Jim Scott is the architect of the
rebuilding of the Aurora University
football program. Hired by AU in 1985,
Scott was given the task of re-starting
the football program, which the school had dropped in
1952.
Dipping largely into the pool of local and regional talent,
Scott has built an unparalleled success story. He had five
consecutive winning seasons (after finishing 1-4 in 1986
and 4-5 in 1987) between 1988 and 1992, and again in 1996
(5-4). In 1988 and 1989, he produced records of 7-2 and
8-1, respectively. However, his greatest legacy, thus far,
came in the 1992 season when the Spartans were a perfect
9-0 during the regular season and received their first-ever
NCAA football playoff bid. By virtue of its playoff berth, AU
also had the honor of being the first Chicagoland team to
ever participate in the NCAA Division III football playoffs.
Scott’s overall record in his 17 seasons at the Aurora
University helm is 91-60-3.
Success is certainly no stranger to Scott, who was a
prominent high school coach for 20 seasons prior to
joining AU. His tenure in the prep ranks produced a
121-58-4 mark in stints at Sterling and Marseilles high
schools. His tutelage at Sterling produced seven
conference championships and six playoff appearances for
the Golden Warriors. For his efforts, Scott was elected to
the Illinois High School Football Coaches Association Hall
of Fame in 1987.
Scott is a 1961 graduate of Luther (IA) College, where he
was a four-year letterwinner in football for the Norse. He
holds a BA in math, with a minor in physical education. He
earned his MA in guidance and counseling from Illinois
State University in 1967. He and his wife, Lorraine, reside
in Aurora.

Spartans Roundup
“Spartans Seek to Recapture Title”
The 2003 Aurora University Spartans football team is out
to recapture what they feel is theirs – the Illini-Badger
Football Conference crown and a berth into the NCAA
Division III championships. Head Coach Jim Scott (91-60-3)
enters his 18th season at the helm of the Spartan attack.
Since 1998, Scott’s Spartans are 32-3 in the Illini-Badger
conference and have been the conference champions three
of the first five years of the conference’s existence.
Leading the way for the Spartans will be an experienced
offense, led by a trio of offensive linemen, junior captain
Ben Adolph (Milledgeville HS), senior captain Joe Coronado
(West Aurora HS), and junior Nick Turvey (Plainfield HS).
The three will anchor the offensive line along with senior
Aaron Bohn (Rockton Hononegah HS), junior Brian Kaltsos
(Plainfield HS), and several talented newcomers who look to
open holes for a talented core of running backs that
includes returning 1,000 yard rusher senior Geary Pryor
(Willow Run HS) (176 att, 1.095 yards, 15 TD) and senior
Grant Shields (Plainfield HS) (39 att, 225 yards, 1 TD).
“Offensive line looks to be a strength on our team. Between
the returners with experience and our newcomers we
should be nine to ten deep at a key position,” Coach Scott
stated.
Junior quarterback Kyle Daniels (Prairie Central HS) (79140, 1264 yards, 11 TD) returns to lead as the signal caller for
the Spartan attack. Challenging Daniels will be sophomore
Joe Folliard (McHenry HS) and freshman Andrew Hornung
(Palm Bay HS) Folliard may also see time this year as a wide
receiver. “Folliard is a talent and guys like him find a place
to play. But the quarterback competition will be a good one
with three very talented individuals vying for the position.
We have also added several new skilled speed type guys at
4
AU Football
the wide receiver position and will lead to a balanced
offensive attack,” Scott said. Heading up the wide receiver
position will be Folliard, depending on the quarterback
battle, and sophomore Troy Blaser (Aledo HS) (4 rec, 96
yards). Returning tight end sophomore Nate Fincham
(Ridgeview HS) (3 rec, 50 yards, 2 TD) will continue to be a
go-to guy in the red zone as well as a key cog in the Spartan
ground attack.
The defense will have a different look to it this season,
returning just two starters, senior captain defensive
lineman Steve Messina (Plainfield HS) (54 tackles, 10 for
loss, 2-1/2 sacks) and junior captain defensive back Ryan
Schrader (Kaneland HS) (47 tackles, 1 int). Scott said the
defense, “We will be very inexperienced on the defensive
side of the ball. The players competing for positions are
good athletes, just unproven. Being so inexperienced at
cornerback is a bit of a concern though.”
The special teams in 2003 will be a promising area for the
Spartans. Senior Ryan Glab (McHenry HS) (5-5 FG, 22-30
PAT) returns to handle the kickoffs and extra points. “Our
kicking game will be a plus for us; returning your kicker is
always a good thing,” Scott said. The three-year starter
looks to finish up a nice career as a Spartan. Sophomore
Eric Guthrie (Triopa HS) will handle the job as the Spartans
punter. Anchoring the punt and kickoff return game in the
2003 campaign will be sophomore Troy Blaser (punt returns
16 att, 95 yards – kick return 16 att, 306 yards), and senior
Grant Shields (kick return 7 att, 158 yards).
The 2003 Spartans look to recapture the title as IlliniBadger Conference Champions. With a core group of
talented returners and a very talented group of newcomers,
good things will come to Aurora University.

*Note: AU began football in 1900 and fielded teams on an inconsistent basis in the 1900’s and ‘teens.
Teams were fielded regularly from 1924 through 1952 (except for the war years). The sport was
dropped after the 1952 season and reinstated in 1986 after a 33-year hiatus.

Aurora University is a private, independent,
comprehensive institution with an enrollment of more than
4,000 students. AU is accredited by the North Central
Association of Colleges and Schools.
Aurora University traces its origins to the 1893 founding of
Mendota Seminary. In 1985, Aurora College changed its name
to Aurora University to reflect the growth of curricular offerings
at the graduate level. Today the university enrolls more than
4,000 students in the College of Arts, Sciences and Business;
College of Education; and George Williams College of Health
and Human Services. More than 40 undergraduate majors are
offered, and at the advanced level, the institution offers
master’s degrees in business, education, recreation
administration, and social work, as well as a doctoral degree in
education. Through its merger with George Williams College,
the university operates a second campus in Williams Bay,
Wisconsin.
Aurora University is located in west Aurora, within an
hour’s drive of Chicago and at the western end of the Illinois
Research and Development Corridor. It is accessible via
Interstate 88 at the Orchard Road exit.
The University also has a campus near Lake Geneva, WI.
Set on 241 acres, the Aurora University Lake Geneva campus is
a site for summer family church camps, a respite camp for
children with cancer and diabetes, and a place for student
gatherings, outdoor education activities, an experiential
leadership program, and year-round family programs. The
