Match press kit
Juventus Stadium, Turin
Match background
The matchday two fixture between Juventus and Galatasaray AŞ is something of a rarity: they have not met in Europe
for ten years but now both seek a first Group B victory.
• While Juve opened their group stage campaign with a 1-1 draw at FC København, Galatasaray were overwhelmed
6-1 by Real Madrid CF in Istanbul – their joint heaviest home defeat in UEFA competition – and parted company with
coach Fatih Terim on 24 September.
Previous meetings
• The sides have faced each other in two UEFA Champions League group stages, most recently in 2003/04 when
Alessandro Del Piero scored twice (5, 73) in Turin to give Juventus a 2-1 win after Hakan Şükür (19) had equalised.
• The teams at the Stadio Delle Alpi on 17 September 2003 were:
Juventus: Buffon, Thuram, Ferrara, Montero, Zambrotta, Camoranesi (Tudor 65), Tacchinardi (Davids 45),
Appiah, Nedvěd, Del Piero, Trezeguet (Di Vaio 78).
Galatasaray: Mondragón, Bülent Korkmaz, F De Boer, César Prates, Hakan Ünsal (Tamaş 84), Mertol
Karatay, Hasan Şaş (Cihan Haspolatlı 66), Sabri Sarıoğlu, Ergün Penbe, Hakan Şükür, Fábio Pinto (Arif Erdem 80).
• In the Istanbul return, Hakan Şükür scored both goals in a 2-0 Galatasaray victory.
• The sides also met in the 1998/99 group stage with both games ending in draws, 2-2 in Italy 1-1 in Turkey.
• Juventus have played only one other Turkish opponent, winning home and away against Fenerbahçe SK in the
1996/97 group stage. Defending champions, Juve advanced to another final but lost 3-1 to Borussia Dortmund in
Munich.
• Galatasaray have not won in ten previous visits to Italy, drawing four and losing six. That September 2003 trip to
Turin was their most recent outing; the prior fixture was a 1-1 draw at AS Roma in the second group stage in March
2002.
Match background
• Making their return to the competition last season after a three-year absence, Juventus reached the quarter-finals
where they went down 2-0 home and away to FC Bayern München.
• The defeat spoiled Juve's record of six wins and five draws in 11 home European fixtures since Bayern won a
matchday six encounter in December 2009.
• In the group stage the Bianconeri drew 1-1 with FC Shakhtar Donetsk in their first European game at the new
Juventus Stadium. They followed up with home wins over FC Nordsjælland 4-0 and Chelsea FC 3-0 before a 2-0
second-leg success against Celtic FC completed a 5-0 aggregate win in the last 16.
• Galatasaray also reached last season's quarter-finals for the first time since 2001, losing 5-3 on aggregate to Real
Madrid who had also knocked them out at the same stage 12 years earlier. A 3-0 loss at the Santiago Bernabéu put
them on the back foot in 2012/13, with a measure of compensation gained in a 3-2 home victory.
• After losing away to Manchester United FC on matchday one they posted successive victories at CFR 1907 Cluj, SC
Braga and FC Schalke 04, and have lost just three of their last 19 European away fixtures, winning ten.
Team ties
• Juve coach Antonio Conte scored with an acrobatic overhead kick as Italy defeated Turkey 2-1 in Arnhem in the
UEFA EURO 2000 group stage on 11 June 2000. Galatasaray assistant coach Ümit Davala played for Turkey.
• Roberto Mancini was confirmed as Terim's replacement as Galatasaray coach on 30 September. The 48-year-old
played for Bologna FC, UC Sampdoria and SS Lazio in his homeland and has had spells in charge of ACF
Fiorentina – where he replaced Terim in 2001 – Lazio (2002-2004) and FC Internazionale Milano (2004-2008) before
taking charge of Manchester City FC from 2009 to 2013.
• Mancini oversaw two 1-1 draws against Juventus with City in the 2010/11 UEFA Europa League group stage. As a
coach his overall record against Juve is W5 D8 L5; in Turin it is W3 D2 L2. He guided Lazio to victory against the
Bianconeri in the 2004 Coppa Italia final, winning 2-0 in Rome before a 2-2 away draw, and also knocked Juve out of
the same competition in the 2007/08 quarter-finals with a 3-2 away win after a 2-2 home draw.
• Mancini's last cap for Italy came in a 2-1 friendly defeat against Germany on 23 March 1994; Conte had been called
up to the squad for the second time but did not play.
• Felipe Melo played for Juventus between 2009 and 2011, scoring four goals in 58 Serie A games. The previous
season he made 29 appearances for Fiorentina, scoring twice.
• Didier Drogba scored in both games as Chelsea FC eliminated Juventus in the 2008/09 round of 16 with a 3-2

aggregate win, winning 1-0 at home before a 2-2 away draw.
• Wesley Sneijder played for FC Internazionale Milano from 2009 to 2012, making 76 league appearances and scoring
13 goals. He was part of the side that won the 2009/10 treble of UEFA Champions League, Serie A and Coppa Italia.
• Sneijder scored past Gianluigi Buffon in the Netherlands' 3-0 win over Italy in a UEFA EURO 2008 group fixture in
Berne on 9 June 2008. Andrea Barzagli and Pirlo were also in the Italy team.
• Fernando Muslera played for SS Lazio between 2007 and 2011, making 96 league appearances.
• Muslera and Martín Cáceres are team-mates with Uruguay.
• Stephan Lichsteiner was a team-mate of Muslera at Lazio between 2008 and 2011 and played alongside Aurélien
Chedjou at LOSC Lille in 2007/08.
• Albert Riera and Fernando Llorente have played together for Spain.
• Drogba scored the opening goal in Ivory Coast's 1-1 draw against an Italy team including Barzagli and Pirlo in a
Geneva friendly on 16 November 2005.

• Juventus had 13 shots on goal in their first game, the joint highest total along with FC Bayern München and Real
Madrid CF. They also had 12 shots wide, three more than any other team.
• The Italian club won 16 corners on matchday one, seven more than the next highest total.

• Out: Luca Marrone (US Sassuolo Calcio), Alessandro Matri (AC Milan), Emanuele Giaccherini (Sunderland AFC),
Nicolas Anelka (released).
General information
• On Sunday, without the rested Andrea Pirlo, Juve won 1-0 at Turin rivals Torino FC with Paul Pogba getting the only
goal. It also ended a run of five games without a clean sheet. Tévez was replaced in the 90th minute after damaging
his right ankle.
• Llorente marked his first start for Juventus with the winning goal in a 2-1 home victory against Hellas Verona FC on
22 September. Tévez, who registered in his first three competitive appearances for the club, had equalised five
minutes earlier.
• Three days later Antonio Conte's side came from behind to defeat hosts AC Chievo Verona by the same scoreline.
• Juventus have scored in all 19 Serie A encounters since a 1-0 loss to AS Roma on 16 February.
• Gianluigi Buffon joined Fabio Cannavaro as the most-capped player in Italy's history with 136 appearances on 10
September as a 2-1 win against the Czech Republic at Juventus Stadium booked a place at the 2014 FIFA World Cup
with two games to spare in Group B.
• Martín Cáceres damaged the meniscus in his right knee in Uruguay's 2-1 win against Peru, undergoing surgery, and
has been out of action ever since.
Galatasaray

General information
• Galatasaray parted company with Fatih Terim on 24 September after the coach turned down a two-year contract
extension. Assistant coach Hasan Şaş oversaw a 1-1 draw with Çaykur Rizespor on Saturday after Selçuk İnan was
dismissed (74).
• On Monday, Galatasaray confirmed the appointment of Roberto Mancini, who has signed a three-year contract, as
Terim's permanent replacement. The Italian also replaced Terim as ACF Fiorentina coach in 2001.
• The Turkish champions were leading Süper Lig pacesetters Beşiktaş JK 2-1 in added time at the Ataturk Olympic
Stadium on 22 September when the Istanbul derby was abandoned because of crowd problems.
• Cimbom's haul of six points from their first four games was their worst start to a campaign since 1989/90.
• Burak Yılmaz became the first player to register in four successive matches for Turkey when he struck against
Romania in a FIFA World Cup qualifying win on 10 September.

Head coach
Juventus: Antonio Conte
Date of birth: 31 July 1969
Nationality: Italian
Playing career: US Lecce, Juventus
Coaching career: AC Siena (assistant), USD Arezzo, AS Bari, Atalanta BC, AC Siena, Juventus
• A combative and versatile midfielder, Conte also weighed in with his share of goals – usually spectacular.
• Made Serie A debut with hometown club Lecce aged 16 in 1985/86 but was not a regular until 1988/89 when his side
returned to the top flight after two seasons away. Joined Juventus in November 1991.
• Spent the next 13 seasons at Juve, later describing the famous black-and-white shirt as his "second skin". Won five
Scudettos, the UEFA Champions League in 1995/96 and the UEFA Cup in 1992/93 in addition to triumphs in the
UEFA Super Cup, Italian Cup and a European/South American Cup, wearing the captain's armband from 1996.
Capped 20 times by Italy, he was part of the squads that finished runners-up at the 1994 FIFA World Cup and UEFA
EURO 2000.
• Started coaching career as assistant at Siena in 2005, taking over Serie B side Arezzo the following season. After
leading Bari and Siena to the top flight in 2009 and 2011 respectively, he signed a two-year contract with Juventus.
• Wasted no time in revamping the squad and enjoyed a debut season to remember as the Bianconeri claimed the
Scudetto without losing a single game, suffering their sole defeat of the season against SSC Napoli in the Coppa Italia
final. After signing a new contract until 2015, he duly guided Juventus to a second successive title in 2013.
Galatasaray AŞ: Roberto Mancini
Date of birth: 27 November 1964
Nationality: Italian
Playing career: Bologna FC, UC Sampdoria, S.S. Lazio, Leicester City FC
Coaching career: ACF Fiorentina, S.S. Lazio, FC Internazionale Milano, Manchester City FC, Galatasaray AŞ
• Spent the majority of his playing career in Italy, winning Serie A titles and UEFA Cup Winners' Cups with both
Sampdoria and Lazio as well as six editions of the Coppa Italia, four with Sampdoria and two with Lazio. Capped 36
times by Italy, the forward was a bronze medallist at the 1990 FIFA World Cup.
• Started his coaching career as assistant to Sven-Göran Eriksson at Lazio before replacing Fatih Terim at Fiorentina
in 2001. After leading the Viola to the Coppa Italia, he returned to Lazio and repeated that feat as well as steering the
Roman club into the UEFA Champions League and to the UEFA Cup semi-finals in 2002/03.
• Became coach of Inter in July 2004, replacing Alberto Zaccheroni one day after terminating his contract with Lazio;
led the Nerazzurri to Coppa Italia glory in his debut season, Inter's first domestic honour since the 1989 Scudetto.
After Juventus were stripped of their 2005/06 title and AC Milan suffered a points penalty, Inter were finally crowned
champions of Italy again. Mancini repeated that success in 2006/07.
• Left Inter in May 2008 despite winning another title and replaced Mark Hughes as manager of Manchester City
midway through the 2009/10 Premier League season. City finished fifth in his first campaign, third in his second –
when they also lifted the FA Cup – and dramatically won the top flight for the first time in 44 years on the final day of
his third.
• City finished second the following season, but Mancini was sacked two days after losing to Wigan Athletic FC in the
2013 FA Cup final. Mancini replaced Terim again that September, signing a three-year deal with Galatasaray.

Competition facts
UEFA Champions League: Did you know?
• Last season Chelsea FC became the first defending champions to fail to get through a group stage since the UEFA
Champions League began. (This record, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/2000 and 2002/03 that
featured a second group stage). In 1992/93, FC Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holders
and lost 4-3 on aggregate in the second round to PFC CSKA Moskva.
• No team has successfully defended the UEFA Champions League trophy with AC Milan (1989, 1990) the last club to
win consecutive European Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), AFC Ajax (1995, 1996), Juventus (1996, 1997) and Manchester
United FC (2008, 2009) have all returned to the UEFA Champions League final as holders only to lose.
• S.S. Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta is the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League having
featured against Real Madrid CF on matchday six in 2007/08 aged 43 years and 252 days. Alessandro Costacurta is
the oldest outfield player; the Milan defender was 40 years and 211 days when he played against AEK Athens FC in
2006/07.
• Ryan Giggs is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 37 years and 289 days, in Manchester United's 1-1
draw at SL Benfica on 14 September 2011.
• Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared; he was 16 years and 87 days when he started for RSC
Anderlecht against FC Steaua Bucureşti on 23 November 1994. He was sent off in the 37th minute.
• Peter Ofori-Quaye is the youngest player to have scored in the UEFA Champions League, aged 17 years and 195
days. He found the net in Olympiacos FC's 5-1 defeat at Rosenborg BK on 1 October 1997.
• Lionel Messi became the first player to score five goals in a match in Barcelona's 7-1 win against Bayer 04
Leverkusen on 7 March 2012. Eight players, including Messi, have scored four times in a game, most recently Mario
Gomez for FC Bayern München on matchday eight in 2011/12.
• Barcelona have finished as group winners on 14 occasions, one more than Manchester United.
• Barcelona hold the record for successive wins in the UEFA Champions League proper with nine, between 18
September 2002 and 18 February 2003. RSC Anderlecht's 12 straight defeats (10 December 2003 to 23 November
2005) is also a competition record.
• Five teams have recorded six successive victories in a UEFA Champions League group stage: Milan (1992/93),
Paris Saint-Germain FC (1994/95), FC Spartak Moskva (1995/96), Barcelona (2002/03, first group stage) and Real
Madrid (2011/12).
• Fifteen teams have gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without picking up a single point, most
recently Villarreal CF, FC Oţelul Galaţi and GNK Dinamo Zagreb in 2011/12.
• Barcelona scored 20 goals in the 2011/12 group stage, equalling Manchester United's competition record from
1998/99. Barcelona scored 19 times in the 1999/2000 first group stage, a tally matched by Real Madrid last season.
• Only RC Deportivo La Coruña (2004/05) and Maccabi Haifa FC (2009/10) have failed to score in a group stage.
• Dinamo Zagreb conceded 22 goals in the 2011/12 group stage, a new record that was equalled by FC Nordsjælland
last season. The previous highest total was 19, shared by MŠK Žilina (2010/11), Debreceni VSC (2009/10), FC
Dynamo Kyiv (2007/08) and Ferencvárosi TC (1995/96).
• No team has ever gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without conceding a goal. Milan (1992/93),
Ajax (1995/96), Juventus (1996/97 and 2004/05), Chelsea (2005/06), Liverpool FC (2005/06), Villarreal (2005/06) and
Manchester United (2010/11) all let in just one.
• Before their 3-1 win against Sporting Clube de Portugal on matchday six of the 2006/07 campaign, Spartak Moskva
went 22 games without a victory in the competition.
• The lowest total for a team qualifying from the group stage is seven points. The first to do it since three points for a
win was introduced in 1995/96 were Legia Warszawa that same season before Dynamo Kyiv managed it in
1999/2000 and Liverpool in 2001/02. FC Lokomotiv Moskva and eventual finalists Juventus both progressed with
seven points in 2002/03, as did Rangers FC and SV Werder Bremen in 2005/06.
• Only two teams have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Borussia Dortmund (1997, final in
Munich) and Juventus (1996, final in Rome), while Manchester United lost the 2011 final in London and 12 months
later Bayern were beaten in the showpiece in their own stadium, the Fußball Arena München.
