“Every day 24,000 people die from hunger,
Every day more than 100 million children
are denied the chance to go to school,
Every day 1.1 billion people have to drink
polluted water,
Every day 8,200 people die due to HIV/AIDS…”1
When there is so much poverty and need for basic
humanitarian aid why is it necessary to talk about the arts?
When the concern is about ‘development with a human face’,
what happens to those creative individuals in communities who
need to sustain their and their loved ones’ lives? When the
discussion is about ‘human capital’, what happens to those
artists and artisans in developing societies?
The arts is without a doubt a very powerful communication,
education and therapy tool, but the key emphasis with this
project, TreasurePostcards, is on the economic value that it
creates for humanity.
According to an ‘American for the Arts’ study that was released
in year 2002 America’s nonprofit arts industry generates $ 134
billion in economic activity every year. Overall the non-profit
arts industry provides 4.85 million full-time jobs and close to
$90 billion in household income. The report of the study is
based on non-profit organizations and excludes major arts
cities and for-profit initiatives such as those in New York, Los
Angeles, and Chicago2. UNESCO Institute of Statistics states
that cultural goods surpass defense, cars, agriculture, and
aerospace in the US export market. The creative industries in
the UK generate revenues of around £ 112.5 billion, over 5% of
its GDP3. So why investing in the development of the cultural
sector is not seen as a valid development opportunity?
Micro-credit schemes for cultural projects generate selfsufficiency; income earned from arts creation and crafts
production contributes to health, housing, sanitation,
education; sustainability programs. The TreasurePostcards
project aims to address the role of arts in the economic
development field and highlight the significance of
protecting humankind's major cultural heritage sites and
artistic creations.
3
TreasurePostcards was initially launched as an arts contest in
September 2006 to invite individuals, amateur and professional artists
from across the globe to share their visual voices on arts added value
in poverty reduction, empowerment, and cultural preservation. The
contest ended on October 25, 2006. In 52 days close to 100 artwork
images of 46 artists were received from 26 countries; Argentina,
Belgium, Brazil, Cambodia, Croatia, France, Nigeria, Haiti, Israel, Mali,
Netherlands, Peru, Spain, Uganda, USA, Venezuela and more. The
average age of TreasurePostcards participating artist is 43; youngest
being 26 and oldest 80 years old. The gender ratio in project
participation is fairly equal.
This catalogue showcases the visual expressions of these artists; some
of the submitted artworks have been created specifically for this
project while others are postcard-sized images of previously formed
artworks that reflect the artists’ interpretation of the subject matter.
The artworks are all in different media, styles and colors; some artists
have focused on using traditional methods, such as ‘thread paintings’
from India and ‘miniatures’ from Turkey to emphasize the importance
of maintaining historical treasures; whereas others utilized 21st
century technologies in their artistic creations to depict their
understanding of the TreasurePostcards topic and related concerns.
Quite a number of digital and abstract artworks with vibrant colors
have been submitted.
Poverty has many faces and the artworks in this catalogue reveal
artists’ unique and personal approach in the project with a focus on
issues such as artistic individuality, cultural preservation, identity,
education, gender, HIV/AIDS, water/nature, or peace…
TreasurePostcards project has been created and coordinated by Arts
for Global Development, Inc. on a voluntary basis. The accompanying
educational event and exhibit (to highlight the correlation of arts and
culture in economic development) and the selection process for the
winner of the arts contest has been organized in collaboration with the
Crafts Center at CHF International.
We are excited to share with you that Abigail Doan with her artwork
titled ‘What Remains’ has become the winner of this international arts
contest. We hope that you will find the images shared in this
publication thought provoking and inspiring, and that you’ll join us in
our efforts to make a positive difference in preserving cultural heritage
and alleviating poverty worldwide! For further details on this project,

artwork What Remains
mixed media (recycled tourist postcard, x-acto knife, thread, seed beads)
statement
artist Abigail Doan
New York, USA
“I purchased this postcard while visiting Salinas
National Monument while on an artist residency near
Mountainair, New Mexico this past September. It is
of Gran Quivira "ruins", a Spanish mission and
pueblo settlement dating from the 17th century. I
was immediately struck by the apparent fusion of
these two cultures and the struggles that must have
ensued in the creation of this once-thriving trade
community.
“My work is a threaded dialogue between vanishing
tactile processes and emerging technological
means. As a geomorphic agent and environmental
thinker, I create recombinant maps, collages,
floating topographies, and in-situ-souvenirs that
highlight the delicate nature of our environs and the
degradation of spirit that results from our repeated
abuse of natural resources and shared terrain. By
festooning and inserting leave-no-trace materials
into a landscape, I hope to reinforce the inevitable
processes of decay and destruction with galvanized
seeds and visual cues that hover as poetic hosts for
ecological, cultural, and narrative propagation.”
What Remains is an examination of loss and future
archaeology. What might have been lost in the
arrival of the Spaniards, and what ultimately
remained once they abandoned their hopes and
dreams for this settlement?
http://abigaildoan.neoimages.ne
By cutting away portions of the postcard I wanted to
highlight the challenges involved in creating true
cultural cohesion and lasting treasures for native
peoples. What insight we would have into this
process if no archaeological or historical remains
remained at all? How would we stitch together the
remains of a site like this without our knowledge of
how things have already played out? How can we
create value without possessing such treasures?”

TreasurePostcards Arts Contest.

statement
artist Agnieszka Balut
Brazil
“The ‘Art in the Carioca Slum’ photograph is taken
inside Complexo da Maré (Complex of the Tide).
The Tide is not a slum, but a compound of slums; a
group of several communities living together almost
like an informal city with about 150.000 thousand
inhabitants.
Born in Poland
“Agnieszka Balut is a journalist, photographer and
painter. Between 1984 and 1989 she studied art in
Poland and Germany (took private painting,
ceramics, sculpture and conservation lessons).
After she acquired her Master’s Degree in Biology,
in 1996 she started Television and Press Journalist
studies at American-German Center of Practical
Journalism in Warsaw and received her diploma in
1998. In 2002 she completed her postgraduate
degree in Television Journalism at University
Estácio de Sá in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.
The young man in the photo shows his painting. He
painted the slum where he lives and he wrote inside
his picture the word ‘peace’.
The second photograph ‘In the old railroad’ is taken
in the Cachoeiras de Macacu, near Rio de Janeiro.
The old railroad in the photo has not worked more
than 50 years. The people who are descendants of
the old railroad workers are now taking the houses
the workers' of the railroad.”
She has been involved with different art activities
including ceramics, painting (mural and oil) and
gilding in Poland and Germany. In 1998 she moved
to Brazil and started her social work at the slums of
Rio De Janeiro while working with different
newspapers, independent TV productions, a book
about cultural diversities in Brazil, as well as
painting and doing her photographic work.”

“As the name implies, the radiance is a bright
reflection visioning peace, hope, security and human
rights. Each of the flashing arrows represent one arm
of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), to help
us tackle unemployment and the poverty pandemic in
our socio-economic and political drives within our
communities. The human being is the first natural
GEM nature as ever created and endowed him with
unlimited wisdom, talent and skills to enable him
develop and be highly productive.
Born in 1980, Sierra Leone
“During my academic years I participated and won
several arts contests such as the UNFPA Annual
Poster Contest, The Tan-Gains Festival, and Salone
Design and Toys Competition earning the first
position in the Design category and second in the
Toys Competition with Gold and Silver medals in
1995-1996.
I am the winner of various competitions including
the Special Court for Sierra Leone Arts Competition
Theme: ‘How Can the Special Court Help Bring
Peace and Justice to Sierra Leone’, the ‘Truth and
Reconciliation Commission’ and ‘National Vision for
Sierra Leone’. I have also coordinated the Special
Court Arts Program training children about their
perception of justice and Special Court’s work with
arts.
The main motif of my work is the ‘CALABASH’ and the
‘DIAMOND’ which is trying to portray our
interconnectedness and our interdependence on each
other, irrespective of nationality, religion, cultural
indifferences, colour or race - we are all the same.
Despite the cracks shown on the Calabash, and some
other unavoidable challenges which could limit or
slow development processes, it is recognised that
young people have the energy, ideas to make positive
change as it is seen on the Calabash. The stitches and
its overlapping manner shows our cooperation
courage and care for the future generation ... THE

“Global Treasures I and Global Treasures II /
The world is OUR heritage which is best shared
through travel. Cultural tourism presents different
cultural identities as well as diversities. Education on
different cultures which should be respected stresses
the 'unity in diversity'. No matter which side of the
globe we are at, up (Global Treasures I) or down
(Global Treasures II), we all share equally valued
global cultural treasures.
Born in Vancouver, Canada
“Daniela Angelina Jelinčić graduated in Ethnology
and Italian language from the University of
Zagreb, Croatia where she also completed her
Ph.D. studies in Ethnology.
Her interests are focused on cultural tourism.
Except scientific and practical application of this
subject, she is also intrigued by experiencing
artistic expression (watercolors, oils, pastels,
ceramics, wire).
Enriching Detours / Visiting the same places
deprives us of new knowledge. Art and culture
combined with creativity and tourism take us to new
dimensions of knowing other places, people,
cultures, ... Many art forms, either traditional or
contemporary as well as cultural identities are kept
alive as to be presented to 'outsiders' - tourists.
Creative jobs which are provided by this type of
tourism are an excellent reason why one should be
an artist!”
She works as a researcher with the Department of
Culture and Communications of the Institute for
International Relations in Zagreb and occasionally
teaches cultural tourism subjects at faculties in
Zagreb and Zadar. She also works as an expert on

through a number of stages: Only later, at the age
of 45, discovered the magic of photography:
changed profession and joined the photographic
laboratory of the Faculty of Architecture (Technion

Ben-Arieh works mainly with the method of
photomontage. His photographs are composed of a
number of negatives, which were taken at various
locations and times, and were assembled by him
into final prints in the darkroom. In the artist's
pictures frequently appear motives which seem to
connect with imaginary scenery. The result is the
creation of a different reality which emerges from
the unconscious and is related to the world of
myths and archetypes. The National Library in Paris
has acquired twelve photographs of the artist’s

Struggle for Water
A women depicting muggulu in front
of her residence
artwork titles given under the images
Thread Painting (Materials used: Eco- friendly, non-toxic, wood free, recyclable hand made paper & various
color silk threads)
statement
artist Mathi Durga
“Muggulu is a prehistoric cultural treasure of Hindu communities. It is an
extraordinary cultural tradition of INDIAN household rituals. Every day
early morning every Hindu Indian woman cleans in and out of her residence and made the land wet with water and depicts beautiful designs
with white color – called as MUGGULU in local language, TELUGU (MUGGU
is singular and MUGGULU is the plural) and ‘ Rangoli’ or ‘KOLI’ in national
language HINDI. In festival seasons, women decorate MUGGULU with
multi colors, flowers and other decorative items availability of the region.
It is a daily ritual all over India from major cities to small hamlets.
Interestingly it is compulsory according to Hindu traditions. Hindus
strongly believe that if the entrance of a house or residence is not
decorated with MUGGULU, the goddess ‘LAKSHMI’ (Power of wealth or
money) will not enter into that house.
In this artwork you can see the attire of Indian women ‘SARI’ and
decorative plait with flowers, gold ornaments on her head, bangles on her
hands, anklets to legs, nail polish to toe nails, BINDI on forehead…every
thing stitched on paper by hand.
‘Mother and child’ is a universal subject and here an Indian mother is
depicted. The red color on the face of the mother reflects that she is a
married woman. It is called as ‘BINDI’, an auspicious symbol of married
status in HINDU culture. It will be removed when her husband dies.
It is a modern and innovative expression of the artist and totally reflecting
Indian mother’s emotional bondage with her child. As an art piece, it is
very creative and wonderful.
‘Struggle for Water’ depicts the importance of water. The future of the
mankind depends upon the availability of water. WATER will be the major
issue for future wars among countries. Third world countries like INDIA
has been suffering from polluted water and also scarcity of drinking water.
It is a daily and a social problem to Indian rural women. Particularly some
states like RAJASTHAN where THAR DESERT is located; drinking water is a
daily struggle. In this artwork, 3 women are carrying pots that symbolize
rural women carrying water from faraway places.
“ I don’t know the issue of Water scarcity whether it is India’s problem or
world problem, but it is a problem of poor rural women worldwide.”

THREAD PAINTING is a centuries old art form
originated in CHINA, traveled to INDIA with

With an iron plate on my head, I'll go my own way. If
you like it, or not. If you expose it above the sofa or
put it in the garbage can. I do it, if you like it or not.
Because this decade demands to make choices, you
need to stand strong, and you must have an own

upper conviction, beyond the rules of the
Contemporary Art. Beyond techniques or knowledge,
in the middle of the moment, without any obstruction.
Just the undemocratic way. Be welcome in the
divergent consciousness, with small tunnel vision.
Why Realism ?
Just because I stand with both feet on the ground.
You have to do it all by yourself.. Really nobody is
waiting for you. Until you're famous or well known.
This will bring people who want your money, who
stalk you, and want all of you. You can't do any more

Peaceful Monhegan

statement
artist Susan Roux
Maine, USA
“Peaceful Monhegan is of the arrival dock on
Monhegan Island 10 miles off the coast of Maine. It is
known as the artist island because many artists have
flocked there for years capturing it’s unusual light and
the untouched simplicity. Time seems to have stood
still on this tiny island.
“I am a fulltime artist living in rural Maine.
Since my birth and childhood in the White Mountains
of New Hampshire, I have been intrigued and
interested in nature. After studying at Rhode Island
School of Design, I became very interested in
capturing this emotional grip nature has always had
on me. I chose to express and share with others my
feelings of unity, warmth, freedom and belonging
through my depictions of nature.
The Red Door is one of the tiny houses near the
arrival dock, also on Monhegan Island. It is
characteristic of the simplicity and weathered gray
siding typical of the structures found here. The
gray-pitched roof against a warm glowing fog
captures both the islands simplicity and feeling.
I am represented by The Blue Heron Gallery in
Wellfleet, MA on Cape Cod and The Wright Gallery in
Cape Porpoise, ME.”
Golden Marshes is my interpretation of the many
marshes in Southern Maine. It shows a grand
expanse of undeveloped land and it is essential for a
healthy ecosystem. It represents a marriage between
land and sea. The golden arms embracing and
inviting the ocean to a peaceful haven, much like we
all want to be accepted and embraced into our own
peaceful haven. Two completely different entities
existing in unison, both retaining their own
characteristics, reflects the hopes and dreams of
many.”

“Have you ever seen people who are unable to get
job opportunities because they are illiterate? Have
you seen poverty biting people because they have
cannot read and write? Have you seen young girls
who drop out of school because of early pregnancy
and cannot go back to continue their studies because
the culture demands that they should never go back
to school? Are you aware that illiteracy, poverty,
unemployment and poor health reinforce each and
exacerbate the degree of people’s misery ad
suffering? Have you seen a situation where poverty
blocks children’s chances of attending even free
universal primary education because their parents
cannot afford uniforms, books and food for their
children, thereby worsening illiteracy levels among all
age groups in the population? Are you aware that
literacy is a fundamental human right that should be
enjoyed by all, and yet a significant percentage of the
population in rural areas are not enjoying this right?

African Scholar to win it in the last 25 years. He is a
peer reviewer in a number of journals.”
My photograph is concerned about the above
questions. People in my village in Arua district of
North Western Uganda experience a similar situation.
The wars of the late 1970s and early 1980s which
brought the exit of Idi Amin as a president of Uganda
caused a lot of destruction in terms of people’s lives
and property and brought
misery, suffering and
poverty. I decided that a solution to these questions
should be to design and implement an integrated
intergenerational literacy project. The persons of
various ages appearing in the above photo are
intergenerational literacy learners of Onezu literacy
class in Arua district and I took the photo on 26th July
2003.”
