AA A– 50 1 1965-2015 50th ANNIVERSARY EXHIBITION Photo: Karen Kjaergaard 2 3 ENGAGING THROUGH ACHITECTURE The Anniversary In October 1965 Aarhus School of Architecture in Denmark opened the doors for the first time. In the beginning the school was seen as an alternative place for architectural education, and its existence had a short-term horizon. 50 years later we are still here, and we take pride in the way the school has developed into being a recognised part of the international architectural environment. We appreciate our history and heritage and continue to insist on architecture that promotes great Scandinavian design. And we are proud to see that our modest-sized school, from a provincial city in a small country, has positively affected the progress of highly qualified design and architecture in the world. On the occasion of our 50th anniversary, we present an exhibition that involves significant architects who, over the past 50 years, have visited, lectured, worked or in other ways contributed to our development from an alternative school of architecture to an internationally renowned academic institution. We wish to thank all contributors and participants and look forward to celebrate our anniversary with YOU. Torben Nielsen Rector 5 C1 W1 E1 Udstillingsbygningen 1:100 21-09-2015 KK, ASN Thank you A white room, a giant red carpet and 50 white cubes - one for each year the Aarhus School of Architecture has existed. The Anniversary Exhibition presents a selection of films by prominent figures in architecture and design who have, over the years inspired and shared their visions with the school. The films discuss what it means to be an architect, to relate to human conceptions and challenges and to work artistically within a given art form. The exhibition raises issues such as how does architecture affect us, why do we need architecture and why are we celebrating the event? The answer is that architecture manages to connect society, not just when we physically feel its presence, but in particular when we, through the artistic aspect, are involved, affected and engaged. The Anniversary Exhibition is an exhibition in which the content only becomes visible once you engage, direct your gaze towards the cubes and listen to the contributions from architects and practices from around the world. The outside perspectives demonstrate the importance of engaging with the world outside, with international partners as well as locally-anchored pioneers who work together with the school on rethinking architecture and design with the aim of creating a better society. The films are shown in 50 white cubes; together they present a multi-faceted mosaic of a school which, from the very beginning, was open to all that was new and different insisting on an international perspective, professional insight and local belonging.
