NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS
COACHING STAFF
Head Coach,
Bill Belichick
Pro Career: Bill Belichick is in his 38th
season as an NFL coach and is the only
head coach in NFL history to win three
Super Bowl titles in a four-year span. He
has won more regular-season games
(123) and more games overall (136) during a 10-year stretch (2002-2011) than
any other head coach in NFL history over
any decade. Belichick leads all active
head coaches and is currently ranked 9th
on the NFL’s all-time list with 192 total victories. Hired by Chairman and CEO Robert
Kraft on January 27, 2000, Belichick is in
his 13th season as New England’s head
coach. Through 12 seasons, Belichick
has delivered three Super Bowl championships, five conference titles, nine division crowns and 16 playoff victories,
while posting an overall record of 155-59.
Belichick directed the Patriots to victories
in Super Bowls XXXVI (2001), XXXVIII
(2003) and XXXIX (2004), and in 2007 he
became the first NFL head coach to guide
his team to a 16-0 regular season. Only
one coach (Pittsburgh’s Chuck Noll, 4)
has won more Super Bowls than
Belichick, and his three Super Bowl titles
tie Washington’s Joe Gibbs and San
Francisco’s Bill Walsh for second place on
the NFL’s all-time list. Belichick has led the
Patriots to a winning record in each of the
last 11 seasons. The only other NFL
coach to have 10 consecutive winning
seasons with one team since the 1970
merger was Tom Landry, who led the
Dallas Cowboys to 16 consecutive winning seasons (1970-1985). In 2011,
Belichick guided the Patriots to a 13-3
record and his fifth AFC Conference
Championship. Belichick is the only head
coach in NFL history to win at least 13
regular-season games in five separate
seasons. Belichick’s Patriots teams own
the all-time NFL records for consecutive
victories, including the postseason (21
from 2003-04) and consecutive playoff
victories (10 from 2001-05). Belichick’s
17 postseason wins are tied with Joe
Gibbs for third all-time, behind Tom
Landry (20) and Don Shula (19). Over a
100-game span from 2003-08, he directed the Patriots to an 82-18 record – the
best record for any 100-game span in NFL
history. Belichick (.649) has the third
highest winning percentage among
coaches with at least 150 wins, trailing
only Hall of Famers George Halas (.682)
and Don Shula (.666). Belichick’s recent
accomplishments are the latest triumphs
in a career during which he has helped
produce five Super Bowl titles, eight conference championships and 16 division
titles since entering the NFL in 1975. He
won his first two Super Bowls as the
defensive coordinator for the New York
Giants in 1986 and 1990 before claiming
three Super Bowl championships with the
104
Patriots. George Seifert is the only other
man to have won multiple Super Bowls
both as a head coach and as an assistant
coach. Belichick launched his coaching
career in 1975 with the Baltimore Colts
and continued as an assistant coach with
Detroit (1976-77), Denver (1978) and the
New York Giants (1979-1990). Belichick
was named head coach of the Cleveland
Browns in 1991, becoming the youngest
head coach in the NFL at age 38. By
1994, Belichick brought the Browns back
to the playoffs, finishing 11-5 and
advancing to the second round of the
playoffs, while allowing a league-low 204
total points. In 1996, Belichick joined New
England and was a key contributor to the
Patriots first division title in 10 years en
route to the Patriots’ appearance in Super
Bowl XXXI. Belichick then spent three seasons with the New York Jets from 1997 to
1999, helping New York improve from a
1-15 season in 1996 to an appearance in
the AFC Championship Game in 1998.
Career record: 192-104.

end at Wesleyan 1971-74.
