When Raquel first came to El Centro de la Raza, she was very quiet and reserved, keeping her ideas to herself and steering clear of many activities. However, YJRT coordinator Cristina Jimenez noticed in her meetings with Raquel that Raquel had great ideas and a desire to participate more. Cristina’s guidance helped Raquel to begin to vocalize her ideas, share her talents and skills, and participate more actively in group projects and events. Raquel’s growth could not have come at a better time, as her family came upon serious harship when her parents were injured in a car accident and forced to stop working. Raquel used the skills and confidence she gained through the YJRT program to secure part-time employment to help her family through this time. Raquel’s senior year of high school was tumultuous as she balanced helping her family with completing her school work. Raquel’s incredible hard work and perseverance however brought a triumphant end to the 2014 school year. She received her high school diploma from Franklin High School! Raquel’s parents slowly returned to work, and Raquel was able to apply to local colleges to continue her education. 2014 ANNUAL REPORT | 5 2014 Accomplishments & Highlights Capital Improvements We have raised 97% of the funding needed to complete the $45M for the Plaza Roberto Maestas project.
