SALAT "The purification of mind and soul" What is Salat? • It’s one of the Five Pillars of Islam • It’s a muslim form of formal worship • Salat is offered 5 times daily • Besides these 5 obligatory prayers, there are other types of prayers which are optional. What is Salat? • Of all religious obligations, Islam has laid greatest emphasis on the institution of Salat • Spiritual side and worldly side Postures of Salat • Standing is called Qiyam Postures of Salat • Bowing down is called Ruku Postures of Salat • Prostration is called Sajdah Postures of Salat • Sitting is called Qa’dah Salat • Salat is consisted with units – one unit is rak’ah and more than one unit is raka’at • There are two sajdahs in each rak’ah • During each posture prescribed, phrases are to be recited in Arabic. Salat • Every muslim is required to memorize these versus along with its meaning so that the worshipper knows what he/she is saying to his Lord during the Salat. Why is Salat so Important? • Helps us get rid of sins • It Purifies us • Brings us towards Allah • Purifies the heart and soul What the Holy Quran Says: • The Holy Quran mentions this distinctive quality of Salat by saying: Recite that which has been revealed to you of the Book and observe Prayer. Surely Prayer restrains one from indecency and manifest evil. Verily, the remembrance of Allah possesses the highest beneficence. And Allah knows what you do. (29:46) • The Quran says: Surely those who follow the Book of Allah and observe Prayer and spend out of that which we have provided for them, secretly and openly, are pursuing a commerce that suffers no loss, for Allah will give them their full reward, and will add to them out of His bounty. He is surely, Most Forgiving, Most Appreciating. (35:30-31) What the Holy Prophet (pbuh) said: • Salat is the pinnacle of the spiritual of the believer • It’s the highest form of Divine worship • Prayer brings the believer into communion with his Lord • Sincere prayer never goes in vain • Sincerity and humility are the essence of prayer: Successful indeed are the believers, who are humble in their Prayers. (23:2-3) Alive vs Order • Deep spiritual experience • Sublime happiness • Signs of Prayer being alive • Praying in formality • Order • Keeping noble objective Prayer Timings • For each of the five obligatory Prayers, there is an appointed time fixed in relation to the sun's position. • Fajr • Zhuhr • Asr • Maghrib • Ishaa Conditions for Prayer • Determination of Intention: • Prior to the beginning of the Prayer • Offered during it’s correct time • One should be clean in body and, as far as possible, in mind and spirit also. • Properly covered • Qibla Direction Physical Benefits of Salat • • • • • • • • • Arthritis Cholesterol Indigestion Increase flow of blood Fresh blood supply Relaxation Hadith of the Holy Prophet Cartilage Cure is in SALAT Spiritual Benefits of Salat • Remembrance of God surcharged with love truly becomes the worshippers food which they cannot survive and which they guard and watch constantly • Substitute for nourishment • Salat generates freshness • New life – Final stage Huzoor’s Sermon • Praying used for worldly desires • After belief in him, God ordained that the second significance is that of salat • Salat offered in devoid of Taqwa • Worldly matters ruins physical and mental health Conclusion • Salat should be offered in congregation, should be offered regularly, and should be offered on time. • Allah Almighty says: Establish prayer and give Zakat and prostrate with those who bow before God. • Held more accountable • Safeguarding our lives and of those around us • What is expected of us?
