CANS OF THE YEAR 2014
An exceptional three-piece tinplate
coffee can from Daiwa in Japan has
won the canmaking industry’s top
accolade this year. Mónica Higuera
reviews the Can of the Year contenders
can for Tectron water proofer from
Implus Corporation. Cans are printed
in-line in up to eight colours on highspeed offset decorators.
DSC printing
technology does not use
water or alcohol,
reducing hazardous
wastes.
Exal Corporation
in the US received
Gold in the Bottles
category.
Aluminium bottle
manufacturing
has long had issues related to the
behaviour of the inks in the neck area,
but Exal’s impact-extruded bottle for
Cedar Ridge Apple Ranch’s cider exploit
these to good effect, using a clear
basecoat and a glossy overvarnish.
Judges awarded Gold in Ends, Caps
and Closures to Can-Pack in Poland.
Metal crowns for bottles are becoming
more sophisticated, and the closure for
Higuli beer features embossing that is
registered with the
customer’s logo,
providing a premium
quality look.

ittle did Hollywood action stars
Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce
Willis know when appearing
earlier this year in a Japanese TV
commercial campaign for Kowa
Pharmaceutical’s Powered Coffee that
the can they were drinking from will be
later winning the canmaking industry’s
Can of the Year title in 2014.
Selected by a panel of expert judges
near The Canmaker magazine’s offices
in the UK, the 20cl three-piece welded
tinplate can features detailed
decoration, registered embossing and an
aluminium easy-open end.
Produced by Daiwa’s subsidiary
Sanwha, the canned drink is sold
through retailers rather than the
vending machines commonly used for
the large ready-to-drink (RTD) canned
coffee market.
Judges were impressed by the can’s
attention to detail. “This can is just
stunning. I couldn’t stop myself holding
and touching it. This packaging feels
active,” said a judge.
The canned coffee is marketed as
an energy drink that helps consumers
to recover from physical exhaustion,
and the can’s design expresses a
strong image and combines it with
foaming ink, gravure printing and
embossing.
Daiwa was amongst the contenders
for the Can of the Year title after taking
Gold in the Beverage three-piece
category.
Winner of the Beverage two-piece
category was Rexam USA for its D&I
aluminium cap can for Monster Energy
drink featuring a tactile ink and
varnish.
Judges said the recloseable can had
the ‘Wow’ factor and was a stunning
piece of canmaking art, that is further
enhanced by the use of a re-closeable
twist-off cap.
In the Aerosol can category Gold
went to DS Containers in the US for its
two-piece drawn polymer-coated steel

Crown Aerosols & Speciality
Packaging in the UK was the winner in
the Food three-piece category for a
decorative tinplate tin with peelable end
and slip lid for Bewley’s coffee sold by
Fortnum & Mason. The container is
based on an existing body using a
membrane seal that was customised
with an easy-grip lid and with a
streamlined step feature that closes
with a reassuring ‘click’.
The brief was to create a speciality
tin for premium coffee that stood out
from the crowd. Detailed body
embossing and ornate design work
further enhanced the sense of quality;
while the use of deep rich rose gold,
bronze, copper and gold metallic elevate
the product to ‘speciality’ status.
Brazil’s Metalgráfica Renner took
Gold in Food two-piece with a drawn
tinplate can with recloseable lid for
Komdelli pâté by Fábrica de Conservas
de Pescado. The can features two types
of easy-open ends — one of plastics and
one with an aluminium membrane.
These are then covered with a printed
tinplate lid which allows the can to be
re-sealed. The can’s conical shape
reduces warehouse space and
transportation costs before filling.

CANS OF THE YEAR 2014
In the Fancy can category Gold went
to GM Metal Packaging in Hong Kong
for its tinplate can shaped like a book
with hinged lid for Monarch tea.
The judges unanimously agreed this
tin was a stunning piece of canmaking
craft. The can demonstrates the skilled
use of high-end lithography to
reproduce the painting in an
imaginative design, and went on to win
Gold in Decoration & Print Quality.
“It’s a paragon of decoration. It’s a
work of art,” said one of the judges. “This
takes a man with an eye for detail.
“This is a piece of craftwork. I can
stare at it for hours. The portraits…
the fit in terms of embossing. The
inside printing matches – you don’t
have to do that. And this is made of six
pieces.”
All of the shortlisted entries were on
display at The Canmaker Summit last

Like a rectangular container
developed earlier by Brasilata, the pail
features a series of sawtooth-shaped
beads that absorb any impacts without
rupture, enabling a 0.30mm gauge
tinplate to be used rather than 0.34mm.
Double seams instead of triple seams,
also help with material reduction.
“To make a can that is stronger and
cheaper is quite memorable,” said a
judge.

CANS OF THE YEAR 2014
GM Metal Packaging’s Sunil Gidumal
received two Golds and the Delegates’
Choice award from publisher of The
Canmaker Allan Sayers
Crown won four awards at the Cans of the
Year 2014 and were received from Allan
Sayers by Robert Bourque, Crown Beverage
Packaging China’s vice president
month in Hong Kong where delegates
also found the quality of the bookshaped can remarkable, with GM Metal
Packaging winning the Delegates’
Choice award.
The above cans are all in commercial
production. In the Prototype category,
this year’s Gold award was for a metal
crown from Packaging Products del
Peru (PPP).
“This is very smart, and clever,” said
another judge. The crown for beer
bottles features a liner applied in a ring
that saves 25 percent material without
affecting sealing performance, and is
due to be commercial soon.
PPP’s development was also
recognised with a Gold in the
Sustainability category for the
remarkable savings this closure allows.
With brewer SABMiller alone using
about 45 billion crowns a year, the
savings can be immense.
The company that scooped the
highest number of titles this year was
Crown with four awards, with its
Speciality canmaking division taking
Gold in Food three-piece, Silver and
Bronze in Decoration & Print Quality;
and Crown Bevcan Europe winning
Silver in Beverage two-piece.
Rexam won three awards: Gold and
Bronze in Beverage two-piece; and
Silver in Bottles.

winners next month in The Canmaker.
