Food inspector gets kick out of teaching safety

be a pretty good guy.
He admits adding some of his own tools
to the course.
“I want to present this course in a way
that people will remember, so I’ve added
my own things to them to make it more
interesting.”
While public health agencies offer
similar training, Scott says his services are
available when and where people want it.
Though he first gave Food Safe training
at Wollaston Lake, it was Moxie’s Restaurant that encouraged him to start the
business.
“They approached me when they were
closed for renovations and wanted all of
their staff to take the training.”
Since then, he’s taught the course to staff
from places like the Saskatchewan Legislature, McDonalds, A&W, Rock of Ages
Church, and various banquet rooms, care
homes and day cares.
Targeting restaurant owners in his initial
advertising, he was surprised but pleased
with the response.
“The reaction I mostly got was, ‘You’re
an entrepreneur doing this on your own?
Cool!’ Then it was, ‘When you can teach
it?’
“It’s what I was hoping for and I think
the more people who are aware of it and
hear about it, the more people will want to
take advantage of it.”
Scott is currently working on setting a
date for the course in January.

partner is Ella, is actually one of the many
visual tools Russell Scott enjoys using
as he teaches people about food safety. A
public health inspector for more than two
decades, Scott started his business, Food
Safety 1st, to further his belief in proper
food handling.

“Anybody who eats food wants to make
sure it’s safe and a lot of our meals are restaurant meals so that’s who I’m basically
targeting. But anybody who is interested
in food handling would find this course
valuable.
“I find ways to help people understand
the severity of food borne illness or food
poisoning and the fact that there are
simples steps that can be taken to avoid it.
These are steps that aren’t that time-consuming,” he adds.
