FECAL FACE DOT COM || DAILIES 9/18/05 9:57 PM << back :: Fashionably Dysfunctional :: Dress: Clothing as Art Richmond Arts Center September 6 - October 30 -by John Casey Part performance art and part fashion show, the Dress: Clothing as Art show at the Richmond Arts Center brought out a large and enthusiastic crowd during its opening Thursday evening. Most of the clothing (and in some cases, crazy costume-like props) was created and fashioned to the extreme, a welcome change to the message of fashion conformity disguised as individuality that we are constantly bombarded with daily through advertising. The artists/designers in the Dress show have at least one thing in common: All of them appear to take great joy in crafting their work, and most are quite humorous. http://www.fecalface.com/blogs/the_eastsider/ Page 1 of 27 FECAL FACE DOT COM || DAILIES 9/18/05 9:57 PM Lisa Kokin makes clothing for small dogs, primarily for her chihuahuas Chico and Cha Cha. These costumes are very playful and, in some cases, elaborate, and the furry models seemed more than pleased to pose. There's obviously a whole culture of pet owners who can't help but dress their critters in clothes. I say, if you are going to do it, and the pets are down with it, proceed with abandon. Lisa Kokin Collaborator Lia Roozendaal built the "dog house" that showcased the costumes, and she shot the video being displayed, which features the frolicking pups. http://www.fecalface.com/blogs/the_eastsider/ Page 2 of 27 FECAL FACE DOT COM || DAILIES 9/18/05 9:57 PM Lisa Kokin, Lia Roozendaal and friends Robin Lasser and Adrienne Pao constructed the "Picnic Dress Tent" which encased Lasser in a vinyl '50s-style dress. A hilarious commentary about the traditional role of women at that time period, the dress literally tethers the wearer to her home—in this case a tent made from typical red-and-white-checked tablecloth material. Like a good '50s housewife, Lasser dutifully served Scotch and sodas for guests. http://www.fecalface.com/blogs/the_eastsider/ Page 3 of 27 FECAL FACE DOT COM || DAILIES 9/18/05 9:57 PM Robin Lasser dutifully serving Scotch and soda Upon entering the tent, one could observe Lasser's lovely bloomers conveying the underlying repressed sexual tension of the era. http://www.fecalface.com/blogs/the_eastsider/ Page 4 of 27 FECAL FACE DOT COM || DAILIES 9/18/05 9:57 PM Nice bloomers! In the center of the room was a crocheted sweater dress by Elizabeth Jameson. Simple in it's design, but totally impractical in it's application, the elongated arms of the dress flow down and outward like crazy red rivers. This piece created a nice visual anchor for the exhibition. Elizabeth Jameson Designer j.D. is really more of an installation artist and sculptor who describes his wearable, cardboard contraptions as "An aggressive extension of the body." I would definitely consider eight-foot mandibles "aggressive extensions." His pieces were the hit of evening, with folks putting them on and walking about the joint, sparking many a conversation. http://www.fecalface.com/blogs/the_eastsider/ Page 5 of 27 FECAL FACE DOT COM || DAILIES 9/18/05 9:57 PM j.D.'s aggressive cardboard contraptions... Mary sports some j.D originals With Halloween around the corner, Lucrecia Troncoso's stuffed and sewn scarecrows seemed seasonally appropriate. In the true spirit of collaboration, Troncoso took donated clothing and busily manufactured friends. She assembled quite a body count by evening's end. http://www.fecalface.com/blogs/the_eastsider/ Page 6 of 27 FECAL FACE DOT COM || DAILIES 9/18/05 9:57 PM Lucrecia Troncoso ... ... and friends http://www.fecalface.com/blogs/the_eastsider/ Page 7 of 27 FECAL FACE DOT COM || DAILIES 9/18/05 9:57 PM Continuing the Halloween theme, artist Jenny Zhang assembled a collection of costumes, her own octopus and three curated ones. My favorite was the flying squirrel by NDFBTK. j.D. dons the flying squirrel costume http://www.fecalface.com/blogs/the_eastsider/ Page 8 of 27 FECAL FACE DOT COM || DAILIES 9/18/05 9:57 PM Darshan Amrit Darshan Amrit, owner of Mixed Use—a boutique of modern furniture, vintage clothing, and art gallery— is a clothing mixologist. Performing live, using his custom surger, Amrit conducts reconstructive surgery on vintage wear. He has the presence of a deejay, taking donations from observers like song requests and transforming them into very personalized one-of-a-kind pieces. Here there is a collaboration between artist and model, as Amrit carefully considers both the reclaimed material and its history, as well as its wearer. Sat - Sep 17, 2005 | Comments (0) :: Home Is Where the Art Is :: "There's No Place Like Home" Installations by Alex Munn and Kirk Stoller at 33 Grand, Oakland -by John Casey Alex Munn's virtual world 33 Grand is host, this month, to two different constructed realities of “home.” Grand gallerist Alex Munn and fellow artist Kirk Stoller have divided the gallery space into two sections; the front room contains the building site-like installation of Stoller, and the back area features the virtual reality dreamworld of Munn. http://www.fecalface.com/blogs/the_eastsider/ Page 10 of 27 FECAL FACE DOT COM || DAILIES 9/18/05 9:57 PM Kirk Stoller's stairs Kirk Stoller's installation is part archeological dig and part new-home construction. An impractically thin but sturdy set of newly framed stairs ascends to the attic crawl space above the front door; there lie such artifacts as discarded doors, foam padding, old painted boards, and a folding chair that one would normally find in any attic or basement. On one wall are carefully assembled layers of six-inch by approximately four-foot strips of drywall and wood creating a ten-foot-high strata that one might find if excavating a landfill of building debris. http://www.fecalface.com/blogs/the_eastsider/ Page 11 of 27 FECAL FACE DOT COM || DAILIES 9/18/05 9:57 PM One of the window areas is piled high with tiny figures, some made from roughly cut plywood and some from stuffed and sewn fabric. The silhouette for these figures comes from a photo of the artist as a child. It's as if one is seeing, in physical form, the nooks and crannies of childhood memories of home. The rest of the space contains walls of two-by-four framing conveying that "work-in-progress" feel. The soft-sweet smell of fresh-cut pine fills the gallery. Kirk Stoller's cut-outs fill the gallery's front window When you enter the darkened area of the gallery you enter Alex Munn's "home." Munn's childhood memory of home is at first playful and exploratory but then becomes bittersweet as one travels through his virtual past. http://www.fecalface.com/blogs/the_eastsider/ Page 12 of 27 FECAL FACE DOT COM || DAILIES 9/18/05 9:57 PM Munn's hand-built console The first thing one notices in the room, is the nicely handcrafted gaming console. It may be a generational thing but as a person who's frequented enough arcades in my lifetime, I'm immediately drawn toward any sort of console or pinball machine. Munn, a 3-D environmental designer, has mapped out, in painstaking detail, his actual childhood home using a first-person Unreal Tournament engine. http://www.fecalface.com/blogs/the_eastsider/ Page 13 of 27 FECAL FACE DOT COM || DAILIES 9/18/05 9:57 PM The console's computer screen is simultaneously projected onto the opposite wall so non-players can observe the action. The traveler's viewpoint is low to the ground, like that of a child. Maneuvering from room to room via trackball and joystick, the "player" travels through the surreal, dreamlike interiors and exteriors, exploring familiar rooms such as the kitchen and living room and unique rooms such as the pottery studio. I was initially a bit disappointed that the player does not wield weaponry. I was thinking "where's that mangy cat or nosey neighbor one could open up on?" I came to realize that this adventure was more subtle. Highly detailed in its textures, the house includes clues like the birthday cake adorned with the number 7 that reveals the age of the dreamer. Further investigation leads to a sickroom which, as it turns out, was the room occupied by Munn's mother during her last days prior to an untimely death near Munn's 7th birthday. The vacant nighttime setting adds to the inherent sadness of the place. Both installations are unique testaments to childhood homes and the memories evoked within, yet they compliment each other well. -------------------http://www.fecalface.com/blogs/the_eastsider/ Page 14 of 27 FECAL FACE DOT COM || DAILIES 9/18/05 9:57 PM This post was first posted to SFist in a more concise form. Tue - Sep 13, 2005 | Comments (0) :: It's your anniversary...! :: Wooga, wooga! Woah! It has been a wild couple of weeks! That's both good and bad, mostly good though. I have had a lot of fun, learned a lot, laughed a lot, even cried a bit! The Fecalface anniversary was crazy! I got to meet a few artists I have been meaning to talk to. I got my drink on. I got to see many friends like Vincent Perea, Derek Weisberg, Bruk Dunbar, and John Casey. Old friends came out to support me and Fecalface, and it both touching and encouraging to see that so many people are feeling the fecal! The art was nice to look, though as the night when on there were so many damn people at 111 Minna that you couldn't see most of the art anymore! There was a palpable sense of excitement in the air. I could taste it. I could feel it on the wide open pores of my skin seeping in, infecting me. The soundtrack of the night was excellent, old soul cuts are always good. It was nice to hear the originals versions of songs that have been sampled over the years, especially the song that provided the basis for Mos Def's hit "Ms. Fat Booty." The following pictures will tell a story of my last couple of weeks, including the Fecalface anniversary. There will be...hah...that's be telling! I say just scroll, slowly. Let the pictures that you there or maybe even take you back there. Take em' in, drink up your bevearge of choice whether it is coffee, tea, beer or whatever poison your mouth deems worthy of imbibement... My favorite piece at the recently closed Ian Greeb show at Mama Buzz. As I have the day off work, and I feel pretty sorted - that picture is pretty much how I feel right now...! http://www.fecalface.com/blogs/the_eastsider/ Page 15 of 27 FECAL FACE DOT COM || DAILIES 9/18/05 9:57 PM Hey! It's my co - columnist John Casey, Shane Bliss, and Meagan Geer at Ego Park! This show was the same night as Ian Greeb and was covered back in The Eastsider by John Casey. Peep the column if you already haven't. I liked the show. Interesting work and good peeps, nothing but. Ryan, you never showed? What's up with that! C'mon now...! I know you have a temper, but some of us actually you. Okay, maybe some of us your music. Well...I haven't actaully met you and your reputation precedes you..! Too bad. The Paramount Theatre is a national landmark and one of the most beautiful art deco places, ever! The tour comes recommended from The Eastsider. It is interesting. It is a awesome place to see music. http://www.fecalface.com/blogs/the_eastsider/ Page 16 of 27 FECAL FACE DOT COM || DAILIES 9/18/05 9:57 PM My friend Jimmy had a cool BBQ a couple of weeks ago. Good eats. I ate with my hands and enjoyed some of the rad art on display at his place. This is one such piece. Jimmy is a climber, a good one. Too bad I don't have any picures. I do have a picture of my friends Nick, Brian and Mason drinking on his roof. Here is the singer of a band I like, BATTLESHIP. He's the one being kissed. I think this shot would have been better than the one the SF Bay Guardian used for their cover piece on them. http://www.fecalface.com/blogs/the_eastsider/ Page 17 of 27 FECAL FACE DOT COM || DAILIES 9/18/05 9:57 PM My buddy Brian is visiting from Texas. He is a filmaker and is currently working in a art gallery in SF. He travels a lot, a whole lot. He came from Texas via England and soon will be off to remote area of South America. I plan to visit him there. We will undertake a spirit quest and live with tribal people. His old lady is doing research on shamen and how the medical industry exploits them. Bastards. This picture captures his comic and engaged approach to reality well. You rock dude. B.A.R.T. surfing is fun! Public Transit...sigh...I wish it ran all night. http://www.fecalface.com/blogs/the_eastsider/ Page 18 of 27 FECAL FACE DOT COM || DAILIES 9/18/05 9:57 PM Go A's!!! Fuck yeah! No hating on the Giants, but the A's are a better team. Here's hoping they make the playoffs. How can you not like a team with two dollars tickets and the best season in baseball history? What is even cooler is they did that feat with one of the lowest payrolls in all of baseball. Take that Yankees! Looking good! Okay, maybe DJ Kitty is! Me, sadly, a lil' tipsy...! I ran into DJ Kitty of KALX and Oakland's Ruby Room at the Lobot anniversary art show. She is easily one of the nest DJs in the Bay Area. She is also opening a much anticipated new club in the East Bay soon! I will likely cover the opening and the space in the future. Watch this space. Music at the Lobot show. Umm...I liked the art better there. Good stuff. Great space. It's so large! It bleeds opportunity and potential! Now on to the fecal face 5 and a half photos... http://www.fecalface.com/blogs/the_eastsider/ Page 19 of 27 FECAL FACE DOT COM || DAILIES 9/18/05 9:57 PM Theo and Leila, owner/gallerist of Madrone Lounge in SF. We are studying our faces. What grade do you think we are giving each other? My friend Lilla and John Casey, co - columnist supreme! BIGFOOT! http://www.fecalface.com/blogs/the_eastsider/ Page 20 of 27 FECAL FACE DOT COM || DAILIES 9/18/05 9:57 PM Brian and I, consider all the art and all the people. Boy, it got crowded there! You definetely wanted to come earlier as to better view all the art. I did, and I was thankful. Personal faves included Alika Cooper, Sam Flores, and Vincent Perea that night. Speaking of Vincent, here he is! He is in the middle with his old lady Paula and Eric of Boontling Gallery. http://www.fecalface.com/blogs/the_eastsider/ Page 21 of 27 FECAL FACE DOT COM || DAILIES 9/18/05 9:57 PM John Casey, unknown friend of friend, and the lovely and talented Bruk Dunbar! Yikes! It appears I am channeling the late, great Hunter S. Thompson here. Maybe that's not a bad thing. Or...is it? It's me, Adam 5100, and Kelly Tunstall. This is a cute picture. I like. It was so cool to finally meet Alika Cooper, her art is great! It is of the moment and also a bit timeless. That is a rare quality. Here's is our fecal originator John Trippe and Alika Cooper herself,in the flesh! http://www.fecalface.com/blogs/the_eastsider/ Page 22 of 27 FECAL FACE DOT COM || DAILIES 9/18/05 9:57 PM The first show I covered for the fecal was at Boontling Gallery and here is co owner/co - gallerist Derek Weisberg! We plan world takeover together now. Expect crazzzzzy news from us one day. Either that or a really good party. I call this piece of found art "odd guy with strange sign!" Anyone know his story? My friends and I tried talking to him. He didn't make much sense. Was he corporate viral marketing perhaps? A weirdo? An artist? Who knows? He made me laugh. Okay, I lied, he made me smirk. http://www.fecalface.com/blogs/the_eastsider/ Page 23 of 27 FECAL FACE DOT COM || DAILIES 9/18/05 9:57 PM Isaac and Theo...dooooooooode, you're cool! I like your attitude Isaac. We gots mad skills at making funny faces! Here are my intials:T.K.A. Here are yours: B.K.A. Only one letter of separation. I still haven't found an apartment big enough for your painting I won all those years ago when I had not yet written for fecalface. It was three relationships, five lovers, two apartments ago. One day I will find a warehouse space, yesssssssss...then I will put up that painting I won off of the fecal oh, so long ago...! Afterwards on saturday, I went to see HIGHTOWER play a house party in my home town, Oakland. They rocked the house. There was moshing. No, pussy moshing or frat - boy shit, though. This was real tribal, punk - rock, old - school pogo/roughneck - type stuff! In other words - it was way rad! There was nice bonfire outside to keep you warm. There was a lot of my friends there. It was a nice place to be after a hard week filled with the drama of work and relationships. Afterwards I was a happy boy. What more can I ask for, right? When I got there people where passed out everywhere. That's a good sign of a good party! There was even a guy passed out on top of the keg! Folks were friendly and no fights were to be had. This poor guys lost his clothes. I heard a different story from three different people about why. Poor guy, I give him props for partying naked. This is him. http://www.fecalface.com/blogs/the_eastsider/ Page 24 of 27 FECAL FACE DOT COM || DAILIES 9/18/05 9:57 PM Naked guy, I salute you! http://www.fecalface.com/blogs/the_eastsider/ Page 25 of 27 FECAL FACE DOT COM || DAILIES 9/18/05 9:57 PM There was fire dancing to be seen. HIGHTOWER rocking out! It will be nice to see them again at the fecalface music party at SLIMS friday...! Sooo...I think I'll end with this picture. I love finding art on newspaper stalls! I mean nearly all newspapers sucks, and well...TV news is even worse. So...finding art on these things brightens your day. Have a great week, folks! See you at SLIMS!
