This week, a few verses later in the same chapter 6, the author describes the return of the disciples to “report all they had done and taught.” It must have been hard work for them, since Jesus invites them to “come away by yourselves . . . and rest awhile.” Even after the retreat to a deserted place, they discovered it wasn't deserted after all, for the crowd had “arrived at the place before them.” Living discipleship is intense, tiring work, not for the faint of heart or for those who want comfort. Even though followers of Jesus can expect strenuous effort in living Christian lives, God's presence is constant. Jesus advised His disciples to take time to rest and regroup after their work, but He went with them, probably as tired as they were. When He saw the crowd that had discovered their “deserted place,” His compassion took over and He “began to teach them many things.” He, and His disciples, rose above their own interests and extended their energies to instruct the people about the household of God. All of us can heed the warnings and advice of today's Scripture: work hard as a disciple; rest when necessary, but expect to be compassionate for those who need us. Most importantly, know that the presence of Jesus and the Spirit is constant and invigorating. A “Mass setting” includes the parts of the Mass that are sung: the Gloria, the Holy, the Acclamation, the Amen and the Lamb of God. The parish already has been using three other Mass settings: The Mass of Creation, the Mass of Christ the Savior and the Mass of Renewal. We periodically change these as we change liturgical seasons (Advent, Christmas, Lent and Ordinary Time). This new Mass setting has a gospel style accompaniment to it that is enjoyable to sing. Here is a link if you would like to listen: https://goo.gl/C2qoN3 (this link can be found on the parish webpage at ww.sclparish.org, where you can just click it and it will go directly to the site). The Holy was taught the first Sunday of July, the Acclamation and Amen will be taught the first Sunday of August, the Lamb of God will be taught the first Sunday of September. Please consider arriving 5 minutes earlier to learn these. Sing out in active participation! Active participation means that your mind and heart are awake, alert and engaged. 10 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time July 19, 2015 11 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time July 19, 2015 YOUNG ADULT SAND VOLLEYBALL St. Vincent de Paul’s young adult group of St. Pius V parish will be hosting a sand volleyball tournament on the courts at Hanley Park.
