alking into Monch Ferrer’s space feels like stepping
into a different world. Dark hues and rich details
set the mood for Monch’s masculine space. His
21-sq.m unit is peppered with fascinating and
vibrant finds that detail his interests: a collection of
cars stacked strategically on a black wall, abstract
paintings hung neatly on another, a Chuckie toy,
and a quote gleaming quietly to remind him to cherish
every moment. An operations manager for My Singapore
Food Street and running a personal party needs business
(magicians, face painting, clowns, anyone?), Ferrer’s
Avida home abides by his personality and tastes using
colors to speak to him, a mirror to open up the small space,
and focusing on the kitchen where he cooks up enticing
meals for himself and family and friends. The effect? A
comfortable shelter that invites one to truly relax and escape
with good company and great food.

F
or a young couple like August and Eira Alagan (both are 26 years old),
their home is like a platform for growth. It’s also an opportunity for the
two to let their personalities shine. August works as an I.T. specialist
for a company in Alabang while Eira, a former preschool teacher, does
freelance graphic design and substitute teaching on the side. “On
weekdays, we’re up by 5am. I prepare breakfast and his baon while he
gets ready for work. There’s not much to do yet since it’s just the two
of us, for now,” says Eira. “If I get home early enough, we go out to eat in one
of the restaurants in Solenad,” adds August. While their works take up much
of their time, the Alagan home is a bit more comfortable than their day jobs.
The space is balanced with clean lines and pops of color. One of the walls is
brushed in deep navy that serves as the backdrop for the clipboards pinned
with interesting details like travel mementos, illustrations, and photos from
memorable trips. Together, August and Eira have transformed (and are still
in the process of!) their first home into an inspiring home. The cute couple
are proof that a dream and good design don’t have to cost an arm and a leg.

The Style Cozy and travel-inspired. Since
this is our first home together, we didn’t
want to overwhelm ourselves with the
job of decorating a house. We just made
sure that we’ll always feel relaxed when
we’re at home.
Design Inspiration Definitely traveling. We
tried to incorporate ideas we got from
the different places we’ve stayed in
abroad. We set up our accent wall so we
can display the photos and tokens we’ve
acquired from our travels, and placed a
few trinkets around for more character.
Favorite Pieces We love the clipboards on
our accent wall. It’s easy to switch up
and add onto the displays. We can even
clip on our bills there, so we don’t forget
them. It’s very practical.

decorate our home.

Store. We go to Ikea when we’re
abroad.

Karen Miran talks about bridging the distance between her husband
and family and finding comfort in their cozy little home

T
here’s now a whole generation of
women who divide their time between
their family and career. Not in the case
of Karen Miran, 28, a doting mother
to bubbly Brianna, 8, and Liam, who’s
turning five this May. Formerly working
at a call center, Karen is fully focused on
attending to her children, especially since her
husband Eugene toils overseas to provide for
his growing family. It was a hard decision at the
beginning for this beautiful family but with the
advent of free communication technology and

apps, overcoming the huge gulf of distance and
timezone became much easier.
“Okay na siya ngayon since there’s the Internet
and we communicate via Skype and Viber but
dati it was a challenge because medyo mahal
[to communicate]. Dati we text lang and medyo
bihira. Lalo na rin when I was working. When he’s
awake, I’m busy with work dahil graveyard shift,”
she admits.
That said, Karen’s move to stay at home, care
for the kids, and hold the family together while
Eugene is flitting between Qatar and South Korea
is an admirable one. That has been how it’s like
for the family for a number of years. “He left after
Brianna turned one so that was 2008. ‘Yung mga
contracts niya [before] every year hanggang sa
nakalipat siya ng company, every six months na
lang [the duration]. He stays here for a month
every six months.”
In those times that Eugene is in the Philippines,
they make it a point to travel out of town whether
as a family or a couple. Last time, Karen and Eugene
reveled in the beauty of Coron, Palawan while
they took another trip with the kids to Baguio.
But when they’re not traveling, the Mirans happily
relish bonding time as well as reconnect with each
other and family and friends at their cozy 39 sq. m
condominium unit—all thanks to Karen’s mother.
“My mom bought her unit first [here in Avida
Towers San Lazaro] and she was the one who
encouraged us to get our own,” Karen shares.
Despite only having lived in their own unit for a
year, they have been in the community for some
time now and that played a factor in their decision
to purchase their own home. It wasn’t smooth
sailing though for the Mirans.
“Wala akong second thoughts to purchase a
home here, ‘yung husband ko ang medyo hesitant,”
Karen says. “I was ready to jump in but he was
still a bit [uncertain]… because of the payments.”
They knew all too well the risk due to the nature
of Eugene’s job. “Before sa company niya, there
were times na pag uuwi siya he’ll end his contract
by choice because he wants to look for another
company for higher pay. So, mababakante siya ng
two or three months and that’s his worry.” But then
Karen reassuringly states, “Ngayon okay naman.”
Actually, it’s more than okay. Karen and her
family’s home—or “sinehan” as her sister and
brother-in-law coined it—sticks to brown hues
and textures with comfort at the top of their
minds. Spacious enough for every member
of the family as well as friends, Karen’s large
earth-toned couch, inherited from her mother’s
unit, serves as the centerpiece of the living area
and the backdrop for interesting details such as
vibrant and petal-stitched throw pillows, potted
plants, scented candles, and stacks of books.
“I just wanted it to be comfortable. Nandyan
lahat ng kailangan ko. But right now, I need to
work on some things!” she says, laughing. In the
bedroom, which is accented by another window,
sits her favorite piece in the entire household:
her wildflower-print bedsheets. “I bought it at
the time na paalis ‘yung asawa ko, ’yung time
na medyo malungkot so I need something na
pampasaya. Malungkot kasi pag aalis na siya.”
Immersing herself in the bedsheets proves a
point that there is always a silver lining to being
part of this kind of family. The home they built for
their family, which they chose primarily for the
convenience it offers, nurtures a love that keeps
them together. That wherever Eugene may be,
Karen, Brianna, and Liam are all ready to welcome
him back in the place they call home.

Makeover Tips
For Your Bedroom
Foolproof tips to turn your bedroom into
the coziest space at home by barry viloria
T
he bedroom is that one place at home where you are at your most
comfortable—free from all the stress and worries that mostly haunt your
professional life. Often, though, we take it for granted and leave it cramped
and cluttered. Interior designer, set stylist, and furnishing expert Nini Falcon
comes up with these easy, back-to-basic tricks to make the most out of your
room of recluse.
Remember three things when
doing a bedroom makeover: color,
texture, and pattern. It can be “tricky,”
says Falcon, as “some overdo it.” The
solution: just pick one under each. To
give off a sense of cool and cozy for your
bed, Falcon suggests blues and greens
(color), satin and tweed (textures), and
floral or simple prints (patterns).

If you want to go trendy when
it comes to your bed, Falcon
recommends patterns like Hampton
links, Alston stripes, or broad stripes,
all of which are designs that are not too
busy to the eyes.

For your entertainment, get a
cushioned armchair where you can
watch TV or read a book. Falcon says
a Lazy Boy can be a good investment
albeit bulky. “An armchair is different
from a bed, as they offer a resting area
for your arms and elbows,” says Falcon.
A big pillow can be an alternative to
an armchair if you want to just lay
around and relax. “But, obviously, not
too many of it, as they take too much
space,” warns Falcon.

If you have a couch or chair in the
room, you may adorn it with a
throw blanket. It’s an oversized scarf
that captures dust and dirt (from
fingers and other natural forces). “At
the same time, it adds color and texture
to your furniture,” says Falcon.

Transform your work area into a more
organized space without foregoing
your working discipline. “Some of us like
to work with only a few things on the
table. Some of us have to have stuff on the
table as part of our job,” says Falcon. “Just
make sure if you have things on the table,
they should be of immediate use. Add a
bulletin board to help keep your schedule.”

For a more ergonomic work area,
however, you might want to familiarize
yourself with the basics. “You don’t want to
squeeze your work life into your personal
life, but, if you have to, make sure your
work area doesn’t bring in the stress to
your supposed rest area,” says Falcon.
“Know the rules: The ideal height of the
table from the floor is 75 centimeters, while
that of the chair to the floor is 40 to 50.”
She adds that you should be on eye level
with your computer when you’re using
it. Better pick an adjustable chair for this.
These all minimize stress and strain.

For a cooler feel, choose equally cool
colors such as blue, green, and white. You
might want to add plants for a greener touch,
says Falcon. “Get some succulent plants and
hanging plants, which come in small pots.”
Another option would be a mini terrarium,
which is a transparent globe or container of
any shape in which plants are grown.

Make the natural lighting work to your
advantage, advises Falcon, so it’s best to
study it first. A room that faces the sunset,
for example, receives the hottest amount
of sunlight during the day. Likewise, if you
choose to have too much natural light in
your room, it might turn the room too hot
and, thus, exhaust the air-conditioning. It’s
best to have blackout drapes, adds Falcon,
or wooden blinds, shutters, or Roman blinds,
all of which are offered in neutral colors for a
more tranquil feel.

A makeover can also mean a change in your lifestyle, says Falcon. She suggests that, to make your
personal space more comfy and convenient, you should also be disciplined enough to check on both
your furniture and well-being from time to time. “Make sure you’re really there to rest, so discount things
that stress you out. For example, buy a chair and a lamp if you like to read and it relaxes you. At the same
time, don’t charge your phone near your bed, as it adds distraction when you’re supposed to be relaxing.”

You can scout thrift shops in Evangelista
SOLVED! and Kamuning, and look for an old table
with character that you can use as an extra
counter. If space is the issue, look for affordable large
trays that you can put over your sink or stove, or
folding carts that can easily be stored away.

I have an old-school gas range

kitchen. What can I do to make it
blend in better?

You can have the metal parts painted using
automotive lacquer, or you can decorate your
range with washi tape or wallpaper!
Most affordable backsplashes
PROBLEM: I find are cheaply made and
usually unattractive. What are
my other options that won’t break
the bank?
The most durable and budget-friendly option
would be to use small tiles put together. Some
12” x 12” tiles cost only P25-P30. Tiles are
easy to wash plus they look attractive depending on
the colors and patterns you like.

It’s safe to say that the

make sure it’s a space that perks
you up and brightens your mood for the day. If
you’re lucky enough to have windows in your

colored curtains—instead, opt for sheer, very
light shades or, better yet, use a frosted glass
sticker to let ample light into the room. This
is especially important if you do your makeup
in the bathroom, as natural light is best for
getting the most natural look. If your bathroom

sufficiently lit with an even overhead light.
TOWELS
The quality of
your towel can

on from cheap towels that shred with every use
and splurge on some truly quality plush towels
that won’t go threadbare in just a few washes.

Meet the hardworking creative minds
behind the TVC campaign as they bust
out of their own quarters to share their
thoughts on being part of this project

Where did you get your inspiration
for the TVC campaign?
The campaign was very personal for me because
it happened at a time when I had to move out
of a home that I had been living in for almost
20 years. It was difficult to be inspired when I
only had a few days left to find a new home. At
the time, I was also hospitalized due to dengue.
It was in the hospital that I came up with the
song. I reminisced about the good times I had
at the home I was about to leave—the warmth,
the love, the laughter, and the happy moments,
things that would forever be found at home. I
drew inspiration not from my home, but from the
memories I made there.
in the wardrobe and production design. We
even assigned a specific lens type and camera
movement for each character to give each
vignettes a totally different feel. As for the
acting, we were careful to give them specific
prompts and latitudes so their expressions of
inspiration, joy, happiness, and contentment
manifested differently from one another.
How did the message in the TVC
campaign resonate with you? Did you
relate with any of the characters?
How is this TVC material different
from other TVCs you’ve directed
before?
Each character was actually a representation
of the different stages of my life. Migs and his
friends: the fun, crazy times I spent as young
twentysomething out of college. The artist: my
present self, continuously painting the missing
pieces of my career that I had passionately built
slowly but surely. The couple: what I really aspire
for, the future I envision for myself.

What was your reaction when you
first saw the storyboard of the TVC?
It was a merry mix of excitement and
nervousness. These days, emotional narrative
spots have become quite a scarcity. And
suddenly, here we were, telling three different
tales with three different sets of characters
with three varying degrees of emotions. I
could tell that both agency and client put in a
lot of thought and effort into crafting such an
inspirational assortment of stories. Now it was
up to our team to tell these stories in the most
beautiful and effective way we possibly could.
What was the inspiration for the
treatment applied on the material?
The biggest challenge was how to make each
set of characters memorable and yet clearly
distinct from each other. We decided to assign
a specific color palette for each story, which
manifested through lighting and subtle cues

First, it’s been a while since I last did a
60-second TV commercial. I think all of us in the
industry agree that we don’t see much of those
any more. That in itself was already a refreshing
treat for me. But perhaps the biggest difference
here was being given the freedom to develop
and expound a variety of characters and their
stories as we see fit. Opportunities like these
remind us how TV commercials are still very
much like filmmaking indeed.
How was the experience like working
on this project?
This was truly a one-of-a-kind experience for
me. I feel like everyone—from the client to the
agency and the production team as well as the
post and audio houses—was eager to collaborate
while being mindful and respectful of each
other’s opinions. This openness inspired all of us
to bring something unique and beautiful to the
table. The result is something that we can all be
proud of for many years to come.

What was your first impression when
you read the lyrics and heard the song?
It’s definitely catchy, that’s what I first thought
of the song. But then I got a little bit nervous
recording it, thinking ‘Can I give this song
justice?’ Glad to be working with great people on
this song, it came out well.
While recording the song, what
memories of home came to mind?
Lutong bahay came to mind. Nothing beats homecooked meals! My mom cooks the btest tinola! What are the things that inspire you
as a songwriter/musician?
People around me. Anything that tickles my heart. Can you share how you were inspired
to pursue a career in music?
After listening to Ultraelectromagneticpop of
Eraserheads, I picked up a guitar and taught myself
to play their songs. That was the start of my
journey to becoming a singer/songwriter. Home is

What inspired the arrangement you
made for the song?
I drew inspiration from the brief and the copy,
and the whole idea of dreams being achieved
one by one and the fact that I totally agree that
home is home and nothing could and would ever
compare to the feeling of having your home and
being home. How do you relate to the song and the
campaign material?
After the brief was given, what was great for me
was actually how my life fit with the whole idea
of the campaign. And after reading the copy, I
almost naturally gravitated towards how I wrote
the song and recorded and sang it. It was as if I
was actually there, living the dream of achieving
a milestone in my life. I even told Francis
[Bagnes] that I really enjoyed doing this song and
that it was emotional for me. It was a very good
feeling overall!

MALOLOS
It’s a mix of the old and the new around this historic

Once the seat of power in the
country during the term of
Emilio Aguinaldo, Malolos is
brought into modern times with

Also known as the Minor Basilica of Our Lady

Aguinaldo moved his presidential office all the
way from Kawit, Cavite. Since its foundation in
1589, it has become an important landmark to
the locals especially during town festivals and
anniversaries in Philippine history. In front of the
Cathedral is the famous Kalayaan Tree where
Aguinaldo and some of his officials held important
meetings under its shade.

Kamistisushan District
When Emilio Aguinaldo moved his presidential
office to the Malolos Cathedral convent, the
neighboring houses served as executive offices
for his cabinet. Most of these houses still stand
today either as residential or commercial
properties. It became popularly known as
the Kamistisushan District due to the former
residents’ rich mestizo backgrounds. Notable
houses include the Bautista-Uytangcoy Mansion,
Adriano-Vasquez Mansion, and The Lino and
Maria Reyes Mansion.
This special celebration is also named after the
town signature “Bamboo Art” which is heavily
practiced in Malolos and across Bulacan province.

Center
This modern landmark in Malolos is the official
venue for grand social gatherings and activities
around the province, particularly events during
the Singakaban Festival or when a visiting guest
speaker or entertainer comes to town.

Located at the Paseo del Congreso, Barasoain
Church made its mark in history as the venue of
the First Filipino Congress and the Inauguration

BROCCOLI SAUCE
Serves 4
Ingredients
1/4 cup olive oil, divided
1 large onion, chopped
3 cloves garlic, minced
1/4 kilo broccoli, florets
salt and pepper, to taste
1 cup chicken stock
1/4 cup heavy cream
1 teaspoon dried sage
1 teaspoon fresh or dried thyme
1/4 kilo chicken or turkey sausages,
sliced
225 grams penne pasta, cooked
according to package directions
garlic parsley bread
Parmesan cheese
Directions
PASTA PERFECT

MIXED SEAFOOD PASTA
Serves 4
Ingredients
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 onion, chopped
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 teaspoon paprika
1 400g can chopped tomatoes
1/4 cup white wine
1 zucchini, cut into strips
1/4 kilo seafood mix (shrimp, squid rings, mussels)
salt and pepper, to taste
parsley leaves, chopped
lemon wedges, to serve
Directions
1. In a pan, heat the oil and sauté onions and
garlic until fragrant. Add the paprika, tomatoes
and wine, then bring to a boil. Lower heat and
simmer for about 10 minutes.
2. Stir in zucchini and mixed seafood, stirring
occasionally. Cook for 3 minutes. Season with
salt and pepper.
3. Sprinkle with parsley and serve with lemon
wedges.

1. In a pot, heat 2 tablespoons of the
olive oil and sauté onion and garlic.
Add broccoli florets in the pan and
season with salt and pepper. Pour in
chicken stock and bring to a boil until
it softens.
2. Transfer onto a blender or food
processor. Add in cream, sage, and
thyme. Process until consistency
becomes smooth.
3. In a large pan, heat remaining olive
oil and cook the sausages until evenly
brown. Add cooked pasta.
4. Pour in broccoli mixture into the
pan and simmer for a minute.
5. Transfer onto serving plate and
sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.
Serve with garlic parsley bread.
