Brochure - Newport Music Festival
48th Season
July 8-24, 2016
A Welcome to the 48th Season
Dear Friends and Music Lovers,
The 2016 Newport Music Festival is a season of new introductions.
First, it is my great honor to introduce Ms. Virginia Gambale, the eighth
Board President in the Festival’s history. Virginia has been a board member
since 2006 and an officer since 2013. She is a successful investor and technology leader, and studied
piano at both The Juilliard School and The Hartt School of Music. Given
her background in both music and business leadership, it would be hard to
imagine a person better suited to help lead the Newport Music Festival to a
more glorious future.
The second introduction will be the revolutionary Bogányi Grand Piano, an
invention that will almost certainly change the future of classical music. On
Virginia Gambale
July 9th at The Breakers, pianist and innovator Gergely Bogányi will present
the North American debut of the Bogányi Grand Piano. Gergely Bogányi exemplifies the type of
artist the Festival searches the world for, so that audiences can experience the very best.
We have a splendid season in store for you filled with beautiful music featuring your favorite artists
and composers. A 10-concert Rachmaninoff Series will feature many of the Russian composer’s
most famous and rare works. We’ll also introduce several new artists to the “Family of Artists,”
including four singers from Palm Beach Opera’s Benenson Young Artist Program, vocalists Michael
Andrew and Michelle Knight, oboist Mary Lynch and pianist Clemens Teufel—both of whom have
Newport roots—and trombonist Achilles Liarmakopoulos, a member of the famed Canadian Brass.
The acclaimed Vienna Piano Trio will offer their introduction to Newport audiences in two concerts. Radio host Larry King will present two pre-concert talks. French violinist Diego Tosi makes
his Newport debut and Polish soprano Lucyna Jarząbek, winner of the Third Otto Edelmann Competition in Vienna, makes her North American debut.
Special events this season include the Festival’s “Rhapsody at Rosecliff ” on July 15th, with thanks to
co-chairs Ms. Virginia Gambale and Mrs. Suzanna Perez Laramee; and the Mark P. Malkovich, III
Memorial Fund endowment reception on July 23rd at The Breakers, part of the “From Broadway to
Hollywood Live” evening. We urge you to attend these two important events.
I join the Board of Directors in extending our sincere thanks to the Preservation Society of Newport
County for the use of the magnificent Newport Mansions these forty-eight seasons. This summer
The Breakers, Chateau-sur-Mer, The Elms, Rosecliff and Chinese Tea House will be home again to
beautiful music. Our appreciation also to the National Museum of American Illustration, Newport
Art Museum, Blithewold Mansion, Forty 1° North, Redwood Library, Saint Joseph’s Church, Saint
Matthew’s Church and St. Columba’s Chapel for their exquisite hospitality. These beautiful venues
make the Newport Music Festival truly a one-of-a-kind event.
You’ll meet new friends and welcome old ones. Together we’ll make the Newport
Music Festival an unforgettable experience!

Festival Highlights & Information
Rachmaninoff Series—Ten Concerts
In addition to his deservedly high reputation as a composer, Rachmaninoff also ranks among the supreme
piano virtuosos of all-time. When asked to define music in 1932, Rachmaninoff responded: “What is music!?
How can one define it? Music is a calm moonlit night, a rustling of summer foliage. Music is the distant peal of
bells at eventide! Music is born only in the heart and it appeals only to the heart; it is Love! The sister of Music
is Poesy, and its mother is Sorrow!” This season the Newport Music Festival will present ten concerts of his
piano works, chamber music, transcriptions and songs. It’s an intriguing series, bringing works that are among
the most popular in the classical repertoire to the concert stage. Look for the symbol.
Bogányi Grand Piano—July 9 and 14
For over a decade Hungarian pianist Gergely Bogányi has been coming to Newport, all the while never telling
any of us the invention he had been quietly working on for years. An invention that will almost certainly
change the future of classical music. Only two years ago did we learn what it would be. This year the Newport
Music Festival is proud to present the North American debut of the innovative Bogányi Grand Piano in two
recitals, July 9th at The Breakers and July 14th at The Elms.
Box Lunch Concerts at Chateau-sur-Mer—July 9
Box lunch concerts are a favorite with Festival audiences. This season, the Festival offers two opportunities at
Chateau-sur-Mer on Saturday, July 9th. Morning concerts are at 11 a.m. followed by a box lunch around 1 p.m.
Afternoon concerts follow at 2 p.m. with lunch preceding at 1 p.m. Why not come for both concerts and relax
with your lunch entr’acte on the expansive Porch at Chateau-sur-Mer? Tickets are priced from $46 to $48 per
person. Ask the box office for the different lunch selections.
Concerts at Blithewold Mansion, Gardens & Arboretum in Bristol, RI—July 18 & 19
The Festival tradition continues at beautiful Blithewold Mansion in Bristol, Rhode Island. Two Festival concerts
for our East Bay friends range from a program of music by Mozart and a morning of Chopin with box lunch.
“The Kitchen at Blithewold” is pleased to offer Festival patrons a choice of two box lunches for the 19A2 Chopin
at Blithewold performance. Choice 1: Chicken salad with mayonnaise, celery and dried cranberries. Choice
2: Roasted vegetable sandwich with caramelized onion jam, goat cheese and garden greens on focaccia. Both
sandwiches are served with potato salad tossed in a spring greens and almond pesto, pickle, fudge brownie and
freshly brewed iced tea or filtered water. The Festival comes to you!
Diego Tosi at Forty 1° North—July 19
This season marks the Festival debut of French violinist Diego Tosi. On July 19th, Mr. Tosi performs an electric
violin set of modern music by composers Steve Reich, Bernard Parmeggiani, Jesper Nordin, Pierre Boulez and
his own composition. Relax at Forty 1° North, an exclusive setting overlooking Newport Harbor. Doors open
at 9 p.m., come early for cocktails. Mr. Tosi’s electric violin concert begins at 10 p.m. This special late evening
concert is being sponsored by our friends at Forty 1° North. Be the first to see the Festival go electric!
Sunset Concerts at The Breakers—July 15 and 22 | Redwood Library—July 20
Specially-priced one-hour concerts beginning at 6 or 7 p.m. offer brevity and a wide variety of interesting
music and artists, including two of classical music’s most renowned piano works, performed by pianists Chad
R. Bowles and Grigorios Zamparas, and favorite Chopin works from legendary pianist Agustin Anievas. At
historic Redwood Library, Italian cellist Luigi Piovano and pianist Bernadene Blaha demonstrate their love of
Brahms’ cello sonatas. Special Festival thanks to The Preservation Society and staff of The Breakers for their
splendid cooperation.

Mark P. Malkovich, III Memorial Fund Endowment—Saturday, July 23
A beloved figure in Newport for over 35 years, Dr. Malkovich led the Newport Music Festival from
1975 until his passing in 2010. In his honor, an endowment fund was established at the Rhode
Island Foundation to ensure the future of the Festival’s mission. Richard Glazier’s dazzling concert
“From Broadway to Hollywood” begins at 7:15 p.m. with a reception on The Terrace of The Breakers, followed by a stellar performance of fabulous movie music with backstage stories about the
films and stars. Come dressed in your finest, tickets are $110 per person to benefit the Malkovich
Memorial Fund endowment. Book your reservation early for this special event.
Pre-Concert Talks—July 11 and 20
Join classical music radio announcer/host Larry King for two pre-concert talks on Rachmaninoff
and Mozart. Come early for both morning concerts at The Elms, talks begin at 10:30 a.m. You might
learn a thing or two as Mr. King shares his passion for classical music.

Pianist Richard Glazier is a leading authority on the music of George
Gershwin and the star of three award-winning PBS television specials
about American Popular Song. As a boy, he had an epiphany when
he saw the film Girl Crazy with a score by George and Ira Gershwin.
He was so excited by the music he heard, he wrote a fan letter to
famed lyricist Ira Gershwin. After meeting the legend at his Beverly
Hills home at age 12, Mr. Glazier dedicated himself to the Gershwin
repertoire and the American Popular Songbook, eventually becoming
one of the genre’s leading authorities.
Richard Glazier
This special concert for Newport audiences debuts new arrangements
of Gershwin songs, featuring brilliant vocalists Michael Andrew and
Michelle Knight. Mr. Glazier will offer fascinating, behind-the-scenes
stories and dazzling piano performances. The first half includes such
gems as I Got Rhythm, S’Wonderful, Rialto Ripple, Swanee, The Man
I Love, Stairway to Paradise, I’ve Got A Crush On You and But Not
For Me. The second half includes a medley of some of the Gershwin
brothers’ best love songs, An American in Paris in miniature, Summertime, Love is Here To Stay, The Man That Got Away, Embraceable
You and much more. Don’t miss this once-in-a-lifetime concert.

storyteller Richard Glazier in a concert dedicated to fabulous movie
music. The program includes songs from the earliest movie musicals
(“The Jazz Singer” and “Roberta”) to the theme from “Auntie Mame,”
Cole Porter’s “So In Love” from “Kiss Me Kate” and a medley of songs
from 1964’s Academy Award® for Best Picture “My Fair Lady.” Mr.
Glazier also demonstrates how music plays an important part in setting the mood of a film by performing two very eerie and atmospheric themes from Alfred Hitchcock’s “Vertigo.” In between songs Mr.
