dawson was
the 2015 recipient
of the David Tinkoff Award.
The award is presented annually by
Valley ’Grass “to a

made a significant
contribution to the

period of time.”
Peter certainly meets that criterion having perform with his fiddle
for over 60 years with many of the very best bluegrass and country bands Canada has produced. His performance career was not
limited to Canada. For example he played regularly in the house
band of the Country Music Jamboree on WWVA, Wheeling West
Virginia, when that show was second only to the Grand Ole Opry
in popularity and reach.
The award was presented at the annual David Tinkoff concert held
at the Greely Legion on January 18. David Porter also announced
the winners of the other two awards presented annually in memory
of David Tinkoff. (For more on Tinkoff see previous issues of
’Grass Clippings.) The first was the Mandolin Player of the
Year Award presented in November, 2014 at the Central Canada
Bluegrass Awards weekend. It went to Bernie Caron of the band
“Winterline”. The second was the David Tinkoff Mandolin
Scholarship sponsored jointly by Valley ‘Grass and the Ottawa
Folklore Centre to a promising young mandolin student. It covers
$600 worth of lessons. The 2014 winner, Kelsea McKenna, was
on hand the concert to receive a letter of congratulations and to
pick two tunes with the Dusty Drifters.
Two Awards In Future Years
David Porter also announced that the Board of Directors had approved a proposal by the David Tinkoff Award Committee to present two awards each year commencing in 2016. One award will
go to a musician and one to a “builder” of the bluegrass community in the Valley. The committee explained that it has a long list
of people under consideration for awards in the future as well as
sufficient funding making two awards both desirable and viable.
Disappointing Attendance
Organizers were glad for Peter Dawson’s sake that about 50 people were in attendance. But Despite the fact that two great bands
— “Bluegrass Junction” and “The Dusty Drifters” were on hand
to provide the entertainment, the attendance was disappointing.

He also played with Bill Monroe, Jimmy Martin and others.
The Tuttles with AJ Lee who headlined at the Central Canada Bluegrass Awards in 2013 once again collected 4 California bluegrass
awards. Best Female Vocalist went to AJ Lee (now 17); Father, Jack
Tuttle, took Best Fiddle Player; Michael Tuttle (17) took Best Mandolin
Player; and the whole ensemble won as Best Bluegrass Band. In case
you think winning in only one state is small potatoes, remember that California has a population of 40 million, more than Canada, and that they
were competing against over 300 other bands.
Further on the Tuttles, daughter Molly Tuttle, now 22, moved from Palo
Alto to Nashville on February 3. Apparently she has a number of performance opportunities and her incredible guitar picking is in demand as a
studio musician.
Want to run a museum? The International Bluegrass Music Museum
(IBMM) is looking for an Executive Director to replace Gabrielle Gray
who will continue to manage the IBMM’s festival. Assistant Director,
Carly Smith will take over on an interim basis. The new E.D. will be
responsible for overseeing the completion and opening of the organization’s new building in Owensboro, KY. Apply at [email protected]
“The Hillbenders” bluegrass band will do a complete re-make of the
Rock Opera “Tommy” originally written primarily by Pete Townsend
and performed by his band, “The Who” starting in 1969. The songs tell
the story of a young boy who, despite being deaf, mute and blind, becomes a pinball wizard. “Tommy, A Bluegrass Opry” is due out in May.
Veteran picker, Adam Steffey who has played with numerous bluegrass
bands and country singers and is currently with “The Boxcars” (mandolin) underwent surgery this month for nerve damage. He
hopes to resume playing by month end.
Gavin Largent, only 18 years old, has joined Michael Cleveland to replace banjoist, Glenn Gibson. Largent will also play dobro.
“American Drive” has gone on a hiatus of undetermined length following the departure of Rickey Wasson and new banjo player, Josh Hymer.
