For their new Bed Pavilion,
Central DuPage Hospital had a
vision that was based on the service,
convenience and environment of a 5-star hotel.
The design challenge for the interior environment was
how to create a distinctive hospitality ambience given the
rigors of their healthcare delivery. Through a skillful use of color,
patterns & textures the material palette was a juxtaposition of beauty and
practicality. All of this, while remaining sensitive
to the requirements of a LEED Silver building.

Welcome to the new fiscal year 2012-2013
ASID Illinois and a brand new three year
strategic plan!
You’re 2011-2012 outgoing board and the incoming 2012-2013 board have
been dedicating extensive time over the past four months to provide the
new tactics to fulfill the strategic plan. The new plan will be effective in
moving the chapter forward over the next three years to enhance our organization and more importantly help each of you, our members grow both
professionally and better develop your Interior Design practices! Thank
you board members for all your time, talent and dedication!
The past year has been spent raising the bar by revamping and adding value to our timeless events that you,
as members, look forward to such as Design Summit and Celebration of Design! These events promote ASID
Illinois within our industry and business community helping to promote the value of interior design.
You will have many opportunities to participate and volunteer in all aspects of our chapter. 25% of you
responded to our survey requesting your growth as an ASID Illinois member by adding value;
• Value by increasing educational opportunities. We have started in 2012, and will continue, to provide
CEU’s at each event. Adding to your knowledge of various aspects of business in our evolving and
changing business world.
• Value by adding social media to each event – before/during /after events. This increases our visibility
within the industry and our Illinois business community. We are identifying training opportunities for
each of you as we explore and educate on the virtual opportunities to enhance ASID Illinois.
Professional Development Director
Mary J. Grether, ASID
[email protected]
• Value in opportunities for participation in community service projects. 100% of you requested increased
opportunities for community service. Each board member will be selecting a charitable organization to
extend help in participation in either small or large ways. These organizations will be announced to you so
each of you can volunteer to help.
Communications Director
Carol Stolt, Allied ASID
[email protected]
• Value in reaching out and jointly participating in educational and networking events with organizations
within our industry as well as perimeter industries related to the built environment. Our Outreach
Committee will continue to spearhead programs that bring together other professionals within the
‘umbrella’ of our design community.
Student Representative
Emily Case, Student ASID
[email protected]
• Value in ASID Illinois taking the lead in our industry. Mirroring National ASID we will increase our
communication with each member for educational purposes. We will identify and enlighten you on availability of studies through ASID Foundation and other organizations within the industry that can provide
evidence based design information to better enhance your practice in interior design.
Student Representative
Paul Ramoie, Student ASID
[email protected]
• Value in measuring our success by our strengths and raising the bar on our weakness so they too will
become our strengths. Moving forward we will be documenting and monitoring all aspects of each event
for accountability and improving results in the future.
• Value in each of you! I am in awe of past board and committee members for their passion, dedication and
commitment that laid the foundation for the strength of our chapter. I am honored and humbled to follow
in their footsteps! Thank you for this opportunity and I look forward to working with each one of you!
The very best to each of you!

ASID Illinois Chapter Celebrates a Successful 80th Year
As the largest interior design association in the nation and in Illinois, the
Illinois Chapter made no small strategic plans the 2011-2012 fiscal year. We
have invested in the future of the Illinois Chapter for the long-term vision of
is proud to be an innovator within the industry
in awarding the work of interior designers.
• You can work alongside the Chapter in this
engaged members who collectively further the recognition of interior design
as a profession in Illinois. This is no small feat. As I reflect on what we have
accomplished as a Chapter this fiscal year, I am proud to be among members
who have a contagious enthusiasm and passion for having made an indelible
strategic objective by taking advantage of the
ASID Illinois Design Excellence Awards, the
only interior design award competition honoring
interior designers in the state.
impact for members and our interior design industry. Here’s how we
accomplished our “no small” strategic plans this fiscal year.
Our primary strategic objective this fiscal year was to support advocacy efforts and educate members and the public regarding advocacy and the right to practice.
• Our chapter not only continues to work with the IIDC Coalition logistically,
strategically, and financially but has also formed a member-based Advocacy
Task Force for grassroots efforts. We have an ASID member on the Interior
Design Licensing Board with the IDFPR, and have interior design messaging
in magazines like CS Interiors and Contract Magazine. We continue to strive
ahead in helping our industry and the public understand the interior design
right to practice issue and its important relevance in today’s built environment.
• How can you work alongside the Chapter in this strategic objective? You
can make a difference in educating others about the interior design
profession by simply using your ASID Appellation in email messages and
discussions with showrooms, industry partners, and the public. It goes a
long way when our industry partners and legislators know that an ASID
member is responsible for growing their business.
Our secondary strategic objective this fiscal year was to be an effective industry resource.
• Our Chapter continues to provide a plethora of CEU opportunities that
are both employee and business-focused through an expanded Design Summit
and other events. Students and emerging professionals are being served
through work of the refreshed Student Advisory Committee and dual Student
Representative to the Board positions. The efforts of these additional positions allow the Chapter to better reach our “under 5” practitioner members
who are increasing at an exciting rate, which is also a national trend. The
new and improved Design Excellence Award Competition and Celebration
of Design Gala at the Art Institute of Chicago Modern Wing has enabled
us to become a locally recognized source for practitioners, emerging professionals, and industry partners who value award winning interior design. We
have brokered an ongoing relationship with Contract Magazine to provide
the Design Excellence Award Magazine. This partnership, along with recent
advances in the interior design award competition, has brought a wellrounded significance to the award competition. The ASID Illinois Chapter

ILLINOIS
A key strategic objective this fiscal year was to build bridges to new
members and engage existing members.
• Our Chapter continues to provide better targeted programming that engages
our members in the form of a new weekly NCIDQ study group, new leadership in peer groups, substantive and newly designed quarterly Newsletter,
exciting and well-attended networking events with other industry partner
associations, among others. If you were in attendance at the Celebration of
Design in September, you met our outstanding ASID Illinois Student Chapter
at Illinois Institute of Art Chicago who won ASID National’s coveted Student
Chapter of the Year 2012 and the remarkable ASID National Fundraiser
Project of the Year 2012. The Board is very proud of these and all of our
engaged members who have become leaders and continue to assist us in
fostering an improved and valuable member experience.
• By signing up for a committee that interests you, you can work alongside
the Chapter in this strategic objective. Contact the new President, Pat Bailey
at [email protected] for information or to sign up.
The Illinois Chapter is one of the top ASID chapters nationally, and as a result,
our chapter has been chosen to receive one-on-one attention from ASID
National staff. I am pleased to report that our Chapter has utilized this
assistance to grow internally, including strategic planning, training, and streamlining work processes among others. An ever-evolving process, we are continuing to grow passionate, future leaders through placement, training, and
recognition. This 2011-2012 fiscal year, we have strengthened the Illinois
Chapter like never before which is due in part to you, our members. By stepping up and becoming engaged and vital members of our Chapter, you have
made an indelible impact this 80th year that positively impacts our Chapter
for years to come. As the new leadership team begins its work, I encourage
you to stay engaged in this community of members who are passionate about
bringing recognition to the profession of interior design.
Best,
Jessica Henn Suh, ASID

Designers About Town
We were thrilled to receive the following
letter regarding ASID Allied member
Karen Riordan’s participation at The
Country Folk Art Festival. Congratulations
Karen on this innovative direct marketing
strategy!
To ASID Illinois,
The Country Folk Art Festival producers
are grateful to ASID for both connecting us
with Interior Designer Karen Riordan,
Allied ASID and for loaning us your
impressive signature tablecloth and banner
for use at The Country Folk Art Festival
Saturday, Sept. 22 and Sunday Sept. 23.
Karen Riordan was an excellent representative of ASID. She efficiently gathered
select items from vendors and efficiently
and artfully arranged a vignette placed at
the door to give visitors a preview of what
was available at the show. Karen interacted
beautifully with people as they entered and
answered their questions in a quick and
friendly manner. She came ably prepared,
bringing holiday-inspired fabrics to add to her attractive display. She also
had prepared packets to distribute to
folks as they entered which included her
business card, some examples of her
work and a coupon, all tucked into an
attractive ribbon-tied envelope.
Karen is truly a pro and we were
delighted to have her participate in the
event.
We hope to offer ASID members an
opportunity to participate in like manner
in future shows. We can’t promise
anything but it is an opportunity for
interested interior designers to interact
with possible future clients.
Again – thank you for Karen and your
terrific props.
Pat Gerlach – Public Relations representative for Art of the Heartland, Inc.
and The Country Folk Art Festival
Note: Promotional press releases
focusing on Karen’s appearance at the
show were posted on Patch.com for
various communities including St. Charles, Glen Ellyn and elsewhere.

Go Pro: NYC
Held September 14-15, 2012 / New York City
By Ashleigh Lessard, Allied ASID
I had the opportunity to attend the second annual GO PRO event in NYC
this fall on behalf of the ASID Illinois Chapter and it was a wonderful,
inspiring weekend!
When I was doing some initial research on this event to see all that it would
entail, the description stated that this event would be:
“a national ASID program designed by emerging professionals, for emerging
professionals. The second annual GO PRO: NYC delivers high-quality
learning and networking opportunities for new designers. Experience the
pulse of Manhattan with industry peers and attend inspiring events that
will remind you why interior design is the field for passionate professionals.”
This was indeed a tall order, but wow, did this event ever deliver! The
weekend was full of networking opportunities to meet fellow designers in
similar phases of their careers as well as seasoned professionals with invaluable advice and guidance to impart.
The educational aspect of the event is not to be overlooked as attendees
earned 0.4 CEU credits from the different presentations. The presenters
were so knowledgeable and engaging and the topics were interesting and
inspiring.
Each event was held at a different showroom in locations all around
Manhattan so we were able to experience many different locales and neighborhoods each with their own unique architecture, design and feel.
The weekend began with the ASID Chapter Emerging Professionals
Committee Chair Luncheon with members of the Emerging Professionals
Advisory Council (EPAC) leading the round table discussion. We learned
about all of the ASID National Emerging Professional programs such as:
EP Takeover Month, EP Town Hall at NeoCon, EP Profile on the ASID EP
and Students Facebook page and the 90 second scoop videos. Additionally,
there are many resources available on the ASID website (ASID.org), such
as Mapping Your Future, Tips for Grads, and The Fellows Project.
We were also delighted to have Barbara S. Marini FASID/IDEC, the incoming
ASID National President, join us for lunch to hear our voices and let us
know how important Emerging Professionals are to the ASID membership. The lunch was held at the New Traditionalists showroom which was
full of beautiful, hand-crafted furniture and was the perfect spot to start
the weekend and get all of us excited about the wonderful design we would
see throughout the entire event.
The first CEU called “PROfessional Advancement: Mastering Presentation
in the Workplace – A Skills Workshop” was held at the Walker Zanger
showroom. The presentation was given by Jason McNeely, Sales Training
Manger for Hansgrohe USA. Jason was funny and entertaining and gave
us great tips for successful resumes, interviews, and presentations. The
best advice I took away from his presentation was to be authentic and
passionate in what you do and in what you believe. People will inevitably
be drawn to you because of your genuine enthusiasm.

The second CEU was called “PROcess: Generative Space – A Lecture on
Creating Memorable Spaces” and was held at the Teknion showroom. The
presentation was given by Tama Duffy Day, FASID, FIIDA, Principal and
National Interior Designer, Healthcare Practice Leader at Perkins+Will.
In this presentation we learned how both the physical and social space can
be re-envisioned during the programming process to create spaces that are
more memorable and where the occupants and community can flourish.
Tama implored us to create spaces that are life sustaining, systemic and
sustainable. Equally important, she encouraged us to “lead by design”
through synergy in the design process and within the design team.
The “PROduct: Material Connexion Library Tour” was mind-opening.
The library archive features over 7,000 cutting-edge materials in eight categories, including the largest selection of sustainable materials and an exclusive “Cradle to Cradle” section.
We had an opportunity to see new and innovative products and to understand how different industries can inspire inventive design and product
development.
Following other networking events and a tour of the New York Public
Library, our final event, “PRO Bono Work: Empowering Architecture and
Design – A Keynote Presentation from MASS Design Group”, was held at
the FLOR showroom. Speakers Michael Murphy and Alan Ricks, founding
partners of MASS Design group, spoke about design’s impact on social
change. They shared their story of building The Butaro Hospital in Rwanda
chronicled in their book, “Empowering Architecture, Butaro Hospital,
Rwanda: Strategies to Improve Health and Strengthen Community Through
Architecture and Design.” They spoke about creating buildings that are
efficient, effective, and empowering by using processes that favorably impact
employment, education and the environment.
Attendees from 23 states were mesmerized by their story and inspired by
their passion. It was the perfect ending to a wonderful weekend of connections, conversations and knowledge. I was proud to be there to represent
ASID Illinois and I look forward to implementing all that I learned to help
grow our Emerging Professionals group this year.
Videos of all of the CEU presentations will be posted on the ASID.org
website in October so all Emerging Professionals can take advantage of
these great educational topics.
Our Apologies…
In the Summer edition of Inside Illinois we recognized the accomplishments of Linda Navara. We inadvertently misspelled Linda’s last
name. The Editorial staff extends our most sincere apologies for this
error. Congratulations again to Linda Navara for the “Best of Remodeling”
Award from Houzz.

Value of Membership Branding
Membership in ASID benefits all of us in a myriad of ways. Use of the ASID
logo and appellation in correspondence and marketing collateral is one of
the easiest and most impactful strategies for capitalizing on our ASID membership. Use of the ASID logo and appellation visually communicates your
alignment with an established, well respected professional society that values
excellence in design, ethical practices and a commitment to the recognition
of the professional status of interior design. Using the ASID branding and
appellation correctly is paramount to creating a unified, recognizable impression within the industry and to the public. Below are the official ASID
branding guidelines and appellation directions for each type of ASID membership. What is an appellation? If you’re reading this, you probably have one,
but are you using it correctly? Read on to find out.
Interviewing Tips, the ASID Style Guide and other reference documents.
The ASID Style Guide includes the proper format for listing titles on new
letterhead and business cards, as well as other useful information.
The ASID Appellation
What is an Appellation????? No, not a mountain range in Tennessee. Webster
defines an appellation as an identifying name or title, a designation. Your
ASID appellation does just that, it indentifies your affiliation with ASID and
designates your membership type i.e. Student, Associate, Allied or Professional.
In the past year, ASID has modified the standard of the appellation
presentation. If you are an active ASID member, you are encouraged to use
the ASID appellation after your name. Your clients, employers, the public
and affiliated professionals acknowledge this designation as the hallmark
of professionalism. It demonstrates to a prospective employer and client
that you are committed to your profession-- you have the qualifications that
set you apart from others.
The ASID Brand
The ASID brand is more than a logo or set of colors. It's how we present the
Society to members, target audiences and the public through a unified voice
that supports the message and mission of the organization. It's reflected
in how we write, what we say and how our materials look, from the simplest
note to the most elaborate brochure.
Notes:
• Students and Allied members are permitted to have the word “member”
in their appellation (Ex. John Doe, Allied Member ASID).
• List ASID first in cases of multiple appellations (Ex. John Doe, ASID,
LEED AP)
• The membership designations must be spelled out completely. (Note:
"of the American Society of Interior Designers" may be substituted for
"ASID"). No modification or deviation is permitted.
• The appellation for professional members and the designations for other
members may be used only in conjunction with the member's own name.
• Members may not utilize any form of the name of the Society or the ASID
appellation in conjunction with a firm name, even where the member's
name is encompassed in the name of the firm.
• A member may in no way imply, through advertising or other means, that
employees of his or her staff or firm are members of ASID unless that is
in fact the case, and then they may be identified only by the appellations
or designations consistent with their status in ASID.
It is the responsibility of each and every one of us to comply with our brand
guidelines when representing ASID, whether that is a verbal, written or
visual communication.
The ASID logo must always appear with the type AND the mark, and include
your chapter name. ASID uses the primary fonts Trade Gothic and Mercury,
and the secondary fonts Georgia, Tahoma and Impact, which are available
on all PCs.
Our primary color palette includes ASID red, black and gray, and our secondary
palette uses cyan and yellow. These colors should appear in all collateral,
aside from imagery.
Since the launch of the ASID rebrand in June of 2011, we've expanded the
look to be more reflective of our industry, to include imagery and typography, which will allow chapters to be a bit more creative in outreach
endeavors. It is essential to adhere to brand guidelines to build awareness
and equity in our brand.
Only professional members may use the ASID logo in any manner. For usage
guidelines, consult the ASID website.
ASID Brand Central (http://www.asidbrandcentral.org/) encompasses a
collection of resources for ASID Chapters, including Brand and Image
Guidelines, Social Media Guidelines, Public Relations At-A-Glance, Media
If your ASID membership has lapsed, you may no longer use any ASID appellation or the ASID logo, among other benefits. ASID strictly enforces this
regulation and performs audits.
Tips on how to use: On your email signature, website, business cards, letterhead and when being interviewed or receiving recognition.
