Salmon River Fish Hatchery is located off North Bank Road. 111.8 - 45th Parallel Midway between the equator and the North Pole. 111.8 - East Devils Lake Road The road passes along the east side of Devils Lake. Casino Resort Lincoln City Chamber of Commerce is located at this junction. The Roads End district is on the north end of Lincoln City. The park has parking, beach access, and picnic tables. This is one of the quieter places to take a walk on the beach near Lincoln City. Chinook Winds is operated by the Confederated Tribe of Siletz Indians and offers food and live entertainment as well as gaming. 112.9 - Lincoln City (ZIP 97367) Incorporated in 1965 from the communities of Oceanlake, Delake, Taft, Cutler City, and Nelscott, Lincoln City has accommodations from budget to luxury, as well as 7 miles of public beaches and a variety of hiking trails. Follow brown U.S. Forest Service signs about 12 miles to trailhead. The last 10 miles are single lane. 120.3 - Siletz River Hwy 229 follows the Siletz River for several miles before continuing south through the town of Siletz and reaching Toledo, 7 miles east of Newport. Siletz is the site of the annual Nesika Illahee Pow Wow in August. At Strome Park, the river almost doubles back on itself; rafters can float downriver about 5 miles and end up less than a mile from where they started. 122.3 - Salishan Spa and Golf Resort The renowned resort includes a worldclass spa. The golf course front nine is on the east side and the back nine on the ocean side of the highway. The Shops at Salishan are on the west side. 122.5 - Gleneden Beach (ZIP 97388) Situated at the south end of Siletz Bay, Gleneden Beach is best known for the Salishan Spa & Golf Resort. Picnicking, restrooms, no camping. 125.3 - Fogarty Creek State Park Sheltered from the wind, this is a good place for sunbathing. Take the road on the inland side of Hwy 101. Picnic facilities are near the parking lot. A trail leads under the highway to a beach and dramatic rock formations. 126.4 - Boiler Bay State Scenic Viewpoint The J. Marhoffer, a small freighter, sank here in 1910. Its boiler, still mired in a sandbar, is visible at low tide. Picnic facilities and year-round opportunities for whale watching. One of the best locations on the coast to spot gray whales. 36 Oregon Coast Mile-by-Mile Guide 2010–2011 128.0 - Depoe Bay (ZIP 97341) The land that now is Depoe Bay was allotted by the U.S. government in 1894 to a Siletz Indian named Charlie Depot. His last name was derived from his employment at a U.S. army depot. The family later changed the spelling to Depoe, which was the spelling used when a post office was established in 1928. Depoe Bay may have only 1100 fulltime residents, but it still knows how to put on a party. April brings the Classic Wooden Boat Show, Crab Feed, and Ducky Derby. The Fleet of Flowers is on Memorial Day, and the annual salmon bake is in September. Depoe Bay claims to have the world’s smallest navigable harbor. Charter fishing and whale-watching boats can be on the open sea in just minutes. About 1/10 mile along this road is Rocky Creek Bridge. This McCullough-designed, reinforcedconcrete bridge was built in 1927, and the concrete has recently been treated to prolong its life. One trail leads to the Giant Spruce, recently named a state heritage tree. The fissure in the basalt known as Devils Churn provides exceptional wave action. A paved trail leads down from the parking lot. Cape Perpetua Campground is open May through September. The road to Cape Perpetua Day-Use Area and Stone Shelter winds upwards from the north side of the campground. At 802 feet, the viewpoint is spectacular. The stone shelter was built in the 1930s and served as a lookout for enemy ships and planes during World War II. The Visitor Center offers RV parking, exhibits, book/gift shop, and a theater. Wheelchair-accessible Holman Vista provides an excellent view of the Sutton Creek estuary. A recreation pass required. 187.3 - Heceta Beach Turnoff Turn here for Heceta Beach and Rhododendron Drive that rejoins Hwy 101 in the middle of Florence. 187.8 - Munsel Lake Road A short drive brings you to Munsel Lake Boat Ramp. A little farther is Ocean Dunes Golf Links, an 18-hole course. The road then meets North Fork Siuslaw This is a great place to stop for information on hiking, camping, and day-use areas on the Siuslaw National Forest. (541902-8526) 190.0 - Hwy 126 Junction Three Rivers Casino and Hotel are a mile inland along Highway 126. It is popular with both sport fishermen and crabbers. The Siuslaw River Bridge was one of five major bridges built in 1936, and like the others, replaced ferry service across the river. This combination steel double-leaf bascule drawspan is also noted for its many decorative touches. 191.7 - Ride the Dunes See the towering dunes and the off-road vehicles that climb them off South Jetty Road. Then experience the thrill by taking your own ride. Continue south on Hwy 101 to find two companies that offer dune rides. The Oregon Dunes Visitor Center is in Reedsport. All sites on the Oregon Dunes NRA require a recreation pass. To purchase a pass, VisitTheOregonCoast. com contact the Oregon Dunes Visitor Center (541-271-6000, milepost 211.4) or any Forest Service office. 191.7 - South Jetty Road South Jetty Road heads west from Hwy 101 into the dunes. Just before the foredunes, the road turns north. Several parking areas provide easy access to the beach, but there is no camping. Surfers and windsurfers often use this as a staging area, and out near the jetty people catch crab off the pier in season. The pier is also a dive site. A recreation pass required. 193.4 - Jessie M. Honeyman State Park This 522-acre park has a campground open year-round. Honeyman includes three lakes: Woahink on the east side of the highway, Cleawox, and Lily to the west. ATV access to the dunes from the campground allowed October 1 through April 30. Day-use facilities on Cleawox Lake (fee area) include picnic and swimming areas. Woahink Lake has a boat ramp and swimming and picnic facilities. In less than a mile, the road reaches Siltcoos Lake, tiny Westlake, and a public boat ramp. (541-997-3128) 196.9 - Siltcoos River Take the Westlake turnoff to the public boat ramp on Siltcoos Lake. A 3- to 4-mile canoe trail starts in Siltcoos Lake and moves along Siltcoos River through forest, dunes, and salt marsh to an estuary and the ocean. 198.0 - Siltcoos Rec Area On the east side a parking lot and hiking trails lead to Siltcoos Lake. On the west side, the road runs past three campgrounds: Lagoon, Waxmyrtle, and Driftwood II, which has OHV sand access. Hiking trails run throughout the area. The road ends in a parking lot with beach access. A recreation pass required.
