1955 was the first year of the OHV V8 Pontiac engine. 1981 was the last
year Pontiac built a V8, total built 14,624,886. After that, generic G.M.
engines were used. In 1961 Pontiac started reducing the thickness of the
cylinder block to reduce weight. From 1955-59 the engine cooling system
was of the “reverse flow” variety. This meant water was circulated through
the heads first, & then the block. 1955-63 engines used a cast iron timing
cover & a 4 bolt water pump. 1955-60 engines use the same crankshaft
flange & bell housing bolt pattern. A modern transmission requires an
adaptor. 1955-58 oil pumps are special, 1959-79 are all the same.
The deck height is the same on all Pontiac cylinder blocks- 10.24”. Conrod
centre to centre also stayed the same at 6.625”. All Pontiac engines listed
on the left use 1/2” size head bolts, although they are not all the same
length. These bolts screw into blind bosses in the outer walls of the block,
they do not enter the water jacket like a Chevrolet V8. This design eliminated water leaks & block distortion. Some early engines had a forged
crankshaft as standard [55-62] and fully floating gudgeon pins [55-57]. In
1959 cylinder blocks used side mounts for the first time. A block mounted
starter did not appear until late in 1963. In 1964 oiling to the rocker studs
through the cylinder head was eliminated in favour of hollow pushrods,
the snout of the crankshaft was made slightly longer & the flywheel mounting hub was enlarged. In 1965 the inlet manifold bolt holes were relocated
in the cyl heads & the Turbo 400 was introduced. In 1967 the bores were
increased to 4.12” and the 400 was born. Larger valve heads were also
used [2.11 & 1.77]. Also in this year 3 frost/core plugs per side were
introduced. 1968 saw the introduction of the high performance Ram-AirII with round exhaust ports. The 6.75” damper became std on all V8’s.
The Ram Air-IV came out in 1969 with many performance parts on the
engine. In 1970 the 455 was introduced by stroking the 428. By this time
the engine had 5 engine mount holes per side. From 1971 on, low lead
fuel was used & the compression ratio was dropped into the 8’s, a Unitized
electronic distributor was also used on some models later in the year. The
points & Unitized distribs were phased out in 1974, replaced with the
common HEI type. During the mid ‘75 production year blocks were redesigned with lighter main saddles & thinner cylinder walls. From mid 76,
some engines had only a “hub” and no harmonic balancer.

This March kit enables you to convert your
Pontiac to a Serpentine style belt system. The
pulleys & brackets are all made from Billet
aluminium in the USA, not China. If you have
air-conditioning, a different kit will be required.
This kit will not fit Chevrolet or Oldsmobile
powered Pontiacs. Your engine must have a 1968
or later 4 bolt balancer, without a “V” groove
built into the outer edge & a 1969 or newer 11
bolt 4.5” water pump. The pulleys are clear
powder coated for protection. The alternator &
water pump pulleys both have nose covers, for
that sleeker look. Other kits are available both
from March & Billet Specialties, but they may
be more expensive. Using a smaller diameter
crankshaft pulley will save horsepower, but the
water pump & alternator will turn slower- not
good if you spend a lot of time in traffic!

These pistons are cast, but have a higher silicon content in the metal. They are very strong & can be used with small clearances. The top ring will require approx 40%
higher end gap. Please read the instructions. Severe damage will take place otherwise. Slightly less igntion timing can be used with these pistons. To obtain the
compression ratios listed below, use a .010” deck height for piston, & a .039” thickness gasket. 389,428 & other pistons available to order.

Designed for street high-performance applications, Performer RPM cams provide power from 1500rpm to 6500rpm with the right cylinder heads. These hydraulic
lifter cams are dyno matched to Performer RPM manifolds for high-rpm horsepower while still maintaining acceptable low end torque. With 10-12 inches of manifold

Technical information: There are many variables involved when selecting p/rods for a performance
engine. Block height, cylinder head “thickness”, type of camshaft, rocker type used, lifter or
tappet plunger depth, etc. If you are unsure about the selection criteria, ask for a copy of page 293
from the Comp-Cams catalogue, when you order your valve train parts. Always check that a
clearance exists between your pushrods and the tunnels in the cylinder heads. Sometimes clearancing
is necessary. If you need an adjustable push-rod length checker, to help work out your push-rod
length, see the tools section in the Real Steel catalogue or on the website [accessories, page 12].

These heads are an all new design that uses the “D” type exhaust port for use with std “D” port
aftermarket exhaust systems. Performer Pontiac heads are designed for 1962-79 389/400/421/
428 & 455cu in V8 Pontiac engines with a 4.060” or larger cylinder bore. We stock these
heads in two combustion chamber sizes, 72cc & 87cc. Complete heads include- guide plates,
7/16” rocker studs, bronze valve guides, stainless valves, etc . The heat crossover is machined.
350 engines may require notching of the block for valve clearance. Head bolts BY8561 will
be required, as three of the head bolt bosses are raised higher than the std head.

The above seal is probably the best available if it will fit inside your spring.
The max O.D. is .675”. Check your top cap cannot strike the top of the seal at
full lift.
If oil can get down the valve guides into the cylinder, this will lower the octane rating of the fuel and
your engine could pink or detonate. Umbrella seals are normally used where the spring is a single type
and there is enough room inside the spring for the seal. This type of seal moves up and down with the
valve - shedding the oil. The Teflon & Viton seals, generally require the O.D. of the valve guide boss
to be machined. They fit tightly onto the guide boss, & do not move. Teflon is good to 450f & Viton
to 500f. For tools to machine the top of the guide see the accessories section page 12.
HEAD BOLTS FOR EDELBROCK CYL HEADS
Reduced wrenching hex & wide area flanged head eliminates the need for
valve train removal when retorquing the cylinder head. Tensile strength of
180,000psi. Complete with hardened parallel-ground washers.

non-adjustable. They can be replaced with these “straight”

These rockers are made from 8620 chromemoly steel in the
USA. The reciprocating weight of this rocker can be lighter
than bulky aluminium rockers. The design makes this rocker
very stiff with an accurate ratio, ensuring you get the full lift
at the valve. Roller tip reduces friction and wear. A power
increase will be obtained over std rockers. Do not exceed an
open pressure of 350 lbs.
