The Future of the Region
It was a very special day for families at Children’s Hospital, as New
Era Cap CEO, Chris Koch and President Pete Augustine announced
a $2 million gift to create the New Era Pavilion at the John R. Oishei
Children’s Hospital when it opens in 2016.
today, to think about having a New Era Pavilion that is going to have
this kind of energy and this kind of gathering place where professional
athletes can come together and provide such an uplifting positive
experience is just incredible.”
The New Era Pavilion will be a prominent area in the main lobby on
the first floor of the hospital. The 2,500 square foot space will include
café seating with an entry lounge and a performance area that will
feature public activities and entertainment, holiday parties, visits by
professional athletes and others for patients, their families, visitors
and staff. These events will be coordinated by the hospital’s Child
Life Department, Stone’s Buddies program and other community
collaborations. Strong momentum continues in this $42 million fundraising campaign
for the John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital, which has raised more than
$35 million to date. Pete Augustine, president of New Era, co-chairs
this campaign with Amy Habib Rittling, partner, Lippes Mathias Wexler
Friedman LLP. According to New Era Cap CEO, Christopher Koch, “supporting the new
John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital is vital to the future of the region. I am
thrilled our organization can be a part of the hospital’s vision with the
New Era Pavilion.”
During the unveiling, Kaleida CEO, Jim Kaskie stated, “the team at New Era
truly exemplifies the ideal of compassionate givers in our society. And
Pete tells us, “I was born and raised in Western New York and feel
a deep responsibility to give back to our community. I take great
pride in strengthening our community, preserving its heritage and
am looking forward to a great future – a future that starts with one
of the cornerstones of this area – Women & Children’s Hospital of
Buffalo. When I was approached to co-chair the Campaign, I was
deeply humbled. The hospital is a key component to the future of the
region and has been ingrained in the local community for more than
a century.”

The Campaign for Children’s Hospital
Just over two years ago, The Board of Directors of The Women & Children’s Hospital of
Buffalo Foundation began the process of meeting with approximately 100 community
leaders and close Hospital friends to determine if it was feasible to raise the dollars
necessary to build a new Children’s Hospital here in Western New York. The initial
response was tremendous and we embarked on a campaign to raise $42 million to build
The John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital. The campaign kicked off in June 2012 and, by
the end of the calendar year, more than $25 million in long-term commitments had
been secured including named gifts from The John R. Oishei Foundation, The Alfiero
Family Foundation and The Children’s Guild Foundation. The year ended with two
critical leadership commitments from Campaign Co-Chairs – Pete Augustine with the
Koch family at New Era Cap and Amy Habib Rittling with the Habib family.
As we begin 2014, just over a year into the Campaign, we continue to receive outstanding
support from local and global foundations, businesses and families that we have relied
on for so many years, many for generations. At the half-way point of the campaign, we
find ourselves ahead of target at $35.5 million and recognize those who have made gifts
to help us build a new Children’s Hospital.
I want to personally thank Pete and Amy for their outstanding leadership on this
Campaign and look forward to more exciting news as we move into what I am sure will
be another successful year ahead.

Chairman, The Women & Children’s Hospital of Buffalo Foundation
A remarkable 2013 – There was much to celebrate for the Habib Rittling Family shown here
during the annual Festival of Trees Gala – from left Mark Rittling, Amy Habib Rittling, Amy
Habib and Anthony Habib. The family announced a $1.5 million commitment to establish
The Habib & Habib-Rittling Families Neonatal Intensive Care Endowment Fund - the first of
its kind in the history of Children’s Hospital of Buffalo – created and managed in partnership
with the Habib family and NICU leadership. From the simplest of needs like replacing rocking
chairs to funding education programs or providing daily nourishment and supplies families
might need after unexpectedly finding themselves in the unit, this fund will serve to meet
the unique and essential needs of patients, families and the NICU team.
Speaking on behalf of her family, Amy Habib Rittling tells us, “having found ourselves
requiring the expert care and reassurance of the NICU at Women & Children’s Hospital, we
understand that each patient and family has different needs. It is our hope that this gift will
make it possible for every family to have what they need at a time when they need it most. It
is our privilege to take care of those who have taken care of us when we needed them most.”

Leadership of the HighPointe on Michigan
Women’s Board traveled to Verona, New
York to attend the New York State Health
Facilities Association/New York State Center
for Assisted Living (NYSHFA/NYSCAL) annual
convention. The Board was honored as New
York State Volunteer Group of the Year and
recognized for their outstanding service to
HighPointe on Michigan.
The Women’s Board is a not-for-profit
volunteer-based organization that originated
in 1930. The volunteers fully support the
gift shop at HighPointe through an average
of 7,787 annual volunteer hours. Their
efforts also support the residents’ needs
in part through their annual support as
Presenting Sponsor of the Tee Off for Tots
Golf Tournament.
Deacon Norm and Nancy Foster, volunteers
at HighPointe on Michigan received the
2013 Spiritual Guidance Volunteer of the
Year Award. The Fosters have volunteered
at HighPointe for five years, spending more
than 300 hours in the past year alone
arranging interfaith ministry services and
visiting with residents.
“Deacon Norm and Nancy Foster as well as
the Women's Board members’ commitment
and dedication to our residents are greatly
appreciated,” said Michael Murphy, director
of long term care at HighPointe. "Their volunteerism is truly exemplary and deserving of
these prestigious awards from NYSHFA."
Leaders of the volunteer support group, TWIG (Together with Individual
Goals), Deanne King and Peg Jarnot present their annual gift of $55,000
to Children’s Hospital Foundation Board member, Amy Habib Rittling.
A portion of their donation will help purchase a ventilator to be used
as part of an intricate transport system for the region’s most critically
ill newborns and in coordination with one of the most advanced
transport isolettes, also made possible in part by a $50,000 gift from
TWIGs in 2012.
As the Regional Perinatal Center for Western New York, hospitals from
the eight counties of Western New York and beyond transfer their
most critically ill infants and high risk expectant mothers to Women
& Children’s Hospital of Buffalo for the highest level of medical care
available. The neonatal transport team provides emergent ground
or air transport of critically ill newborns in need of immediate
care. This highly skilled and specialized team consists of neonatal
nurse practitioners, registered respiratory therapists and neonatal
physicians, when necessary.
The Mother Baby Unit and Child Life were also recipients of funding
to continue their important work. TWIG organized in Buffalo in 1978.

Spirit of the Season
Three Generations of Giving
Paige Gottstine (right) with grandmother, Pat Daroshefski and Mom,
Amy Gottstine
Four years ago, Paige was very sick in the
PICU at Children's. She was admitted a couple
of days before Christmas and we were there
through Christmas as well.
On Christmas day, we were visited by Santa
and many helpers that brought her wrapped
presents and something for me as well.
As you can imagine, after being there for
four days, I was overwhelmed and humbled by
the generosity of the community. Although
Paige does not remember, the story is retold
many times and especially during this time of
year. Since then and every year we want to give
back. We collect toys and wrapping paper to give
to the hospital. It is important to teach my
children to give back. Unfortunately, I would
love to give my time, but at this point in my
life I am not able to so this is what I can do.
Thank you all for providing families with what
they truly need, peace of mind.
Happy Holidays!
Amy Gottstine
