Summer Newsletter 2016 Board of Directors Connie Brodt Eve Bruce Allison Closson Nancy Driscoll Erica Eggers Brenda Hockaday Kelli Kanemoto Dr. Kim Lane Lyndy Lubbers Julie McVicker Jenny Morrow Anjanet Mort Mary Ellen O’Rell Sarah Schey Janie Waters Karen Wood Executive Director Kate Gaddis Program Director Libby FitzGibbons Events & Marketing Wendy Hughes The Threads of AWW by Kate Gaddis It has been said that “Love is the thread with which we connect to the world.” This year, we are celebrating the many ways in which we are connected to one another, and how these threads ultimately can make a big difference in our community. Each of us alone can do a little, but when we are woven together into a tapestry created in love, we can effect change in our community and help more women in need. There are many threads of AWW, each of which are integral to the organization: you - our generous donors, our tireless volunteers and board of directors, and our hard working staff. Together, we plan events, fundraise, and brainstorm all for a greater good – to help women and families in need in our community. Our work has provided assistance to countless women and their families. In 2015, we granted over $230,000 to over 200 women, and we are on pace to give even more in 2016. AWW has helped women from all walks of life in a myriad of ways. Here is a small sampling from the past year: “Robin,” who suffers from MS, was in terrible pain in her old bed and didn’t have the savings to purchase a new one. AWW bought her a new bed so she could rest easy again. “Cathyrn” had to take unpaid time off from work to care for her dying father. AWW paid her utilities for one month to help bridge the financial gap. AWW paid for childcare for two children while their mother was recovering from an auto accident. “Samantha” was diagnosed with a brain tumor and had to take time off from work to undergo radiation treatment. AWW paid her rent for two months so she could focus on her health. These stories are all real women whose lives have been touched by AWW. We are able to do this good work because of the help of each of you. Please consider helping us in our mission to improve the lives of women and families in the community when they are faced with an unexpected crisis. Make a donation, volunteer to help with an event or on a committee, or donate clothing or household goods to us through our partners at Fabulous Finds and Pacific Auction. This summer we are hosting a “Hope for Tomorrow” challenge. Hope for Tomorrow is our monthly giving program: a simple, automatic giving option that will help maximize your support of AWW. We are hoping to enroll 25 individuals in our monthly giving program in the next two months. Can you help? Please sign up at www.awomanswork.org/donate. We appreciate your support! Message from the AWW Board Chair, Janie Waters I have had the honor and privilege of being a part of A Woman’s Work from its beginning 13 years ago. The initial campaign was to raise $100 from 100 women in 100 days…and you know the rest! We raised $10,000 in 10 days! This year we plan to give over $225,000 to women and their families in our community, and all we ask is that they pay an act of kindness forward. What a gift to a woman and her family! We are mindful every day of your generosity, and strive to be good stewards of the money entrusted to us. Our 13th annual Anniversary Luncheon is coming in September. The luncheon is always a fun event that includes a live and silent auction, and of course, a chance to enjoy lunch with friends. One of the most poignant times of the luncheon, is when we hear from our Janie Waters grant recipients. As the beneficiaries of your generosity tell their story of how A Woman’s Work changed their life we are reminded that each of us can make a difference in the life of someone else! One of the easiest ways to be a “life-changer” is to participate in Hope for Tomorrow. This approach lets you designate an amount of money to be charged to your credit card, or an automatic deduction from a checking account, on a scheduled basis. In addition, it gives AWW a consistent revenue stream. You can register for Hope for Tomorrow at www.awomanswork.org/donate. This is an effortless way to support AWW and the added benefit is as a donor you are empowered to make referrals if you know of someone who needs a hand-up! If you have a friend or family member, who lives or works in the St. Vrain Valley School District attendance area, and who is having a financial crisis due to unforeseen circumstances, please call the AWW office. I hope to see you at the luncheon on September 30th; where we will laugh together and cry together, and celebrate women supporting women! Welcome our newest Board Members L - R: Eve Bruce, Erica Eggers, Dr. Kim Lane, Julie McVicker, Mary Ellen O’Rell Do you know an inspiring woman? As part of our 13th Anniversary celebration this fall, A W oman’s W ork will be honoring a woman living or working in the St. Vrain Valley area who exemplifies the qualities that the organization holds near and dear – community involvement and a passion for helping women and families in our community. T he AW W W oman of the Y ear will be announced at our 13th Anniversary Luncheon on Friday, September 30th. T o make a nomination, visit www.awomanswork.org/nominations before July 29. Driving for Success Driving for Success (DFS) is a new AWW program which provides reliable transportation to select women and their families who are in immediate need. Given a gap in local services, reliable transportation has been identified as a critical need in the St. Vrain Valley. AWW has experienced a significant increase in grants related to car purchases and developed this program to provide select grant recipients with reliable vehicles as well as supportive services and resources. Supporters at our Evening of Great Tastes fundraiser in April 2016 donated $24,120 to launch this program! The program utilizes the standard AWW grant request process with our donors and referring partner organizations, along with a supplemental inquiry to help the AWW Board determine the appropriateness of issuing a grant to the woman in need. DFS provides the grant recipient a vehicle that has an estimated value of roughly $3,000 to $3,500. The grant also includes tutorials, tools and services to assist the woman in getting off to a good start owning her new vehicle. Many thanks to Pacific Auction, All American Auto Repair, Grease Monkey, and Ace Hardware for your partnership in this exciting new endeavor. If you are interested in donating to our DFS program, please contact Kate at [email protected] or at 303.827.7085. Recipient Stories Every day, we touch the lives of so many women and their struggles are real and heart wrenching. Being able to assist them when they need it most, we are able to provide hope during a difficult time. Here are two stories of women that we have been able to help this year through your generous contributions. When “Brianna’s” family van broke down and required repairs that were more than the value of the vehicle, AWW stepped in to assist. Brianna had already paid for a couple thousand dollars in repairs and had no additional money to contribute toward a car. Not having reliable transportation could have resulted in Brianna losing her employment and her ability to apply for a manager position to better support her family. A Woman’s Work helped her to pay for a reliable used car with a “Driving for Success” grant and the tradein from her existing car. After she purchased her car from our partner Pacific Auction, she received a car maintenance tutorial from All American Auto, oil change from Grease Monkey and a car kit from Ace Hardware – all compliments of our Driving for Success partners. “Isabella” was recently diagnosed with a brain tumor which created sudden and severe hearing loss, headaches and balance problems. This coincided with the loss of her stable job, due to mistakes made because of the tumor pressing on her brain stem. A Woman’s Work paid Isabella’s rent for two months while she received treatment for the tumor so she could have some respite and peace of mind while she planned for more affordable living arrangements and adjusted to a new life which might include limited mobility and smaller income. “Knowing that I have two months to make difficult decisions without the immediate stress of rent payments is a very rare and humbling gift and offered me a way to be pragmatic, prepared and grounded with dignity and self-respect while I allow space once again for my resiliency to grow,” said Isabella. Clarissa Edelen, owner of Fabulous Finds Upscale Consignments, has conceptualized a way to benefit women in need in the community by providing fabulous apparel at fabulous prices in a new Fabulous Finds Outlet. “I want to be that friend that can help lift a burden at a difficult moment in time.” says Clarissa “ A Woman’s Work is the perfect organization to help me do just that!” Through the sale of merchandise donated by Fabulous Finds consigners and AWW volunteers to help run the store, the Fabulous Finds Outlet will generate proceeds to bolster what AWW can do to help local women and their families. The main store already provides some financial support when consigners donate items to A Woman's Work. However, the new outlet store is a retail resale shop that will provide a percentage of all sales to AWW. Many non-profit organizations open retail resale stores to support administrative and program costs. In this situation, AWW reaps the advantages of a high quality resale entity without carrying the overhead costs. It also provides new volunteer opportunities for AWW supporters. By providing volunteer help in the store, AWW is strengthening the alliance and reducing overhead costs that could translate into higher store proceeds down the road. The outlet store shares a space with Page Two Café in Gunbarrel at 6565 Gunpark Drive offering customers the option to both shop and enjoy time out with friends for lunch or coffee.
