ORLANDO FESTIVAL 2015 (20 - 30 AUGUST)
The internationally renowned Orlando Festival was founded in 1982 by cellist Stefan
Metz of the former Orlando Quartet. Since its beginning the Orlando Festival has
successfully focussed on the art of chamber music. The intense work in a nice and
cosy atmosphere, with concerts, lectures, lessons, coachings, master classes and other
events has proven to be very beneficial to the development of young professionals,
conservatory students and (active and passive) amateurs. The Orlando Festival has a
glorious tradition of inviting interesting experienced musicians and coaches.
Since 2014 the Orlando Festival also hosts the Orlando Competition, an international
chamber music competition, the 2015 edition is for piano trios.
The 2015 edition of the Orlando Festival offers some new perspectives:
• The (re-) birth of artistic director Henk Guittart’s Gruppo Montebello, an ensemble of
about ten hand-picked musicians, performing and recording compositions from the
Archives of the Viennese Society for Private Musical Performances, concentrating
on chamber ensemble arrangements of orchestral pieces. The program highlights
Gustav Mahler’s Fourth Symphony (1900) and Arnold Schoenberg’s late-romantic
song cycle op.8 (1903-1905). All members of the Gruppo Montebello will also
perform in various smaller combinations and teach ensembles and individuals.
• A fresh and unique approach of the Master Class, by inviting two teachers per
master class and by offering daily guidance for several physical and mental aspects
of music making.
• A Composer in Residence. Without composers there would be no music. The
Orlando Festival has invited composer Robin de Raaff as its guest of honor. He
will attend rehearsals of his various chamber music works, culminating in the first
performance of his work composed for the Gruppo Montebello.
• A wide variety of repertoire from three centuries, ranging from piano solo works
to large ensemble.
• In addition to the usual ensemble coachings the Orlando Festival now also offers
the possibility to have individual instrumental lessons.
ORLANDO COMPETITION 2015 (20-22 AUGUST)
The Orlando Competition strives to be a gentle and stimulating example of the
phenomenon of competing, by asking all competing ensembles to perform during all
three rounds and allowing the ensembles in the first and second rounds as well as in the
finals to freely choose their preferred compositions from the canon of the repertoire.
An important part of those three prizes is a fully scholar-shipped participation in the
2015 Orlando Festival, either in the Master Class, or in the Orlando Academy. And all
ensembles admitted to the Competition but not admitted to the final round will get a
partly scholar-shipped participation in the Orlando Academy.
