Aw come on..,
what is there left
to say about this, the Maser Birdcage?
With little doubt, this is the single most
desirable race car ever made! Only sixteen of these lovely cars, penned by
Giulio Alfieri, were ever made. Most of
the mechanicals were sourced from the retired racers; the 2.9 liter engine was derived
from the 250 S and the suspension was very similar
to that of the 250 F. The chassis was all new and a marvel
of engineering excellence. Made up of around 200 separate small
diameter tubes the space-frame construction was both light and
rigid. After the intricate assembly of tubes, some of which was visible through the windshield, it was quickly nick-named 'Birdcage'. Another novelty for Maserati was the fitting of disc brakes
all around. Alfieri mounted the engine behind the front axle for a
better weight distribution, and to reduce the frontal area it was
canted 45º. The aluminum body was constructed by Gentilini
and Allegretti and wrapped as tightly over the mechanicals as possible to improve the aerodynamics. This 'Birdcage' was officially
known as the Tipo 61. Particularly popular in the United States,
the customer racer finally brought the well deserved racing success
to Maserati. In 1960 and 1961 there was no stopping the likes of
Carroll Shelby, Jim Hall and Roger Penske. Proving the car's superb handling, Stirling Moss and Dan Gurney piloted a

This model, built by
MiniChamps of Germany,
is a great example of model
making. It’s just right! And the
size does matter, since you don’t need glasses to
feast on all the features! 12 ½” long, 5” wide, the tire’s have a
2 3⁄8” Ø. Bonnet and trunk lid opens. And the view is astounding! (We also have the smaller 1:18 scale version on next page).

they chose 1:200
scale, which is nice because you can truly see
how those birds grew, incrementally, as the technology and passenger
count steadily grew, without cluttering your space
too badly. I mean, when
you realize that the fuselage of a DC-2 is about as
large as the tail engine nacelle of a DC-10, you get
the drift… Despite
the diminutive
size of some of
these, the amount of
detail is fabulous. But
then, that’s our job, to
sort it all out for you! The
Fighter planes are all 1:72
scale, which demonstrates
a similar growth in aircraft size. No wonder old
aircraft carriers had to be
retired! You’ll marvel at
these models!

Douglas DC-3 Dakota
Limited Edition This fabulous and venerable aircraft certainly belongs in
the pantheon of all-time greats! Thousands were produced from the end of
WWII well into the 1950’s, used by civilian, military, dope-smugglers, and
private. Utterly reliable, you could fly and land them damned near anywhere. I even got some hours in on N-74 out of Oakland… This model is
truly magnificent, in that it’s made entirely of aluminum, with etched metal
sheets and rivets. Has extreme engine details, props, windows and landing

Junkers JU52 “Iron Annie” One of the
most famous German transport of the war.
Built of corrugated metal skin. Served as an airliner for many nations. It served as a mail carrier
in China, and, fitted with floats, hauled lumber
in remote places in Canada. Its most common work,
however, was done with the German Lufthansa. Equipped with luxuries like typewriters and oxygen masks, the JU52 could fly from Berlin to Rome in eight hours over
the Alps, an impressive feat for contemporary aircraft, let alone an airliner. In World
War II, the JU52 served in every theater in which Germany participated. Some civilian JU52s are still flying in Switzerland and South America! This model is made
with flat and corrugated metal sheet over a lightweight frame. Has a fully detailed

Ford TriMotor Goose Designed by
William B. Stout. In 1925, Ford bought
Stout and his Junkers influenced aircraft
designs. Ford adapted the single-engined
Stout with three Wright (later, more powerful Pratt & Whitney) air-cooled radials.
The Tin Goose was constructed of aluminum, corrugated for extra strength.
Even the control surfaces were made of the
same materials. The control wires for the
elevator and rudder were strung along the
external surface. Similarly, engine gauges
were mounted externally, on the engine
pods, to be monitored by the pilot by
looking through the windscreens! A total
of 199 TriMotors were built between
1926-33, and more than 100 airlines of
the world flew ‘em. On 27-28 November
1929, Admiral Richard E. Byrd and his
crew made the first flight over the South
Pole in a Tin Goose named the Floyd Bennett. As of 2007, there are still 18 in existence, of which five are still flying! Model

Architect’s Stand-Up Desk I reckon today they’d call this a
workstation, but in its day, you’d find a floor tightly organized
with rows of these, with gifted men, skilled draftsmen all, busily
drawing plans. Even their lettering resembled calligraphy! They
stood, leaned, lounged up against this stand-up table, with
the adjustable working surface tilted to their
liking. Some would use a tall stool, with one leg on
the ground; these weren’t sit-down jobs. This unit has
an, adjustable, to three tilting positions, working surface,
along with two collapsible wings, one on either side, to add
space if needed, three shallow drawers to store pens, pencils,
rulers and etc., and then two vertical storage slots on either side,
for storing notebooks, and paper. Underneath those slots is a full
width drawing shelf, for the large flats. This is a very solidly constructed desk, made of fine cherry and birch, with solid and
heavy hardware, which is a delight to have in your space. And if
you have backache problems, you’ll find that doing office
tedium is much easier and healthier standing up! I’ll vouch for
it, having gone to a stand-up
desk myself. The desk measures

FORCES of VALOR 1:32 scale These folks burst onto
the scene a few years ago and have caused a real stir in the industry. The models are nothing short of gorgeous! They had
developed a new form of die-casting metal, that allowed
them to make the models a lot lighter in physical weight, at
the same time refining the details another big notch. (I’ve
had arguments with a variety of customers that claimed the
stuff was made of plastic. In exasperation, I challenged them
to light their Zippo and see if it would melt… Of course it
didn’t.) They also do the most fabulous paint jobs.

Wiking Battle Fleet 1:1250 scale Wiking, known today for their stunning little
1:87 scale model cars, began producing ship models in the 1930s. These metal ships
were made in 1:1250 scale. Before and during World War II they were used by the
German military for training purposes. This particular fleet of nine warships, led by the
Graf Spee, were built during WWII, and are as rare as hen’s teeth. We will not break up
this little collection! The largest of the waterline models here is 6” and the smallest 3 3⁄8”.

the name of “Minichamps” is
about the only maker of
truly fine and exquisite model
motorcycles! There are lotsa
bikes coming out of China,
mostly Indians and Harleys, that
are real junk. Spokes that are way
too fat, scale that’s out of whack,
sloppily built. We wouldn’t insult you with crap like that.
That’s why we stick to Paul’s
Model Art. PMA’s problem
is that their delivery sucks,
and so were always waiting
for stock. Since we prefer
the older, classic bikes, we
only offer what’s in stock at
the time of each catalog printing. These all wind up being limited editions, so grab ‘em when we

wanna get a driving license, you have to pay to go
to school. Being German, they are overly thorough, naturally, to the point of being a pain…
Along with actual behind the wheel instruction,
you get a thorough “ground school,” which includes internal combustion theory; including
two-cycle, and four-cycle engines, both carbureted
and injected. In addition, you must learn how a
transmission functions. To that end, these interesting cut-away models of the various units are

Our favorite model car maker. Starting with
the Trossi Black Prince back a decade ago,
which won them the Model of the Year prize,
till today with many more exquisite models,
virtually all of them have won the top prizes
each year—with each new model being more
fantastic and detailed than the last. There are
no finer, manufactured, or for that matter
hand-built cars, in these scales made.., Period!
At the point where CMC exceeded 1000 individual parts per car, in such a small scale,
our minds were blown. In their Fangio’s
1957 Maserati 250 F, the tail-cone has 301
individually hand-set rivets, partly with washers, alone… Jeez, what next?! The only problem with this constant striving for perfection,
naturally, is that production suffers. It takes
three months to train “mechanics” at the factory, and the factory is only so big. Let it be
said, there won’t be buyer’s remorse on any
car—we guarantee it.

built. It was powered by a 3.3 liter inline,
twin overhead cam, 8-cylinder, supercharged engine, pumping out over
200 hp. The Type 57 SC Atlantic was the
fastest street car of its time, capable of
speeds north of 200 Kmh. No other car
was comparable to the elegance and perfection of this breathtaking two-seater.
The extraordinary and painstaking attention to details, are what make this a truly

and still is a formidable street car. The irony
is that most people only had the chance to
see it from behind, since the fastest BMW
only ran 170 km/h, the fastest Porsche 200
km/h. The Uhlenhaut Coupé at nearly 300

and composed of 1,817 single parts… The
greenhouse resembles
an aircraft cockpit.

ith this small, heavy, beautifully realized MicroRacer, Schuco, in 1954, began the single most
successful “family” of products in its history. All share
the same running gear: simple open-wheeled racing
die-cast components, tires, rubber bumper, clockwork
and so forth! Done in the die-cast-making process,
many small and intricate shapes can be made fairly rapidly and with great accuracy. The basic metal component is zinc. All Lilliput Micro-Racer castings are
hand-trimmed, burnished, pickled, and then primed
and painted with automotive paints to the RAL color
standards. One of the great Schuco innovations was
that you could “freewheel” the Micro-Racers with the
spring wound or unwound, without damage to the
gears or mainspring, rolling it forward or backwards!
The name “Micro” came not from the diminutive size
of the cars (1:45 scale), but rather from the microthreaded steering adjustment, usually the tailpipe of
the car. This meant, that so long as the tires were
round, one could set hairpin-sharp courses. The whole
key to these little marvels was that they were: tiny,
heavy, and had steel mainsprings. Couple that with
sticky, fat rubber tires for directional stability, and you
could go screaming across your parquet floors at speeds
(actual) up to 35mph! And so that Mother wouldn’t
yell at us when they hit the furniture, all Micro’s were
equipped with rubber bumpers on their noses.

Böhm Hot Air Engines
Hermann Böhm and Georg Bauernfeind have developed the sweetest hotair-engines (aka Stirling) and vacuum
motors on the planet. They’ve taken
this ancient Egyptian principle to
new, highly aesthetic and whimsical
heights, with their beautiful machine
work and choices of metals; highly
polished brass, aluminum, and stainless steel.
How it works: the Stirling engine is a
closed cycle, it contains a fixed mass of
gas called the “working fluid,” most
commonly air. In normal operation,
the engine is sealed and no gas enters
or leaves the engine. No valves are required, unlike other types of piston engines. The Stirling engine, like most
heat engines, cycles through four main
processes: cooling, compression, heating and expansion. This is accomplished by moving the gas back and
forth between hot and cold heat exchangers. The hot heat exchanger is in
thermal contact with an external heat
source, such as a fuel burner, and the
cold heat exchanger being in thermal
contact with an external heat sink,
such as air fins. A change in gas temperature will cause a corresponding
change in gas pressure, while the motion of the piston causes the gas to be
alternately expanded and compressed.

Böhm A1 AutoStirling Limited Edition
Hermann just couldn’t help himself, and had to build a
functional automobile around one of his Stirling engines… And what a splendid car it is! Using his Model
HB11 engine, he built this old-time three-wheeler
around it. The steering works, of course, and then there
are three-speeds. Hermann suggests Slow for tabletop
driving, and the other two speeds for running on the
floor. As exquisitely made as all of his work, with highly
polished aluminum, cmc-turned brass components,
that he left unpolished for contrast. Nice rubber tyres to
grip the road, and even a trailer hitch, for the next item
he’ll make: yup, a trailer. Hermann’s plan is to come out
with a whole series of Stirling-powered autos as time
goes on. We can’t wait to have some races. This beauty

Russian Sewing Machine Of all the toys we’ve handled in the
last 25 years, nothing pleased us as much as these wonderful little
sewing machines. We had ‘em in our San Francisco store. Over time
it became increasingly difficult to find them. A pallet full in Latvia, a
couple of cases in Kiev, and so on. Recently a contact in Germany
actually had ordered a whole bunch made new. Well, he sent the
money, but got stiffed on the goods: no sewing machines! Frustrated, since we still have back-orders from 2 years ago, I happened
to chat with an old Eastern Bloc hand who deals in Russian goods,
and guess what! He had just driven there pulling a trailer and
brought back a modest bunch. We took ‘em all! These machines really sew! Sew well, with a chain stitch. Use a nr. 9 needle. All cast
metal with classic gold trim, a large hand wheel with crank,
mounted in a wooden base with bobbin compartment. A great and

plastic darts. Stick one in the barrel until it clicks, and you’re

Better than any cheesy plastic dart gun I had as a kid,

My all-time favorite tin toy! Yup, it floats. Wind up the
clockwork motor, aft, and a linkage makes the little
guy in the boat pull on the oars, (make sure the slots
on the oars are placed onto the pins correctly!), and that
motion will, astonishingly propel the craft through the
water! (After use in water, make sure you dry it off and

Lehmann Ikarus 653 120th Anniversary Replica
Ltd. Ed. of 2500 Ernst Lehmann decided to build this
fabulous model to replicate
the first postal flight
(AirMail) in February 1912,
by Hermann Pentz in the
Hans Grade Monoplane.
The wings are made of a delicate tinplate “frame” with
heavy kraftpaper membrane, serving as the wing surface.
The wings are guy-wired to the fuselage with thin wire.
The power plant is a wind-up spiral-spring affair, with
visible down-gearing to the propeller. It takes more than
100 painstaking steps to construct one of these stunningly beautiful, historical airplanes. This Limited
Edition of 2500 pieces was made in 2001. There are
damned few to be had! Made in Germany! The bird
measures: 14” wingspan, 11” from spinner to tail Comes
complete with box, booklet, and certificate of authenticity.

THE INSECT ART of T.J.McDERMOTT
Trained as a wooden boat builder in Maine, he ran
his own boatbuilding shop in Yarmouth Maine for ten years. Then he started carving name-boards for boats, and name-boards
soon became its own business, as TJ began carving signs, nationally and internationally, for townships, municipal buildings, and
specialty retailers. At some point TJ got his snoot full of having to deal with typically egotistical art directors, on the carved signage, and focused his work on creating one-of-a-kind pieces of art. Weathervanes, sculptures in wood, stone, multi media, and
yes, Bugs! He started an art gallery in Portland, Maine, as a way to gain more exposure for his work. But back to the bugs! As
he was cleaning up his studio one day, he found some desiccated insects among the sawdust, and a beetle caught his eye: the
colors were fantastic, and so he was off and running. Hooked up with a insect-specimen seller in the Philippines, whom he
would send 50 bucks, and would get back these gorgeous, dried, and carefully wrapped beetles, dragonflies, grasshoppers, et
al., usually destined for entomological researchers and collectors. He found, with experimentation, that if he rehydrated the bugs,
he could gently move their legs, wings, and whatever other extremities, into various positions. He would then pin them in
these new positions to a board, until they were completely dry again.., and voilà, the art presented itself. Not only are the compositions stunning, the bugs are even more so! Who would’ve believed the fantastic color array? Who has ever seen a grasshopper’s wing, to discern the delicate and subtle colorations? These compositions are done with a sense of humor, by having bugs,
surrounding a stone, or other object, and seemingly either protecting or scrambling for it. Please note that each piece is a one-ofa-kind piece, and when TJ makes a duplicate, the stones don’t always, by necessity, match the one we’ve photographed…
